What's inside an Öhlins Shock?

- Just what the bloody hell is inside an Öhlins shock? Recall work was due on BvG's TTX anyway, so we decided to take the cameras down to James at JHS Racing and film it being stripped to its bare bones - something you don’t normally get to see. Not sure how many more innuendoes could make the cut…

I really enjoyed the 20 odd seconds that were in focus.
I couldn't watch past 8minutes for this reason
"Master of ZOOM", he is not.
That man knows his shit and loves his job (or at least doesn't dislike it), always good to see.
Were you talking about the doctor, fingering the poor guys bum….after a crash?……….if that is so…..then it’s even weirder.
These are the only workshop videos that hold my attention all the way through. That says a lot about your videos. Good work guys
+Ian Daniels its almost like Mighty Car Mods for bikes
+cheeseypie5555 or AvE?
The most entertaining mechanic video I've ever seen. This was too funny.
A mechanic who really knows his way around these shocks! And beautiful mechanical construction!
these workshop sessions are awesome ! looking forward to similar sessions on barons bmw r100 also
+siddharth deshpande
holy shite good point. forgot about that bike, cant wait
These JHS tech vids are really growing on me....love the sense of comraderie and humilty of the workshop
Simply loved this session. The way you guys had presented it, makes it so enjoyable, informative and I wasn't bored one bit. Most session videos are boring and monotonous. Look forward to watch more such videos and learn. Also, appreciate the gentleman demonstrating the whole process, I'm guessing he's the owner of the garage. I find him so ethical to his profession, when he stated, for a average rider, it'd be sufficient to service it once in two years. Most out there, would try to fleece you, against guys like him, who are passionate about their profession.
I was in England for 3 years and I wish, I had a Guru like him. I'd have loved to work for him, without getting paid, just so I could learn so much. Again, hats off to you guys, please shoot more such videos.
this is an extremely satisfying video in any way imaginable
It's nice to watch guys from other countries do their thing..I just had my ohlins shocks serviced and the dude was so uptight,I worried a bit,but all was good and $700 later I had 6 shocks serviced! For racecar, not motorcycle..but still ohlins shocks! Great stuff!
favorite part :
"what would happen ?"
"you would be cover with oil"
"... like a bukkake ?"
ROFL ! Nailed it !
This is exactly why I don't work on my own suspension. Need way too many specialty tools if you want to do the job right.
Changed the fork seal before on my 2002 GSXR750, and what a pain in the ass. Had to make up all this special shit, and still couldn't do the job 100% correctly.
Anywhoo, thanks for the vid! Funny and informative
Did he say he was a Doctor ? thinkin' maybe it was the janitor strolling by...
This video was absolutely amazing. Great job guys, keep it going!
super educational and entertaining. I love to see a guy that not only knows what he is talking about but has the correct tools to do the job.
love the banter... it's like being there at the workshop with you and old friends. Great video, educative and entertaining!
I wish to apprentice under him ! So very knowledgeable. Absolutely spot on and funny to boot.
Definitely my favorite channel. It’s like watching a sitcom about sport bikes, but better.
are you sure that guy was an actually doctor? I think out of all the videos you guys have made, this is my favourite. 2 knob jockeys being taught by an old fella how to handle precision parts and we all learn how ohlins shocks work. It's lovely stuff...........
Thank you for reminding me why I work the job I do - One day, it'll get me into Moto world with my R1. I love these tech videos as much as actually riding the machine on a track.
By far my favourite word after moist is lush. Thats proper fitting work in that shock and I'd love to see it done again
Great video and shows how much effort goes into just one component of a bike.
cracking video. I almost understood the techie side of it.
fantastic job ini! keep up the good work lads, nobody else is doing these sort of videos.
I was skeptical if a video about a shock would be entertaining but this certainly was lol
On a side note, I'm watching the Isle of Man 2014 Blu-ray right now and there's an interview with your suspension guy here on it. Small world.
It is very easy to imagine the level of conversation in between Baron and Al. Especially if it takes place in a local pub after two-three pints and local beauty queen walks in. Great vid!
I can't not start giggling to myself when I hear a word that I know will get a reaction form you.
This was honestly both entertaining and informational, brilliant video!
Great to see stuff like that! And the precision on these things is amazing, what a job to devolop and to build them it must be :)
Great - now when I look at the left side of my Panigale I can't help but say "Moon Beast"
What a great video!
Makes me want to ride 3hrs to have JHS sort out my suspension.
There's something satisfying about reassembling a freshly cleaned and refurbished mechanical device. Thet guy's an awesome tech.
You can never have too many innuendos!
This was both realy informative as well as hilarious.
8:50 -It looks like a terrified moon beast....
9.06 -Ohh, we taking hes eye out...
Thanks guys
That was not only really informative and interesting, it was also highly amusing. Got to love the West Country accents. Brilliant!
Pure gold. More of this please
Big thumbs to your mechanic, very detailed information, awesome post!
12:50 Such a heart warming story, beautifully told.
As a trauma nurse for 16 years whenever a trauma comes in to the trauma bay one of the first procedures done is doing a rectal exam to see if there’s any blood in the bottom which would be a sign of an internal injury where one could bleed out in less than a minute another Procedure done is a fast scan of the abdomen it’s kind of a quick general ultra sound to see if there is any internal bleeding from any of the organs which wouldn’t be seen initially and could be a slow bleed from a vital organ or a slow bleed that turns into a quick bleed with movement so hope You enjoyed the moment. That’s the problem with doctors they don’t communicate well if he told you what he was doing and for what reason it probably would’ve been a more welcoming experience
Nah it wouldn't, Al talking about being violated is worth any price of admission.
Either sex mad or sexually frustrated those two. Lol very funny though
Al's a subscriber to 'the best of 60 and up'
they are gay couple i think.
Both
I'm pretty sure Ohlins are crammed with 100 dollar bills.
Cracking video chaps , loving the detail !
Old but golden to watch you guys in the workshop LOL
That was great. U should do more videos at this shop. Very good at explaining the works
These 3 together are just too funny 😂 Love the accent 😂
I've been meaning to watch this for a while now, so glad I did, this video was excellent. Very funny
lol @12:45 are you sure he was a doctor?
To check for blood in lower GI tract, following trauma.
@@rattusnorvegicus4380 But he was the janitor. The uniforms all look the same sometimes.
Haha, that`s not stopped people practicing before....all they need is a uniform...
And sure it was his finger?
beautiful engineering - good to see perfectionists at work - should be more of it these days
Oh guys you are so much fun. Great company. And a joy to watch (has to be read in Barons voice)
How on earth did I miss this double entendre laden delight first time round, it's a mini "Carry On Servicing My Rear End" movie.
The mechanic is priceless, the way he pretends not to hear "shall we do some"... 😂
I was surprised how interesting that was, well explained. For some reason I expected some electronics to be in there, but now I know better. Thanks for a great video.
Both instructive and include some good laughs.
_"His looking a little cross eyed".
Hilarious cos it really did :-)
Great vid guys
I do enjoy watching the commentary in these videos. Plus, I also learn new things :3 Keep them coming team ^.^
Hey, +44Teeth are you guys going to do more videos of assembly breakdowns? Definitely one of the most entertaining mechanic videos I've seen. Would really like to see some other stuff, like fork breakdown, transmission, etc.
How did riding after the rebuild feel?
Great video. Makes me appreciate the Ohlins engineering even more. After watching, I was still asking myself, what was it that was causing the leak? He speculated it was either the compression or rebound valve but didn't really see if and what it was.
Can we we go back to true hospital stories with AF?
Bloody brilliant video guys! I love these.
As someone who's looking to compete next year, i find this sort of stuff fascinating!
More innuendo than a carry-on movie. Top work guys. Though I can't help but wonder if you're both going to end up in a line-up one day for some sexual misdemeanour.
Why did it take so long for me to find this?
It's freaking awesome on so many levels!
It truly is shocking, the amount of engineering that goes into building these things!
Oh, +BaronVonGrumble who told you that nitrogen would kill you? The air is 79% nitrogen...
+thefooleryoftom asphyxiation
That would only occur at more than 80% concentration of the atmosphere around you, and even then very slowly. If it were 100%, 2-3 minutes.
Fantastic video.. do more of these!!
This was really cool! I'd like to see more maintenance videos
best video to date. more of these please.
Took me too long to remember this is BVG, I knew I recognised the voice from somewhere. Either him, or the Pascal guy especially with all the innuendo, hope I'm not the only one.
😂 Terrified moon beast mooooooo haha good work as always lads
Good informative video, I assume the adjusters are left hand thread, as it looked like they were being wound in at 15:08. Really love the details given in these videos. :)
£120 + VAT is cheap for the time involved in the job also.
ash bandicoot
Love this!! Great work and a beautiful shock.
This is more like it Grumbler, an informal yet informative video, good work
Many thanks for sharing guys!!! There is almost no other way humans can see this kind of stuff. Awesome!!!
This was fantastic, I have no idea what half of the stuff meant but it was dam interesting. Oh and baron thanks for posting the sport bike through the city video.
More of these, please.
Well, it's kinda cool to hear the voices of all these guys I read about every month. This was educational.
Awesome video guys. Learned a lot.
this is the best video I've seen on you tube. you deserve your own show. funny as f**k
17:35 I can not agree.
When u compress the spring there is still a space behind the piston. I guess the idea behind was to make it fill easier by avoiding air pockets but as i said - compressing it still leaves an areas that can cause us a problem. I guess sometimes, due to design, voids can create. I guess the only remedy is to cycle the shock few times in different positions when u fill it with oil.
I think you probably sold a few Ohlins shocks with this video. I watched the whole way though mesmerized at the F1-like quality and witty sexual banter, lol. I know I want one now...that's what she said.
Fantastic! keep them coming
Fun fact, TTX is also the abbreviation for Tetrodotoxin which is the neurotoxin found in pufferfish
This is too funny! LOL I haven't laughed that good for several days.... It was also interesting; didn't know how shocks worked, just knew if they were doing it or not. Oh dear, you've got me doing it now. LOL
Love these type of videos!
10:45 "...it'll just blow right in your face and you'll be covered." "Like bukkake?" Scene cut.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! OMG, DAMN, that was funny!!!!
"Ohh that went in nice didn't it" SMooth. Great video gents.
14:28 I can't stop crying X'D Ahahaha
LOOOOL
Looks like those bundle of lollipops you find in shops but they seem to have gone past the expiry date...
Love these workshop vids
20:52 what bike is that in gold? nice
+Timbo “Tranc3r” Yuen I think It's the Fireblade that Baron Von Grumble rode in one of his episodes.
The bit with the bloody grease was funny af
Just snorted when you said "terrified Moon Beast" LOL
damn it, i had to watch half of the video twice.
i was too busy laughing with the alien crosseyed monster lol
This should be the best Video on youtube!
I'd like to see more stuff like this. Very interesting.
Nice video really enjoyed it, the production quality is great, just a shame about the autofocus on the camera - still better than some motorcycle publications though!
This was incredibly informative, funny and informal. really liked the mechanic too - any chacne you guys will do more of these sessions? It'd be an amazing way to get more info on how all our shit actually works!
Thanks Baron and Alastair!
Baron you are a funny man. I loved this vid, awsome explanation of how it all works.
That was quite satisfying to watch and educational 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nothing says comedy side kick better than a good underbite. “Yersh bosssh”
The mechanic doesn't say "Oo arr, oo arr" nearly enough for _anyone's_ satisfaction.
