How London's "ABANDONED SHOPPING DISTRICT" FAILED After Only 3 Years 😔😔 | HACKNEY WALK

  • In this video, I take a short walk through Hackney walk, one of East London's most promising projects origination of the area that was meant to bring lots of prospects to the local community. Instead, after only four years, the shopping district labelled as East London's answer to Bicester Village became a ghost town, with only one remaining stock left. Here is the story of how this came to be..

Seeing retail decay is sad, all those jobs lost and those connections made between retailer and customer, going to a store and buying clothes is always the best, I just wish we could reverse the decline, it would help rebuild broken communities, I fear like the pubs that retail stores are heading the way of the dodo, sadly.

And I’d bet 100% them units ain’t filled cos the owners wanna run it down so they can justify redeveloping it into more 1 bed apartments, in prime real estate.
A few back handlers here n there and boom, planning permission for 300 new builds so an MP can say he’s tackling the housing shortage. Every x amount of apartments they have to give one to the local authority so both sides win.

Sad sign of the times. Back when I started watching Hox back in 2015 or so me and the people I knew all had a bit of spare cash to get a decent statement piece each month. Now with the cost of living having gone up since the pandemic and the prices having gone silly on most brands I just can’t afford it at all anymore and I imagine a lot of people are the same. I’m quite fortunate I’ve had a 30% payrise since 2018 and have still been totally priced out of luxuries. It’s no surprise to me that areas like this are ending up as ghost towns as regular people now haven’t been worse off financially in a long time

Hackney council thought because theres Burberry around the corner this outlet would work, Carharrt left in 2012ish. Hackney just ain't the place for this kind of set-up, high grade expensive garms, its not a sustainable feature, where people are struggling, and business rents are crippling. You're right, that whole strip used to be mechanics arches, and before tesco was there it was a massive carpark with porta cabins stacked up, occupied by the Council, right opposite the globe pub.

It’s very sad to see. I’m from Manchester and you can relate the same issues with stores that are still opened here. Countless factors come into play but having worked in retail and as a shopper, the big one for me is product range.
It’s all very basic, standard stuff you can get in virtually any other store and online. The issue here is people who have no affiliation to the stores are calling the shots on which product goes where.
A new Nike store recently opened here and it’s very underwhelming. Not to mention the price points. Why pay full price for a standard Nike tech when it’s on sale at JD.
I think this is why the likes of JD and Size are booming due to their exclusive ranges and frequent end of season reductions.
