  • We're cross breeding guppy strains for fun. A male Neon Blue guppy is being mated to virgin female Sunset Micariff strain guppies. If all goes well, in about five months, we'll know what this cross looks like.

    Hey, Kaimuki, have u ever thought about doing other types of guppy crosses other than Sunset M. x Neon B.? Like, for example, Tuxedo koi x Sunset M.? Or Tuxedo Koi x Neon B. ?

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  3 роки тому +1

      I've been toying with the idea of All-Yellow Micariff x Koi just to see what the fry would turn out like. If sort of nice, then backcross to Micariff, seeing if the red head trait can be imported into the Micariff line.

      Sounds good! Imagine red headed neon blue delta tails, or koi guppy’s with blue and red delta tails, and the really long, beautiful dorsal fin featured on the neon blue. It would be fantastic

    I like this video very much. so you are going to start breeding new strains. waiting to know what their babies look like. I kept my sunset guppy,neon blues, and other stunning guppy combined. their fries are awesome. their colour pattern is good to watch.....

    Really enjoyed the video and I hope that you might update along the way rather than waiting the full 5 months. When you develop a stain of guppies, how many generation in do you have to be for them to "breed true"? Or do you have to bring in fresh bloodlines in occasionally? Thanks for a great video.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      +Thom Lindgren I was probably going to do updates along the way, or when some aspect of this "experiment" yields something noteworthy. I've never developed a new strain of guppies, therefore I don't know how many generations would be needed. I've been working with my Sunset Micariff bloodline since 2009, taking it through 3 generations a year. I've not brought in outside genes yet. Good questions.

    hey if you don't mind me asking when summer over do you move the guppies indoors or keep them out side. I'm looking on moving and starting up all my guppies breeders outside so i can free up 45 tanks for other fish but I'm worried about the cold weather never kept fish outside other then goldfish all been setup in my fish room

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      +Alphabet Where I live, the Winters will get into the mid 60's °F. Even though this is mild compared to a lot of places, it is a little too cold for guppies to be at their best-- BUT, it doesn't kill them. Therefore, out of simplicity, I leave them outdoors. They grow slower, and gestation periods are longer, but they don't die. And when the weather warms up, like it is now, they perk up. If you live anywhere where the Fall and Winters are routinely colder than 70 °F, I would recommend bringing guppies indoors and using heated aquariums.

    If a neon blue guppy -female and a male sunset micariff guppy -male is bred, will the offspring may be same as this breeding's offspring?

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  7 років тому

      I don't know because I have not made that reciprocal cross. But I believe it would not be exactly the same because in guppies, quite a few color genes are sexed-linked. That is to say, they exist on either the X or Y sex chromosomes.

    Awesome video. Does your friend like to breed guppies too? Does he do other strains as well? I thought I saw a red one in the tub with the Neon blue...

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому +1

      +LFCooledWhip This is the same friend's house that I used for the past video on Guppy Tubs. He and his wife do just Neon Blues. The reason why you saw a red one is that his particular line of Neon Blues has a recessive red form too. It's a straight Mendelian autosomal recessive type of inheritance. Basically all Neon Blues are red fish underneath. The blue form is simply those fish with a whole lot of iridescence on top of the basically red background color. The recessive form lack the whole lot of iridescence, thus, show their red background color. Very good question.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  7 років тому

      you can place many, say 50 or so, BUT as they grow, you need to successively split the brood into other tanks. In the end, you should allocate 1 gallon per adult guppy.

      +To Kill a Chatot I once crossed Japan Blues with Moscow Metallic Blues. I can't remember which was the male and female. But I remember the F1 generation. They had the color of the Japan Blues. The middle rays of the caudal fin was short like the Japan Blues, while the top and bottom rays of the caudal was long like the Delta Tail of the Moscow Metallic Blues. So it was almost like a lyretail. I gave all of them away to a family friend of mine, and they kept the whole batch in their living room aquarium. This was in the late 90's.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      Until about 3 months, both the males' and females' bodies (not counting the tail fin) will be about the same. The males' bodies stop growing. The females' bodies keep on growing. Not counting the tail fin, the males' body will be about an inch or slightly larger. The females bodies' will eventually become 2 inches.

And if viewers don't watch to the end, search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc. don't give these pieces as high a search index- meaning they'll be harder to find. I have no other social media connected to this UA-cam channel, so I depend a lot on viewers watching these videos to the end. I hope this explains.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      +Gnar Lol Mine range from 20 to 50 gallons- I recommend these sizes for guppies. Yes, I do water changes. I have a video on cleaning water gardens or tubs, posted on this same channel. I don't use water conditioner. Thanks.

    • @helzing5114
      @helzing5114 8 років тому

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      Gnar Lol Where I live, yes, water is straight out of the tap. The plants you raise will depend on your location, i.e. my tropical water lilies would not survive in any temperate region. I change water at least once every two weeks.

    • @helzing5114
      @helzing5114 8 років тому

      I live in florida, and doesnt tap water(straigh out of the hose) have chlorine?

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      +Gnar Lol My guess is that your municipal water supply does contain chlorine. If you can smell it, the level is too high for fish. You'll need to age your water, to allow the chlorine to dissipate, or use water treatment chemicals from the pet store. Other places don't chlorinate, but they may fluorinate (for dental health reasons). Fluorine is also bad for fish.

    This is the very topic I am interested in nowadays. Thank you for bringing up such an issue. I have ten male and 10 female bşg ear guppies. I am breeding them. But, I would like to cross-breed the big ear male guppies with pure color female guppies such as full red and full black. Is it possible to have big ear guppies from those crosses?

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      +Kerim ünal By "big ear" guppies, are you referring to those strains with the exaggeratedly huge pectoral fins? If so, not knowing anything about this, I would do a test cross to see if this trait is due to a single autosomal dominant gene mode of inheritance. If it is (just my hunch), then it will be far easier to establish the big ear trait into the hybrid line than to fix the color you desire. As some color and pattern genes are carried on the males X chromosomes only, If space is a limiting factor, I would prioritize making the reprical crosses (males of you desired colors X female big ears). I'm guessing that at this point you probably have not yet had fry to raise virgin females, so maybe this should be your first step- but it adds 4 months to your process.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

    my platy given birth to 23 frys. i seperated her from the other female platy and male platy until she finished giving birth to them. i keep the frys to be by themselves to avoid them being eaten by their mama

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  7 років тому +1

      great, if you give the platy fry a nice aquarium to themselves, with filter, they will grow the best

    • @afeisha75
      @afeisha75 7 років тому

      i have to get a filter for them. i learnt that the ammonium substance from left over fish food and their poop can make them sick if it is high levels of ammonium. my other female platy still looks pregnant. she had given birth to one fry a couple of weeks ago. i guess the rest wasnt ready yet to be born. her male companion is always by her side. he barely gives my new female platy any attention

    hi sir.. why all my female guppy became agresive? the female chase the male. is that cause of temperature or water's ph? the male is same age with female.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      +wadde faq Some females are that way. Generally, it's not due to water conditions- just the female herself.

      +Kaimuki Backyard so what should i do? i want them breed..

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      wadde faq I recommend placing her in a tank with the male you want to breed her with. Place enough items such as plants for the male to hide in if the female should become too aggressive. They male will probably still mate with her. Do not place them in a plain tank, or small vessel such as a bucket or fishbowl. Otherwise, with no hiding spaces, the female will find and peck on the male to death.

    • @waddefaq4325
      @waddefaq4325 8 років тому

      +Kaimuki Backyard yes. my tank is indoor, with filter, and a liltle small dead coral at bottom.
      i dont have co2.. every time i put live plant, the plant will die. i will put some fake plant.. as u said. is it ok?

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      yes, it's okay. I'd remove the coral-- it makes the water too hard for guppies.

  • @gerardcousineau3200

    It takes more than 31 days for the first brood ! After that it can be as short as 17 days between broods !

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      +gerard cousineau Not always. It's largely temperature dependent. Although I posted this video last night, this video's footage was taken on 2/15/2016. Today is 3/13/2016, and the first of two females gave birth, 27 days later. I'll be posting another video on this. The longest gestation periods I've encountered was 35 days. The shortest 23 days.

    • @gerardcousineau3200
      @gerardcousineau3200 8 років тому +1

      If it took only 27 days from fertilization to giving birth it means that they were at very high temperature ! Between broods I had at least one female who gave birth 17 days after delivering babies ! You have to realize that is because you have different stage of gestation in a female guppy ! I expect you to live in a warm country it will explain a lot of things ! It will be interesting to see the F1 !

    That neon blue isn't pure, its set of fins closest to its head (not sure what the technical term for it is) are yellow-orangish. These so-called neon blue x sunset micariffs have a third obscure but still very much there component.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  7 років тому

      I'm not going debate the "purity" with you. I can tell anyone else that's reading this post that the Neon Blue is from a true breeding line, and it's "pectoral fins" being yellow, or marked, is normal for that strain. It's actually desirable for that strain.

      I've documented the results from many generations resulting from this original cross like in the next 20 or so videos. It's still ongoing up to the current videos I've just uploaded within the last week. I've discussed how I didn't get the results I expected, but on other lines that resulted from this cross, I've gotten some alternate results that I'm still working with. It's ALL on my channel, if you have the time to watch.
