Early In The Spring

A sailor often went to sea with the promise of true love waiting for his return after he’d finished serving his country. In this story the sailor sings a lament when he comes home to find his sweetheart married to a rich man. The distinctive style of this suggests an interesting blend of cultures, originally an English fo’c’sle song, it somehow got distilled in the Appalachian Mountains to become a “love ballad.”
