Gallant's greatest pop success came when she teamed up with producer and manager Ian Robertson for the 1976 album Are You Ready For Love, which featured the disco hit single "From New York to L.A.". The latter takes its melody from Gilles Vigneault's song "Mon Pays" and the English lyrics were written by Gene Williams. Gallant later recorded Mon Pays with its original lyrics by Vigneault.
From New York to L.A. was Gallant's only recording to attract notice outside Canada; it became a hit in many other countries such as the UK (#6), Ireland (#5), Australia (#10), the Netherlands (#15), Norway (#7), South Africa (#5) and Sweden (#17).[7] Sugar Daddy and the album's title song Are You Ready for Love are also Top 20 Canadian hits that helped Gallant to win Juno Awards for Best Female Vocalist in 1976 and 1977. Although overlooked by radio in the U.S., From New York to L.A. and Sugar Daddy were played in American discos. Gallant followed up in 1977 with her French album Besoin d'amour, which includes a French rendition of Sugar Daddy. On the strength of her disco success, Gallant hosted her own variety show, The Patsy Gallant Show, which was produced and broadcast on CTV in 1978 and 1979.
Gallant released the English album Will You Give Me Your Love and the French album Patsy Gallant et Star, both in 1978 on Attic Records,[8] and has a hit with Stay a While With Me (Aime-moi in French); she also released the English album Patsy! which contains the disco hit O Michel. Gallant then released a bilingual greatest hits package in early 1979, which included a rendition of the original Mon Pays. The English greatest hits album was reissued in 1995 on Attic Records with new remix of From New York to L.A. as well as another compilation, Tout va Trop Vite 1965-2005 in 2005.
I've loved this song since it charted here in Australia in 1977. It's 2023 and it just got played on the radio and it still sounds good.
As a teenager in '76 growing up in Toronto, i remember this song. I also remember Patsy had a variety show back in the day.
As a teenager in '76, I remember this being played at my boarding school disco's.
Kids nowadays don't know what disco's were! 😂
And '2, 4, 6, 8, Motorway' on the 'Don't Walk: Boogie' album.
I heard this yesterday for the first time in... 40+ years, it was embedded in my brain from my early years and I'm so glad I rediscovered it :D
Same here. It might even be 50 years ago
Same here. 45 years ago and still able to sing along.
Strong number with memories.
Ya. Great song!
1977.
I had a similar experience
As a kid (50 years ago) I spent hours trying to learn / write down the lyrics to this song. Thinking about it now my parents probably thought I was crazy lifting up the needle off the record and putting it back down.
I used to hop around in the living room with my Mom to this song .. god I miss those free times
Me too! This was our favourite song when I was a child.
This brings back really good memories. She's so adorable and such a beautiful voice!
A strong, yet subtle vocal performance. Great timing. So in tune!
I haven’t heard this song since the late 70s and I’m glad that I found it
This was one of the first songs I learnt to sing in english as a 3 yr old migrant from Argentina ..hearing the words as an adult, I obviously had no clue what I was singing. I still love, love this song 💖
I lived around the Toronto area. I remember hearing this song on the radio in August 1976. It was a big song in Canada, but it was never a Billboard Top 40 hit. Regardless, I truly love it ❤ 🎵🎵
Top 10 in the UK. Next biggest singles market..
I too remember hearing this song in 1976 in Toronto.
Wish there was a button to push that would whizz me straight back to the 70s...I would push it without hesitation!🙂
Every so often, this song randomly pops into my head.
Shout out from South Africa. I still have my original South African 7-single pressing. One of my favourite disco tracks of the 70s!!!
lovely song and great memories..1977, brill!
A forgotten Disco Classic. Patsy Gallant - what a star, what a voice.
This year I heard her song several times on the radio. So, in my opinion, not forgotten at all.
Performers from the past didn't always get the recognition or celebrity they deserved.
Patsy Gallant was a wonderful performer who ventured into a cloud of obscurity.
I hate when that happens. She had such a clear voice, probably too modern for her time.
Patsy's life changed into a theatre performer...she spent a decade in Paris doing shows like Starmania, the big Quebecois rock opera. She still sings today...and releasing music. She's a dynamo.
It sounds distinctly 70s so not too modern for its time at all.
I always had a very clear memory of this song from my childhood but I never actually knew who the singer was :)
1977 This was in UK charts with Baccara's (Yes Sir I can Boogie) and The Stranglers (No More Heroes)
🙂
yep - attending the saturday morning kids programme at the plaza cinema for 15p - like most it became a bingo hall later on but couldn't defeat the covid lockdown which shut it for good - i still pass it each week and this song will always remind me of it being open.
More memories 🫠
I was 8 then and I always associate those 2 songs in my mind.
Remember this growing up in england never forgot it now we have it on u tube thank you patsy ❤❤❤
Just read a news story, electric Porsche travelled from from New York to LA with two and a half hours of charge, and this song just popped straight into my head!
Just heard this today wow that's a blast from the past 🙌
It feels like there should be some muppets involved with this.
I love this song but I could have lived without seeing her dancing haha
How have I never seen or heard this before today?!?!? This is fantastic! 🤣
Just so so good...stays right at the top of my "most listened to" list!
God I love this song!
Good song
I have always loved this song.
first single I ever bought ..
you should listen to the original, is really better
DISCO QUEEN UN JOUR, DISCO QUEEN TOUJOURS !!!!!!!
Such a great song. Really enjoy this. It was must more fun yesteryear. All is so serious now
I still think of and play this song in 2020
Good feeling song so as many songs at that time
Song by Patsy Gallant who is from Campbellton, New Brunswick, Canada, one hour drive from my hometown, Bathurst.
There was a documentary on her during the Holidays it was awsome. Shes 74 and still goung strong 💖
one of my all time favourites from childhood which has inspired me to create a DJ Edit to make it easier for DJ's to mix in...
Love it
Mon pays ce n'est pas un pays ⚜️
Classic 👍
I remember this song years ago good song
Great performance great song 🎶
Even my cat is enthralled by her and the song lol
After hearing the version by Denise Van Outen I also wanted to hear this one. Both are truly nice, each with its own flair. Truly amazing :) Now having double fun, actually!!
me too!!!! great memories.
Great song, so much better then what was around at the time.
I know it was the mid-Seventies and music videos weren't in vogue then like they are now, but this deserves a better video. Some shots of New York and L.A. mixed in with the dancing would've given it more punch.
Been hearing this song at the store I work.
Leuk oudje,, Nice old record
Great tune
SUPER!!
good memores
🌹
I think the set designer...had indulged in his fare share of party drugs!
Haha too right 🤣
Great
Loved this - was it '77 or '78 - I thought she was so hot!
Patsy, hermosa!
Great to see they reused a dr who set for the background
to me she is the original lady gaga just look at that face. wish gaga would do a disco record, madonna did when she did confessions and it was awesome
Moi aussi je trouve que Lady Gaga lui ressemble !! ❤
Che brava
Mitreißend und Poetisch
west coast
L. A.
the tune of the song is originally from the song "mon pays" from Gilles Vigneault
And a vast improvement from the original at that.
@@AGirlGivesAManHisOwnName lol. so you prefer stupid brainless lyrics....it tells a lot of who you are.
@@AGirlGivesAManHisOwnName Nowhere near the power or the poetry of the original
QE11 she was fantastic for The Tourists and then they changed their name to visit scotland
Autumn 77 in uk
I remember back in the 1970's when Jimmy Savile introduced Patsy Gallant to sing this recording. She came in a red dress even hotter than this one & Jimmy did his approving yodel. Now I realise that It wasn't Miss Gallant he was yodelling for because she was way too old for him, so he must have clocked some 11 year old girl in the audience!.
Whoh haha
Ii am traveling
I love this song she is nice looking as well
It's Joyce Kinney! :D
I think that was once a set on The Muppet Show.
There’s only one muppet here pal
I thought that actually
It's not beyond the realm of possibilities 😂.
Touch the trolley... run back to the galley...
Is this a clip from the Dutch chartshow TopPop?
What the hell kind of set design is THAT??
Shittiest set design I have ever seen!
Vintage 1970's Futurism design. 😁👍
Don't walk boogie
What's the big octopus-like contraption in the bottom right of the screen at the start?
She looks like Barry Manilow's twin sister.
That’s a bit mean lol.
Mandy Gallant
Well she did not become a star in New York or LA or else this song would have been a Billboard top 40 hit
It was a big hit in the UK in late 1977.
And in Rhodesia. Right at the top.
dome one rekuest thus song .and he want in singing this song
Huh?
She could be Barry Manilow’s daughter!😅😂🤣
Is it me or does she look a bit like lady ga ga
She sang this in 1976. The song is about a woman who has chosen her career over a "husband". She sang this when the equal rights for women amendment to the US constitution was defeated. (BTW, Patsy and I are both Canadian).
The music reminds me of Gilles Vigneault's "Mon Pays" (Quebecois French for "My Country") as its similar to Patsy Gallant's "From New York to LA".
Since Gilles Vigneault co-wrote "From New York to LA" using music from Mon Pays, there's no case of plagiarism there.
WTF. He was never asked for that, its complete plagiarism...Do you research omg.
crissement meilleur que céline
This song have been copied from song "mon pays" Gilles Vigneault. He didn't have time or money back then to sue them.
She's no Raffaella Carrà
A little cheeseybut wasn't everything like that in the mid ''70s.
Well, they certainly broke the budget on this video.
One-hit wonder, never heard from the poor girl again. Great singer & voice, dancing is lackluster. Her looks & the times suggest Andrea Martin could well have parodied her!
Hmmmm. I came to this from an article listing the Worst Songs Ever and this was one of them. They specifically called it “pretentious Can-rock”. I happen to be a Disco lover and I don’t know what to make of this. Lightweight? Sure. Horrible? No.
She can’t lipsync very well
Lip synched.
This was not a bad track but not a great one. She's ok not good though.
Thanks for your boring opinion
* rolls eyes *
Gawdawful self- celibration at its absolute worst. The aural equivalent to ipicac.
