Hi. I think you’re mistaken, Elvis was encouraging James Burton’s mini lead break, not reprimanding a band member. From all I know, and have ever read about Elvis, he wouldn’t do such a thing on stage, but would have spoken to them later; but I heard nothing amiss, and considering this was part of the movie, Elvis: That’s the Way It Is, I doubt he would have approved it, if an error and a reprimand had taken place. But I really don’t think Elvis was doing that. A lovely day to all.

Hi Rene.We gonna agree to disagree here😂.I dont know if you are a musician. But this is perfectly normal behaviour for musicians.Especially the perfectionists. Its nothing personal and its doesnt mean Elvis is a bad person. Its just a natural thing to do when you want the best. And the way it was done, only a musician will know. The audience will have no idea. But trust me,Elvis was definitely talking to someone who made a mistake.

I am a musician and I heard nothing awry, as I mentioned, and I’ve listened to the song a thousand-probably much more 😁-times. Rene is absolutely right. Elvis was encouraging the band to play a little more intensely. He cued his musicians often this way. No anger or anything. In fact, if a musician made a mistake, he’d laugh about it. He never took himself too seriously.

Elvis's Great Great Great Grandmother on his Mother's side was Called Morning White Dove 🕊 She was Full Blood Cherokee Indian, also Elvis's Grand Parents on his Mother's side were first Cousins which Doubled his Cherokee Ancestry. So probably some of his tan came naturally. I've often thought that his Native American Heritage, was a major contributing
factor to the Exotic Beauty of his Face, with those high cheekbones.

Yes, Memphis is hot and humid in the summertime, so he had a pool. I'm old enough to remember this performance, but I don't remember there being any tanning beds back then. He also enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii and Palm Springs quite often, which are always hot. I'm going to back up to right before the "Come on, Man" comment to see if I hear anything different. :)

  • @tlbeman
    @tlbeman 2 роки тому +9

Elvis used to vacation in Hawaii to get tanned up. I think he was trying to inspire someone or the whole band when he said, “Come on man.” During the “Aloha from Hawaii” concert, at one point you see him intensely, almost seemingly angrily, look at the band to raise their intensity to his level.

All I can say, sir, is that Mr. Elvis Presley was one of the sexiest pieces of "male" there's ever been! Which reminds me - if you haven't done so, you may want to react to his song, "US Male". My working career was with a major telecommunications corporation, & one day a customer called in needing service. When I found out his name, I nearly fell over. It was Mr. J. D. Summer, of the Stamps, one of Elvis' back-up groups. I asked him to sing for me to prove it, & when he started singing one of Elvis' gospel songs, I had no doubt. No mistaking that bass! Anyway, thanks for reaching to another great Elvis song, sir! (That's "Sumner", not "Summer". Stupid spell check!)

Presley's father was of German or Scottish origin. His mother was Scotch-Irish, with some French ancestry. It is also believed that his maternal great-great-grandmother, was Cherokee. Perhaps Elvis got his beautiful color from the Cherokee Indian influence.

Good reaction Sweet Harri. Your comment about Elvis turning toward the band and saying “come on man” was probably directed at Charlie Hodge and not the band. He was a good friend of Elvis, met him in the army and lived at Graceland when Elvis was in residence there. He was part of the “Memphis mafia” group. The reason I think it was Charlie he was directing the comment to was because at another performance in Vegas Charlie also didn’t do what Elvis thought he should (singing harmony with Elvis). In the video of Elvis’ singing Bridge Over Trouble Water in 1970 in Las Vegas, when Elvis gets to the verse “Sail on silver girl” Charlie was supposed to start singing harmony with Elvis (as he does on the same song at other performances). Elvis turns and looks back to where Charlie stands. Elvis doesn’t say anything, just continues with his performance. Charlie comes in at the next line and begins singing harmony. If you haven’t reacted to the 1970 Bridge Over Troubled Water performance, please do, You won’t be sorry.
I personally feel for Charlie on the “Bridge” song. If he came in too early or too late it would have been VERY noticeable and the beauty of this great performance by Elvis would have been affected (but not because of Elvis). Charlie had multiple jobs at an Elvis concert. Not only singing harmony, but also making sure Elvis always had water/juice available, had a scarf handy when Elvis needed another one to give to the audience, giving Elvis a guitar when he requested one, and singing and playing his own guitar. He had to juggle many tasks often at the same time.
Thank you for honoring Elvis with your videos.

You are correct...it does sound like Love Letters. Also a beautiful song and well sung. This song here is a very difficult one to sing....the breathing required and how he holds it is amazing. I just checked and no, they are different writers for both songs. However, it could be the arrangement as well that make both songs sound so alike.

Harry, "Love Letters" is a 1945 popular song with lyrics by Edward Heyman and music by Victor Young. The song appeared, without lyrics, in the movie of the same name performed by Dick Haymes, and was nominated for the Academy Award for best song in 1945. The song has been covered by a number of artists, most notably by Ketty Lester (1961), Elvis Presley (1961), and Alison Moyet (1987).
"Just Pretend" was composed by Guy Fletcher in partnership with his writing partner Doug Flett. Elvis Presley recorded it on June 6, 1970 as part of his July 4-8 studio sessions for RCA in Nashsville, Tennessee. The song was first released on Presley's album that appeared on November 11, 1970.

I think your well becoming a musicologist Harri..Superb observations...Funny talking about Elvis' tan. I was in Elvis' house in 1983 and he had no tanning bed. But, Memphis summers are long, hot and muggy. Average June-Sept about 32C. So it is easy to tan quick. Elvis used a tanning bronzer cream (common in 70's -80's) to enhance the darkness of the tan. Also , he did expect perfection from his bands and you picked up on that quickly..Thanks Harri.

As a musician I love how you noticed that he was calling out somebody. And if you look at I can't remember if it's suspicious minds or Polk Salad Annie but he confuses Things by One Beat coming out of a huge performance part to go back into a beat and his band like get some back on track but I mean it's a very lightning quick adjustment and he was off by just a tiny bit and the first thing you see him do is lean over to them and go, you're right man you're right. And then he immediately adjust. So he can give it and take it. Anyway man I know you've been focusing mostly on live video of him but man check out some of this early audio. To me this is absolutely stellar still got that same walk and stand up bass by the way so it's not too later in time.

a ROUSING version of "Can't Stop Lovin' You" 1972 Hampton Roads -- at the very start of the following video - ua-cam.com/video/LNtP5Gd8QGE/v-deo.html - Elvis calls out “Please Release Me” but the band begins playing “I Can’t Stop Loving You” - Elvis didn’t stop them & didn’t say a word, he just eased right into the song; a few seconds later he glances over w-a look of irritation; he then slowly walks over to Charlie Hodge, picks up his glass of water & throws it at Glen @ piano; some other versions didn't record that beginning & it makes a difference - without that you can’t really appreciate what took place. Did anyone answer this? "Just Pretend" composed by Guy Fletcher in partnership with his writing partner Doug Flett & "Love Letters" lyrics by Edward Heyman and music by Victor Young.

SIR: My first time making a comment plus also subscribing to your Channel. Maybe sometimes ELVIS'S skin appeared whiter or darker I think the amount of "melanin" which the skin contains is the determination. ELVIS inherited Naitive American blood from his Mother's side of the family. Speaking for myself, I'm Naitive American; or American Indian, or like my neighbors to the Great North CANADA say: "First People". My skin tone is pretty light-colored until I am outside in the hot sun, and I darken pretty quickly. All my older brothers, on the other hand, had really dark hair along with a "permanent dark Coppertone tan" ! THANK YOU!

He also had Cherokee ancestors on the Presley (his father) side of the family. His paternal grandfather Jesse Dunnan was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. JD was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree.

He was a natural blond, so you would think he would be lighter-complected.
This was a great performance , how could it not, it's Elvis!

He was only blond until his mid teens, then his hair got progressively darker (as happens with many that are born with light hair) and by the time he was in the army and did not dye his hair, Charlie Hodge said Elvis' natural hair color (as an adult) was chestnut brown.

@@dawsonp3314 When in high school, yes, but the closer he got to the end of his teens, the darker his hair became. Of course he never had naturally black hair (in fact, almost nobody does), but he most certainly was not blond in his adult years as many Elvis fans still mistakenly claim. I once had a discussion with a very fanatic Elvis fan on Facebook that happened under a photo of Elvis that showed him, in his thirties, with open jumpsuit almost to his belly button, revealing dark chesthair (not much, but clearly visible). This fanatic fan claimed that Elvis was (still) a blond and did not only dye the hair on his head but, get this, all his body hair. Now think about that for a minute. Have you ever dyed the hair on your head? That's messy enough. But ALL your body hair? Just saying.

I agree, Elvis’ “C’mon man” was directed at Charlie Hodge. For some reason, Elvis felt exposed when there were no other voices to support him. He relied on Charlie for coming in to harmonise on agreed lines in a song and Elvis often got a little exasperated when Charlie’s voice didn’t come in. And other times you see Elvis nod or turn his head towards Charlie to show his appreciation for coming in at his designated spot. The band was so tight because that is what Elvis expected …. 110% effort from everyone on that stage. He felt people in the audience had paid their hard earned money to come to the show and they deserved the very best show everyone could deliver.

but then at both times, if Elvis showed his 'anger' if this is true, then he did it at perfect timing where it can be interpreted as acting in the song. By saying "C'mon man" he could be reffereing to all man that are far away from their loved woman and following by "until then we'll just pretend". And the ending looked like he was acting and conducting background musicians and finishing the song most gorgeous way. Not angry at all. Loved it :)

I noticed once when Elvis announced the song he was about to sing. The piano player starts off with a different song. The first couple of notes were very similar to what Elvis had intended to sing but he (noticed the difference) and had to change to what the piano was playing.
He had an angry look and threw a glass of water on the piano player.
This is a testament to Elvis' knowledge of music.
