Can A Taxa Mantis Handle Cold Weather?

  • We had planned for 2 months to spend this weekend camping on the beach in Port Aransas, Texas. Mother Nature had something different in mind when she sent in the coldest weather we've seen in Texas in a lifetime.
    So, at the last minute, we decided to go to the Lincoln National Forest. Then, at the last second, we decided to stay closer to home.
    All in all, this was a great test to see the capability of our Taxa Mantis in extremely cold weather.

    Hey there, I loved the video! I'm purchasing the new overland and will be living in it full time and would like some amenities. One of them is a TV. We'd like to mount it in the sleeping area if we could somehow, do you have any ideas or recommendations? I was hoping it was possible to mount it somewhere with some sort of swivel or something but I haven't found much and I'm unsure if it would be even possible to put a TV mount in the Mantis. Can you help me at all? I'm a first time buyer of any kind of camper, so I want to know as much as I can, because right now I'm a beginner!
    Thank you in advance!

    Are you and your family still using the Mantis? I live in Denton and I am looking at a Taxa Mantis Overland and your videos have really helped me narrow it down.

      @@TheMantisExperience Absolutely answered my question. My only other question is what type of batteries are you using at this time and did you use alternate power so the batteries wouldn't die at night?
      I don't understand why the US RV Industry hasn't started adding Inverters as an option, and at the very least 2 6 volt AGM batteries instead of the less efficient 12 volt ones.
      You might want to check into a "Jackery 1000" Generator instead (Lithium and 1000 watt inverter in one unit) Or something along that line.
      Thanks for all your info, has been very helpful really narrowing my search👍

      I've got 2 AGM group 31 batteries. But the heat runs off of propane. I'm not real technical on the inner workings, but I'm sure the truma system requires battery and propane to work.
      We do plan to add solar at some point, but not ready to take on the financial burden just yet.
      We've been just fine with the current setup so far.
      Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Have you ever camped in it with the top up during several days of rain? Another UA-cam user lives full time in their 2018 Mantis and it leaks like crazy when the top is up. That's the only thing keeping me from getting one.

    • @TheMantisExperience
      @TheMantisExperience  3 роки тому

      No, we have not. However, we have been in a torrential downpour once, and it was fine. I had a tiny leak a couple weeks ago, but I think I just need to just reattach the Velcro.

      Also, the design was greatly improved in the 2020 models. My cousin has an '18, and he agrees that the design and material on mine are way better.

      Hey Dawn, I thought I'd circle back with you on this as we just got done with a 10 day trip, and it rained nearly every single day for at least an hour, some days it rained as much as 4-6 hours. We had our top up the entire time and did not experience a single leak. Hope this helps you!

    If the lines and tanks have to be drained, it's NOT a 4-season camper. It ain't rocket science. There's more to the 4th season than keeping warm.

    • @TheMantisExperience
      @TheMantisExperience  3 роки тому +1

      That's valid, Jim. Honestly, I'm okay with that, however, I understand some might not be.
      If we can use it and be warm, that's enough for me.

    • @jimnelson7740
      @jimnelson7740 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheMantisExperience Me too. But, for some, the problem is leaving cold country, and getting to somewhere warmer before the tanks and lines freeze. I'm still waiting for someone to build a true 4-season "outdoorsman's" camper.

    • @TheMantisExperience
      @TheMantisExperience  3 роки тому

      I am guessing it hasn't really been done because the market doesn't justify the need. Is that your thought as well?

      @@TheMantisExperience Probably true. For me, a two-person rig is enough. I have an old Alaskan camper on a single-axle trailer. I've spent 100's of nights in that rig. The trailer is setup so the wheel track is identical to my 4 x4 tow rig. so it will go down any two track the truck will. It's a 10' camper, but a 12 or 14 would be better, that would leave room for a decent bathroom. Not fancy, but it's an "outdoorsmans" camper. I've got years of poutdoors experience, and am a good designer (have one patent). if you ever get serious about that type of camper, you should talk to me...:-)

    My wife and I are looking for a good overland ring for our twins and us. She really likes the Mantis for the bunks. My main concern is the wood, with rot, mold, mildew, etc. have you had issues with this. I like the design. Just wish they would make one with zero wood.

      Thanks Eric! We did have a slight issue. The seal between the panels had degraded a bit, and allowed water to get in. Put on some new sealer (which took 5 minutes) and we've had zero issues since.

    So you store your mantis indoors or outdoors when not in use? Have you have any leak issues? We like them but unsure for West Virginia weather. Still researching

      As I'm typing this, we are having a pretty healthy thunderstorm here in TX. It is outside. Never had a leak issue.
      We could put it in the garage, and might at some time, but for now, it's good where it is.
