@@kiraniqbal590 Pathoma is #1 for path. Robbins & Cotran Pathology textbook is also very good. For Micro, I would give Sketchy Micro a shot if you haven’t already, as so many students swear by it, including me. But Lecturio, and “Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple” textbook are other resources you can try for Micro.

Yes, and Boards & Beyond and AMBOSS are pretty comprehensive for content review (as opposed to just practice Qs). If you’re an Anki user, there are several pre-made flash card decks (eg. Zanki, Brosencephalon) you can download for free!
What do you think about starting uworld directly without doing a boards and beyond/First Aid read? I am a medical graduate and an IMG, I only have until May to give Step 1. I'm not saying I have a great base knowledge since I did basic sciences 4 years ago, but I was thinking about using the questions to go back and do those parts from First Aid. Using uworld as a learning tool basically.
You should absolutely use UWorld as a learning tool. I think it's a fine primary study method, as long as you take every block timed, take good organized notes from the explanations, read those notes regularly and redo ALL of your incorrects until you get each one correct. This is more or less what I did for Step 2 and I did really well. I'd still recommend doing 2-3 passes of Pathoma Ch. 1-3 (Pathology up to 52% of Step 1 Qs) at the very least if you can budget the time. The Boards & Beyond for Biochem is just 9 hours of video that could cover as many as 24% of your Step 1 questions. Not quite as important as Pathoma, but if you can budget out the time I would consider it. Good luck on your exam!!!!

Chapter 2 of Pathoma is 🔥 for Immunology, another reason why Pathoma Ch 1-3 are so clutch. You could also memorize the immunologic pathways in First Aid!

Thanks Noel! Boards & Beyond has a section for each of those that are pretty good. First Aid has comprehensive sections on all of them as well. For anatomy/embryology, I also found USMLE-Rx’s 5-10 min videos to be pretty helpful!

Enjoy life and all your free time now that you’re accepted and congratulate yourself for getting accepted into medical school! Once you start, try to know the subjects you’re responsible for for each block and break it into one day at a time so you’re not overwhelmed and can know you’re on the right track at the end of each day. Study in parallel with UWorld +/- First Aid, use Pathoma, Sketchy, B&B when relevant to your med school exams so you’re Step 1 knowledge is bulked up even before you start dedicated study for it. Also make friends with older students who took the blocks before you and know the ins and outs at your med school and can give you notes or anki decks. But don’t even worry about all that until September!!
Definitely! Favor getting multiple passes of the best practice questions (UWorld) so you can immediately recognize the testable concept(s) of that question as soon as it pops up. Kaplan and USMLE-Rx are nice to warm up with early on if you have more time, but UWorld is the Q-bank I told Kaplan and USMLE-Rx not to worry about 😂
I’ve heard through the grapevine that Dr. Najeeb lectures are fantastic. Ninja Nerd is also full of high quality physiology lectures. I used it to tackle the beast that is renal physiology!
I coudn't have found your video at a better time- thank you ,Tim! I'm 5 weeks out to test day, and I couldn't decide on how I can be prepping at this point. I'm still at around 35% through uw, and I'm particularly iffy about pharmacology and physiology to some degree. I'm going to amp up the questions per day + try the method of getting through the two passes of UW + video resources. Thanks again! PS: What do you think about physeo as a resource for physiology?
Good luck! I never used Physeo but I just checked it out. I can’t speak from experience but it looks to be very comprehensive resource with textbooks, downloadable Anki decks and quiz questions which I like a lot. If you find the “Sketchy” style of visual learning most helpful for memory of Physiology then I think you’d do well by it!
What’s up Edgar! The USMLE changed the minimum passing score from 194 to 196 as part of their big P/F change. So I would say a 204 is the absolute bare minimum score you’re looking for on a practice form, since that would put your 67% confidence interval at 196-212!

My question is about Anki application, is it possible to pass without using this application and in your opinion, will there be a major difference between First Aid Step1 2021 and 2022 that will affect on pass/fail. I learned all high-yield principles with 2021 First Aid and now, as my dedicate period already started and FA 2022 is out should I take time and compare all the differences?
Great questions! Anki was not my primary study method for either Step 1 or Step 2. It is an extraordinary tool if used right, but you can definitely pass without it. I read through the changes in First Aid 2022 and there’s minimal change in content from FA 2021. I wouldn’t get hung up on any differences, since the Step 1 content is the same!
Genetics wasn’t high yield enough of a section for me to devote a resource to it. You can pretty much get what you need as a byproduct of studying everything else. For Immuno, Pathoma chapters 1-3!

The NBME keeps the exact numbers on the hush hush, but it’s true: up to 80. There’s a super informative blog post on this and the Step 1 score variance, which I’ll drop in the description.
Thanks! 🎉 I used FA more for reference and quick reviews for certain subjects than as a primary study method, because I personally learn a lot better by practice Qs than just reading a textbook. But other students I know learned the material well by reading FA straight through. It was great for studying in parallel for med school exams, but then I didn’t use it as much once dedicated hit.
tips for someone who is struggling to improve on his practice scores? I wanted to take Step 1 in a couple months but these NBMEs are killing me and my confidence 😓
2 months is plenty of time to improve your score. I also think you’re taking the NBMEs a bit early to let it worry you this much. However, in the worst case scenario that you’re 1-2 weeks away from test day and you’re ranging at or below the pass cutoff, only then I would consider postponing my test date if I were in that position. The fee is worth it to avoid having a failed Step 1 on your transcript. But you got this man. Pathoma and UWorld, UWorld, World. Great name, by the way.

First Aid has virtually everything you can be asked on step 1. Great to read and study it along with your med school science blocks. B&B is great for studying certain subjects (I loved it for biochem). There are so many hours of B&B videos that you may have to be selective about which of his videos you use to study.

7 months is more than enough time to generate a passing score. My advice in this video to start on day 1 of medical school is the best advice for locking in the knowledge long term (and scoring 260+ on the old Step 1) which will pay massive dividends in your 3rd and 4th years. But for the purposes of passing the new step 1, starting 7-8 months before (using the right resources) is plenty of time! As for the resources, UWorld is of course essential. Definitely don’t skip out on Pathoma. B&B is great for Biochem and other non-pathology content. I personally can’t recommend the Sketchys enough for Pharm and Micro! They are short and sweet and give you all the high yield facts you need for those subjects.
Do you think 6 month subscription is enough now that step 1 is p/f and i do UW after first pass of FA and doing RX qbank? Also can i use word doc instead of one note or its not good idea for UW incorrects?
6 month subscription is definitely enough time especially since you just need to Pass. Word doc is also great for notes! I’ve heard of people using Word, PowerPoint or Anki for their incorrect reviews that absolutely crushed Step 1. The main idea is to drill in those incorrects until you can get them correct with your eyes closed. I just prefer OneNote because of how organization and versatility!
So a full pass of all your uWorld questions. does this mean being able to go through all the questions (passed and failed) and only getting passes?. I once saw a video on how some questions can be put in one section to be able to go over them again but only those that did not make a pass
Basically, repeat every question you get wrong until you get it right at least once, AND understand why you got it right. In the video I also talk about how to do a hard reset so you can even redo the questions you got right the first time but haven’t seen in a while. Hope I’m explaining it well!

My question is that doing Uworld, Bnb-biochem, sketchy for pharmac and micro,Pathoma and First aid book,notes n finally NBME would be enough? Hi Jahanvi! My opinion is that if you use the sources in this video, you have a HIGH chance of passing. If you are able to complete 2-3 passes of the UWorld question bank (repeating incorrects) then you shouldn’t need Kaplan or any other Q bank. If you have at least 6 months until your test, you have more than enough time to use these resources and pass with flying colors, as long as you stay focused and stick to your study plan!

About pathoma, i only have to do the first 3 chapters from it right ? i'm a fresh graduate and have a really crisp knowledge of all the pathology and stuff as i did sketchy path in my 4th year too. i'm planning on doing my internship in my parent country from like june. do you think i'll be ready for the test by the end of year and how much time per day is necessary ?
Hey Nooray! Pathoma Ch 1-3 are definitely the highest yield, but since pathology is the most tested discipline on Step 1, you want to make sure you have a solid understanding of the concepts in every chapter. If your pathology question performance on your UWorld blocks is already great, you shouldn’t have to do every chapter, except the ones with material you need to improve. How much time per day you spend is less important than how much material you get through. For example, if your exam is in 19 weeks, you’d just need to get through 1 chapter per week on average to master all 19 chapters of Pathoma!
First Aid has virtually all of the content you could see on Step 1, except the inevitable highly advanced questions that you can’t prepare for. If you learn well by reading from a textbook, then First Aid is perfect as long as you’re testing your knowledge with UWorld and/or Anki.
@@JavaughnJPorter the UWorld “p-rank” is short for percentile rank, and you can find it in your UWorld account by clicking “Performance” then “Reports”. Under Reports, your p-rank is listed for each discipline (Path, Phys, etc). It’s another reason why I recommend getting most UW Qs done early, because you’ll know where you stand with each one and can strategize where you can gain the most points before you really put the rubber to the road during dedicated. The purpose of the UWorld Notebook during dedicated is to separate your personal most to least important disciplines into their own pages, based on your p-rank and the % weight of each one on Step 1. I use OneNote, which lets you create a Notebook (eg “UW Notes”), organized by Pages (eg Path, Phys, Biochem, etc). This way when you get a Pathology Q wrong for example, you can take your notes on that question in the Pathology page of your UWorld Notes notebook.

Hey Quinn! My opinion is it works best as a reference or intermittent review rather than a primary study tool. Although if you’re an avid Anki user there are premade decks that have all of First Aid covered, which is a much better way to memorize it. There are students out there that learn well by reading out of a textbook, but I’ve always found it more effective to have a Q bank based study approach to build test-taking muscle memory. When you’re studying you might find that many of your incorrect answers aren’t from a lack of knowledge, but from not knowing how to apply it in a USMLE style question. Hope that helps, and good luck!!!

I’m all for studying side by side (“in parallel”). There’s great overlap with step 1 and med school exam material so it shouldn’t slow you down. I definitely think you should get a UWorld subscription if you haven’t already!

Even with a month left till the exam, you have penalty of time to improve your score! Keep repeating incorrect UWorld questions, and take notes on them especially the ones you struggle with. Review those notes every day to lock them in!
Since it has become pass/fail exam do you still recommend i do usmle step 1 book and pathoma or just go for uworld qbank and learn from explanations. Note: i did step2 qbank multiple times and took it before step 1
Pathoma is still important to complete for nailing down pathology (the highest yield subject on Step 1). UWorld for 2 passes and making sure you take notes on explanations and review those notes should set you up for success. First Aid wasn’t one of my main study resources really. I used it more as a reference.
It’s all relative and depends how confident you want to be that you’ll pass. For content review, Pathoma is the most important. Micro is 10-15% of Step 1 questions so not the most high yield discipline per se but Sketchy Micro is incredibly effective for learning it.

What’s up Edgar! The USMLE changed the minimum passing score from 194 to 196 as part of their big P/F change. So I would say a 204 is the absolute bare minimum score you’re looking for on a practice form, since that would put your 67% confidence interval at 196-212!

My question is about Anki application, is it possible to pass without using this application and in your opinion, will there be a major difference between First Aid Step1 2021 and 2022 that will affect on pass/fail. I learned all high-yield principles with 2021 First Aid and now, as my dedicate period already started and FA 2022 is out should I take time and compare all the differences?
Great questions!
Anki was not my primary study method for either Step 1 or Step 2. It is an extraordinary tool if used right, but you can definitely pass without it.
I read through the changes in First Aid 2022 and there’s minimal change in content from FA 2021. I wouldn’t get hung up on any differences, since the Step 1 content is the same!

Genetics wasn’t high yield enough of a section for me to devote a resource to it. You can pretty much get what you need as a byproduct of studying everything else. For Immuno, Pathoma chapters 1-3!

The NBME keeps the exact numbers on the hush hush, but it’s true: up to 80. There’s a super informative blog post on this and the Step 1 score variance, which I’ll drop in the description.

I used FA more for reference and quick reviews for certain subjects than as a primary study method, because I personally learn a lot better by practice Qs than just reading a textbook. But other students I know learned the material well by reading FA straight through. It was great for studying in parallel for med school exams, but then I didn’t use it as much once dedicated hit.

tips for someone who is struggling to improve on his practice scores? I wanted to take Step 1 in a couple months but these NBMEs are killing me and my confidence 😓
2 months is plenty of time to improve your score. I also think you’re taking the NBMEs a bit early to let it worry you this much.
However, in the worst case scenario that you’re 1-2 weeks away from test day and you’re ranging at or below the pass cutoff, only then I would consider postponing my test date if I were in that position. The fee is worth it to avoid having a failed Step 1 on your transcript.
But you got this man. Pathoma and UWorld, UWorld, World.

First Aid has virtually everything you can be asked on step 1. Great to read and study it along with your med school science blocks.
B&B is great for studying certain subjects (I loved it for biochem). There are so many hours of B&B videos that you may have to be selective about which of his videos you use to study.

7 months is more than enough time to generate a passing score. My advice in this video to start on day 1 of medical school is the best advice for locking in the knowledge long term (and scoring 260+ on the old Step 1) which will pay massive dividends in your 3rd and 4th years. But for the purposes of passing the new step 1, starting 7-8 months before (using the right resources) is plenty of time!
As for the resources, UWorld is of course essential. Definitely don’t skip out on Pathoma. B&B is great for Biochem and other non-pathology content. I personally can’t recommend the Sketchys enough for Pharm and Micro! They are short and sweet and give you all the high yield facts you need for those subjects.

6 month subscription is definitely enough time especially since you just need to Pass.
Word doc is also great for notes! I’ve heard of people using Word, PowerPoint or Anki for their incorrect reviews that absolutely crushed Step 1. The main idea is to drill in those incorrects until you can get them correct with your eyes closed. I just prefer OneNote because of how organization and versatility!
So a full pass of all your uWorld questions. does this mean being able to go through all the questions (passed and failed) and only getting passes?. I once saw a video on how some questions can be put in one section to be able to go over them again but only those that did not make a pass
Basically, repeat every question you get wrong until you get it right at least once, AND understand why you got it right. In the video I also talk about how to do a hard reset so you can even redo the questions you got right the first time but haven’t seen in a while. Hope I’m explaining it well!

Hi Jahanvi! My opinion is that if you use the sources in this video, you have a HIGH chance of passing. If you are able to complete 2-3 passes of the UWorld question bank (repeating incorrects) then you shouldn’t need Kaplan or any other Q bank. If you have at least 6 months until your test, you have more than enough time to use these resources and pass with flying colors, as long as you stay focused and stick to your study plan!

About pathoma, i only have to do the first 3 chapters from it right ? i'm a fresh graduate and have a really crisp knowledge of all the pathology and stuff as i did sketchy path in my 4th year too. i'm planning on doing my internship in my parent country from like june. do you think i'll be ready for the test by the end of year and how much time per day is necessary ?
Hey Nooray! Pathoma Ch 1-3 are definitely the highest yield, but since pathology is the most tested discipline on Step 1, you want to make sure you have a solid understanding of the concepts in every chapter. If your pathology question performance on your UWorld blocks is already great, you shouldn’t have to do every chapter, except the ones with material you need to improve.
How much time per day you spend is less important than how much material you get through. For example, if your exam is in 19 weeks, you’d just need to get through 1 chapter per week on average to master all 19 chapters of Pathoma!
Hey Tim how about First Aid?
First Aid has virtually all of the content you could see on Step 1, except the inevitable highly advanced questions that you can’t prepare for.
If you learn well by reading from a textbook, then First Aid is perfect as long as you’re testing your knowledge with UWorld and/or Anki.

@@JavaughnJPorter the UWorld “p-rank” is short for percentile rank, and you can find it in your UWorld account by clicking “Performance” then “Reports”. Under Reports, your p-rank is listed for each discipline (Path, Phys, etc). It’s another reason why I recommend getting most UW Qs done early, because you’ll know where you stand with each one and can strategize where you can gain the most points before you really put the rubber to the road during dedicated.
The purpose of the UWorld Notebook during dedicated is to separate your personal most to least important disciplines into their own pages, based on your p-rank and the % weight of each one on Step 1. I use OneNote, which lets you create a Notebook (eg “UW Notes”), organized by Pages (eg Path, Phys, Biochem, etc). This way when you get a Pathology Q wrong for example, you can take your notes on that question in the Pathology page of your UWorld Notes notebook.

Hey Quinn! My opinion is it works best as a reference or intermittent review rather than a primary study tool. Although if you’re an avid Anki user there are premade decks that have all of First Aid covered, which is a much better way to memorize it. There are students out there that learn well by reading out of a textbook, but I’ve always found it more effective to have a Q bank based study approach to build test-taking muscle memory. When you’re studying you might find that many of your incorrect answers aren’t from a lack of knowledge, but from not knowing how to apply it in a USMLE style question. I’m all for studying side by side (“in parallel”). There’s great overlap with step 1 and med school exam material so it shouldn’t slow you down. I definitely think you should get a UWorld subscription if you haven’t already!

Even with a month left till the exam, you have penalty of time to improve your score! Keep repeating incorrect UWorld questions, and take notes on them especially the ones you struggle with. Review those notes every day to lock them in!

Is doing a qbank like usmlerx before using uworld a good idea?
Since it has become pass/fail exam do you still recommend i do usmle step 1 book and pathoma or just go for uworld qbank and learn from explanations. Note: i did step2 qbank multiple times and took it before step 1
Pathoma is still important to complete for nailing down pathology (the highest yield subject on Step 1). UWorld for 2 passes and making sure you take notes on explanations and review those notes should set you up for success. First Aid wasn’t one of my main study resources really. I used it more as a reference.

It’s all relative and depends how confident you want to be that you’ll pass. For content review, Pathoma is the most important. Micro is 10-15% of Step 1 questions so not the most high yield discipline per se but Sketchy Micro is incredibly effective for learning it.
