After hearing your interview, this is on my buy list. However, I'm one of those "hopeful" universalists you don't like, but I lean strongly on the side of "It will happen." :p

Let us struggle with all our powers to gain Paradise. The gate is very narrow, and don’t listen to those who say that everyone will be saved. This is a trap of Satan so that we won’t struggle.
    -St. Paisios the Athonite

@@mgd2000rb St Paisios’ writings are very revered but they aren’t dogmatic in the Church. I recognize he disagrees with myself and St Gregory of Nyssa and St Basil the Great and St Maximus the Confessor and Fr Sergius Bulgakov and St Isaac the Syrian and many others. Moreover, I respond directly to this type of statement that universalism leads to a lack of struggle in Chapter 13.. but I get the feeling you aren’t interested in a serious discussion.

    • @mgd2000rb

@ St Maximus was not an universalist. And yes, you disagree with St Justin Martyr, St Theophilus of Antioch, St Irinaeus, St Cyprian, St Cyril, St John Maximovitch, St Nektarios, the canons of the fifth ecumenical councils, the synod of Moldova, synod of Jerusalem, the liturgical texts of the church, etc.
You assumed my disposition simply based on a quote I posted. If you have something shorter I could read I will take a look, although I do not believe the universalist position is tenable considering the overarching attitude the Church has maintained towards it throughout the centuries.

@@mgd2000rb St Cyril of Alexandria, St Maximus the Confessor, and St Iraneus of Lyons were Universalists , and St Justin the Martyr had universalist tendencies as well (he's in limbo though). Also, the 5th Ecumenical Council didn't really condemn Apokastasis but rather the Origenists that claimed that Origen preached the pre existence of souls. Also, St Gregory of Nysa's theology is basically a continuation and refinement of Origen's work and yet he was not condemned. Origen was also revered and respected for 500 years and all of a sudden two to three hundred years after his death they condemned him a heretic. Oh please...

      @
Hmm… those are interesting claims. Have the quotes to back it up?
“We believe that they who live wickedly and do not repent will be punished in everlasting fire […] [Jesus] shall come from the heavens in glory with his angelic host, when he shall raise the bodies of all the men who ever lived. Then he will clothe the worthy in immortality; but the wicked, clothed in eternal sensibility, he will commit to the eternal fire, along with the evil demons” (St. Justin Martyr, First Apology 12, 21, 52)
“The penalty increases for those who do not believe the Word of God and despise his coming… [I]t is not merely temporal, but eternal. To whomsoever the Lord shall say, ‘Depart from me, accursed ones, into the everlasting fire,’ they will be damned forever” (St Irenaeus,Against Heresies 4:28:2)
“We shall be raised therefore, all with our bodies eternal, but not all with bodies alike: for if a man is righteous, he will receive a heavenly body, that he may be able worthily to hold converse with angels; but if a man is a sinner, he shall receive an eternal body, fitted to endure the penalties of sins, that he may burn eternally in fire, nor ever be consumed.”
      (St Cyril, Catechetical Lectures 18:19)
“…but for those who freely have used the structure of their being contrary to nature, it properly bestows not well-being but ever-ill-being, since well-being is no longer accessible to them who have taken up an opposing stand to it, who have no power at all to move after the revelation of what has been sought - the revelation to seekers of the goal of their seeking.” (St Maximus, The Responses to Thalassios)

@@thecarlitosshow7687I don’t agree with everything here, especially regarding St Justin because I don’t think he was a universalist but this is a solid reply. See nuances on the fifth council in Chapter 10 as well as the doctrines condemned in the 15 anathemas of 553.

@@dissatisfiedphilosophyYou’re a smart guy, don’t fall for the philosopher’s trap (like Origen) where they can’t accept dogma that is such a clear teaching because of their preconceived ideals.
I’d enjoy having a healthy discussion on this but I admit I’m not as philosophically literate, yet Scripturally I hope by God’s grace I could make the case for ECT.
I will concede that if God actually desires the salvation of all, and not all end up being saved there is a problem. That’s why I’d argue the only Scripturally and logically sound argument is that Christ only died for His people (as the Scripture says) and the rest are left with their free-will choice to reject Him. This is backed up by a plethora of verses such as the argument of Romans 9, Jesus saying He lays down His life for the sheep, etc.
Being Eastern Orthodox and believing in synergism I understand you’d be blind to the truth of what the Scriptures teach about the sovereignty of God in salvation and election.

I discuss Scripture throughout Part 2 as stated in the video. For your case reading what I say about Romans 9-11 (involving sovereignty) would be fruitful as well as sheep and goats which is also discussed in Chapter 9. Good for you. Thanks for addressing this subject. Ignore the envy, many religious people thrive on cutting down others. I have learned more from uneducated Theresa of Lisieux than all the theologians who ever lived. I am more and more interested in the subject of universal salvation precisely because of the anger and un-Christian example of religious people.
