- The funerary bundle of the Señora de Cao, headdress ornament and six nose ornaments, found in what is now the El Brujo Archaeological Complex, c. 400 C.E., Moche (Museo Cao, Magdalena de Cao, Peru)
A conversation with Dr. Sarahh Scher and Dr. Steven Zucker
The Señora De Cao!!! I love the Moche Civilization ❤️ I hope to learn more about them
Hope there are more videos on them soon!!!
GIRL POWER!!!
The fact that they could produce gold leaf indicates the level of refinement their artisans had achieved.
Moche are like the Maya from the Andes, and are severely understudied. Sad.
I'm beginning to realize that.
their portraits are so realistic and their metallurgy and monumental architecture are evidence of their great civilization.
Very cool. My wife was adopted from Lima in '80. But she's been able to trace some lineage to Moche. They clearly mastered not only alloys but symmetry. All those nose rings are cut nearly to vertical line of symmetry. Makes me think heat was involved in shaping the polygonal walls.
huge anti seismic pyramids, realistic portrait in ceramics, sophisticated metallurgy in gold and silver, copper weapons, priesthood, powerful rulers, warrior games, seamen, one of the great civilizations of ancient Peru.
I love how many different cultures you touch on, and always with respect for them all. We could all learn a thing from that alone.
Thank you for all you do, I’m excited to see more non European centric art.
History is so nostalgic.
love your videos
Moche culture! One of the greatest of America, thank you for this video about la Señora de Cao undoubtedly an important personage during her lifetime.
Our pleasure!
Fantastic
based on what we know about the Lord of Sipan, she was indeed a ruler. The Shamanic head dress, the scepters are all evidence that she was a priestess ruler of the Moche people. The iconography in the ceramic of the Moche depicts, the Shaman as rulers, being carried in golden litters and performing gruesome ritualistic acts. The parallels with the Lord of Sipan are clear.

beauty
*If Egipt has its Cleopatra, the Whole America has The Lady of Cao 🙂 And we have her tomb as proof her existence and power* 😎✨✨
🔥
Full frontal crab is a perfect phrase
I've never seen a nose ring quite like these! I wouldn't even call it a ring, but I can't think of a better name, lol.
This is a reminder that no matter how important we are in our day, we will all answer to time.. This woman was buried with objects that indicated how progressively powerful she was, but look how little we know of her... Would it matter if we knew more?
Anyway, I love the detail on the nose ornaments - much better name! - later in the video. The designs are beautiful and the 80's gaming reference was hilarious. 😂
Thats odd about the blur (Beth here). It looks fine to me... just checked. Odd!
It's fine now for me too... I tried it multiple times to be sure, but I guess it was a stubborn - and strangely specific - lag. Whoops! 😅@@smarthistory-art-history
that jazzy outro tho.
Awe man! I wish I could come across one of these nose rings.
