You're so right about that. I found the infrastructure of this wintercup to be very "budget". Could've been in the gym next door, with a local audience. Probably the reason why many of the real stars decline to participate. Kudos to Suni and Kayla di Cello.
Problem is she wanted to perform well so hat she could be chosen to go to a World Cup and get the skill named after her. Even if she goes to the Olympics I doubt she’d try it to get it named after her unless she has truly mastered the technique. Skills barely get named in Olympics

This meet isn’t completely necessary in the Olympic selection process, some are competing to qualify for the us championships, some are trying to get chosen for international competition. Simone is already qualified to championships because she is was on the world’s team last year, and obviously doesn’t need to gain any more international experience. So she is waiting until later in the season to save her body since she is basically guaranteed an Olympic spot anyway.

I am struggling to see a world where they will take an inconsistent event specialist when they have multiple AAers with potential to go 14+ on different events.

Yeah the video you saw was most likely podium training. She also nailed it during the team camp.
She hasn't competed elite gymnastics since 2021. Add to that health challenges. Maybe she's just nervous. Give her time. She'll bounce back.
