"Mexican Special Forces, 141. They are your brothers now. Treat 'em like your own"
Man this line always get me
Mexican Especial Forces**
He has to redeem himself especially since shepherd betrayed him
@@MottenManOne This is wrong lol Especial is in Spanish and if anything you would say something like Fuerzas Especiales Mexicanas
Graves later on, Basically: "We have detained our brothers."
@@PLANDerLinde99 maybe its how they usually treat their own.
LOVE how Shepard says "I don't care where he got the missiles from I want to know where they are going." Cause him and Graves both know where they came from.
The second he says that and he wanted the missles destroyed I knew where this storyline was going, Graves I had no actual bias or feelings toward since he was kind of new to me so it caught me off guard that he would betray us too.
@@Auxifyz Yea Graves I was just sus of because of OG MW2 Shadow Company is Shepards troops
I assumed after that line that Shepherd intentionally gave the missiles to terrorists, possibly to start a war much like the 2009 game.
Graves also subtly admits being involved with the missiles when he tells Hassan they were going to “nail his ass.”
Yeah looking back at the cutscenes after a playthrough the signs were all there, Really well thought out storyline.
Yea, looking back on it with my full understanding of the plot, it's such a cool detail :D
Also when Shepherd says that he wants the missiles destroyed right after Laswell says that she'll "figure out anyone who's ever breathed on those missiles", I just love trying to find more dialogue and details that I would've otherwise not noticed hinting at the betrayal
The problem with Graves betrayal is that it’s a complete 180. He goes from charming and likeable that gets along really well with 141 and Mexican Special Forces to an obnoxious ass. I don’t know they couldn’t let Graves still be likeable after. Instead, let’s just have him execute civilians on some kind of power trip demanding Hassan’s location even though Valeria is in his custody and knows where he is.
From
“All Shadows listen up, Mexican Special Forces, 141, they are your BROTHERS now. Treat em like your own.”
To
“Take ‘em dead or alive. You know my preference.”
He was only working with 141 and Alejandro to destroy the missiles. Shepherd probably didn’t give a shit if he killed them or Mexican civilians to get what they want. The betrayal part was done pretty weirdly in this game though would’ve made more sense if it happened after they stopped the last missile and Hassan.
@@tabrisss818 it’s still executed poorly. The only hint that Graves is gonna betray us is his claim that he has enough soldiers to take over the country which could just be interpreted as him seeing the mission as a cakewalk. Beyond that all his interactions with 141 suggest even if Shadow Company does betray us, he’ll stay as an ally. Instead he acts weirdly out of character and wants to kill civilians even though he ordered his men to minimize casualties in the AC-130.
@@howdoichangemyusername9802 I think the biggest tell is when Valeria says that she "hides in plainsight" and Graves says he does the same. Psychopaths are great at hiding their actual personality and using other people to get to their goal.
@@tim7330 I don’t think he admitted that he hid in plain sight when Valeria was confronted. His statement meant that despite her power and influence, 141 and Shadow Company are more than match for her and the cartel. But even if you are right it’s still bad. I don’t care if this is how psychopaths work in real life. This is a story. And in storytelling, if a person acts out of character due to the plot requiring it rather than going through an event that changed their personality, or several hints that point to this being their true personality all along, then it means it’s poor writing.
Graves is a mercenary, this is how they are. He couldn't care less about things like honor or civilian casualties, when Shepherd's paying him fat stacks to do all his dirty work. He's also pretty clearly a psychopath given how nonchalant he acts under situations involving killing people. And yeah, while it's true that the military tries to get you used to the idea of killing someone, Graves is absolutely fine with the idea of feeding Hassan to wild animals or torturing the everliving hell out of Valeria.
Shadow Company has so much more character in this game then the original. Graves is a major part why.
The lack of any backstory is part of what makes them cool and intriguing when they suddenly show up in the original MW2.
@@hellcatdave1 They’re just a PMC group, like numerous other PMC groups in real life like Blackwater.
There’s nothing particularly special about them and they show up as antagonists in the very last part of the game.
@@andrewrogers3067 I think that shadow company ARE blackwater but in MW universe especially when graves is inspired by erik prince the founder of blackwater, when you compare them you’ll see the similarities
@@andrewrogers3067 there is something special about them. They are General Shepards private military. They are also mostly American. It's a whole thing. The new CoD doesn't do anything good with them.
@@hellcatdave1 There is no evidence they are general Shepherd’s private military, in fact the remaster debunks this by showing that they were active from what you read about them in the museum. They were hired with the blank check he got just after the nuke was launched in MW2
They’re just another PMC out of literally thousands of PMCs that exist in the real world.
MW22 not only gives them character in the form of graves and portrays them realistically (Literally No PMC would risk getting blacklisted from the market helping a general start WW3) but you hear them talking with eachother and having conflict and different viewpoints and they are humanized through both that and the time you spend playing as them.
His intentions in the end where good but he drifted more and more away i hope the tank was remote controlled and he gets back as operator
I don't understand how it went from just trying to cover up a mistake to straight up murdering civilians...
@@wakichunu exactly i feel they did a 180 which i dont like he wasn’t a “bad” guy he was a Pmc and thats what they do, but from helping 141 to killing civilians? Uhmm what
@@wakichunu I believe the ones he killed were somehow involved with the cartels so he didn’t hesitate to kill them
@@wakichunu This game was chugging along with its own story, then realized "Hey guys we need to do the Modern Warfare 2 betrayal and have some shocking content."
"Uhhhhhh Graves tells 141 to go home.... They start fighting... Then the shadows go kill 100s of innocent civilians brutally because... Um... Well..."
@@teenexorcism it might not be 180 since he's give us a hint "I'll show you the differences between military and me"
They are mercenary and they work under military operator's command in past mission, that was the main things hold shadows and graves back, but after Darkwater they are on their own in mission, they can use their "own" rule of engagement killing all those corrupeted cop and civi. Which is outside of the actual rule of engagement and morality since they are not combatant.
In my guess, they were just like this since before military contracts
I knew he’d betray me since he’s with the Shadows (who are evil in the OG trilogy).
But I didn’t expect him to be likeable. Whoever wrote his character deserves a raise.
And whoever structured his betrayal deserves the boot
Shadow company are not inherently evil they just mercenaries working whoever pays them they can be easily swayed to be good guys for the right price
@@thefalcromshow3428 Except for the war crimes.
But yeah I agree. I like to pretend those war crimes never happened because they were a shitty attempt to get us to dislike him
Shadow Company isn’t really evil at all, they’re only carrying out Shepherd’s evil orders.

That's why I was sure I'd seen those facial expressions before. Typical Rafe's expressions.

Cool how they gave Graves 2 outfits with different vibes instead of having him wear the same outfit for the entirety of the game, on one hand he looks like an elite soldier in all black, on the other he looks like he was just on a farm and got called into work.
That's the charm of PMCs
"Hook, line and fuckin sinker! thats what im talking about shadows, you know I love that shit!. Comms! get me the general!" fuckin love that military comedic style Graves has, by far my fav character in the game. mans just had that top tier charisma.
Man Graves’ betrayal pisses me off! Dude was the homie!! They literally had to make an ass pull to turn him into a bad guy and all.
With other characters like Salazar and shepherd it made sense and with Hadir he wasn’t really evil but Graves was a complete 180
I mean he was paid by Shephard and his orders came from him, plus with the missiles going missing that was on Graves and Shephard so they are trying everything to hide it.
@@OpticHamster69 that would be like me killing you in order to prevent you from revealing to the public that I killed someone. Will always be my favorite during the Ac130 mission
Having played the original MW2 I expected Shadow Company/Shepard to betray, but they did it in such a half assed "Oh shit we forgot they're suppose to be bad guys!" way that is just felt phoned in
This Graves is actually a reincarnation of another character named Graves back in MW Remastered. You know, that guy in the pack opening screen.
OG Graves had visible burn marks and much larger scars.
And since we didn't see a body, this Graves might reappear in the extended story of MWII, but with his visible injuries. Kinda the same treatment with Alex in MW2019.
they’re two different characters. graves in mwr was irish and “graves” was a nickname. his actual name was darren cosgrave i think. he was funny af.
Is it just me, or does Grave's facial animations look even better than everyone else's?

Rafe Adler is handsome too
Whoever voice acted Graves hit it out the park
If you played uncharted 4 hes actually the same voice actor as rafe

I think the problem with him in the story for me was "I'm not okay with killing Hassan, but lets shoot at our allies and sell missiles illegally." his acting was incredible, so he managed to somehow pull it off.

@@Друг-р4з not like it matters. Graves could canonically be dead and it’d be fine to show him. I mean MW multiplayer can have Farah killing Price and Gaz even though they’re all allies.
It seems to me that the tank was remotely controlled
Yeah, because in that mission even when you are like 30 feet behind the tank it automatically turns and fires. Graves had had to have a vantage point to know where he is.
“If you disappeared no one would know where to look for the fuckin’ stain” 🥶
Graves is my favourite character from the game even though he is a “bad” guy he is still a really enjoyable character and doesn’t deserve the hate for betraying 141
We all knew he was gonna be an antagonist, but the build up to it still hurt anyways
His facial reactions are so goddamn amazing.
Phillip graves -> fill up graves. That’s an all time character name.
Phil Graves - fill graves
The first time graves appeared in the story I loved him so much that I actually googled if he would survive til the end and then spoiled the plot twist for myself.
Imagine Graves is Roach because he survived the tank like a roach 😂
What I love about this campaign was the story not revolving on Hassan and what he plans to do, but the missiles and how they got there. The American flag was obviously the first thing to get the player going but Shephard saying he doesn't care HOW they got American missiles should have been the first huge red flag but it doesn't give any more information than that. The sudden betrayal of Graves and Shadow company is so spine chilling. Bringing the story back down to the characters themselves and the grey lines of morality within power is why this campaign is a success, and I think its the true story CoD should be telling (most the time not all the time) I always loved the quotes when dying that are thought provoking anti-war wisdom from the real world.

5:14 good thing you did something Soap
I liked him as a villain up until the point where they had him literally monologuing while driving a tank like a ridiculous cartoon supervillain.
Graves categorically did not "betray" 141. They were given orders to stand down and were given every chance to do so by Shadow Company. Instead, they violated orders and went AWOL and attacked Graves and the Shadows. Shadow may have fired the first round but that wasn't until Soap tackled one of them and took his gun. Alejandro instigated the whole fight and they took him alive, that alone proves that Shadow had no intention of "betraying" or even fighting 141.
Notice how Graves's name in the subs changes colour during the "betrayal" scene from cyan to red to showcase he is now an enemy.
Graves’s betrayal feels like such an ass pull to keep it in line with og MW2. The betrayal has nothing backing it up. In the original we were being overrun by Russians and saved at the last minute by Shepard only for him to execute Roach and Ghost. It hit so hard because we didn’t expect it and we were in a dire situation. Instead in MW22 we him go from “nice job guys” to “I’ve taken the whole base and city over, restrained Alejandro’s men, and have killed a majority of city’s population” because muh plot twist. If Graves had pulled the 180 betrayal card while we were in a time of need it may have stuck better but we were expecting it at least I was. They should’ve made a member of 141 turn traitor, now that would’ve hit hard. Instead we’ve got a half baked attempt at recreating something from og MW2 just for the sake of recreating it.
Exactly my thoughts. If we were gonna re tread Shadow Company and Shepherd betraying us again, then they had to take a different route, considering it was all in the back of our head. It should’ve been more nuanced. Shepherd is far more reasonable while at the same time, being far more suspicious, so he at least works, considering he only tried to assist America’s allies. Graves on the other hand had to do a 180. Why couldn’t he still maintain a likeable persona? Instead of Graves being conflicted about having dealing with Soap and Ghost, he shows no remorse and decides to kill innocents.
at around 6:10 Graves' subtitle colour turns from blue to red when he mentions that Shepherd is ok with this
I think he genuinely liked the other protagonists but unfortunately he was just Shepherds dog in this story.
Yeah the Vibes he gives eould really suggest he liked them but had no choice as to not betray them and i really hope that he can get back into it after lets say pulling a Alex and faking his death using this tank hopefully he doesnt loose a Leg and then doing a redemtion like helping 141 when they are under heavy fire from Makarovs dudes like TF 141 did in MW3 more or less as they had too redeam themselves for killing Shepherd
The fact that Graves was the one trying to resolve that situation without bloodshed should tell you what kinda man he is.
However he deos start executing civilians in the name of corruption that same night. So I don't know if he's just two faced, or had a random blood lust.

The betraytal scene is so well acted out. Shadow Company deserve their own spinoff.
Graves was only following orders, he didn’t want to fight 141 and MSF
the hindsight I gained from playing the original MW2 means that I was always distrustful of Graves since they were Shepard's own personal army rather than a professional unit.
Choosing the same voice actor for Rafe from Uncharted 4 (Warren Kole) was the best decision they could make. Even in Uncharted 4, he's initially an ally until later on in the game when a rivalry comes along. Warren Kole is born to play roles like this. I can't help but love Graves
This man literally played rafe in uncharted
People say his betrayal was executed poorly.
Understand, man was always in it for his own group and himself.
He’s a PMC.
Doesn’t care much on being good, just on being paid and doing his job to a T.
He never shows true hatred to the 141, even in his betrayal scene, he wanted them to move on. He wanted them to leave without shots fired. He didn’t even start their fight in that scene.
Showing that he wisely chose to not attack the 141 nor Mexican Special Forces when he could had. Instead he chose to be defensive.
To add, he possibly had the choice to kill the Mexican Special Forces if he wanted to. Instead he chose to let them live and probably wait till their business was over with Shepard and their current operation to release them.
To me, not even a bad guy. Yeah, he betrays them under ORDERS that he always takes seriously. When he was ordered to care for the 141, he did, so when he was ordered to take over the operation entirely, he did. Just like his character has always been. Never a moment of personal hatred or grudges that appears out of no where.
He’s just another man in the cog of modern warfare. That’s most likely how he views himself and figures that’s fine. Hence everything within his character’s choices.
TL:DR, his character makes it sensible to his betrayal, not even close to random.
Yes it makes sense why Shadow betrays 141, the contention I've seen most is it has no impact other then giving the player more goons to shoot at. In the 2009 game Shepherd himself kills two 141 members, and almost kills Price and Soap. In the new game Graves acting on behalf of Shepherd fails to kill any 141 members, and Shepherd lives. Part of having a good betrayal is having impact.
@@Raiders1917 The reason why no one dies is because Activision be too much of a coward to kill someone off. That's something I noticed too when playing like, why hasn't any of the 141 members been killed?
Because in the original, they all still drop.
That's just plot armor.
Graves is the best OC CoD character since Black Ops 1
A lot of people must not know what a PMC is cuz he legit is getting paid by either Shepard or the US and obeys their orders because that's where his bankrolls are coming from, still I think he could come back and maybe even have redemption
Betcha a battle pass that Graves’ll be back to be my favorite operator ;)
2:32 i feel like brother wasnt "just saying" after all
At the beginning of "Alone", I was kinda hoping to hear several of the Shadows whooping and hollering and cheering as they congratulated themselves on a job well done.
I don't think Infinity Ward knew just how much we would love this character or they wouldn't have killed him off. Hero or villain, he NEEDS to return in MW3. He's too likeable to not be a mainstay in the franchise.
Guy could’ve literally been the American version of Price.
I mean he did knew the original mission was dangerous and he wished to send in reinforcements to help his men. But Sheperd thought otherwise and that led to the events of MW2. If it wasn't for Sheperd, his judgement wouldn't have been clouded.
I was surprised they had general morshower as shepherd
"Hook, line and fucking sinker" has to be the best line the game
When it comes to bad guys, if we don't see a body they aren't dead. I'm just waiting for him to come back.
