      So far so good. Loved having it on my last backpacking trip kept everyone’s stuff secure. You can not lock it from the inside. Plan on putting an electronic lock on so I can lock it with my key fob.

      Honestly I haven’t personally looked at the ranger. The people who I have talked to that have them seem to really like them. I’ll have to try and look more into it. Although you can’t go wrong with a Tacoma if you end up not liking it you will be able to sell it for close to what you bought it for.

      No problem thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. That’s a bummer they don’t make shells for the ranger. I would imagine they have something in the works? I have never seen the RLD’s, did a quick search and they look pretty awesome I’ll have to look more into it. You are in the place I was like 2 years ago. Totally researching the truck you want I obsessed over it for like a year haha. The Tacoma was pricey but I did a lot of online quotes and got it for 6k under what they asked for at the dealer down the street from me. As far as the rear drums no issue so far. I haven’t taken it in any crazy Offroad trails but I had them on my keep and I didn’t have an issue. I will say the visibility takes some getting use to. I plan on installing a front camera to make it easier for those steep trails.

      Leer customer service and quality control is terrible. I purchased the Leer 122 and the windows leaked and one side window would not latch. I called the truck shop who installed it and they didn't know how to fix it. Leer website contact section doesn't work. They never responded to my emails. I had the truck shop where I ordered the Leer camper top provide me with his Leer local sales rep. I called and informed him of the issue. The Leer sales rep even admitted the Leer web site contact email doesn't work. I had the Leer camper top shipped back to Leer manufacturing plant for repairs. They shipped it back and it still leaks! My camper top was purchased in June, 2020

      Sorry to hear that, wish their customer service was better I called them a while back and was able to get through but not sure how they are operating now with COVID. Either way you would hope the contact form would work. Seems like a lot of these companies do not have great customer service. Hopefully you get it straightened out.

    I had a Leer topper on my 1983 Ford Ranger back in the day . It was quality built , never had any issues with it , never leaked , and I actually sold it separately from the sale of the truck for $500 after 10 years of ownership. ( back in those days you get those things for a $1,000 -$1,200 , so I got half of my money back from it . Now I’m waiting for my 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road Long Bed to arrive and I will definitely put another Leer topper on it .

    I second the side win-doors and especially if you use a hitch rack or cary anything behind the truck. Spent a week mountain biking with buddies and used side win-doors more than rear door to access gear.

    I sell both, and SnugTop as well. Leer does a pretty good job. ARE seems to use cheaper parts, depending on the model of course, but I agree, I would have gone with the Leer 100XR. Their side vented windoors are different than what ARE and SnugTop uses, and I think they're much better. I also like the style of the Leer. I have sold quite a few of the exact shell you have here. Nice review-to anyone shopping, he lays it all out pretty well.

      @@ia6980 That glass that slides within the side glass is rather unique, but I'll tell you what I don't like about that top. Aside from ARE NOT using a fuse box or wiring harness, and they use the neoprene foam cap tape instead of a double bulb rubber base seal, the other thing I don't like about the Revo is the curved glass rear door. We've had a bunch of problems with it-doesn't seal right, doesn't open smooth, and the way they ground the 3rd brake light is crappy. None of those things you can see in pictures.

      Prices coming down? Not likely. Leer is owned by a financial group, which owns SnugTop and many other aftermarket brands. ARE is way overpriced for the quality of what they produce in my opinion. I wouldn't expect prices to come down anytime soon. @@freidrichnietzsche6643

    I'm on my second Leer 180 shell. First was on a 2014 Tacoma. Fit and finish was a bit sloppy. Rear window/hatch needed to be adjusted but I did it myself to make sure it was done right. The carpeted headliner was thin and sloppy. Never a leak. Paint and finish were great.... no issue over 6 years.
    Just had a Leer 180 installed on my 2020 Tundra. It took 10 weeks for delivery.... I guess the virus thing held it up. Was back and forth with my local dealer as I had plans. I had the Thule roof rack factory installed (good suggestion.... didn't want to drill a brand new cap)... but they didn't ship the keys for the Thule locks on the bars.... still dealing with that.... as others have stated.... their customer service SUCKS! I also had the carpeted headliner installed (much thicker and better quality than the 2014 cap. Also had the front drop down slider window installed.... better air circulation.... and now I can clean the outside cab and cap windows! Well worth it....Overall the new cap is better than the 2014.... paint is a perfect match and they included a bottle of touch up paint. Fit and finish are pretty good... no leaks thus far.
    Total cost with all the options, installation, tax.... $2,900.
    ALWAYS check the LEER website... they have special offers for free or discounted accessories.... I got the drop down sliding window for free.... just had to tell the dealer and show him the Leer website. They won't tell you unless you ask.... and the freebies and discounts are a little tricky to find on their website. The dealer said I needed a code.... I showed him the website and he magically made it happen.... no CODE needed. Negotiate your price first.... then mention the free item you want to add to the cap.

      Thanks for commenting, I need to make like a Q&A with all the good feedback people place on the videos. I liking having the input of people who have had the shells for a while and know some of the "tips and tricks". Kind of a bummer their customer service is so poor. I guess because they don't have a lot of competitors they don't really care about customer service.
      That is one thing I think I forgot to mention was the website incentives when I bought my shell they were doing the rebate, But definitely negotiate first.
      Thanks again for your comment.

    New sub and awesome video here. I'm spec'ing out my overlanding/do everything '16 Silverado and agree. Windoors for the win (for multiple reasons)! I have a transferflow 50 gallon aux tank in the bed to feed my 6.2 v8 and i needed to reach the filler neck on and needed windoors to do that. I thought about the Softopper but ultimately seemed like throwing good money after bad.

I still have a lot of research to do and price comparisons on what options I can get (2018 Tacoma short bed). One question though, did you make that shelf in the bed or is that something you bought? I really like the different levels of storage, which is what caught my eye. Again, awesome video and will be watching more of your videos.

      Yeah I did some serious research before buying this LEER shell (definitely an investment for the price you can pay). There are some other smaller companies out there that make some great shells if you are wanting something more for the “overland” style truck set up.
      I made the platform myself. It’s a super easy build and I have a video on how I made it and a blog post on trentmmoore.com or offroadodyssey.co if you want some more detailed information and measurements on it.
      The drawer was built with all the leftover stuff from the platform build. I plan on improving the set up here in the near future so keep an eye out for that.

    I’ve had a Leer 100XL and an ARE z series, each from a different dealer. They both have had leaking windows right off the bat, my current ARE has rivets pulling through the rear window frame now, has never fitted my 2019 Ram box properly since I bought it, when you look carefully at any hardware you will see oversized holes drilled, then bolts, and nuts but no washers, I guess the oversized holes are for alignment, since all holes look like they were drilled by a blind man. The rear window moved side to side until I adjusted it. ARE will tell you to take it to your dealer. Those guys are not skilled trades men, they’re just hackers with tools. They used a big Dewalt drill to screw in my little 1/4” window screws and stripped everyone of them. Both Leer and ARE need to build a better unit. Forgot to mention my roof rails aren’t even parallel.

I definitely do not regret going with leer as they are literally built by the same company and look fine. I do regret spending an extra 500 on the cab-access slider as I have not used it once; wish I would have gotten the Wind doors but it would have been an extra grand and I was more concerned on throwing money towards the roof rack/rail system. Thank you for your video. Its content is very thorough and the relaxed pace is extremely helpful during the process of determining which Leer 100X series cap to purchase for our new 2020 DCSB Tacoma. Some questions. 1) Regarding the windoors: When the vented window is slid fully open, is the screen completely uncovered? If not, how much does the sliding glass overlap the screen? 2) Would you please measure: With the tailgate down and the rear cap door fully open, what is the distance from the center top of the cap rear door opening straight down vertical to the floor of the bed (between the ridges in the floor). 3) Would you measure: again with the tailgate down and the rear cap door fully open, what is the distance from the center top of the cap rear door opening down (on an angle) to the rear edge of the truck bed. 4) Regarding the rear cap door lower edge: How is that glossy black trim piece attached? Any clips or screws holding it on? Is the material encasing the latch cables plastic or fiberglass or what? How hard is the material? Does it give if you press on it? In your opiniion, will it crack or crush if it gets hit hard with something being loaded into the bed? 5) You have an 100XR with windoors. How does the 100XL with windoors differ? As far as I can glean from the minimal info on the Leer website, the only difference seems to be the rear door handle. Thanks.

      500lbs static 250 dynamic is what I was told. So a RTT shouldn’t be an issue. I haven’t had any issues with the shell sliding. I have heard it happening with weight on it and most people drill into the shell and use a large bolt to keep it in place.

    Hi Trent, thank you for the video. What roof rack are your running? What are pro and cons off having roof rack fitting into shell grooves vs using yakima with cross bars. I am trying to keep height minimal for clearance. Thks! p

    • @TrentMMoore
      @TrentMMoore  2 роки тому

      I currently only have the tracks to be able to mount a roof rack or something like the Yakima cross bars. I had them install the mounting tracks so I didn’t void my warranty when I decided to put a roof rack on.
      As far as the pros and cons, I think it depends on your use case. Something like the Yakima cross bars will be more cost effective but limit what you can mount on them. Where as a roof rack you could more easily use it as extra storage as well as mounting a roof top tent.
      I have minimal experience with both so maybe someone can comment that has used them more extensively but that is what I know from my experience.

    Did you like the topper more for camping? or utility? I ask because I mostly use my pickup with the open bed (tonneau mostly off) for construction and landscaping, but am thinking I want to outfit truck as part-time minimalist camper rather than rush to buy even a small or midsize RV/trailer.

    • @TrentMMoore
      @TrentMMoore  3 роки тому +3

      Honestly I like it for both reasons. I bought the shell with the thought of having a quick way to go camping and have everything I needed with me. After really using it the utility aspect has been more then I originally thought it would have been. I thought it would limit what I was able to hit in the bed of my truck, but for my use I have only had a couple of times where the shell has got in the way. For me the utility of having a secure place to store my gear when I am not at work or being able to keep larger items out of the element when transporting them has just been a plus for me. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching.

    I have an A.R.E. CX, and I agree with his comments about the build quality. It looks sloppy and the parts (including the seal) looks cheap. I don't think it will last. Also, I had issues with the shell leaking water into the bed. I had to bring it back to the dealer to fix the issue.

    • @TrentMMoore
      @TrentMMoore  3 роки тому

      Seems to be the case with ARE. Although it does seem that both companies have complaints of water leaking. I guess it just depends on if you have the people on their A game making your shell or not haha.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @dennismitchell4132
      @dennismitchell4132 3 роки тому

      Alan S , if the shell leaks that is an install issue and falls back on the dealer. It’s not as simple as throwing seals under the shell to stop the water. Unfortunately many dealers do not have the training or experience to understand that simple fact. If it was window leaks, those are easy enough to fix, again if the dealer is worth anything. 9 times out of 10 a good dealer makes the difference between a happy customer and an unhappy one.

    • @soldierz18
      @soldierz18 3 роки тому +1

      @Dennis M - You are correct the installer does matter, and he did fix the leak. However, the craftsmanship and quality of the cap is questionable. The screws are over torqued and the materials like the seals look flimsy. I don’t think the cap will last that long, maybe 3 years. Also, the model at the dealer looked well built, but when I received my cap, it looked like a newbie or a little child built it. Other UA-cam’s described the same issue.

    • @dennismitchell4132
      @dennismitchell4132 3 роки тому +1

      Alan S what I know for sure is that ARE doesn’t make their own doors and windows (same for all the major brands) and occasionally those manufacturers try to slip in some cheaper produced products to boost their profits. It’s a trickle down issue that effects the consumer first and has to become an issue noticed by the dealers first, passing the info back to ARE that there is an issue. They then confront the manufacture and require them to replace the suspicious inventory awaiting to be used at ARE. I’ve seen it a few times in my 35 years of selling their covers. The primary issue is that this can take weeks or even months to discover and thousands of covers can be built during that time and sent to the dealers for install. Those issues are avoided like the plague but they can still happen. That very scenario has caused ARE to switch window and door suppliers no less than 3 times in my 3 decades of selling their products, and those are the ones I’m aware of. Product quality is always a top priority but you’re only as good as the members of your team. If they don’t adhere to your standards you kick them to the curb and I’ve seen ARE do just that.
      Concerning the interior window ring, it is simply a thin ring of extruded aluminum meant to draw the outside window seals against the shell exterior. You have 2 choices, either draw it down firmly and assure the window is sealed or stop shy of drawing the ring in with the screw and risk a window leak. A heavier ring does not stop that fact, it simply raises the cost of an already expensive window. It will pull in with the screw just the same. The ring being puckered in with the screw doesn’t mean stripped, it means the installer was assuring it is fully tight.
      Not sure when you bought your ARE but all manufactures used foam window and door seals until ARE switched to rubber seals several years ago. Many continue to use foam seals, ARE was the first to stop. All modern ARE shells have rubber seals built into the door and window frames now. The rubber seals have proven to be superior especially a few years down the road.
      Hope that helps.

    I am on my second Leer topper. I must say I learned that the more expensive one SUCKS!!!! My first one had the frames on all the windows (like the side windows on this video). On the one with the frames the windows slide open and shut (no parts to break). On the top of line model that I have now (they call it the SUV style) with frameless side windows. The windows only tilt out about an inch or two (at the bottom) with a jalousy style twist crank and ALL the parts on the crank are the cheapest crap on the market (from the first time you open the side windows, you are waiting for the crank system to fail). The rear hinges on the rear window on my model constantly has the screws falling out and it had to go back to the dealer to get repaired 3 times. I think if Leer would swap mine out for their least expensive model today like I had first, I would do it in a heart beat. Also my friend had an ARE topper. The roof appeared to have more structional integrity than the Leer. The ARE model appears to have a sheet of PlyWood laminated into the roof. If I bought a new Leer topper I would get the least expensive model with the framed side windows and I would add the roof rack system even if I had no use for it, just for structional integrity.

      Carlos, without insulating your truck bed it's like trying to air condition your open patio at home, it's not going to happen. If you have a "Bedrug" bed system lining the interior it helps but only to a small degree. You also need some type of boot or window seal that closes off the window openings from the outside air, creating a neck between the cab and shell. Lastly, you'll need to add a fan blowing the air towards the truck bed. That all being said even if you do all of the above it will be next to impossible to match the cab air in temperature. At best you might see modest success in keeping the rear cooler while you freeze inside the cab.

      That's how they usual wire the light. There's no hot line (ignition on) for them to tap at the rear of the truck. They just tap the rear lights line.... you can always add a direct line yourself.

      Apologies for the delayed response, I meant to add this in the questions and answers video going out tomorrow. Like @imxploring said it is wired direct so it pulls from the battery even when the vehicle is off.

    Does the front window go down or open to give you access to the truck cab window?

    • @TrentMMoore
      @TrentMMoore  3 роки тому

      The shell has a sliding window you can open to gain access to the truck cab. The only downside is you would have to leave the back window of the truck open. This would make it so it isn’t weather tight. I have heard of people sealing up between the cab and the shell.

    If you decide to go with a roof top tent I don't think that the leer or ARE will support the weight of the tent and two people without some for of a support system. Consider a RSI Smart Cap which will support up to 770lbs in static weight and 330lbs while moving. Good review I do like the leer caps.

    so a drop down window can be dropped from inside the drivers cab?[not the bed side] Correct?

    • @TrentMMoore

      The set up that I have can only drop down from the bed side. They might be able to make it so you can drop it from the cab side, but I don’t think that is common because most trucks don’t have a window that can fully roll down.

      Just bought one here in Calif. and I was told from the retailer that each windooor was $150- ea. the removable slider was $150, the Thule system was $469- and the regular slider was $90. I paid $2100 for the shell and all the ''ad-ons'' were $2887 w/tax install. Kind of a rip off but if you plan on keeping the truck, they're nice to have. Also I have a '19 TRD Off-Road with the shorty bed and that's the costs.. hope it helps

      I used the hardware that came with each camper. The ARE had a clamp design which was nice for easy removal. The LEER shell had a bolt design that tied into the Tacoma rail. Both of them worked well for me. Unfortunately I do not have a link if I find something similar I will link it for you.

    Hi! Question. Price wise, which one was the less costly with all the options you had in your topper. I'm considering either brand for my Tacoma and wanted to know based on your experience which one was more cost effective. I'm afraid my decision will fall into the price category when it comes to my final decision. Thanks !!

    • @TrentMMoore
      @TrentMMoore  3 роки тому +4

      Honestly when you price match feature for feature they are within a couple hundred dollars of each other.
      I have 2 suggestions that helped me choose what to buy.
      1) fine a local shop that sells the shells you are trying to pick between. Seeing them in person gave me a better perspective on the style. This was one reason I ended up with LEER because the “body lines” of the shell with the features I wanted looked better to me.
      2) consider buying used. Look for a used shell with everything you think you want on it. This is what I did for my first shell. I am super glad I did because I would have lost money buying a new shell only to realize that I was going to need the windoors to really fit my needs. The other plus was that I resold it for $100 more than I bought it for.
      Obviously everyone’s situation is different so you might not be willing to buy used and deal with reselling, but if price is your determining factor used shells are the way to go.
      I hope this helps. If you have any other questions hit me up in the comments.
      Appreciate you watching!
      -Trent

    I've only owned A.R.E. so far (three, purchased in 2014, 2019, 2023) and both they and LEER seem to have great designs/features. But both the '19 and '23 have had CRAPPY workmanship, mostly with window installs. You can expect the window frames to be overtightened/crushed (as shown here) causing them to leak. If you're buying used and care about leaks, be prepared to remove windows and fix it yourself, since the warrantees do not transfer. That's what I'm researching for my '23 shell.

    My first shell was an ARE and I will never buy one again. The side windows leaked bad. The fit was off on the drivers side where the shell meet the truck bed. I bought the overland shell that had Line X down both sides and the dealer said I should send it back for warranty because of the bad masking job that they did. He sent it back and ARE said they could not repair or replace it. They offered me $400 refund to keep the shell. Needless to say I bought a Leer and would never recommend ARE.

      I need to do an update video, but yes the LEER I think has shown, at least in my case, the build quality is better and so far no issues. It does have some design oversights like when you open the back window the condensation or rain will drip into the bed but other then that it has been great.
