They said they cut this song because they cut Aladdin's mom out of the film. I don't think that's a good enough reason because he could have been singing to his dead mother - I think that could have been even MORE impactful!
I suppose, although a big part of the setup for the song that they left out was the explanation for the ring. She gave it to him to sell so he could hopefully do better for himself and he finds that he doesn't have the heart to sell his mom's old wedding ring so he slips it back on her finger while she's sleeping.
It's because Aladdin was rewritten several times. Originally the film seems to be about Aladdin trying to bring honor to his mother since his urchin behavior was not honorful for her. This song, the scenes of Humiliate the Boy song and some scenes including this one which appears in this video show clearly that was about it. But this was not interesting for Disney producers in that time and they wanted a more "attractive" plot. So when they decided to put Aladdin as an orphan street rat who just wants to prove everyone that he's more than this and to live in the palace, a dream that shares to Jasmine's goal who before was not really important before. This decision made Aladdin's mother lose her importance in this new plot so they decided delete her and since this song (Proud of your Boy) was about her, loses its importance too that eventually was dropped from the film. But producers really loved this song and it was unforgetful to them as it is clearly show in this video. It's indeed a shame a beautiful song lose its importance in the film.
iHeart Gaming and Whose Line Actually it is in the live action film. If you listen closely to the background music at the beginning when Aladdin first goes into his hut, a short Proud of Your Boy motif plays and leads into One Jump Reprise, and again at the end of the film after Aladdin exits the palace and is going back to the streets a more obvious and extended Proud Of Your Boy motif plays
@@NaterAnimater I was just looking this up because I thought it sounded like this song. Thanks for confirming it for me, super sweet that they added it. Do you think when she plays the instrument in his home it's part of it as well?
It's raw and filled with emotion, and I love it. As much as I've heard and appreciated Clay Aiken's cover, I feel nothing when I hear his version. Alan Menken's is the one that really makes me cry every time.
This song was written by Howard Ashman when he was dying of AIDS. I can't hear it anymore without completely going to pieces. It should DEFINITELY have been kept in the film. I'm SO SICK of Disney always changing things to keep things happy. LIFE isn't always happy. And this is the best song in the score. Period.
They wanted this song in the movie badly. Everyone did. The issue was that the story as it was with the mother was not working. I’m sure they tried to keep it. Why else would they bring it back for the Broadway version? The song on Broadway is a little awkward, but shut up it’s pretty!
I still think they could have kept it. Perhaps have the movie open with a young Aladdin stealing food for his mother who is sick and dying, she berates Aladdin angrily. Then years later, his mother has passed away and an adult Aladdin mourns over her grave while performing the song before his stomach growls and he makes his way to the bakery stand. But that's just my thought.
I second that! It could have worked. I also imagine having him sing it after he gets the lamp but there does need to be some connection for him feeling that way. (Idk just a thought)
Or just keep a simple version, where he has run away from home and won't come nack until he has made mother proud. They reunite at the end and she tells him she has always been proud. Easy. Simple. Good for the kids.
I sang this at a high school concert once. I did it for howard. He is my hero. he wasnt perfect but he didn't give up. not on beast, mermaid or aladdin. I hoped by singing it the song would be at least someone known. to howard for gave a kitten his song, a mermaid her voice, a beast his soul, and a genie his dream. Forever grateful
I remember laughing at Alan Menken's singing when I was a kid not knowing who he was and not really getting the point of the song. 10 years later the song has consistently brought me to tears and even the storyboards move me. The shot where he runs through the ruins and belts into the moonlight is so powerful. Something about the moon across the skyline as apposed to a sunset perfectly represents Aladdin's modesty.
Okay, as much as I like the version they used for the Broadway performance, the original demo will probably forever be my favorite Disney song. It feels raw, like he's saying everything he doesn't want to admit but admitting them because he knows that he's wrong. I can't imagine it going into Aladdin the way that the film turned out, but if more people could find this version of the song, I would be a very, very happy person.
Aw, I think this really should've made it into the movie. I understand why they cut his moms character, but he could be singing this looking at the stars and seeing her face (like she died)
Howard wanted this song in the film because it's Aladdin's 'I want' song; it's the song where he tells the audience his motivations and makes him unique from all the other characters in that universe. Cutting this song is why in the film 'Aladdin', the Genie is generally regarded as way more of a memorable and beloved character (and ofc Robin Williams absolutely killing his role) than Aladdin. Before understanding any of this context, I remember loving the movie as a kid (getting all of the songs stuck in my head all the time) but was curious why it wasn't called The Genie instead of Aladdin because he was ofc my favourite character and just thought the story was way more about him than anything.

He sang it for Ashman. It was a favorite song of Ashman's and with Howard being ill, Menken was very emotional when he sang it. The power that the emotion adds is what makes this version so amazing.

i really wish they’d kept it. without it, aladdin didn’t really get a proper “i want” song (the reprise of one jump ahead is a bit short) which would’ve made his character a lot more emotionally impactful. besides, considering what a song like this must’ve meant to howard... i just feel like it would’ve been the right thing to do.
This song means the world to me. I had first got the Aladdin DVD back in 2005. I always thought I was a screw up in high school and college and this made me cry. A lot. Everything I felt was being put into words perfectly. I just wanted my mom to be proud of me and turned a whole new leaf. Sadly, 2 months later I had to move back home from college because my mom got sick. After 13 months, she died. And now this song is even MORE powerful. I cannot hear this song and not cry...
You know, even without his mom, this song still works for Aladdin. When I heard it the first time, I thought he was singing it to his mother's memory... and it's such a great song that it still works that way, too. ^^ I'm sort of sad they took it out, but that's why they have stuff like this.
I lost my mom 14 years ago and I've been doing nothing for my entire adult life. But I'm working on a book and I hope when it gets published, she'll be proud finally
I'm freaking crying, Aladdin has always been my favorite Disney character for as long as I can remember and I can so imagine him singing this and I just- ugh! *dies*
Whenever I hear this, I am reminded of a dream that has been haunting me for nearly four months now; it's a dream where I finally get to meet Alan Menken, and I confess to him the tremendous admiration and (I'm not ashamed to say it) love that I feel for him, and how magical his music (that is, the music he has written for Disney) has made my life. There are many variations on this dream, but the most frequently occurring one starts with me dreaming about the two of us performing various songs together, including "I Will Always Return" and "Don't Let Go" (from "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"), "When You Believe" (from "The Prince of Egypt"), "You'll Be In My Heart" ("Tarzan"), and "Best of Friends" ("The Fox and the Hound"). Upon awakening from the dream within the dream, I am driven by desperation to pray to the gods of every religion that has ever existed, begging them to help me find Alan Menken. Then, mysteriously, a sudden wind swirls around me, carrying with it a multitude of colored leaves (as in "Pocahontas"), and next the will-o'-the-wisps (from "Brave") appear to me, and they take me back in time to when "The Little Mermaid" was in production. (For reasons that I can't explain, this results in me seeming to grow younger, more specifically to my early prepubescent (i.e., preteen) years.) Ultimately, they lead me to the studio where the songs are composed and recorded; and, sure enough, Alan Menken is there. Upon my entrance, he looks up at me, at which point, suddenly and inexplicably, my heart stops, and I lose consciousness. It seems that I am about to die from this sudden event, but Alan comes to my rescue. Later, when I come to, I find him by my side, one hand gently caressing my face. With the same beautiful voice that I first heard on the demo to "Proud of Your Boy", he sings to me these words (to the tune of the reprise to "Part of Your World"): I know you have longed to know where I am. I know you have prayed to someday stand beside me. I know you have dreamed to see me smiling at you. And now, at last, your dreams have come true. Our hearts have been joined together as one. Just you and me, now you can be part of my world. I simply MUST find out where and how I can reach him, before he's gone forever! If you note a sense of urgency in these words, it's because our lives began 46 years apart, and I fear that any day the gods may decide to take him. If anyone has any suggestions as to where I might find the information that I so desperately seek, it would be greatly appreciated.
I was in the same boat, but now am SO incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with him, let alone meet him. An unbelievable amount of luck went into this and I simply cannot wait!
+Tailikku1 it's actually called "Gigantic" I was at D23 expo and I can confirm it looks quite good. They sung a song and it was super cute and good. This could work editing the lyrics a but for Jack. It would be awesome
Another Disney's lost jewel that deserves a lot of aplauses. I love this song. It keeps the essence of an innocent kid and the bravery of a man who wants to prove his mom that he can be better across life line. Now I ask you all: Wouldn't you sing this to your moms from each edge of the world?
She also treated me bad. But not for that reason I will not forget the fact she is my mother or I would be denying the woman who brought to the world. I am just finding the way to fix things, and I suggest to do it the same. Blessings. @@AlessiaRomanoSchiavella
Well much like in the final version of the film, in this early version Aladdin (and his mother) were very poor. Aladdin's mother was going to take a rug to market to sell to some rug dealer. Aladdin offered to take it instead and apparently the deal went bad. Now what is interesting is somewhere between going to market and returning back home, Aladdin gained possession of a magical ring (which although he isn't aware of contains a genie).
This song is a big part of the broadway show, so if you ever get a chance to see a staged production of aladdin, check it out! Or hear it on the aladdin cast recording!
I definitely understand why this was cut. It pulls the story in too many directions, but at the same time, this is brilliant. idk. Filmmaking is brutal. It was Brad Bird I think that said, "You have to be willing to throw out good ideas for the bigger picture." (paraphrased) Could they have made this work? Maybe if they put more resources into it, but they had to get this movie done at the end of the day. They learned that lesson with The Black Cauldron.
I wish Disney was bold enough to remember that boys have feelings too.

It is so sad that this song was cut from the movie. But I LOVE that the song came back in the broadway musical. A LOT of the early Aladdin concepts actually came back in the musical, like Aladdin's 3 friends. And so many songs that they cut from the movie, came back in teh musical.
This song hits too close to home for me. I want to be something my parents can brag to their grandkids about, but I'm not there yet. But I won't stop trying. Not yet.
This song could have still been kept intact with Aladdin noticing the way he lives isn't how his dead mother would want it, and he would mourn in song about how he will make it up to her memory....easy!! Well, it's a good thing this song will be in the Broadway musical next week!
I'm crying, I'm so glad Alan's version is available for us to enjoy and I feel that his is more powerful, because he had that relationship with Howard that would give him more emotion to put into this song
They should have kept this song. Sure, it would have added an extra 2-3 minutes to the movie, but at that price, they should have paid it and let this song stay. It's such a great piece, and would have added an extra layer to Aladdin's character.
Everyone wants someone to be proud of them. I wonder a lot of my passed away cat is proud of me each and every night. I try hard each day to make my parents and even my passed away cat and loved ones proud of me. My passed away cat may not be with me physically but I knows that I will do everything in my power to make her proud because she’s like a big sister to me and she’s always loved me just as much as I loved her.
This song hits close to home with me too. My brother (24 now) has had a rough time growing up, but he played this song for my Mom right before he left for Army boot camp. He has truly made my mother very proud. So, at least he had a happy alliance witht his song.

I cannot hear this song and not cry...
-feels heart slowly breaking-
NEVER MIND ITS BROKEN
It’s heartwarming knowing that so many celebrities and musicians covered this song
After reading Jodi Benson’s “Part of My World” and how she writes about Howard, this song hits different, it’s just beautiful 🥲
You know, even without his mom, this song still works for Aladdin. When I heard it the first time, I thought he was singing it to his mother's memory... and it's such a great song that it still works that way, too. ^^ I'm sort of sad they took it out, but that's why they have stuff like this.
I can imagine Brad Kane singing this song.
What about Adam Jacobs? Because the song is in the stage musical Aladdin starring Adam Jacobs as Aladdin.
Here is him singing the song in a concert: ua-cam.com/video/6DvPKXUT5IM/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
I wished they had kept this in the film as this could be a prayer for Aladdin singing as he prays to his mother.
I lost my mom 14 years ago and I've been doing nothing for my entire adult life. But I'm working on a book and I hope when it gets published, she'll be proud finally
R.I.P. Howard Ashman. I love this song so much.
With the same beautiful voice that I first heard on the demo to "Proud of Your Boy", he sings to me these words (to the tune of the reprise to "Part of Your World"):
I know you have longed to know where I am.
Kyle Fanene
Wait, did you say that you'll be working with him?! Are you serious? If so, then please tell him about me!
Jordan Briskin
People may say..
" Dude..?! Wth?! "
But I can relate to such beauty of Disneyland and this song..
I understand
That’s an interesting song, my friend.
And, don’t worry, your dream... your encounter... will come in some form or way that the Universe will be upon you.

Make her proud, Al. Make her proud. T_T
*Pats on shoulder* She's proud of him now...in Arabian heaven *Sheds a sole tear*
If Disney were to make an animated movie of Jack and the Beanstalk.Jack could sing this as he climbs the beanstalk
they're doing Giants, but that's the same people who did Frozen, and from what I read about the D23 expo, reaction was positive
+Tailikku1 neat, thanks for telling me
+danny75461 Yeah that's a good idea.
+James Farina actually that movie will have 2 successes to follow
+Tailikku1 it's actually called "Gigantic" I was at D23 expo and I can confirm it looks quite good. They sung a song and it was super cute and good. This could work editing the lyrics a but for Jack. It would be awesome
I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DIDN'T USE THIS SONG! It is so beautiful.
Personally, I think this is the best version of this song out there.
cutting this song and the subplot with his mom was a mistake. this song is so inspiring for kids and even young adults now
This song touches my heart.
I would... If only she didn't treat me so bad
This my favorite recording alan menken
This song is a big part of the broadway show, so if you ever get a chance to see a staged production of aladdin, check it out! Or hear it on the aladdin cast recording!
herd the cast recording but looking at a date for the west end
I absolutely love how they use it in the end of the first act. Is pure maestry!
I definitely understand why this was cut. It pulls the story in too many directions, but at the same time, this is brilliant. idk. Filmmaking is brutal.
It was Brad Bird I think that said, "You have to be willing to throw out good ideas for the bigger picture." (paraphrased)
Could they have made this work?
Not yet.
This song is perfect for the month of may in a mother's day.
Now I feel bad😔
I am sobbing. The feels. The freaking feels.
3:30-3:55 💔🥺😢 I still feel this after so long
I also always wanted to make my mom proud of me and I have. I’m always aiming to continue to make her proud
This song could have still been kept intact with Aladdin noticing the way he lives isn't how his dead mother would want it, and he would mourn in song about how he will make it up to her memory....easy!! Well, it's a good thing this song will be in the Broadway musical next week!
RIP Howard Ashman. You were a bloody genius.
I'm crying, I'm so glad Alan's version is available for us to enjoy and I feel that his is more powerful, because he had that relationship with Howard that would give him more emotion to put into this song
I just saw Aladdin at The Muny in St. Louis last night, and they used this song in it. It was fantastic
This beautiful song (and Aladdon's mother) definetively should be in the film 🤧💙💙💖
Poor Aladdin :( thinking he's stupid, worthless, lousy.
Imani Bey even I’ve been through tough days as much as Aladdin did
I think a lot of people can relate to Aladdin because of that.
This song make me cry 😢😢😢
I wish I could hear Brad Kane singing this :")
He did, my friend. He did.
He did. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/6DvPKXUT5IM/v-deo.html
I'd love it if this was animated. I can just imagine it. (Though with afar showing up like that would throw the movie into a bit of confusion)
Beginning of video: I can handle this. I'm tough. End of video: (CRYING HYSTERICALLY) I NEED TO CALL MY MUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish they had kept this song in the movie. Or at least animated for us fans. That would be so amazing
Beautiful song
Thank you so much for your wisdom and talent, Howard 😢😢😢
I want my mom to be proud of me
Me too.
Me Too
This song makes me cry...
1:43 "Proud Of Your Boy"
ok wow. I knew this song from a classic disney cd i have but i didn't know it was from this movie originally. so sad!
Good news: this song has been restored in the new musical!
YAAAAY
I'm glad they used this song in the Aladdin stage musical
love this song
Howard would be proud. This song is in my eyes the highlight of the new stage musical which just previewed tonight. It is an amazing song I love it
Been looking for this. Howard Ashman, the greatest lyricist of our time. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.
Nope.
1:06 That moment broke my heart.
Thank you so much for the kind words, it means a lot.
I'm so glad we can all share this song together.
Such a beautiful song... so sad it didn't make it into the movie
I want this song in the live action movie
I'm not crying, I'm just sweating from my eyes.
This song just brings a tear to your eye. They should make a re-release of aladdin but keep it to the original story that Howard made.
This song hits close to home with me too. My brother (24 now) has had a rough time growing up, but he played this song for my Mom right before he left for Army boot camp. He has truly made my mother very proud. So, at least he had a happy alliance witht his song.
