What is being referred to as Hinduism is actually Vaishnava system. Hindu is not just Vaishnava, it is an umbrella term. Not only in Manipur, in every state in India, there are local variations. In ancient India, the term "Dharma" never meant religion. Religion was introduced by the British and since then Hindu became labeled as a religion. Hindu is not any particular type of worship or ritual. Neither is any scripture any authority for Hindu. In fact, there were atheist Hindus also like Charvakas and Ajivikas. So, there is no question of "conversion" to Hinduism. They had adopted the Vaishnava style. That's all.

And the MLA who was injured was a Kuki as their house is just behind my house and it got burned and the fire got too strong that it started burning towards our house. Actually, the fates of the Manipuris (Meitei) and at least the northern Chins, who identify themselves as Zomi and Thadou inside Chin State, are inseparably intertwined. The Manipur River flows through northern Chin State and enjoins the Chindwin River in Sagaing Region. It, thus, serves as the bloodline for a large part of the northern Chins. In return, the Meiteis' long-term survival as a nation depends heavily on the northern Chins. A vivid example: If the Chins built a dam on the Manipur River in Chin State, most of the Imphal Valley would be underwater. So, all the people concerned - leaders of both communities and the Indian government - should consider such matters in their attempts to solve the problem. And the two communities should make every effort to live side by side in harmony for their own long-term survival. Thank you sir for presenting a good explanation on the issue in Manipur, which many great media houses fail to do so as they are blinded and misinformed by the vibrant yet biased Impha basedl journalists. I would like to add some more points for the benefit of truth seekers. 1. Kukis (Zo ethnic group) are living not only in Churachandpur district (yes, Churachandpur is their stronghold), but they are also living in all the hill districts in the catchment areas of Imphal valley side by side with Naga Tribes. Besides, Kukis are living in most other NE states, though in much lesser number. 2. Kukis are unhappy with the Biren Singh administration because he has been systematically hurting their pride and self respect over a period of time. He would often openly utter derogatory terms against Kukis both in his public speeches and in his Facebook posts, wherein he would stoop so low to indulge in arguments and name callings with unknown teenagers and mischief mongers. This has resulted in the youth of both the communites developing extreme hatred against one another. The CM would hunt down any Kuki youth including juveniles, who posts and comments anything he doesn't like on his fb page, but he would always turn a blind eye on Meitei mischief mongers who openly talk/post much more inflammatory remarks. 3. In a bit to hurt/insult the Kukis further, he invokes the long forgotten and fraud policies on reserved forest, protected forest, wetland, etc and evicting Kuki villages which had been in existence since before the birth of the modern day Manipur state. He went to the extent of going to the heart of Churachandpur Town, which is the second largest town in Manipur after Imphal, and declaring the highly urbanised localities as Protected Forest, Wetland areas, etc. This is akin to declaring Vasant Vihar area of Delhi as Reserved Forest quoting some Mughal era documents. 4. On the question of Poppy Cultivation also, most Kukis especially the elites and educated are against poppy cultivation as they perceive that it will only destroy the Kuki youth in the long run. However, many of the poor and illiterate villagers see poppy cultivation as an opportunity to come out of abject poverty befallen upon them as a result of the long neglect by the state govt. It is worth mentioning here that these poppy plantations were encouraged and financed by big drug cartels and drug lords who belong to the cream of Meitei community with connections to the top brass of the state machinery. While the poor poppy farmers were getting peanuts out of this illegal trade, the Meitei drug lords (locally known as kani mahajon) are the true benefactors. The CM's War on Drug campaign was never targeted to these drug lords, but were targeted only to the farmers. The CM makes huge publicity stunts out of these drives and coniviniently used it to further tarnish the image of the Kukis. In this way, Biren Singh created a fertile ground and sowed the seed of anti Kuki feelings among the Meitei community especially the youth. The result is that, whenever, the tribals raise any issue or protest against the government on any genuine issue, the brainwashed fringe elements of the Meitei community with the backing of the CM would hijack the common tribal issue by staging counter rally and offense against the Kukis. The present Manipur crisis is the latest episode of Biren Singh's communal game and is unlikely to be the last. 5. The Valour, Patriotism, Nationalism, Loyalty to the motherland of Kukis are richly recorded by history. They fought the longest and most costly war against the Britishers during WW-I. They again fought against the Britishers alongside INA during WW-II. As a result of their constant fight against the British, the colonial power had taken many steps to subdue and disintegrate the power of the Kukis. The Independent India owes this long suppressed Kukis a better treatment and better respect.

The demand for ST status by Meities is not because they consider themselves to be a backward community in need of special constitutional provisions, but because they want access to the land, forests, and other resources in the hills.
The problem is not having so many different people. The problem is when they are pitted against each other. When the political culture is extractive and full of identity politics, so people are only interested in acquiring benefits for "their community" at the expense of others, then this sort of thing happens. In reality we are all only part of one community, the community of human beings. Actually we are having the same issues in America now. Just like India has reservations and special status we have affirmative action, which is usually seen as punishing groups of high achievers like Indian immigrants. The only solution is to change the culture so it is less about special interest and more about national interest. And to increase growth so there is less focus on dividing the pie and more focus on making the pie bigger.

Best solution is giving tribals and meiteis separate states otherwise its an unending cycle. There is big inbalance of political power between meitei and tribals which one side can feel they are being supress and other side on being on the dominant side. The centre should take serious matter in solving the matter in Manipur like Jammu & Kashmir leh Leh.
The meitei community constitute 60-70% of the Manipur populations. They enjoy 40 seats out of 60 MLAs seats. Only 20 seats for Tribals. So, even a common person can do simple canculation, and can figure it out who's the Majority and who's the minority in Manipur. Yet, they tried to play the indegenious Victim Card.
Meiteis have SC, OBC, and EWS, now demand for ST. If they happen to get it, it will be for the first time in India that a particular community will get all reservation tags. If Meiteis become ST, ST status will be defunct, only Meenas of Rajasthan and Meites will fill all the seats. Reservation ideas was and is social representation. I support their demand for more land but their approach to it is wrong as land issue was not properly resolved. While declaring reserved forest, High Court recommending them ST and forcefully evicting tribals using Police forces is only going to create bad blood. I think only way to resolve is Meiteis rollback their demand of STs and some designated lands are allocated in some parts of the Hills for the Meiteis after fair compensation of the tribals. Hopefully all these end soon. 🙏

Meiteis want ST status to protect their lands and identity. The other tribes oppose this demand fearing meiteis who are in majority and better educated will get all benefits. This has been going on for decades. The present violence is not because of this. The real cause is the recent drive by the govt against illegal kuki immigrants from myanmar who burn down reserve forests for poppy plantation, supported by the kuki insurgents. This drug business is worth thousands of crores. Taking advantage of the so called peaceful solidarity rally, the armed kuki insurgents along with the illegal immigrants attacked meitei settlements in torbung area. They burnt down the houses, killed people, raped and murdered women. This flashed on social media causing a backlash in meitei dominated areas. In any violence it is mostly the innocent who suffer. But the kukis are squarely responsible for the present violence. There is net blackout in manipur at present, but once things calm down, the true picture will emerge and people will know the truth and how reprehensible the kukis are.

Article 355 just says that it is the center's duty to protect states from external aggression and internal disturbance. It does not confer power to take over any function of the state. When they take over any function, it would be under 356 only. So far, this article has been used to give advisories and directives by the center and used as a rationale for imposing the president's rule. Now this may seem like the first case where just law and order were taken over, but we need to see the actual orders issued to be sure. could be possible that a directive was given to Manipur Govt to make that appointment of police chief. Seems there is no official notification for Article 355 in Manipur. The Print report about it seems to be based on "sources". So unless the legal details becomes clear, SG seems to have jumped the gun. As you say, the Centre issues directives and advisories to state govts whenever there is a serious breakdown of law and order, and it has happened often in the past. Same has prob happened here, no sign of state govt not having any control over law and order
NE is ethnically diverse region. So, Govt. has been careful when such issues crop up. It is the Manipur High Court that failed to do this homework. Such matters should be left to Executive to decide instead of Judiciary deliberating.

Even if the High Court gave an order to the State Govt. to grant ST status to Meitis, Kukis would have approached the Supreme Court instead of engaging in Violence, they should leave the illegal opium plantation on reserve land which is creating issues and giving Non State actors money to exploit the division. Meitis won a legal fight which should be countered legally instead of engaging in Violence.

The Manipur government is taking legal action to protect the reserve forests and control illegal immigration. However, Kuki smugglers and politicians are using propaganda to hide their true agenda and target Meities with their armed insurgents. They are protesting against the Manipur High Court's decision to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the Meities, in an effort to divert attention from their illegal activities. It's essential for the government of India and Manipur to take action against these criminals, stop deforestation, stop poppy cultivation, stop smuggling, and stop illegal immigration. Here is short summary of what happening in Manipur. The tribals are protesting against Meitei demand for ST status is because they are already availing the SC, OBC, EWS benefits but still their urge to be included in ST category portray the intention to buy land and spread around the hills, which are occupied and home to tribal people. Here the tribal people are just fighting for their rights to protect their land.

Im not a meitei nor a kuki. But the videos of the people carrying guns are definitely meitei as the language they are speaking is 100% meitei dialect and the accent is also 100% localite meitei. And the MLA who was injured was a Kuki as their house is just behind my house and it got burned and the fire got too strong that it started burning towards our house. In Imphal, they have burned 90% of Kuki’s house, and vice versa by the Kuki’s as well.
Sad thing is 2 women and 3 men were stoned death by the meitei, whereas in Churachanpur which is a kuku dominated area, the kuki women are protecting the meitei women from the angry mob.
This problem will escalate now that killing is involved 😢

Actually, the fates of the Manipuris (Meitei) and at least the northern Chins, who identify themselves as Zomi and Thadou inside Chin State, are inseparably intertwined. The Manipur River flows through northern Chin State and enjoins the Chindwin River in Sagaing Region. It, thus, serves as the bloodline for a large part of the northern Chins. In return, the Meiteis' long-term survival as a nation depends heavily on the northern Chins. A vivid example: If the Chins built a dam on the Manipur River in Chin State, most of the Imphal Valley would be underwater.

At this time of digitalization, it's best to divert ourselves from all the news coming out of manipur and also the video clips and images.
This information war will get us nowhere but only put fuel to the fire. That's why i say it's best to fact check it before we publish anything. Both of the sides are wrong and one wrong information can lead to a big catastrophe.

Thank you sir for presenting a good explanation on the issue in Manipur, which many great media houses fail to do so as they are blinded and misinformed by the vibrant yet biased Impha basedl journalists. I would like to add some more points for the benefit of truth seekers.
1. Kukis (Zo ethnic group) are living not only in Churachandpur district (yes, Churachandpur is their stronghold), but they are also living in all the hill districts in the catchment areas of Imphal valley side by side with Naga Tribes. Besides, Kukis are living in most other NE states, though in much lesser number.
2. Kukis are unhappy with the Biren Singh administration because he has been systematically hurting their pride and self respect over a period of time. He would often openly utter derogatory terms against Kukis both in his public speeches and in his Facebook posts, wherein he would stoop so low to indulge in arguments and name callings with unknown teenagers and mischief mongers. This has resulted in the youth of both the communites developing extreme hatred against one another. The CM would hunt down any Kuki youth including juveniles, who posts and comments anything he doesn't like on his fb page, but he would always turn a blind eye on Meitei mischief mongers who openly talk/post much more inflammatory remarks.
3. In a bit to hurt/insult the Kukis further, he invokes the long forgotten and fraud policies on reserved forest, protected forest, wetland, etc and evicting Kuki villages which had been in existence since before the birth of the modern day Manipur state. He went to the extent of going to the heart of Churachandpur Town, which is the second largest town in Manipur after Imphal, and declaring the highly urbanised localities as Protected Forest, Wetland areas, etc. This is akin to declaring Vasant Vihar area of Delhi as Reserved Forest quoting some Mughal era documents.
4. On the question of Poppy Cultivation also, most Kukis especially the elites and educated are against poppy cultivation as they perceive that it will only destroy the Kuki youth in the long run. However, many of the poor and illiterate villagers see poppy cultivation as an opportunity to come out of abject poverty befallen upon them as a result of the long neglect by the state govt. It is worth mentioning here that these poppy plantations were encouraged and financed by big drug cartels and drug lords who belong to the cream of Meitei community with connections to the top brass of the state machinery. While the poor poppy farmers were getting peanuts out of this illegal trade, the Meitei drug lords (locally known as kani mahajon) are the true benefactors. The CM's War on Drug campaign was never targeted to these drug lords, but were targeted only to the farmers. The CM makes huge publicity stunts out of these drives and coniviniently used it to further tarnish the image of the Kukis. In this way, Biren Singh created a fertile ground and sowed the seed of anti Kuki feelings among the Meitei community especially the youth. The result is that, whenever, the tribals raise any issue or protest against the government on any genuine issue, the brainwashed fringe elements of the Meitei community with the backing of the CM would hijack the common tribal issue by staging counter rally and offense against the Kukis. The present Manipur crisis is the latest episode of Biren Singh's communal game and is unlikely to be the last.
5. The Valour, Patriotism, Nationalism, Loyalty to the motherland of Kukis are richly recorded by history. They fought the longest and most costly war against the Britishers during WW-I. They again fought against the Britishers alongside INA during WW-II. As a result of their constant fight against the British, the colonial power had taken many steps to subdue and disintegrate the power of the Kukis. The Independent India owes this long suppressed Kukis a better treatment and better respect.

The problem is not having so many different people. The problem is when they are pitted against each other. When the political culture is extractive and full of identity politics, so people are only interested in acquiring benefits for "their community" at the expense of others, then this sort of thing happens. In reality we are all only part of one community, the community of human beings.
Actually we are having the same issues in America now. Just like India has reservations and special status we have affirmative action, which is usually seen as punishing groups of high achievers like Indian immigrants. The only solution is to change the culture so it is less about special interest and more about national interest. And to increase growth so there is less focus on dividing the pie and more focus on making the pie bigger.

Meiteis have SC, OBC, and EWS, now demand for ST. If they happen to get it, it will be for the first time in India that a particular community will get all reservation tags. If Meiteis become ST, ST status will be defunct, only Meenas of Rajasthan and Meites will fill all the seats. Reservation ideas was and is social representation. I support their demand for more land but their approach to it is wrong as land issue was not properly resolved. While declaring reserved forest, High Court recommending them ST and forcefully evicting tribals using Police forces is only going to create bad blood. I think only way to resolve is Meiteis rollback their demand of STs and some designated lands are allocated in some parts of the Hills for the Meiteis after fair compensation of the tribals. Meiteis want ST status to protect their lands and identity. The other tribes oppose this demand fearing meiteis who are in majority and better educated will get all benefits. This has been going on for decades. The present violence is not because of this. The real cause is the recent drive by the govt against illegal kuki immigrants from myanmar who burn down reserve forests for poppy plantation, supported by the kuki insurgents. This drug business is worth thousands of crores. Taking advantage of the so called peaceful solidarity rally, the armed kuki insurgents along with the illegal immigrants attacked meitei settlements in torbung area. They burnt down the houses, killed people, raped and murdered women. This flashed on social media causing a backlash in meitei dominated areas. In any violence it is mostly the innocent who suffer. But the kukis are squarely responsible for the present violence. There is net blackout in manipur at present, but once things calm down, the true picture will emerge and people will know the truth and how reprehensible the kukis are.

Article 355 just says that it is the center's duty to protect states from external aggression and internal disturbance. It does not confer power to take over any function of the state. When they take over any function, it would be under 356 only. So far, this article has been used to give advisories and directives by the center and used as a rationale for imposing the president's rule. Now this may seem like the first case where just law and order were taken over, but we need to see the actual orders issued to be sure. could be possible that a directive was given to Manipur Govt to make that appointment of police chief. Do I qualify for a research job at your place by pointing this out?
Seems there is no official notification for Article 355 in Manipur. The Print report about it seems to be based on "sources". So unless the legal details becomes clear, SG seems to have jumped the gun. As you say, the Centre issues directives and advisories to state govts whenever there is a serious breakdown of law and order, and it has happened often in the past. Same has prob happened here, no sign of state govt not having any control over law and order

@Shekhar Sir, for your info: Manipuri is broadly classified into 3 groups namely 1. Meitei Manipuri 2. Pangan(pangal) widely known as Manipuri Muslim 3. Bishnupriya(Kalisha) widely known as Bishnupriya Manipuri.
All Bishnupriya Manipuris are Hindus, all Pangan’s are Muslims, whereas Meitei community people belongs to various religions (Christian’s, Hindus, a different specific God of their own).

A meitei woman telling the guys to rape a tribal woman who was caught in imphal. Still monitoring the situation but you should be careful of spreading false information and cause any more problem. As far I know, the tribals may have started it but meitei people have gone beyond humanitarian deeds and committed atrocities that even your own community is acknowledging it.

And day by day their settlement in Imphal is increasing . The most important issue is they can buy land in Meitei land but the law doesn't give the meitei the right to buy land in hills areas . That is why we demand the ST status to get the right for us not for the benefit of getting jobs but for our land

I belong to Manipur and I understand the root cause of the issue. This problem has been engineered by a group of Kuki individuals, including politicians who seek political gain, and drug kingpins who seek profit. They have weaponized innocent Kuki people and targeted innocent Meities.
However, it's important to note that some Kuki tribes, like Khongchai, have peacefully coexisted with Meities for decades, sharing history, culture, and resources. I still remember that my grandmother's best friend was Khongchai (an indigenous Kuki tribe), and I treasure their friendship.
Unfortunately, many Kukis are illegally entering Manipur from Myanmar, with the support of local politicians and drug kingpins. Kuki Kingpin with the support of insurgents plant poppy and run drug smuggling operations, recruiting younger immigrants from Myanmar as insurgents and using older immigrants as cheap labor.
As a result of this influx of immigrants, the reserve forests are being cleared and deforested for poppy plantations. The Manipur government is taking legal action to protect the reserve forests and control illegal immigration.
However, Kuki smugglers and politicians are using propaganda to hide their true agenda and target Meities with their armed insurgents. They are protesting against the Manipur High Court's decision to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the Meities, in an effort to divert attention from their illegal activities.
It's essential for the government of India and Manipur to take action against these criminals, stop deforestation, stop poppy cultivation, stop smuggling, and stop illegal immigration. We must identify the true enemy and protect both indigenous tribes from harm. I urge the government to protect us from these armed insurgents, who are true terrorists fleeing from Myanmar.

Here is short summary of what happening in Manipur.
The tribals are protesting against Meitei demand for ST status is because they are already availing the SC, OBC, EWS benefits but still their urge to be included in ST category portray the intention to buy land and spread around the hills, which are occupied and home to tribal people.
Here the tribal people are just fighting for their rights to protect their land.

But then why are the economically superior Meeteis now demanding ST quota? Aren’t they going against their own argument?
Not just Meiteis, a lot of very well to do communities like Patels in Gujarat are demanding reservation for a number of opportunistic reasons.
