Billy Boy
Переглядів 9332 роки тому
The terms “Hillbilly” and “Red Neck” both originated during the Battle of the Boyne. England’s Dutch born King William III was known to his Protestant Irish followers as “Billy Boy” and his followers were called “Hill billys” and “Red Necks.” There’s a bit of irony in the last verse where Billy Boy is asked about the age of his fiancée. He states that she is “Three times six and four times seve...
James Alley Blues
Переглядів 5752 роки тому
The James Alley Blues is song number 61 in the Harry Smith Anthology. It was originally recorded by Richard (Rabbit) Brown in New Orleans, LA, on March 5, 1927. Brown was one of the first musicians to learn the twelve bar blues pattern, and was one of the most important New Orleans folk singers to record. He was famous for his dramatic guitar playing, which was similar in style to that of blues...
Early In The Spring

A sailor often went to sea with the promise of true love waiting for his return after he’d finished serving his country. In this story the sailor sings a lament when he comes home to find his sweetheart married to a rich man. The distinctive style of this suggests an interesting blend of cultures, originally an English fo’c’sle song, it somehow got distilled in the Appalachian Mountains to beco...

Ezeikel Saw A Wheel
Переглядів 3182 роки тому
This is a spiritual I learned many years ago at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. It refers to a part of the Old Testament where Ezekiel sees a vision of concentric wheels floating in space. They have many properties attributed to flying saucers. It makes one wonder whether people who claim to see flying saucers are seeing into a spiritual dimension. There are many mysteries. I have...
The Colorado Trail

A cowboy love song. All sources point to a cowboy from Duluth, MN whose name is unknown. He was brought to the hospital after being thrown and trampled by what he called ‘a terribly bad hoss.’ A surgeon, Dr. T.L. Chapman, treated the wrangler for ‘bones of both upper and lower legs broken, fractures of the collar bone on both sides, numerous fractures of both arms and wrists, and many scars fro...
Stewball
Переглядів 2392 роки тому
This is the original text of Stewball from an early printed version that appeared in an American song book dated 1829. Sometime around 1790 a race took place on the curragh of Kildare (near Dublin) between a skewbald horse owned by Sir Arthur Marvel and 'Miss Portly', a gray mare owned by Sir Ralph Gore. The race seemed to take the balladmakers' fancies, and must have been widely sung.
Oh Freedom
Переглядів 5612 роки тому
This is a great old spiritual. I recorded it during a thunder storm in Florida and decided to leave the thunder on the track to give it more ambiance. Freedom is often taken for granted but is sorely missed when it's gone. Thanks to lifepalette.com/ for the Freedom image.

Follow The Drinking Gourd
Переглядів 2,3 тис.2 роки тому
The old man in this chorus was Peg Leg Joe, a sailor-turned-carpenter who had lost part of his right leg in an accident at sea. Joe wintered in the South doing odd jobs, from plantation to plantation. When he wasn’t working he taught the slaves this song containing a secret escape route to freedom in the North. The Drinking Gourd is not a gourd, but the Big Dipper with its two pointer stars (Du...

Ralph is a complete dick here- like a teacher trying to stump a student, he tries to initially quiz Roger on the Bible, then tries to play his hostility off to Roger as having been a DJ back in ‘68 with “not having any Byrds records” to spin, but if that were true, why would he then press Roger on “Truck Store Truck Driving Man,” and the Grand Old Opry performance reaction? He knows EXACTLY what he’s doing despite playing dumb…he wasn’t dumb, just an asshole.

Everyone's talking about Roger. I just wanted to say something about Vern Gosdin. I'm not sure what he was doing on the show here, but there's a Byrds connection. After singer Gene Clark left the band in 1966, he recorded a solo album that included Vern and his brother Rex on vocals. It was released in 1967 as "Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers." I have a copy , but I don't think I've listened to it since back then, so I don't remember it at all. But it's another bit of evidence that The Byrds' interest in country was deeply felt and sincere. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Clark_with_the_Gosdin_Brothers

Everytime Roger sings that song he makes 100, 000 bucks or more. Which means he's a Billionaire many times over since he's sang that song a million times and it still sounds perfect.

Roger, it would be brilliant if you can get mike campbell, benmont tench and stan lynch (maybe chris Hillman too?) to back you up/collaborate on another solo album. You guys write and sound great together and it would fill a void for the byrds fans (especially after Crosby's passing) and Tom's passing for tp&hbs fans. You all make absolute magic together, and it would bridge the best of both legendary bands! We want to hear a folky , psychedelic masterpiece from you again!
