OS:
KaiOS is a Linux-based mobile operating system that "merges the power of a smartphone with the affordability of a feature phone". It is forked from B2G (Boot to Gecko), an open source community-driven successor of Firefox OS which was discontinued by Mozilla in 2016.
Primary features of KaiOS is to bring support of 4G LTE E, GPS and Wi-Fi with HTML5-based apps and longer battery life onto non-touch devices with optimized user interface, less memory and energy consumption. A dedicated app marketplace called KaiStore enables users to download application. Some services come preloaded as HTML5 applications, including Twitter, Facebook and UA-cam. It is very light and is able to run on devices with just 256 MB of memory.

I have the Tracfone version, BTW - but if the app's unavailable, I easily got the UA-cam website itself to work. Not the same as an app, sure, but it's something.
I'm really impressed that they upgraded the video playback functionality so it switches to landscape view in full screen. That was one of the detractors in the previous version of the phone.
The Go Flip 3 has newer software, but the hardware specs are almost the same as this (Go Flip 1). The Go Flip 3 is $60-$100 online right now, but this one is under $10. So this is 10x cheaper, which is big price difference for pretty much the same device :) Great value, and nice review!
Does the my flip work on T-mobile lte?
The 3 version has upgrades in the software that reportedly make it run better than its predecessors. I've had it for about 6 months as my primary phone and it is amazing. I'm not getting the 2-3 day battery life many reference, but think that's a battery issue.

@@thomasanreise3107 shame I can't upgrade my version 1 of the flip. I like it for what it can do but it's just too limited considering that it's essentially a os run phone.
the advantage that the first version of Alcatel Go Flip with KaiOS 1.0 has is that it can be debugged (therefore applications can be developed on it). MyFlip and Go Flip 3 don't have this option (no debugging and no ADB), so the user will have newer software, but he won't be free to do whatever he wants with it.
I had flip phone for 20 yrs, no tech issues---no viruses, no patches, no
distracting apps. You're free to focus, I'm in my 30s no problems

Actually Go Flip 1 did not have KaiStore because KaiStore did not exist in 2017.
Kai store sucks for the most part. Only decent app I did downloaded was 'UC browser.' News app? HHAAA!!! Most 'news' is political...most sports(that I saw, was 'english soccer related,' and some Mid-East type apps.

The only problem is the battery goes dead every 24 hours regardless if used or not. I bought a new battery, same problem. I loved my old flip more better but they stopped serving 3 G.
I been using my go flip 3 for a year, I wont go back to a smartphone again and I'm 39 years old.
I have an original Alcatel GoFlip, but I dropped it on concrete & the hinge cracked & 2 or 3 months later, it quit working, but I've ordered an original MyFlip on eBay so I can swap the motherboards & export my contacts &c.
Do these Phones receive security updates like other smart phones? My current flip is an older model with Kaios Ver 1.00 . Not sure if this is a security issue. Thanks
There is a web browser on my 2001 pink nokia my mom had. Flip phone. Tell me when kai has basic apps such as whatsapp, youtube app and a messenger app. It will only be worth it then. It has lots to improve by now.

It's pretty good and does everything a phone needs to do. Mine was dropped hard and went through the wash/dry cycle, I thought it would be inoperable after that but it started right up. Takes forever to type out a message though and the camera isn't very good.
When it comes to texting, I've found that effectively its basically a wash between typing on the numeric key pad and on a qwerty keyboard on a smartphone. I've found that when I type on a smartphone I tend to make many mistakes because the keys are small (I type with my right thumb and end up hitting the wrong letters, as an example hitting a "K" when I meant to hit an "O" and hitting a "B" instead of the spacebar). I end up not noticing my mistake until I've typed three or four more letters, requiring me to backspace and correct. With the numeric keypad, although my typing speed is slower, I make fewer actual errors (when I make a mistake it is usually I go past the letter and have to circle around back to it) so I don't have go back and make corrections. However, this is only the case when I don't use T9, for me its faster to just forgo it.

I am considering getting a flip phone and I need to choose between this one and the Kyocera DuraXV Extreme.
This one is surprisingly the better choice only because of VoLTE and wifi calling. KaiiOS also allows remote wipe of the phone like Blackberry.

got the myflip--sent to me cause my LG old flip died--well, have you tried this phone? I cant even set the clock--all it gives is options for timer/alarm/etc. the day/month on it now is incorrect--Anybody out there know how to get the clock settings to real time? & how to transfer fotos from the oldphone to this new one if it works?

OSReviews, I have the Tracphone in your video, but I don't have all those apps. The apps that I have are WiFi, volume, brightness, cellular data, camera, bluetooth, calculator, and airplane mode. Is this an older version? I just bought it.

Can you make the font size bigger?
Yes. It has two sizes, regular and large. I estimate that large is twice the size of regular in most places on the phone, and the text size setting affects the entire phone (however, on the main screen it only increases the text size slightly).

I had the original GoFlip, which didn't have the Kai Store, so no WhatsApp, but the messages app app worked fine for SMS, but MMS(texts with pictures, videos, audio, &c) was sometimes a bit flaky. Presumably that's been improved.

@shelly woodward On my phone I went to 'contacts' selected highlighted contact"OK"...'options' on top right...there will be a list such as 'edit' and ''call'-scroll down to 'settings'-"OK"..... then you will see 3 options..1 will be 'set speed dial contacts'-"OK"...then you will see "1 Voice mail and 2-9 for speed dial numbers. IF there is not contact in your sped dial the number will show "Empty". Now that is on my phone, I don't know if yours is the same.

I would not get this phone it’s a horror story! It works and then it doesn’t work. I try to get help and even with all the troubleshooting that last for more then a hour it then doesn’t work when I hang up with technical support. This phone with leave you with the condition what is called learned helplessness!! I’m paranoid to spend money on another flip phone that doesn’t work like this one!
Maybe it's a defect? If it's the battery they are really cheap so maybe try that or a new phone will have to be bought

The only person who would want this phone is a Senior citizen that cant deal with tech. A person like that will only be interested in call quality. Its a friggin phone. Your review did not even touch on how well it works as a phone. Therefore, the review is pretty worthless.

Too bad it has all that Google spyware.
It is not as "baked in" as Android, however. Even barebones AOSP omitting all GApps cannot evade the Google APIs. KaiOS, being derived from FirefoxOS, can shut off Google Tracking in the settings. The $22 Mil. that Alphabet pumped into KaiOS only ensures the default settings are turned on to allow data collection but you can turn it off. Most people are either not tech-savvy enough or too lazy to do so.
A phone without whatsapp is useless
Your opinion is irrelevant and useless, not the phone : Kai OS is made first and foremost for poor people, so tell that to people from countries like India where the majority of the people simply can't buy a smartphone and don't even know what WhatsApp is or that WhatsApp even exists. Just going on the web on a little screen is already a major improvement for most of them.
