- Rishi Sunak is to resign as Conservative Party leader after a catastrophic election defeat to Labour.
The outgoing UK prime minister announced his resignation outside 10 Downing Street in London.
Sunak said he will not resign immediately - only when formal arrangements for a successor have taken place.
Labour won the UK general election in a landslide, with the Conservatives seeing their worst result - in terms of seats - in the party's history.

British Sign Language is meant to be very expressive. Facial expressions help a lot with interpretation and context for people who are completely Deaf.
It looks as if he’s mocking, but I think it’s better to think of it as putting a ‘!’, ‘?’ or quotation marks and other things we don’t have symbols for on his sentences and words.

He lost the election
Sunak was Prime Minster and leader of the Conservative Party. In the UK, the leader of the largest party in Parliament is the person that becomes Prime Minister. (The Prime Minister is the person in charge of the Government.)
The Conservatives lost the recent election, i.e. Labour is now the largest party in Parliament, so their leader (Kier Starmer) will take over as Prime Minister. Technically this works by Sunak resigning and the King asking Starmer to be Prime Minister, because technically the Government is employed by the King. However, Sunak had no constitutional way of staying on as Prime Minister and if he had tried to the King would have essentially fired him.
In the speech Sunak also announced that he would resign as leader of the Conservative Party, which he isn't technically forced to do but pretty much always happens when a party loses an election. If he did try to stay as leader of the Conservatives it's almost certain they would use the Party's internal rules to remove him and select a replacement.
@@CheCheDaWaff Minor correction - the King would not have removed him: it is instead a loss of a "vote of no confidence" that would have done so. The serving PM is chosen by Parliament and the interaction with the monarchy is largely just symbolic. The election near instantaneously changed the structure of Parliament very substantially.

Honestly this man was very overhated he did a lot while he was in office and honestly the ignorance of the country is what lead to his resignation. He was put into an extrememly difficult position at a very difficult time and he tried to make the best of it.
