    As usual great video Bill. I think hidden value or value play watches are the way to go for high and exceptional horology, as the prices for pre-owned is pretty low compared to what is in the watch. I think also that some A. Lange & Söhne watches can be bought for a bargain also, and i think it has a high potential to increase value in the future. I did post it on the facebook page, but i don't know if it is correct.
    Best,
    Abdul

      Hey Adbul, are you going after an A. Lange & Söhne? Those are crazy beautiful watches and movements. .... and if I've told you guys once, I've told you a thousand times! Don't worry about re-sale value! Focus of horological value, and A. Lange & Söhne has that in spades! Cheers, Bill

    • @AbdulRWatches
      @AbdulRWatches 6 років тому

      Yes, A Lange & Söhne are one of the brands that i would sell almost all my watches to get a Lange 1, or save up to get one. I always say enjoy the watch, don't think about resale value, but Lange new and pre-owned is around 30-50% price difference, and i think in the future, they will even command more. I posted my picks on the facebook group in a new post, i didn't if i should past it as a comment or as a new discussion.
      Have a great weekend.
      best,
      Abdul

    Great video Bill. Thanks.
    The hand date is so named because the date is indicated by a pointer rather than wheels in a window.
    Where did you find that price on the Villaret? Was it a one-off or from a site that regularly has discounts that deep?

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 років тому

      Hey Jeremy, thanks man! So the sub-dial with the date is indicated by the sub-dial's hand; hence, 'Hand Date'-makes perfect sense. I learned something today! Kindest regards, Bill

    Love the Breguet 5157. Question: If you had to choose between the Breguet 5157 and the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia thin manual wound, which one would you choose and why?

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  4 роки тому +1

      Heinrich, that's a tough one because I like both watches, but given that choice I'd go with the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia. The Why? has more to do with the insides of the Saxonia... I think the movement in the Saxonia Thin is a tad better than then 5157. Looks wise, I prefer the 5157 ... classier, and I like the 3Hz movement but ... silicon hairspring? I know the advantages of using silicon, but to me that's the entry door to more silicon until you get to a Smart watch. At 38mm the 5157 is just a little bigger than the 37mm Saxionia... a plus. Still if presented with the choice I'd still go with the Saxonia. However, since I have that slot filled with a Patek Philippe Calatrava 3468 (only about 33mm) I don't get excited about either. In that price range, here's what I'd get: www.cellinijewelers.com/watches/brands/h-moser-cie/endeavour-center-seconds-concept-blue-lagoon-stainless-steel or this one: www.h-moser.com/en/collection/2327-0200-white-gold-white-laquered-dial Take care and be safe, Bill 😷

    Hello Bill,
    I am quite interested in Glashutte Original. You mentioned they may be "on the fringe of high horology." In your opinion, what would they have to do to be confirmed high horology?

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 років тому

      Hi RP, the GOs have some great-looking watches. Among high horology, they are on the lower parts of the tier, but their prices reflect that. Generally a good buy, and as noted, I especially like the Panos and Senator 1960s. Cheers Bill

    Hi Bill, another nice video. I am interested is a H.Moser Endeavor small seconds but have read in the internet that moser watches run fast like 10 to 13 seconds per day, since you have one I would like to know if you have noticed this in yours. Thanks and cheers

      Hi Akula! The H. Moser Endeavor small seconds is a delicious watch! I have no doubt that someone has an Endeavor whose watch needs service and is running fast, but my Moser is perfectly accurate. You can find a few left at collectorstime.com/brands/h-moser--cie. Love your videos Bill! I don’t own GO, but am looking closely at the Panomaticlunar, so appreciate your coverage of the brand and line.
    Another watch I’m considering is a Ulysse Nardin. Where would you place them on the horological scale?

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  4 роки тому

      L. Champ, both GO and UN are on the same level, but both have good choices. It would depend on a model-to-model comparison. Huge fan of the UN Regatta (but it's expensive) and both the GO PanoReserve and the GO PanoInverse are very cool watches. Tough choice, but make your choice on a particular watch rather than the brand as a whole. Good hunting! Bill

    • @lchamp7946
      @lchamp7946 4 роки тому

      WatchArtSci Thanks for the reply Bill. Thinking about the UN Dual Time with precious metal case. It’s on 70% discount at the moment at Jomas, which puts it in the same price range as grey market GO Panomaticlunar. Tough choice for me, but I think that either is a good choice. Anyway, take care and best to you and yours to stay safe and healthy.

    Surprised by your embrace of Harry Winston, the jeweler to the stars of Hollywood ! Harry was famous for diamond necklaces, pins, and rings - certainly was not a watchmaker when he was alive. Swatch bought the company from his bickering sons and began making watches with the Harry brand name - how is that horologically desirable?
    For those unaware, see his storied history here:
    nymag.com/nymetro/news/bizfinance/biz/features/1028/

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 років тому

      Hey ForbinColossus, the article didn't mention the innovation in Harry Winston watches that HW had nothing to do with. Not only the Opus series, but work with Agenhor and watchmakers like Gerard-Perregaux really did not involve anything other than hiring the right talented people. Like I said, it is not a watch for beginners. Cheers, Bill

    • @ForbinColossus
      @ForbinColossus 6 років тому +1

      Hi Bill,
      I am guessing you read this article:
      iwmagazine.com/education/20160315/looking-back-harry-winston-timepieces/
      Admittedly, the other article I posted the link to is more about real life Winston legacy drama

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 років тому +1

      ForbinColossus, no I contacted Gerard-Perregaux and found the movement and the fact that GP had made the movement, even finding the HW-labeled rotor. Then I contacted Agenhor and corresponded with Nicolas Wiederrecht who provided further details and sent me a picture of the AGH-2351-the retrograde module that they made for the watch. I also corresponded with a Chinese expert on HW and found that both Jean-Marc Wiederrecht and Roger Dubuis were doing work for HW at the time. I think I might have a very different notion of research than most. Sometimes articles online just don't have the information I need; so I go to the source. Kindest regards, Bill

    A watch that lists at $21K but sells pre-owned for $3k should be avoided, no? IMO collectors should also avoid Harry Winston. My test is if the leading auction houses won't touch them, neither should I.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 років тому +3

      iimanIDavid No. A $21k watch selling pre-owned for $3k is a great deal, assuming 1) It's in good condition, and 2) doesn't have a junk movement. Harry Winstons are not for beginners in watch collection because you have to research the movement and history of the HW watches. If you want to wear a 're-sale value' based on auctions; that's fine, and you'll probably over-pay for a watch that may be mediocre at best. If you find out about the horological value of a watch in terms of movement, materials, production number and quality, that's where you'll find all the affordable gems. The asking price on my HW has gone up $2k since I bought it, but I could care less. I bought a watch is a great movement and retrograde module by one of the greatest living watchmakers on earth; Jean-Marc Wiederrecht. Cheers, Bill
