@@otisthecow It's gotten a new design manager who has done video critiques of music notation software, including Musescore, so hopefully that means that it'll start getting better. His channel is Tantacrul
Thanks for shout-out! You are 100% right. We only used the VDL cymbal and bass drum parts mixed subtlety in the audio track. The original plan was to use only pad sounds but we ultimately decided to allow cymbal and bass drum players to have their "voice" heard as they could very easily be masked in the sea of "pad" timbres. That said, all pads seen on camera are in fact heard in the mix.
Fun Fact : Drum Line 2 : We played these drum parts live ....inside of a studio that was not treated for this type of recording . We didn’t even record on this Mapex drums. There was a mixture of drums. On Drum Line part 1 ...we recorded inside of a warehouse type studio .
As an audio engineer I can kinda tell now that I know that a lot of post processing was done to try to correct the acoustics. Explains why everything is EQed half to death and over compressed. Compressed reverb has a distinct sound and it's all over this. I thought it was weird but this explains it I guess. They should've planned better and listened to you.
In "The Best Drumline Ever" version - its very possible they recorded each drum individually (with what sounds like a close mic and stereo room mics) to get a sample. Mix each sample to sound as perfect as you can, then import samples to software. Boom, "perfect" drumline!
@@james7110 There's just not enough room ambiance to account for the type of space that they appear to be in in the video. There's also no bleed through between the different instrument tracks. This is not a knock on the group. If you want to do a professional promotion video and you want it to sound as good as it looks, recording the audio in the studio is the way to go.
This was done in Nashville for the Keith Urban tour at the time(I think it was Keith Urban). These guys are all current or former MCM, SCV, Phantom, and other DCI/WGI members. Good people, legit hands, tons of years of experience in that vid.
Agreed, it's way too clean mixing wise to be a single line recorded together, and of course it's not the audio from the video shoot. They could even have quantized the audio in post and shifted video frames subtly to make everything line up flawlessly. Though it would be cheaper to sync a virtual drum line to video and with processing and mixing it could sound about the same, it is apparently a real performance recorded in sections and synced to video. Since they are real pros chances are they didn't need to quantize anything, and if they did it was probably to make the tempo to sample ratio be on point for all the vidsync, not because it was noticeably out of time but for digital editing precision. It could explain the absolute perfection with a click track. I don't at all doubt that those guys are good enough on their own, it just makes sense from a production standpoint.
An engineer who is a drummer (other engineers too) can shift and warp parts to clean up a dirty line. Additionally, it is fairly easy to use samples to replace different drums. It's done with drum set recordings all the time. In fact, I have stacked single parts and displaced hits to make it sound a little dirtier. If the engineer is good enough, it can be hard to distinguish real from virtual/hybrid.
That cadence tenor fill from bunco at 4:35 was awesome. This was the cadence I played with my line on snare my 8th and freshman years. I remember always hearing that sweep section and loving it.
I think the one reason that hybrid drumline video worked so well is because most of the tenors used Xymox Tenor Kicks, so only basses and cymbals needed melodic line reinforcing
From the looks of it, you should probably do more of these 4 second challenges. There seems to be a lot of requests for it. And I personally can't wait for more of the facebook jams.
As someone who composes using Virtual Drumline sounds, I was definitely able to tell the difference. I’d say the industry demand for drumlines is pretty good and I love seeing drumline sounds of any kind in anything non-band. There’s a recent one that’s called High School Musical: The Musical that uses VDL in its soundtracks.
My late husband, a professional musician, hated CDs because the sound was "too cold" - and the first one the difference was clear. The humans were playing live. I quit keeping track at that point.
4:33 Did you get that from a certain high school drumline, where I might go, where the drumline director made it himself, and we played it for BOA San Antonio?
Lol i have an electronic track (and my band has a rock song) i'm working on that i feel like would pass the virtual drumline test even though its recorded with an octopad instead of Virtual Drumline. So out of the stuff that made him wonder about the first clip, it matches to a click, i kept it a little dirty to sell the effect of multiple people playing, its mixed and mastered, and i don't think the roland octopad uses pearl samples.
I wonder how many big productions like.. what’s it called? Oh yeah, drumline.. might actually use supplemental drum replacement with VDL sounds like many pop mix engineers do when the drum set sounds like garbage (or just not present enough) and a sample gets layered back over the acoustic drum sound.
There is another virtual drumline sound library available called "rumble," recorded by the blue devils. Most people don't use it because it's $100 more than the one from tapspace, and it doesn't sound as good.
I think the Drumline 2 parts were recorded in a studio, which is why it sounds overproduced. But it's real drum audio, and also probably the same performers we are seeing, just a separate take.
VDL isn't the only library, so it is possible there are fake drums that may sound real just because they don't sound like VDL... but were using a different library (such as Rumble). Also... EQ.
I genuinely realized I'm very bad with the difference. Although there is a commercial where it's obvious there's a track because they're not even playing the right rhythms
What are some more songs/movies/shows/ads/etc that use drumline in the soundtrack?
EMCproductions hi dad
First one I can remember hearing is "Lose My Breath," Destiny's Child
Capt'n Underpants^^
I'm pretty sure some of the background music from Glee has a good chunk of drumline in it

I'm 90% sure the "compose a comment" is the musescore MDL sounds
Correct. You are a 90% true pro.
EMCproductions aww he beat me to it I hate working with it though. Muse score 3 like to crash alot
EMCproductions you’re 100% percent pro
@@otisthecow It's gotten a new design manager who has done video critiques of music notation software, including Musescore, so hopefully that means that it'll start getting better. His channel is Tantacrul
Those Musescore sounds also sound alot like a drumline sound library that was made by RowLoff Productions years ago

It turned out great! Definitely a good call laying those sounds. What program was used to edit the video? I need more 3D split-screens in my life.

Very interesting. They did you guys an injustice with how they recorded and mixed the track for the sequel.
Yes we tried to tell them that it wouldn’t sound right but hey 🤦🏾♂️

Yes, I think they recorded the audio in a studio and then sync'ed it to the video.
I figured that because the mic sounded too close to those drums XD

Every middle school percussionist wants to know your location
Fun fact- Death Grips sampled Blue Devils "Ditty" for all of their drumline samples
Josh Quintal we know dis🥱🥱

yessir that cadence is actual fire, the measure near the end with the high left hand hertas was so fun
9:10 that is definitely the musescore drumline snare drum sound font, i can recognize that anywhere
9:12 Drum kit (and Eric) quarantined in a Utility Closet! 🤣 Best Quarantine Video: KU Drumline
9:11 It’s the MuseScore Drumline Snare. It has a very distinct sound.
My band directors went to Morris Brown, and they are actually in Drumline! They said it was one of the coolest experiences they have ever had.
We need a part 2
The Kutztown video is my favorite from this set and one of the most impressive musical quarantine videos I have seen.
Thanks for watching! We had a blast making it.
KU Drumline what software did you use to achieve the visual effect? I’m trying to recreate a similar thing in final cut pro.
Cal Martine Adobe AfterEffects
As a KU Marching Unit alumni, it was cool to see them included.
Thanks for putting in the KU Drumline in ur vid this was really cool
GO KU! That video is LEGIT!!
plot twist: he’s been playing clarinet this whole time and disguising it with virtual drumline
I think the one reason that hybrid drumline video worked so well is because most of the tenors used Xymox Tenor Kicks, so only basses and cymbals needed melodic line reinforcing
4:32 I see you there playing Bunco Rules
The drummer for static x actually preformed brain fog during a concert
The mixing in drumline the newbeat might be they recorded it in a studio y sections, then muted the audio on the field
It be cool to find the people, and interview them to what actually happened
From the looks of it, you should probably do more of these 4 second challenges. There seems to be a lot of requests for it.

I knew your intro was virtual! It’s mostly the tenors that make the difference between real and virtual in my opinion.
3:12 it was inevitable
Woah! I first thought, dang it was I supposed to cover my eyes when you played the first clip? But no, VDL got me fooled. This thing is amazing!
The first drumline video is definitely recorded with real drums, but im confident its a studio audio recording layered over a video of them playing.
As someone who composes using Virtual Drumline sounds, I was definitely able to tell the difference. The virtual sounds to artificial, marched in did drum line for five years, love your change a blessed day 🙏
Good morning y'all. Keep up the great work, Eric!
Loving the throwback pic eric with a juice box
Thank you so so so so so much for using Death Grips
Have you ever tried Sample Logic's Rumble? I would be curious to hear what you think about that vs VDL.
3:18 he could've started playing the box
Good morning everyone I hope you have a good day
I believe they eqed the virtual drum line in the first one because they sound exactly the same but with more low end
Oh god he learned megalovania
EMCproductions thank you for making amazing content during this time i am really thankful and really enjoy your videos
Smoothest transition in the end!!
Thank you Mr. EMC for all the content I hope all is well
Death Grips - Takyon has a few brief drumline parts
Yeah that first drumline was probably real. You can usually just tell by how they're playing if it's not, those guys are just good
Glee used virtual drumline during dialogue scenes as well.
I already knew about the "MU" one cause I already saw the behind the scenes
Your Virtual Drumline version of the Drumline: New Beat sounded more real than the actual movie.
At 4:33 where is that from? It sounds like a cadence that my school plays
There’s a possibility that the first one is at least a little spliced. But if it’s not and they were that in time, that’s impressive
That's bunco rules if I'm not mistaken. I remember it as a Cavies cadence.
I like your vids dude, you put some real effort in to them, it's not easy!! 👌
I love watching all of your videos and it inspired me to write my own music on MuseScore
I'm pretty sure that the first one was virtual because of the mixing, or it was recorded in a studio.

For the drum line the movie part there is a weird pause right after the tap-off and before they start playing
This guy actually made tenors out of bass drums
Disappointed that "Lose my Breath" by Destiny's Child was not featured in the rapid-fire round, can you keep up?
Does anyone know if in 8:00 he did a juggle toss

Bunco on tenor basses was dope.
You made me doubt myself oh god
New Beat sounds like the same track compressed and quantized overdubbed onto itself
What about jcole’s “Rise and Shine” or Krizz Kaliko’s “Do You Drink” (the end)

in Drumline a New Beat, I was wondering if they used reverb. Certainly sounded like there was reverb .
Rocket League: Beckwith Park. Score a goal and a Cadence will play. Please review that
yes
The snares at 7:26 are playing well but the tuning of the actual snares sounds like poopoo
if only the celebrity "imagine" montage was as well coordinated as this
For the "best drumline ever" video the audio and video were probably recorded seperately
This was lowkey fun
Imma comment on every new video that post saying you should do a learn the beats on double beat 9000, love your content though keep it up
What I learned from this video is that humans are better than computers until they’re too good and then they’re worse
VDL isn't the only library, so it is possible there are fake drums that may sound real just because they don't sound like VDL... but were using a different library (such as Rumble). Also... EQ.
EMC based for adding Mr Grip
I genuinely realized I'm very bad with the difference. Although there is a commercial where it's obvious there's a track because they're not even playing the right rhythms
Heyyyy someone on the DPD teched our highschool pit! His names dan, hes awesome!
EMC is noided
Glee uses drumline music (virtual or real I’m not sure) all the time
you should have us listen to electronic drum set players and determine if they are playing real fake sounds or if it is just fake fake sounds
You have to check out Rumble and Impakt by Sample Logic. Personally I think they sound better than Virtual Drumline.
That first video was SCV, and they also recorded the sounds for VDL... so
PLEASE BRING THE BEARD BACK!!
There all virtual, we live in a simulation
Nice dude
So the way to get virtual sounding realistic is just make like 20 of the same line with an instrument slightly off a bit so it’s dirty...
At the end I thought it said big *ocks instead of big gocks
Analyze the Glee drums please!
