  • Hollywood on Parade was a series of short subjects produced by Paramount Pictures between 1932 and 1934. They showcased the studio's stars both in newsreel-type footage (glimpses of Hollywood figures at premieres, parties, the races, etc.) and in new material such as sketches or musical numbers. The print quality of these isn't the greatest, but nevertheless there's some interesting stuff here. Also note that there's a numbering system associated with these shorts, but because some of the information I've found is conflicting and confusing, I just made up my own numbers to differentiate between them.
In this installment, Cliff Edwards sings and plays his uke to introduce the various segments. First, Clarence Muse sings a song about the Congo while Warren William listens. Next, there's a bit of footage of Jean Harlow playing golf. Then, we're off to the races in Mexico to watch a number of stars watch the horses. These include Alice White, Joan and Constance Bennett, William Powell and Carole Lombard, Wheeler and Woolsey, Raquel Torres, Harry Langdon, and Polly Moran. Lastly, we're treated to a song sung by a Mexican group and dedicated to Lupe Velez.

OMGosh!! The brilliant Cliff Edwards playing and introducing a tux wearing Clarence Muse, who was not singing a plantation song, who spoke with and shook hands (!) (in the early 30's yet!!) with Warren Willliam, the little white pill reference, Jean's no bra walk, Flapper, Alice White, the reference to horse whisper, Bert and Bob, the sweet guitar and ode to the tragic Lupe, chiquita--sweet senorita-- Cooper, then the brilliant Cliff Edwards playing us off...just a magical Hollywood On Parade!!

Jean Harlow looked like she could've been a decent athlete. The Bennet sisters, Carole Lombard and William Powell at the track. Great vid!

You didn't mention that Lupe Velez is dancing with Gary Cooper in the clip from "The Wolf Song."

In the opening, it looks as though Cliff [Ukelele Ike] Edwards is distributing urine onto a wall of music.
