Locals upset over LAPD's "No Stopping" signs ahead of lowrider cruise event in Highland Park

- Some locals are angry over police appearing to crack down on a popular event involving lowriders cruising in Highland Park on Saturday night.
Owners of lowriders were excited to show off their classic rides during the planned cruise on York Boulevard, but said Los Angeles police are trying to deter them.
LAPD has put up “No Stopping” signs ahead of the cruising event, with heavy police presence expected. However, some drivers feel they’re being unfairly targeted and discriminated against.
“It’s very sad that they're trying to run us out of our own neighborhood,” said Tony Ruiz, a local car enthusiast. “We’re hardworking Angelenos. We don’t bother anybody. To fix an old Chevy car or any make of car costs a lot of money.”
KTLA's Chris Wolfe reports on May 20, 2023.

I rather have these drivers showing off their cars than the ones doing street take overs doing donuts
@Dave no, no, not really they meet up. But classic cars don't do street take overs.
It's a CRUISE, SO CRUISE
Do NOT PARK & get A PERMIT
Do it LEGALLY, if they know what that means.
Not me, the sound of those junk cars bouncing up and down is irritating
Keep it moving.
@Dave Nah, bro, These people are old school. The ones doing the street takeover are the young kids.
Funny; you can setup a tent on the sidewalk but you can’t stop your car on the street. Nothing like having your priorities straight
And do drugs, set tents on fire, leave used syringes by schools, defecate on public streets, haras citizens, takes tax payers money.
100%
Dude right. We need to burn our government to the ground and reform it.
They never stop the idiots doing donuts in stolen cars all high but they’ll stop classic registered cars 😅
Emergency vehicles use streets to travel not sidewalks. Showing off cars can be done at a designated stadium not the streets
They'll give ppl with lowriders tickets for cruising, but the cops didn't give tickets nor arrest any of the street takeover the night before.
I’ve seen police take away machetes from crazy people, wave their finger and say “Bad, don’t do it again” to the criminal. While taking no info down, letting the perp go.
Yeah...the police don't want that fact to come out
Side shows are da bomb!!
So they allow street takeovers but not a lowrider event for the old guys going 30 miles an hour?
I believe they should be able to cruise but the city doesn't want a situation to get out of hand, you get those young people who start acting up and doing stupid stuff then take away police calls when something on the other side of town is going on and the police need to be called for that too. That's what the permits are for, they could still cruise just not park.
Only an idiot says police allow take overs. Saying that tells me there smoking left overs
@@Ap_twsh Nah
No,they don’t allow it. They allow them to sign themselves and their parents up for camp.
This is like the least problematic part of the car culture.
LAPD wants to say NO Chicanos or Latin X in Highland Park as it’s turning White!! LAPD wants Highland Park to have Art Galleries and Gay Bars
💯
Correct, these guys are not doing street take overs burning rubber donuts, etc. Just showing off their custom cars /pride and joy. The shot of the Mongols is another story tho.....👊😎🤘
@@2wheel_freedom The Mongols shot seemed so outta place, but it also explains why LAPD suddenly got weird imo. Assuming it was actual footage and not stock.
Low riders are rad. Not even remotely close to the same culture as those moronic idiots doing street takeovers.
The streets were built for cars - the streets were paid for by drivers.
As long as the drivers don't bounce their junk and break the street law 😂
@ezaf it's America. They have the freedom to bounce their cars on the streets.
I didn't know about this lowrider cruise event, and just happened to be driving along York Avenue when it was happening. It was fabulous eye candy, and traffic moved along just fine!
CRACKDOWN ON LOWRIDERS BUT CAN'T CRACKDOWN ON SIDESHOWS
Where do you think the concept of SideShows originally came from???
@@hught6885you must be dumb 😅
I'm from Chicago I stand behind the lowriders I think they have every right to show off their beautiful cars because you know something I would rather them show off their cars then fight with each other
LAPD has had it in for the lowrider people for a long time, instead of actual criminals
Racist bs by LAPD
So let me get this right you guys are trying to force things on cars that are going slow and stopping yet The ones that are doing circles and burn out in the middle of intersections. It’s no issue???. Smh
So true!
What the heck. We did it in the 50s, and it was fun. Sounds like good people. Don't put everything in one basket. Takeovers can be dangerous, but this is just cruising.
They stopping something that doesn’t affect anything but can’t stop burn outs 🤦♂️
This is a part of our culture! make it a parade next time! I'm sure they could work something out. Those lowriders are works of art and deserve display.
This is gangster gang banger culture. This is not representative of the Mexican culture, this is a subculture. I am Hispanic and these people do not represent me, they are a disgrace to all Hispanics. I am a law abiding citizen, gangs are not my culture!
Take your culture back to mexico
they banned squat trucks...
Honestly, as long as they're not gonna do donuts or street takeovers that end in riots, I'm fine with it.
So true but thanks to the takeovers everyone else is paying for it
I believe your terms to be reasonable and acceptable.
That part but also .. pish posh
Ha! Classic car owners would never! They treat their cars better than most people they love lol 😂
Have you ever seen anyone do donuts in a low rider?
No gangs members and Mongo's passing by
So the sheriffs can’t pass? They’re also a gang
@@themarathoncontinues2289 LoL 😂
LAPD is clearly sending a message. This is payback from all the street takeovers. If they can’t stop the takeovers, they’ll stop the highland cruise.
The cops do not realize they are not at all connected.
One is stupid people doing stupid things.
The other is harmless fun and comradery.
Like the one dude said, "Even a lot of us go to church!"
@Dave they are not most street takeovers are done by young kids who don't have a father at home.
Old Cars are a BIG part of our City of LA & across the Country.
Beautiful old cars & very expensive, the Drivers, drive with Pride & take care of there Autos.
I know I will ! I will never buy an electric car or any other new car , just classics for me !
I like how they swooped in with the sign! Cruising is not a crime!!

You know that “the low, ri, der, is a little higher” song was playing somewhere in that crowd that day 😎
Chicago "Saturday in the park"
Do it tomorrow night, they can't post the signs without proper notice F@#$ 12 !
Typical LAPD always harassing the easiest victims rather than the outer law of taking over Los Angeles streets and damaging. Why are they bothering these peacemakers that just want to park their nice vehicles
Organizers just should have applied for a parade permit. Flip sign they can just start after midnight... Or do it on Sunday.
Car meets (tuner culture) don't have permits either, they just ask the property manager permission and even then they rev their motors and start fights + racing
There's fights, gunshots, property damage and accidents in street takeovers and the police have done very little to reduce those activities
What would they rather? That or a family oriented groups gathering, almost zero problems are started, most mature and respectful people youll meet. They rather them going back to gangs and killing each other because God forbid, heavy traffic in a already heavy populated city the hell with that! 😂 drive up the 5 fwy and tell me how long it takes u to drive just 5 miles ⏲️⏳️ stop this already. National city had a similar problem they're just gonna find a way to make money off of it they don't care about u and I
@@anaheimauthentic5099 for all your whinny karen dissertation... It doesn't solve the the problem.
If you want to have a parade, street fair, any event for any group, you just need a permit. This also means that you need to have organizers, entrance fees, a beginning and an end to the event, projected number of attendees etc.
This means that the city can have notice, police and fire can have extra people on hand for the public event, local traffic and residents will know beforehand. This makes it a much more enjoyable event for everyone. It also means that when you're cruising you can make a full loop up and down and everyone can see your car from all angles. Then it would be smarter for terminated somewhere. Then they could have judges for different classes prices for those who participated and paid the entrance fees. Local businesses can contribute since you are actually bringing customers to their locations... It's a win-win-win and everybody is happy.
The problem with car and bike culture if they don't like to play by the rules. They will have meetups and overwhelmed any given area. Way too many people for the amount of police that are on shift, traffic disruptions, violence, and the local communities and businesses are just supposed to deal with it.
There's a right way and a wrong way to go about doing anything. With just the smallest amount of organization, the car culture can beat City governments at their own game.
@@bsrcat1 whiney Karen dissertations than proceeds to prove everything I just said 🤣 the violence isn't with lowrider meets just as I mentioned. And if ur going to start somewhere start in the tuner/take over scene. Why start with the least problem causing meets 🥱
If u don't like it move outta LA simple as that. It's like someone complaining about their dem state but choosing to still live there 😭😥😢😓
@@bsrcat1 what??? For a public event you don't need a permit. Do you need a permit to have a birthday party? Or to rent out the local civic center for an event? No, no you don't. The car show is usually started when guys get together downtown show off there cars. Then year after year they bring more people. It's a public event where cars park on a public road are not judged, and don't make any profit. It's just for people to show off. It's like me taking a 1956 ford Fairlane town sedan down town parking it and behind me parks a 1964 Chevy Nova, a 1969 Cadillac, and another classic car. Should I be fined if we have the same interest and decided to meet up the following year with more people? No, I should not because we are all people with the same interest showing off in public. That's a public event.
Yup in Northen California there are many small town's that file for permits it's usually car club's that get together and file for a permit every Friday or what ever date they are going to meet down town to show off there car's truck's or what ever they are going to show. All the store owner's like the people there because they get more business on that date than they would on a regular weekday. Some time's they even have live band's or a DJ playing music. People bring there chairs and kick back.
Right now every year Petaluma Cal puts on GRAFFITI Night 50th anniversary for the movie Amrican Graffiti 1972 so this year is a special day. They have a live band food venders dress up like the 50's. Yeah if you have never been that's a pretty cool event. Like the whole town is on board with the Cruising. The crowd of people are really great to.
We had to go through this back in the 70's, 80's, 90's....
Evidently, the cops never learn.
From the east coast..hats off to the men and women who keep those old sleds alive.
It's always been a problem when it comes to LOWRIDERS.. I will always be proud of my cars and what I do. LOWRIDE ALL DAY..CRUISING IS NOT A CRIME...
Need a permit to cruise You already have the permit to cruise when you paid your registration fee for the year And why don't the LAPD start enforcement of having to have business and health permits for illegal food venders
Typical overreach and abuse of power. You cant punish everyone, just because theres a possibility of something bad happening.
I support you guys 100 percent. Law enforcement should support it.
The police need to relax. It’s only one night people will promise to behave.😁
Just leave them alone, what the Hell.
We used to cruise Hollywood, and Whittier Blvd.'s back in the 70's, and those are still popular cruise streets. Why are they disallowing this cruise? Seems stupid to this 62 yo as there are a lot more problems when you have people coming from all over cruising in anything that has 2, or 4 wheels! This is an organised event with classic cars so people can come see the cars, and owners can show their hard work off! Seems offensive, and backwards to me. 🤦♂👍😎✌🗽
The city requires a permit for events. It's not a big ask.
@@theotheleo6830 Yeah, but as I stated, we used to cruise back in the day, and it's no different now, they're still cruisin the streets with no permit required? This is basically the same thing, people cruisin, stopping at the fast food joints hanging out, parking along the street to see the cars, and action. Absolutely no difference, and actually brings business to the area. I'm not certain what a permit involves, how much money it's going to cost for an event like this which is free any night of the week, mainly on Fri & Sat, but if it's a few $100, then maybe, but I have a feeling there's more involved than there appears to be or like you said, and I agree, why wouldn't they just get the permit? 👍😎✌🗽
They dont want people to park, not cruise. I believe they should be able to cruise but the city doesn't want a situation to get out of hand, you get those young people who start acting up and doing stupid stuff then take away police calls when something on the other side of town is going on and the police need to be called for that too. That's what the permits are for, they could still cruise just not park.
@@Ap_twsh Back in the day, the 70's, we'd just cruise, but on occasion stop at one of the fast food places. One time when we stopped, I think it was Jack in the Box, I was arrested for curfew, and my dad was PO'd at the police for getting him out of bed to come pick me up, and it wasn't the only time. I could have been doing worse things, than cruisin, and eating fast food! I don't think anything has changed, some park, most just cruise, and the problems associated with that are what they are then, and now. They can't control it when it's an everyday thing, mainly Fridays, and Saturdays. But, they do want to control it when it's an organized event that is really no different than any other cruise night. I'm not certain what parking problems would exist as these people are mostly hard working people who either come to show off their car, or just park, and check out the passing cars. Just like any other night on any blvd, or strip. ✌😎🗽
Exactly back in the 70s on Whittier Boulevard when we used to cruise it was not just to show off the cars but to hook up and it was gang-related which was more dangerous then just a car event.
these guys seem cool. give them the permits they need
They need to apply for it.
Then it has to be approved by the city council. When this happens, EVERYONE WILL BE DEAD!!💀
I guarantee you if this was held in skid row or a middle of downtown LA they wouldn’t be doing anyThing about it
When is the LAPD allowed to put up road signs with chicken wire. Sue the LAPD in federal court for this stunt!
Those hipsters that gentrified that town are the ones complaining ☝🏼 These has been going on For years

Beautiful car’s allow it
the cars are not the problem...did you see the motorcyclist cruzing ? they are the Mongols...they are bad news much of the time .
@Alex Are you talking about LA Confidential? His streams are 🔥 and never any drama.
Mongols and LA sheriffs are both gangs but only one is looked down on
This is nothing new. They did this in Phoenix 30 years ago. No stopping and if you drive by more then 3 times, you will get a ticket.
It’s funny they try to enforce the law on these people, but they never do anything about Skid Row and how disgusting downtown LA is 😂 good job LAPD seriously why don’t you go find a better job to do

All they do is eat donuts and give tickets for tinted windows
@@rhuttrho88 are you dense? These people as in the people doing the car cruise. Who else could these people be?
@@mhaas281 I am fairly sure that rhuttrho88 just wanted to point out that the words "these people", and more commonly "those people" have been historically used in a derogatory manner towards members of other races. Just as it was pointed out to me that the old police vehicle name I had used needs retiring "paddywagon".
Give them a permit. These cars and culture should be celebrated.
Live in highland park like 30 years ago.. seen my first lowrider on Figueroa street (rose parade)..and been lowridering since then..we stand by our lowrider familia...💪💪
So why not just park somewhere to " show off " your cars ?
Good question.
Exactly. They are connected to the street takeovers.
This is ridiculous. LAPD has no imagination.
Yeah go after the good guys 😡😡🤬🤬🤬
I rather have people cruising rather then the recent take overs that are burning rubber and causing accidents, damages, and deaths.
They need to move their event the local LAPD precinct parking lot.
least problematic car meet in america... its preplanned well enough the police were able to attempt to stop it. meanwhile the ones i'm used to JUST HAPPEN OUT OF NOWHERE WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING for the car loving community... plus its a "cruise" event... the ones i'm used to are more like "lets see how much we can burn out our tires in 10 minutes" events
" HiTTING SWITCHES 4 THE B@TCHES " 🤣
So where is the point when we stop following the law? Or is it too late to ask?
Robocop has entered the chat
"What was that?"
To that end I say what does it matter when the cops pick and choose what laws they want to enforce anyway. They'll be super strict on something as small as this but then the sheriff will go on national TV to tell you what laws he's not going to enforce and they're always bigger than this. Remember during a public health crisis we were ordered to do certain things and the sheriff said he would not enforce those laws or rules. My point is you need to enforce ALL of the laws and not pick and choose based on your personal preferences.
Steel looks good i love classics.
They probably want them to pay a fee, permits, etc. All about the money.
No permit is needed for the sideshow since is BLM culture.
The cars are beautiful!!! I don’t see a problem
Cuz it sucks to be stuck behind this crap.
These OG’Z need to talk to these youngsters it’s because these youngsters causing a lot of problems with theses sides shows in the middle of intersections
The youngsters won't listen, they don't care
Noting makes sense in Los Angeles. Very stupid policies, ran by stupid politicians and leaders..
you fine homeowners for not mowing lawns but you let the homeless loiter the streets
Wait until they put up stop signs next to them. They will get your money no matter what it takes
It should be allowed at least once a week vs street take overs
If you’re homeless and using illegal drugs and crapping on the sidewalks they leave you alone.
The sign does say Saturday Only, make it on a Sunday. Simple fix
I don’t understand what the big deal is about people driving their classic cars lol I’d rather have people driving too slow than too fast

Highland Park isn't what it used to be and for this reason, there shouldn't be a problem allowing this lowrider cruise to happen. However, it doesn't help when you see groups like the MC show up, which is likely a reason they are cracking down.
HP is not what it used to be is because it was gentrified. I can care less about hipster wokesters but I must admit that the area is safer because there are less latinos. I'm guessing half the people in that area don't want that riff-raff around anymore. I personally wouldn't mind seeing this event moved to South LA.
@@twczzkm Gang violence had already been on the decline. The reason hipsters started moving in was precisely because it had become safer. That's the screwed up part, people complain about violence in inner cities even though a small segment is responsible for it, and when the community gets a handle on it and crime decreases, suddenly the working class people get forced out and it becomes gentrified, and those displaced people then have to move to a less desirable place and the pattern repeats again.
@@californio1850 I disagree with you. I grew up in the North East and as far as I could tell it only starting getting better when the gentrification started. Let's be clearly, NE started getting gentrified because is was a cheap area to buy. However, if you're from the area, I wouldn't mind knowing what's your take on the matter.
Cruising isn't stopping. If cars stop and block the street, nobody else can cruise.
Why they don’t try to stop the cars making donut in streets.

Sideshows are a danger to people, lowriders drive slow and show their cars, they are a piece of art.
Laws are just opinions now.
What they need to do is do more to stop them cuhs with they’re “carshows” where people actually be stupid and get hurt.

If cars cant stop then make sure all those LA pedestrians will be held accountable for crossing when thwy shouldnt cross
Priorities I SoCal are definitely upside down. With all of the serious crime issues facing the area, they really feel that stopping cruising is that important. They are shootings at birthday parties, funerals, and many other places where people gather and they don’t ban any of those. It seems to me that they should put their resources to stop street takeovers where the danger to the public is so much greater than with people simply showing off their classic cars by cruising around at 20 mph. This kind of over policing makes me sick.
Solution = Permit
Looks like they don't want them in the area cruising for some reason.
