Frieren is now the #1 anime of ALL TIME. Here's why I think it was able to make it's way up there and why you should watch it if you're a fan of any fantasy.
As manga reader, it is funny to see anime-only viewers expect epic fight scene after episode 9. And then the episode is like that. But nobody complained 🤣
@@SingulxRyty Yeah, what would happen has been foreshadowed well even before the episode. The noble talking about how Aura's power works, the demon fighting Fern telling her how dirty she is for hiding her mana, etc.
Probably is the best manga-to-anime adaptation that I have ever seen. Only time they add, is when animation and music are a ++good like the ballroom dance scene in EP 15. Only two small panels in the manga even show them dancing, but with animation, Madhouse can show the entire dance with the music, and it's beautiful. Just makes a great story even better.
As someone later in my years, this show hits home too hard at times. What I remember being a few months ago was years, and people and places are so different, if even still present. The things I took for granted then are precious memories now. Reaching for them to recreate and relive those feelings is an act in futility and only creates frustration and sadness. I couldn't imagine living for thousands of years and having similar situations intensified by orders of magnitude.
This exactly captures my thoughts. On top of that, my brother in law passed away suddenly a few weeks ago and I wasn't sure if I'd make it through new episodes after that. Frieren just does too good a job of evoking emotions and memories.
The slower pace is probably a genius way to do a anime. Frienen can actually hold a scene together instead of coming apart at the seams like other anime. It feels artful and alive even if most characters are stoic and reserve, something I find genuinely engaging and invest in.
Honestly, Frieren is so good. I honestly just want to watch her adventers every week. I don't care of there is a bigger story its just fun and a great fantasy story.
My big surprise is just how long Heiter the priest lived. He was over 20 when he met Frieren, then adventured with her until he was over 30, Then he meets Frieren 50 yrs later at Himmel's funeral as a senior priest in his church. He's over 80 at that point. Fern and Frieren leave to adventure 25-29 years later at Heiter's death. That would make him at least 105 yrs old at the time of his death, and over 101 yrs old when he became bedridden. It's why he told her "the fact I've stayed on my feet this long is a minor miracle"
I think the genius of this anime is how the pacing of the anime is basically a POV of Frieren. The first episode went by in a flash even though 50 years went by, is just how frieren see that 50 years being, an instant. But after she realized the importance of time and the memories made, it starts being slow and memorable for her. I know the time skip is also for the sake of plot and also to cover any more backstory plothole in the future, but the thought that the anime pace fits perfectly well is mindblowing to me. Edit: Also explains why we never seen middle aged Himmel because Frieren only ever saw him when he was young and as an elderly
Nah, actually, that timeskip is way more important than just simply "sake of plot." Usually, long timeskips are used in a very floppy manner, but in Freiren it feels almost necessary. The impact isn't as strong without having this POV so close to Freiren's sense of time.
The time skips are actually the same in the manga and I myself have believed its to symbolize how little at first Frieren cares about time. The one for one adaptation is pretty spot on imo as I don't have a single negative thing to say when it comes to that dept 10/10 anime
The time skip is insanely important. The whole point of frieren is what happens with characters after they achieved their ultimate goal. We’ve seen plenty of animes where the hero party defeated the demon king and then the animed ends but never what happens after with the party. This animes shows the sequel of all hero party - demon lord animes. It’s insanely thought
@@NickN56 I wouldn't say its completely original, as there are many mangas like this where the protag used to be in the hero party, and is now retired. So it's not really "well thought", but how they used the pacing as the protagonist's POV is what makes it special.
This anime encouraged me to call my parents. As it showed me that time can get away from any of us and I may not get another chance to if I didn't there and then. It also taught me to never ever trust an elf's perception of time. Especially Frieren, the nigh immortal elf.
I believe it’s number 1 on MAL for a reason, this anime deeply resonates with a lot of people in ways other generic anime doesn’t do, makes you think of the limited time we have as we age and the relationships we take for granted.
I think the rather stoic frieren fits perfectly. Its even a positive for me. You can really feel how she sees everything with her perspective of time and a thousand years of experience. Almost nothing must feeling new or exciting and it highlights the moment where she actually shows emotions. Another one are the fights. These weirdly also feel like seen through the perspective of frieren. They are exciting while going on but end pretty quickly and this immediately go on as if it wasn't a big deal in the big scheme of this (like the big scheme of 1000+ years)
The fights Frieren is involved in are over quickly because she is OP. Like the bored way she tells the one demon that she is stronger than his master, and casually destroys him. Or how she fights the dead army of the one demon, then pops her "surprise' on the demon. She didn't even bother watching that one die.

She’s been fighting demons and monsters off and on for around 1000 years Even the best demons seem like rookies to her, especially after she helped kill the demon lord, likely one of the strongest ones out there At the risk of sounding shallow, it’s like how a chess master can counter any strategy, even the optimal ones, because he/she has seen and played them all hundreds or thousands of times
I like that Frieren really shows you what its like to live in a fantasy world. In almost all fantasy stories, the fantasy setting exists solely for the purpose of the fight scenes. In frieren, the setting IS the focus.
They also put so much love into designing the fantasy creatures in this world unlike in other anime's, where they just draw a bigger dog with red eyes.
I think Frieren for me is probably one of the best paced anime. Every episode is enjoyable. Does feel rushed yet doesn’t feel dragged out. Gotta praise the writer for this. Animation for this anime is also top notched, not just the fight but the dance as well. Damn!
Love it, it is a pleasure to watch it every week. The interaction between characters are awesome. I watch anime since years but this anime is special. I love it and i don't even know why exactly
exactly my feeling. The show simultaneously feels fast and slow but in a good way. Scenes are played out long enough for us to enjoy them, but doesn't linger to the point where it feels like nothing is progressing
Frieren is a really amazing anime that’s about self-discovery. Its episodic nature is very fitting for the kind of story it portrays. I love how Frieren goes back to the same places she first visited 10 years ago with a different mindset. Even the world-building is amazing; it does not feel robotic and is not there solely for the sake of aesthetics. The world moves on even without the main characters, and I think many anime could learn from this. I also love how similar Frieren and Violet Evergarden are; both series are about self-discovery and what certain emotions mean, exploring what it truly means to be human. Even the action and music are amazing! The music composer is also the same for Violet Evergarden, which made me extraordinarily happy. It’s a 10/10 anime and deserves all the attention it has gotten so far.
Not only the composer. They also got one of former Kyoani animator on board. So sometimes it felt like Violet Evergarden. But they also got someone from Ghibli. If you get Ghibli vibes, that's why. And sometimes there are moments that reminiscent of Bocchi the Rock. The director and some key animators for BtR also involved. Action scenes are done by some legendary names from anime industry.
Frieren definitely is the no.1 anime. I've never seen an anime that just hit all of the spot perfectly. Adaptation, the themes covered in the story, world building, character developments, and banger OP. It's literally perfect. It focuses exactly where it needs to be and shows it. The thing is, violet evergarden was good, but i think the concept can be a bit harder to grasp or relate to unlike frieren where it gets as basic as fantasy stories can be. At least for me, thats how it is. Frieren is easier to digest for me due to its simplicity. Everything just hits deeply. Imo Frieren hits like a truck especially for those who are adulting or maybe felt like they just ended a certain journey. Its painful, but there is nothing you can do other than trying to be better. Its full of regrets, but time continues. It explains time perfectly. A lot of us may relate to certain characters due to their own history. We live at the same time, we have certain life span as the human species but, each one of us have different concepts of time. I personally relate a lot to Frieren. I live on auto pilot. By the time certain thing ended, I hadnt realize how much it has actually affected me until I lost it. Frieren encourage us to live and appreciate things in the moment. Because a lot of us lives in the past/future, we often forget to enjoy the tiny bit of the present. Even though the present is all we have and that one tiny action in the present could be something huge to us in the future. We just didnt realize/know it yet since we are too busy not living in the moment. Thats the beauty and genius of Frieren.
what do you mean a banger OP. the OP is just generic jpop anisong you can find anywhere else. it's honestly a disgrace to the anime. that's why they are going to replace it with yorushika. the Ending song in other hand.... is the culmination of frieren regrets towards time.
I love how frieren explores one of the most intriguing concepts in the journey of a traditional anime being after the conclusion of the main story. Alot of anime that do end up coming to a conclusion do so normally with the protagonist simply going along their merry way towards whatever future goals that are vaguely given to us. Few anime explore what occurs afterward but recently there have been more exploring this theme. We know that some day our protagonist will die eventually and all heroic stories have an end but the majority of anime rolls the credits long before we get to see that conclusion so with frieren exploring not only that end but what comes after is such an appealing concept to me.
Mono no aware, or the transience of things, is a pretty common theme in japanese stories and therfore anime. More often then not, the cliché thing doesn't even exist anymore, or came from videogames of the mid 80s.
This anime hit hard enough that it made me reach out to a friend I have not talked to for a bit. I am not sure A younger me would have been affected as much by it. It does a great job at showing the march of time how it can just pass someone by.
The reason I personally love watching this anime is because there are no cliffhanger (just one till now). Every episode has a beginning and end in the same episode. I don't feel empty after finishing each episode, I can just close my laptop and move on with my own life till next week.
Sousou no Frieren is just a masterpiece. The pacing, the story telling, the animation and the music just blends together perfectly. Every episode i felt so immersed and when the episode ends it makes you crave for another episode immediately or you will question has 24 mins gone by already. The characters are well written and likeable. Each has their own unique background and personality traits. Everyone has their own story and time actually matter or passes in this anime. Things grow and age as time passes which makes you cherish the characters even more as they will eventually die and perish.
One thing that I love about how Frieren portrays the passage of time is that we see the characters grow more familiar with each other in the space between episodes. You really get the sense that Fern deeply understands Frieren after years together, and within two episodes of Stark joining their little party there is already a bond that can be read between the characters. Even a side character who was only in the show for one episode ends up forging strong bonds with the main heroes, since we see the months they spend together in a montage. Frieren herself shows this the least, which fits with the weaknesses she needs to overcome.
Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song & The Ancient Magus' Bride are similar to Frieren: Beyond Journey's End too, with the stoic female protagonist on a journey of self-discovery. It helps that all the protagonists - Frieren & Vivy & Chise - have the same voice actress as well.
I love all those 3 anime you mentioned..and yeah I just realized that Vivy, Chise and Frieren have the same voice actress...that's why Frieren reminded me of Tender Moon Tempo.
Chise and stoic!? Her defining characteristic is listening to her emotions before thinking and rushing head first into trouble. She has gotten better at controlling that urge, but she'll (hopefully) never be as detached as Frieren.
This show is such a nice change of pace compared to other stuff I'm watching. From Spy X Family to the high octane JJK, I get so mentally exhausted sometimes trying to keep up and feel burnt out after wanting to see more and more of them (I love both shows) but sometimes it's nice to get something like this that's in between. Something I can sit back and like you said, to just enjoy that slow candle burn. Some shows are like a flamethrower or a volcano in that aspect but this... This show is like a comfortable cozy night, regardless of the weather outside. Sometimes I really need that in between all the comedic, dramatic and chaotic stuff I've been watching lately. I'm not going to sit here and say it's my favorite thing to eat but it is more of a comfort food for me. Feels like a home cooked meal, rather than decent fast food, a five star restaurant or junk food. I can just sit right on back and enjoy it, simple as that.
To me this is a real gem. A beautiful anime with multiple threads of existential themes. Knowing in the episode 16 what really Kraft the elven monk was, his forgotten role in saving the world in a previous era, his stoic ability to getting along being forgotten and find other goals in life, was just a revelation. It left me with a mixture of awe and nostalgy, just wanted to see him again and make him tell his story and the name of his companion. But, as he said, maybe next time, in two or three hundred years.
When I first read Frieren's manga it immediately turned no. 1 for me. It actually reaffirmed me into wanting to get into journaling. Time is merciless.
I have surprised myself by enjoying this character driven day in the life type anime but they just do it so well. Seeing Frieren slowly come to terms about how special both of these adventures and her friends have become in her incredibly long life is very heart warming. It adds a level of emotion that is mostly missing in the soulless isekai churning mill that is our modern anime scene.

What I really love with Frieren's adaptation is it somehow makes "boring" enjoyable. The pacing of the story is rather slow that it gets boring at times, but you just can't stop watching it. And the best part about it, none of the episodes feels like a "filler". There is always one scene in the new episode that can be the highlight of that whole week. And well, I'd even argue that the anime is a better experience than reading the manga. The choice of BGM in several scenes are so perfect that it adds depth and beauty to the scene. Every BGM is always on point with what we're watching, unlike most other animes that just puts a random BGM or doesn't even try at all.
Absolute #1. I enjoy every single episode. Every Friday there is a translation, and every Saturday morning I spend drinking a cup of coffee with Frieren.
Episode ONE THAT WAS THE MOST AMAZING EPISODE. it was strong till he meets Helmet KID and his death, but after, it really falls off, like off a freakin CLIFF BAD. BUT BUT THat first episode, very hard hitting, if you know what I mean, don't want to spoil the first episode for anyone.
You are such a good story teller man. Your voice and speaking pace is so soothing and nice to listen to, even while explaining such a deep and emotional story.
Ive been reading manga/watching anime for years, and this is the FIRST series Ive seen that actually elevates the manga material. Its amazing. The director blew it out of the park.
I have absolutely been loving this series,there's such a pleasantly nostalgic sort of vibe about it. It's a feels anime where things are flowing and devoloping in a way that just makes me wish I could experience something like it. Other anime that made me feel rather emotional and/or pleasant Slime Isekai s1 and Ranking of Kings s1.
I don't think they are emotionless, well the demons are, but I think that at least Frieren and Fern are still learning to express their emotions. I think the emotionless nature of some characters amplifies the moments where they do show emotion. Stark is over emotional and that is just hilarious given how little emotion the others show. But each of the main characters have these completely opposite and hidden personalities that are always there just below the surface that come out at just the right times. Idk, I just think the emotionless parts makes you believe the parts where they do show emotion a lot more. I mean, who thought that the Demons could be so emotionless and then in the end they feel fear? Makes you wonder if they were hiding real emotions the entire time just because they are Demons and are supposed to act like Demons do.
I was waiting for it to be finished to binge it, but you hit me hard at Violet Evergarden. It's my favorite anime because i consider it not only a masterpiece but a work of art. I'm going to start frieren soon, so as always, thank you for everything you do!

Would 100% be down for more Frieren videos. Frieren got me so invested in the world and the characters so far. World building has been great and Its definitely my most anticipated each week now.
Frieren is the perfect protagonist for me. She turns out to be the last great legendary mage, limitlessly powerful it seems. Yet, her character is extremely humble, kind, carefree, soft, mellow, patient, unattached, stoic. She doesn't seem to have an ego and she has a strong sloppy side. Happy to fill her endless days with mundane tasks. It's largely how Taoist and Zen masters are often described
I always wondered when I would play MMO's and such, about the lives of the NPCs and the aftermath of the adventures you would undertake, good or bad, and how it would effect the world as a whole so this hits me hard and I love that they made this anime. Plus, I came to an understanding along time ago that immortality, while a blessing is also a curse. You live forever and watch the the changes of the world and its inhabitants, but yet, you have to understand you get to watch those you love, grow up, grow old, wither, and die while you never change. This goes for anyone that's not immortal that you form a relationship with. I think this is a lot of why Frieren seems to have such a closed and somewhat cold demeanor and why she didn't want to have fern with her, but that's my assumption. Anyway, this is a great anime, no doubt.
as a guy who doesn't care for animeisms and thus has passed on most anime. Frieren is a wonderfully restrained, excellently written character driven fantasy. Loveable characters, interesting world, beautiful art, great sound track, and character writing that is satisfying. In short its one of the best stories ive had the pleasure of seeing in almost 10 years. edit: i like how the stoicism (restraint) that "all" the characters show compared to the flamboyant emotions of most characters in anime is a point of complaint. its refreshing to me, and i think there are plenty of animated characters, in this to not actually be able to say they are all stoic.
Ignored it for so long and then after seeing clips I decided to watch it and boy am I glad. The wholesomeness hits me in the feels then the action comes and im blown away, the characters all stay in my head even side characters and himmel wasn't really show non stop but he's the goat. 10/10 anime.
This anime was a true 💎 in the rough. I love this anime and can watch this anime every week forever. From their story, anime, 🌎 building, humor, etc.. I hope we get many many many seasons of this anime.
I love this anime almost as much as love Violet and it's saying something, I guess. The pace can be felt so slow, but as someone that usually watch drama or anime in 2x speed, normal speed of Frieren doesn't bore me at all. It's beautifully made.
It's always nice to hear your summaries. They are so nice to listen to and the audio quality is top. I really need to know the name of the music that plays in the background at the very beginning
I wasn't expecting too much from Frieren at the beginning of the season, which made it a huge surprise when I ended up loving it as much as I do. It definitely deserves the praise it's gotten! Bare in mind, fans of FMAB are well known for sabotaging the review scores of other anime to prevent Full metal from being dethroned, so that alone makes this an even bigger deal for Frierenn. In terms of its pacing, I actually love the slower take it has compared to other action packed fantasy. I get my fill of action from Eminence in Shadow and Mushoku tensei as it is, and it makes the scenes that do have action in the show even more meaningful by contrast. The fights feel earned. These aren't adventurers that are trolling around looking a scrap around every corner, they're people with their own goals. With how much I've enjoyed this series, it doesn't shock me to learn they've been so near flawlessly faithful to the original material. The only downside is There won't be Cut content episode from you :/ Still glad to hear you talk about it! Can't wait for the next video
Sousou no Frieren has been a perfect Adaptation of its Manga Counterpart, & the fact this an Anime will make think about Life has a Deep Tone to it. 💁🏿♂️🧝🏻♀️
ive always been into action animes/manga like dragon ball, naruto, jujutsu kaisen etc, but this anime is just amazing, perfect pacing, perfect humor, the animation is beautiful the whole season, and man the emotion and characters, this is my favorite anime of all time
I love the slow pace. Feels like I'm watching a 40 min ep instead of 24. It's weird to call it slow paced though, it seems like a lot stuff is happing at the same time, so much so that I find myself checking in the time thinking the ep is almost other just to be joyfully surprised it's still half way.

The only time I watch subs is if there’s no other option. Except with Dragon Ball, even if there was no other option I guess I’d just avoid it entirely because adult Gohan and Goku’s high pitched lady voices are nails on a chalk bored.
Frieren's action scenes are so well done, and she is OP done right. Watching her interact with her new companions is great. Like finding a person sinking into a bottomless swamp, does she save him or no, because she might get dirty (even though she lifts him by magic)
I havent watched anime for awhile until this show came out, if the quality and adaption stays true it will definitely be one of my favorites next to FMA
Unlucky that eminence in shadow season 2 did not get adapted as well as frieren. Making the choices they made, I feel that they are missing the point of many scenes and fights. That said the last episode that came out was amazing. It really captured the essence of the novels imo.
That's just the classic "i'm overpowered character and bs". Frieren is another thing. For me frieren is leagues above eminence in shadow. Probably becouse i saw lots of those animes. Frieren is really special, EIS is just another power fantasy for me
EIS is just another Isekai, with the exact same tropes as Overlord, Mushoku Tensei, Shield hero,... Frieren is a real fantasy anime. So the world building and character development is way more important here. The slow pacing of the story is also specific to this kind of anime since they don't need to feed us with many pointless fight scene because there is nothing else beside that. Just check old fantasy anime like Lodoss or Scrapped Princess, they're all slow paced with amazing story and character arc.
@@JohnSmith-qb9ex eminence is not pure fantasy, it don't have fantasy feeling that much like frieren. It a world with a lost sci-fi technology and was set in industrian revolution. If we talking about pure fantasy anime then frieren and mushoku take the cake and i still think mushoku is miles better than frieren.
@@bluetenkai I never saif EIS is a fantasy anime, i said exactly the opposite. And Mushoku is an Isekai with fantasy feature, but it's an Isekai with meta thought. I hate Isekai because i think they're just copy pasta from one to another, lazy writing and boring character with no personality. And almost no lore or background because nobody care about it, everyone just wanna see some op douchebag who blast the entire universe every time they fart. So you can like Mushoku more than Frieren, good for you. But pedo mc are not my cup of tea so i stay with the elf granny.
Tbf the FMA review score is so long at the top because the fanatical fanbase. The score is artificially kept high by their bots and they have downvoted all other competitors, it is almost pathetic what they are doing.
I love watching how Seldom the characters are. the traveling is so far and places like villages is far in between. That there is rarely anything that excites the party into full on emotion. They might get happier or angrier about something but it is largely noticed by observing their face and demeanor. There is almost never a outburst of any kind coming from a character.
Frieren is thoughtful. Somber, calm and introspective. It is sweet, and melancholy, and joyful. It's not about the spells, it is about life. And it's beautiful. "I am unsure if heaven exists or not. But I believe it should. So I believe in it."
I think Frieren does deserve to be way up there, maybe even #1 and it would be because it has so many things going for it. The main interesting concept about it is that despite Frieren having travelled the world, when we join up her in the story she's actually experiencing it for the first time; and we get to experience it in the exact same way. It's similar to how our own memories work, how we gloss over events in our past the first time around; but revisiting creates a whole new and more vivid experience. Something that also stands out is their portrayal of demons is basically truer to their 'original' form of cold, logical, heartless, and sadistic; none of the whole "demon lord" trope stuff that goes on these days of them being humans with horns. Course they maintain the appearance of 'humans with horns' to great effect whenever they demonstrate their true nature to the humans around them. I can only imagine that Frieren resonates with introverts in general, because there are many people who do take things a lot slower; to be the ones watching from behind as the hot blooded person they're with goes charging in, and inevitably have to clean up the resulting mess. Course while the whole experience would be tiresome at the moment, upon reflection it would maybe be a fun memory to have.

I'm usually an action anime type of person, but I love this show. It's very comfy. The scenery, animation and soundtrack is beautiful and her going back to familiar places and reminiscing about her friends who are long gone feels relatable. It's pretty unique as far as anime goes.
What I love about Sousou no Frieren is how well it displays time to an elf. Its already been 3 years since she started traveling with Fern. But it doesnt feel like that for us - its been like 5 episodes per year at most. And I think that is so perfect, because that is likely how time feels to Frieren. Its been a mere 3 years after all. My favorite way to measure time is how tall Fern is compared to Frieren.
The show is popular because of the waifu being a bit original. It's not much better than others, it's just do the same thing more subtle with a theme at least of time, but for kids.
This anime is so well put together and does a fantastic job at pulling you into the story. I think even if this style is not your go to, it will still win you over. It sure did for me
As someone who rarely if ever likes anime - friends have been trying to convince me otherwise for literally decades, and in that time I found maybe two movies and a series or two I found good - I was pointed towards Frieren a few days ago. Yet another attempt at making me like anime. Only this one did stick, and to an extent that last happened with Ghost in the Shell. So, yes, in a way that is me saying that this is my top anime, though I never before thought about having one. I also think part of it is that it works in contrast to our accelerating daily lives; I think just enough backdrop plot to keep us watching in combination with the slow pace is a large part of the magic here. It also contrasts a lot with how many movies and series work these days, with often rapid cuts and constant rapid plot movement, which makes Frieren refreshing in comparison.
Almost reminds me of to your eternity, but it is so unique in its own right. I love the change of pace and it's nice to see a new story with a different concept that focuses on a story being told, rather than a comedic relief every 5 minutes stocked with fan service. I appreciate Frieren because it is a true work of art that had a lot of thought put into it. It's a beautiful show about living life and how different people go about it, and how people aren't just one demensional character tropes. There's so much going on in such simplicity and im so amazed with this journey i could embark on with her.
It's not only did they adapt it faithfully, they actually improved upon with drecting animation and especially choosing where to use music (which in itself is epic) and where to keep it silent. 10/10

After watching content from your channel on and off for maybe a year, I finally decided to subscribe due to the critical thought and depth of research you do in your videos. With so many channels that seem to just do basic recaps or surface level pandering, I feel like you actually provide something novel to the scene.
I devoured action anime in my early college years in early 2010s and then I slowed down my pace for I saw how most of the anime that was coming out was not so appealing. Then in my 30s finding this as a grown man was very refreshing. Got to love the show so much that I bought all the manga.
As someone who grew up on the older anime that were a great balance of story/action, and then appreciating more story based anime (Like Spice and Wolf) as well as FMAB (Because this anime is actually more story driven than action driven), it was easy for me to get into anime like Frieren and even Horimiya and My Dress Up Darling. It really just comes down to "What do i feel like really watching in this area of my life" and realizing that story based anime is where it's at for me. This also includes less raunchy isekai, ones that are actually solid story-based anime, like Mushoku Tensei (for instance). I've never read the manga/visual novel for frieren, but i'm in absolute love with the anime and easily one of my favorites.
I love this series. Not surprised its no. 1. It hits so many notes. The studio did it justice by following the manga very closely. Hope they don't change in the second season.
The show burn of this series is one of my favorite things about it. The characters feel thoughtful and the world feels alive! It's my favorite type of storytelling 😊

This show is good because of all the downtime episodes. The winter they spent in the cabin with the monk to later find out he used to be this hero a long time ago. Great storytelling!
As someone who enjoys lots of fantasy stories, and specifically in regards to playing DnD, i relate the struggles and connections that my DnD characters have made over the course of their journeys to those in Frieren and it feels like a more vibrant and visual medium to imagine my own experiences. I find it so interesting, and I really enjoy the more thematic, story-driven fantasy elements more than the cool fights

As manga reader, it is funny to see anime-only viewers expect epic fight scene after episode 9. And then the episode is like that.

Probably is the best manga-to-anime adaptation that I have ever seen. Only time they add, is when animation and music are a ++good like the ballroom dance scene in EP 15. Only two small panels in the manga even show them dancing, but with animation, Madhouse can show the entire dance with the music, and it's beautiful. Just makes a great story even better.
Stark fighting the dragon was not as short as manga, they clearly has gone up and beyond in animation
As someone later in my years, this show hits home too hard at times. What I remember being a few months ago was years, and people and places are so different, if even still present. The things I took for granted then are precious memories now. Reaching for them to recreate and relive those feelings is an act in futility and only creates frustration and sadness. I couldn't imagine living for thousands of years and having similar situations intensified by orders of magnitude.

The slower pace is probably a genius way to do a anime. Frienen can actually hold a scene together instead of coming apart at the seams like other anime. It feels artful and alive even if most characters are stoic and reserve, something I find genuinely engaging and invest in.
Honestly, Frieren is so good. I honestly just want to watch her adventers every week. I don't care of there is a bigger story its just fun and a great fantasy story.
The thing is, at this pace, the human companions will not be around forever. Which again shows how frieren must feel

My big surprise is just how long Heiter the priest lived.
He was over 20 when he met Frieren, then adventured with her until he was over 30,
Then he meets Frieren 50 yrs later at Himmel's funeral as a senior priest in his church. He's over 80 at that point.
Fern and Frieren leave to adventure 25-29 years later at Heiter's death.
That would make him at least 105 yrs old at the time of his death, and over 101 yrs old when he became bedridden.
It's why he told her "the fact I've stayed on my feet this long is a minor miracle"
I think the genius of this anime is how the pacing of the anime is basically a POV of Frieren.
The first episode went by in a flash even though 50 years went by, is just how frieren see that 50 years being, an instant. But after she realized the importance of time and the memories made, it starts being slow and memorable for her.
I know the time skip is also for the sake of plot and also to cover any more backstory plothole in the future, but the thought that the anime pace fits perfectly well is mindblowing to me.
Edit: Also explains why we never seen middle aged Himmel because Frieren only ever saw him when he was young and as an elderly
Nah, actually, that timeskip is way more important than just simply "sake of plot." Usually, long timeskips are used in a very floppy manner, but in Freiren it feels almost necessary. The impact isn't as strong without having this POV so close to Freiren's sense of time.
The time skips are actually the same in the manga and I myself have believed its to symbolize how little at first Frieren cares about time. The one for one adaptation is pretty spot on imo as I don't have a single negative thing to say when it comes to that dept 10/10 anime
The time skip is insanely important. The whole point of frieren is what happens with characters after they achieved their ultimate goal. We’ve seen plenty of animes where the hero party defeated the demon king and then the animed ends but never what happens after with the party. This animes shows the sequel of all hero party - demon lord animes. It’s insanely thought
@@NickN56 I wouldn't say its completely original, as there are many mangas like this where the protag used to be in the hero party, and is now retired. So it's not really "well thought", but how they used the pacing as the protagonist's POV is what makes it special.
This anime encouraged me to call my parents. As it showed me that time can get away from any of us and I may not get another chance to if I didn't there and then.
It also taught me to never ever trust an elf's perception of time. Especially Frieren, the nigh immortal elf.

I believe it’s number 1 on MAL for a reason, this anime deeply resonates with a lot of people in ways other generic anime doesn’t do, makes you think of the limited time we have as we age and the relationships we take for granted.
I think the rather stoic frieren fits perfectly. Its even a positive for me. You can really feel how she sees everything with her perspective of time and a thousand years of experience. Almost nothing must feeling new or exciting and it highlights the moment where she actually shows emotions.
Another one are the fights. These weirdly also feel like seen through the perspective of frieren. They are exciting while going on but end pretty quickly and this immediately go on as if it wasn't a big deal in the big scheme of this (like the big scheme of 1000+ years)
The fights Frieren is involved in are over quickly because she is OP. Like the bored way she tells the one demon that she is stronger than his master, and casually destroys him. Or how she fights the dead army of the one demon, then pops her "surprise' on the demon. She didn't even bother watching that one die.

Even the best demons seem like rookies to her, especially after she helped kill the demon lord, likely one of the strongest ones out there
At the risk of sounding shallow, it’s like how a chess master can counter any strategy, even the optimal ones, because he/she has seen and played them all hundreds or thousands of times
I like that Frieren really shows you what its like to live in a fantasy world. In almost all fantasy stories, the fantasy setting exists solely for the purpose of the fight scenes. In frieren, the setting IS the focus.

Frieren is a really amazing anime that’s about self-discovery. Its episodic nature is very fitting for the kind of story it portrays. I love how Frieren goes back to the same places she first visited 10 years ago with a different mindset.
Even the world-building is amazing; it does not feel robotic and is not there solely for the sake of aesthetics. The world moves on even without the main characters, and I think many anime could learn from this.
I also love how similar Frieren and Violet Evergarden are; both series are about self-discovery and what certain emotions mean, exploring what it truly means to be human.
Even the action and music are amazing! The music composer is also the same for Violet Evergarden, which made me extraordinarily happy.
It’s a 10/10 anime and deserves all the attention it has gotten so far.
Actually she goes back 80 years later, 10 years of adventure + 50 years to see the meteors a second time, + 29 years since the death of Himmel.
Not only the composer. They also got one of former Kyoani animator on board. So sometimes it felt like Violet Evergarden.
But they also got someone from Ghibli. If you get Ghibli vibes, that's why.
And sometimes there are moments that reminiscent of Bocchi the Rock. The director and some key animators for BtR also involved.
Action scenes are done by some legendary names from anime industry.
Story is solid 10/10.

Frieren definitely is the no.1 anime. I've never seen an anime that just hit all of the spot perfectly. Adaptation, the themes covered in the story, world building, character developments, and banger OP. It's literally perfect. It focuses exactly where it needs to be and shows it.
The thing is, violet evergarden was good, but i think the concept can be a bit harder to grasp or relate to unlike frieren where it gets as basic as fantasy stories can be. At least for me, thats how it is. Frieren is easier to digest for me due to its simplicity. Everything just hits deeply.
Imo Frieren hits like a truck especially for those who are adulting or maybe felt like they just ended a certain journey. Its painful, but there is nothing you can do other than trying to be better. Its full of regrets, but time continues. It explains time perfectly. A lot of us may relate to certain characters due to their own history. We live at the same time, we have certain life span as the human species but, each one of us have different concepts of time. I personally relate a lot to Frieren. I live on auto pilot. By the time certain thing ended, I hadnt realize how much it has actually affected me until I lost it.
Frieren encourage us to live and appreciate things in the moment. Because a lot of us lives in the past/future, we often forget to enjoy the tiny bit of the present. Even though the present is all we have and that one tiny action in the present could be something huge to us in the future. We just didnt realize/know it yet since we are too busy not living in the moment. Thats the beauty and genius of Frieren.

I love how frieren explores one of the most intriguing concepts in the journey of a traditional anime being after the conclusion of the main story. Alot of anime that do end up coming to a conclusion do so normally with the protagonist simply going along their merry way towards whatever future goals that are vaguely given to us. Few anime explore what occurs afterward but recently there have been more exploring this theme. We know that some day our protagonist will die eventually and all heroic stories have an end but the majority of anime rolls the credits long before we get to see that conclusion so with frieren exploring not only that end but what comes after is such an appealing concept to me.

More often then not, the cliché thing doesn't even exist anymore, or came from videogames of the mid 80s.
The mark of a good story is reaching the end and wanting desperately to know "and then what happened?"

The reason I personally love watching this anime is because there are no cliffhanger (just one till now). Every episode has a beginning and end in the same episode. I don't feel empty after finishing each episode, I can just close my laptop and move on with my own life till next week.

Sousou no Frieren is just a masterpiece. The pacing, the story telling, the animation and the music just blends together perfectly.
Every episode i felt so immersed and when the episode ends it makes you crave for another episode immediately or you will question has 24 mins gone by already.
The characters are well written and likeable. Each has their own unique background and personality traits. Everyone has their own story and time actually matter or passes in this anime. Things grow and age as time passes which makes you cherish the characters even more as they will eventually die and perish.
One thing that I love about how Frieren portrays the passage of time is that we see the characters grow more familiar with each other in the space between episodes. You really get the sense that Fern deeply understands Frieren after years together, and within two episodes of Stark joining their little party there is already a bond that can be read between the characters. Even a side character who was only in the show for one episode ends up forging strong bonds with the main heroes, since we see the months they spend together in a montage.
Frieren herself shows this the least, which fits with the weaknesses she needs to overcome.
This anime will go down as one with the most beautiful storytelling, art and background art, lore, unique characters and amazing adaptations ever.
Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song & The Ancient Magus' Bride are similar to Frieren: Beyond Journey's End too, with the stoic female protagonist on a journey of self-discovery.
It helps that all the protagonists - Frieren & Vivy & Chise - have the same voice actress as well.
I love all those 3 anime you mentioned..and yeah I just realized that Vivy, Chise and Frieren have the same voice actress...that's why Frieren reminded me of Tender Moon Tempo.

She has gotten better at controlling that urge, but she'll (hopefully) never be as detached as Frieren.

This show is such a nice change of pace compared to other stuff I'm watching. From Spy X Family to the high octane JJK, I get so mentally exhausted sometimes trying to keep up and feel burnt out after wanting to see more and more of them (I love both shows) but sometimes it's nice to get something like this that's in between. Something I can sit back and like you said, to just enjoy that slow candle burn. Some shows are like a flamethrower or a volcano in that aspect but this... This show is like a comfortable cozy night, regardless of the weather outside. Sometimes I really need that in between all the comedic, dramatic and chaotic stuff I've been watching lately. I'm not going to sit here and say it's my favorite thing to eat but it is more of a comfort food for me. Feels like a home cooked meal, rather than decent fast food, a five star restaurant or junk food. I can just sit right on back and enjoy it, simple as that.
To me this is a real gem. A beautiful anime with multiple threads of existential themes.
Knowing in the episode 16 what really Kraft the elven monk was, his forgotten role in saving the world in a previous era, his stoic ability to getting along being forgotten and find other goals in life, was just a revelation. It left me with a mixture of awe and nostalgy, just wanted to see him again and make him tell his story and the name of his companion. But, as he said, maybe next time, in two or three hundred years.
When I first read Frieren's manga it immediately turned no. 1 for me. It actually reaffirmed me into wanting to get into journaling. Time is merciless.
I have surprised myself by enjoying this character driven day in the life type anime but they just do it so well.
Seeing Frieren slowly come to terms about how special both of these adventures and her friends have become in her incredibly long life is very heart warming.
It adds a level of emotion that is mostly missing in the soulless isekai churning mill that is our modern anime scene.

What I really love with Frieren's adaptation is it somehow makes "boring" enjoyable. The pacing of the story is rather slow that it gets boring at times, but you just can't stop watching it. And the best part about it, none of the episodes feels like a "filler". There is always one scene in the new episode that can be the highlight of that whole week. And well, I'd even argue that the anime is a better experience than reading the manga. The choice of BGM in several scenes are so perfect that it adds depth and beauty to the scene. Every BGM is always on point with what we're watching, unlike most other animes that just puts a random BGM or doesn't even try at all.
Absolute #1. I enjoy every single episode. Every Friday there is a translation, and every Saturday morning I spend drinking a cup of coffee with Frieren.
Evan Call's music in the series really gives a grand magical feeling, and really brings forth a fantastical and mystical atmosphere.
To Your Eternity is also a great fantasy anime covering an immortal and long-lived person and the dilemas of being so long lived.

I have absolutely been loving this series,there's such a pleasantly nostalgic sort of vibe about it. It's a feels anime where things are flowing and devoloping in a way that just makes me wish I could experience something like it. Other anime that made me feel rather emotional and/or pleasant Slime Isekai s1 and Ranking of Kings s1.
the music and the focus and emphasis on the emotional aspect of the story is just a masterpiece for a directors perspective!
I don't think they are emotionless, well the demons are, but I think that at least Frieren and Fern are still learning to express their emotions. I think the emotionless nature of some characters amplifies the moments where they do show emotion. Stark is over emotional and that is just hilarious given how little emotion the others show. But each of the main characters have these completely opposite and hidden personalities that are always there just below the surface that come out at just the right times. Idk, I just think the emotionless parts makes you believe the parts where they do show emotion a lot more. I mean, who thought that the Demons could be so emotionless and then in the end they feel fear? Makes you wonder if they were hiding real emotions the entire time just because they are Demons and are supposed to act like Demons do.

Would 100% be down for more Frieren videos. Frieren got me so invested in the world and the characters so far. World building has been great and Its definitely my most anticipated each week now.
Frieren is the perfect protagonist for me. She turns out to be the last great legendary mage, limitlessly powerful it seems. Yet, her character is extremely humble, kind, carefree, soft, mellow, patient, unattached, stoic. She doesn't seem to have an ego and she has a strong sloppy side. Happy to fill her endless days with mundane tasks. It's largely how Taoist and Zen masters are often described

I always wondered when I would play MMO's and such, about the lives of the NPCs and the aftermath of the adventures you would undertake, good or bad, and how it would effect the world as a whole so this hits me hard and I love that they made this anime. Plus, I came to an understanding along time ago that immortality, while a blessing is also a curse. You live forever and watch the the changes of the world and its inhabitants, but yet, you have to understand you get to watch those you love, grow up, grow old, wither, and die while you never change. This goes for anyone that's not immortal that you form a relationship with. I think this is a lot of why Frieren seems to have such a closed and somewhat cold demeanor and why she didn't want to have fern with her, but that's my assumption. Anyway, this is a great anime, no doubt.
as a guy who doesn't care for animeisms and thus has passed on most anime. Frieren is a wonderfully restrained, excellently written character driven fantasy. Loveable characters, interesting world, beautiful art, great sound track, and character writing that is satisfying. In short its one of the best stories ive had the pleasure of seeing in almost 10 years.
edit: i like how the stoicism (restraint) that "all" the characters show compared to the flamboyant emotions of most characters in anime is a point of complaint. its refreshing to me, and i think there are plenty of animated characters, in this to not actually be able to say they are all stoic.
Ignored it for so long and then after seeing clips I decided to watch it and boy am I glad. The wholesomeness hits me in the feels then the action comes and im blown away, the characters all stay in my head even side characters and himmel wasn't really show non stop but he's the goat. 10/10 anime.

I love this anime almost as much as love Violet and it's saying something, I guess. The pace can be felt so slow, but as someone that usually watch drama or anime in 2x speed, normal speed of Frieren doesn't bore me at all. It's beautifully made.

I wasn't expecting too much from Frieren at the beginning of the season, which made it a huge surprise when I ended up loving it as much as I do. It definitely deserves the praise it's gotten! Bare in mind, fans of FMAB are well known for sabotaging the review scores of other anime to prevent Full metal from being dethroned, so that alone makes this an even bigger deal for Frierenn. In terms of its pacing, I actually love the slower take it has compared to other action packed fantasy. I get my fill of action from Eminence in Shadow and Mushoku tensei as it is, and it makes the scenes that do have action in the show even more meaningful by contrast. The fights feel earned. These aren't adventurers that are trolling around looking a scrap around every corner, they're people with their own goals. With how much I've enjoyed this series, it doesn't shock me to learn they've been so near flawlessly faithful to the original material. The only downside is There won't be Cut content episode from you :/

Anime has shown me the crazy number of recluses in our society.
ive always been into action animes/manga like dragon ball, naruto, jujutsu kaisen etc, but this anime is just amazing, perfect pacing, perfect humor, the animation is beautiful the whole season, and man the emotion and characters, this is my favorite anime of all time
I love the slow pace. Feels like I'm watching a 40 min ep instead of 24. It's weird to call it slow paced though, it seems like a lot stuff is happing at the same time, so much so that I find myself checking in the time thinking the ep is almost other just to be joyfully surprised it's still half way.
I’ve been saving this one until all the episodes were dubbed. Going to binge watch it soon.

I pay to watch anime not read it. If I wanted to read it, I’d just get the light novel which is always superior. The only time I watch subs is if there’s no other option. Except with Dragon Ball, even if there was no other option I guess I’d just avoid it entirely because adult Gohan and Goku’s high pitched lady voices are nails on a chalk bored.

Frieren's action scenes are so well done, and she is OP done right. Watching her interact with her new companions is great. Like finding a person sinking into a bottomless swamp, does she save him or no, because she might get dirty (even though she lifts him by magic)
It’s number 1 for a reason it deserves every bit of praise. This is one of the best shows ever created. Everything about this animes is perfect
I havent watched anime for awhile until this show came out, if the quality and adaption stays true it will definitely be one of my favorites next to FMA
What makes Sousou no Frieren special is it's simple honesty.
Unlucky that eminence in shadow season 2 did not get adapted as well as frieren. Making the choices they made, I feel that they are missing the point of many scenes and fights. That said the last episode that came out was amazing. It really captured the essence of the novels imo.
That's just the classic "i'm overpowered character and bs". Frieren is another thing. For me frieren is leagues above eminence in shadow. Probably becouse i saw lots of those animes. Frieren is really special, EIS is just another power fantasy for me
EIS is just another Isekai, with the exact same tropes as Overlord, Mushoku Tensei, Shield hero,...
Frieren is a real fantasy anime. So the world building and character development is way more important here.
The slow pacing of the story is also specific to this kind of anime since they don't need to feed us with many pointless fight scene because there is nothing else beside that. Just check old fantasy anime like Lodoss or Scrapped Princess, they're all slow paced with amazing story and character arc.
@@JohnSmith-qb9ex eminence is not pure fantasy, it don't have fantasy feeling that much like frieren. It a world with a lost sci-fi technology and was set in industrian revolution. If we talking about pure fantasy anime then frieren and mushoku take the cake and i still think mushoku is miles better than frieren.

And Mushoku is an Isekai with fantasy feature, but it's an Isekai with meta thought.
I hate Isekai because i think they're just copy pasta from one to another, lazy writing and boring character with no personality.
And almost no lore or background because nobody care about it, everyone just wanna see some op douchebag who blast the entire universe every time they fart.
So you can like Mushoku more than Frieren, good for you. But pedo mc are not my cup of tea so i stay with the elf granny.

Its a nice change of pace from the typical fantasy anime, relaxing and doesn't get me going on an emotional rollercoaster. I'm enjoying it.

Tbf the FMA review score is so long at the top because the fanatical fanbase. The score is artificially kept high by their bots and they have downvoted all other competitors, it is almost pathetic what they are doing.

I love watching how Seldom the characters are. the traveling is so far and places like villages is far in between. That there is rarely anything that excites the party into full on emotion. They might get happier or angrier about something but it is largely noticed by observing their face and demeanor. There is almost never a outburst of any kind coming from a character.
Frieren is thoughtful. Somber, calm and introspective. It is sweet, and melancholy, and joyful. It's not about the spells, it is about life. And it's beautiful. "I am unsure if heaven exists or not. But I believe it should. So I believe in it."

I think Frieren does deserve to be way up there, maybe even #1 and it would be because it has so many things going for it. The main interesting concept about it is that despite Frieren having travelled the world, when we join up her in the story she's actually experiencing it for the first time; and we get to experience it in the exact same way. It's similar to how our own memories work, how we gloss over events in our past the first time around; but revisiting creates a whole new and more vivid experience.
Something that also stands out is their portrayal of demons is basically truer to their 'original' form of cold, logical, heartless, and sadistic; none of the whole "demon lord" trope stuff that goes on these days of them being humans with horns. Course they maintain the appearance of 'humans with horns' to great effect whenever they demonstrate their true nature to the humans around them.
I can only imagine that Frieren resonates with introverts in general, because there are many people who do take things a lot slower; to be the ones watching from behind as the hot blooded person they're with goes charging in, and inevitably have to clean up the resulting mess. Course while the whole experience would be tiresome at the moment, upon reflection it would maybe be a fun memory to have.
This anime is so wholesome. I love it. It's so good, i dont even know how to describe it. The interaction and everything it's amazing. One of my favorite for sure

as a german the names sadly turn me off quite a bit. so far Frieren takes a top place with dumbest names ever in anime history for me.
It makes sense in the story, i guess push your way through the cringe worthy names because dude the story is just that good

I'm usually an action anime type of person, but I love this show. It's very comfy. The scenery, animation and soundtrack is beautiful and her going back to familiar places and reminiscing about her friends who are long gone feels relatable. It's pretty unique as far as anime goes.
What I love about Sousou no Frieren is how well it displays time to an elf.
Its already been 3 years since she started traveling with Fern. But it doesnt feel like that for us - its been like 5 episodes per year at most. And I think that is so perfect, because that is likely how time feels to Frieren. Its been a mere 3 years after all.
My favorite way to measure time is how tall Fern is compared to Frieren.
The show is popular because of the waifu being a bit original. It's not much better than others, it's just do the same thing more subtle with a theme at least of time, but for kids.

This anime is so well put together and does a fantastic job at pulling you into the story. I think even if this style is not your go to, it will still win you over. It sure did for me

As someone who rarely if ever likes anime - friends have been trying to convince me otherwise for literally decades, and in that time I found maybe two movies and a series or two I found good - I was pointed towards Frieren a few days ago. Yet another attempt at making me like anime. Only this one did stick, and to an extent that last happened with Ghost in the Shell. So, yes, in a way that is me saying that this is my top anime, though I never before thought about having one. I also think part of it is that it works in contrast to our accelerating daily lives; I think just enough backdrop plot to keep us watching in combination with the slow pace is a large part of the magic here. It also contrasts a lot with how many movies and series work these days, with often rapid cuts and constant rapid plot movement, which makes Frieren refreshing in comparison.
Frieren tells its stories like no other. Just about each episode has a message with significant impact on my emotions

Almost reminds me of to your eternity, but it is so unique in its own right. I love the change of pace and it's nice to see a new story with a different concept that focuses on a story being told, rather than a comedic relief every 5 minutes stocked with fan service. I appreciate Frieren because it is a true work of art that had a lot of thought put into it. It's a beautiful show about living life and how different people go about it, and how people aren't just one demensional character tropes. There's so much going on in such simplicity and im so amazed with this journey i could embark on with her.

It's not only did they adapt it faithfully, they actually improved upon with drecting animation and especially choosing where to use music (which in itself is epic) and where to keep it silent. 10/10

Another anime that does the immortal trope really phenomenal is to your eternity I highly recommend it if you liked Frieren

After watching content from your channel on and off for maybe a year, I finally decided to subscribe due to the critical thought and depth of research you do in your videos. With so many channels that seem to just do basic recaps or surface level pandering, I feel like you actually provide something novel to the scene.
I devoured action anime in my early college years in early 2010s and then I slowed down my pace for I saw how most of the anime that was coming out was not so appealing. Then in my 30s finding this as a grown man was very refreshing. Got to love the show so much that I bought all the manga.
As someone who grew up on the older anime that were a great balance of story/action, and then appreciating more story based anime (Like Spice and Wolf) as well as FMAB (Because this anime is actually more story driven than action driven), it was easy for me to get into anime like Frieren and even Horimiya and My Dress Up Darling.
It really just comes down to "What do i feel like really watching in this area of my life" and realizing that story based anime is where it's at for me. This also includes less raunchy isekai, ones that are actually solid story-based anime, like Mushoku Tensei (for instance).
I've never read the manga/visual novel for frieren, but i'm in absolute love with the anime and easily one of my favorites.
The appeal to Frieren is the Superman appeal. Someone with so much power caring about the small things. Very wholesome

I love this series. Not surprised its no. 1. It hits so many notes. The studio did it justice by following the manga very closely. Hope they don't change in the second season.

P.S. In hindsight and looking back in time, we humans are also kinda like Frieren where time passed in the blink of an eye on people or things we didn't pay enough attention to.
This show is good because of all the downtime episodes. The winter they spent in the cabin with the monk to later find out he used to be this hero a long time ago. Great storytelling!
As someone who enjoys lots of fantasy stories, and specifically in regards to playing DnD, i relate the struggles and connections that my DnD characters have made over the course of their journeys to those in Frieren and it feels like a more vibrant and visual medium to imagine my own experiences. I find it so interesting, and I really enjoy the more thematic, story-driven fantasy elements more than the cool fights
