Hey your efforts make a huge difference, adds so much. Great to all when such core data is being shared including to us. A team only gets any advantage once! Fantastic, hopefully the AC75 stays as the Americas Cup boat for a decade or 10. Let's see maximum evolution, what we've seen so far in these boats is outrageous and exciting.
And we could see today how fast the Italians learn. Executed exactly the same maneuver today. Hope they stick with this class. There is still so much to be learned about these boats.
Wow, I was impressed with the lifting and ‘leaning’ on the leeward foil for the rolltack, but to do it for a JK is really ballsy. It’s all so dependant on getting that boat hull rolling absolutely right to get maximum force or ‘grip’ as you call it onto the foil. Hats off to team NZ!
So its sorta, like weight loading a race car, where right before you put on the brakes, you roll a lil outside, wait for the inertia outside, then, pull hard to opposite, squeeze the brakes, wait for the weight to even, & accelerate through? So you can tell that your becoming a huge YT star, asking for subs, likes & bells! Getting to your head ey? Listen mate, who cares. You are not a sellout. You didn't start out asking for views. Don't let that discourage from acquiring you dues. You were just a humble channel, having a discussion about the thing you love. It is that what gives you your popularity. Passionate, factual, expert content. Well deserved my friend, & I'm excited & ecstatic for your success. Your damned right, it doesn't make a bit of difference. Genuine does. Keep it up brother. You da man.
Good spot and good explanation. I noticed the extra heel and actually thought it was a mistake an that they were potentially going over. I hadn't noticed the foils. Only ever played in small dinghies so I love your technical explanations. Understanding makes watching more interesting. Thanks.
These boats are miles apart from any other sailing vessel so its pretty tricky for us all to get an idea. The 2 canting foils are another dimension entirely. As a windfoiler, I can have a guess at where the balance points are, and how they might compensate for it, but ultimately we will probably never know just how technical these boats are.
Hi Mozzy. Thanks for this further analysis of the rolling tack technique. ETNZ are really showing the rest of us how to get into the detail and what is required to win. Roll tacking at 40knots in complete confidence of your hardware. Looking to be in complete unison with your boat. Tis truly beautiful racing. The devil is definitely not wearing Prada in Auckland!
Hi Mozzy Sails ! I think someone predicted 7-3 to the Kiwis 🥝 on your channel. I can’t remember who it was. Have thoroughly enjoyed this channel and I certainly hope you guys do it again. You guys are a pleasure and on behalf of all Kiwis, I take time out of my day to say a big THANK YOU to the 3 of you. Auckland. NZ. Regards John.
Hi Mozzy Sails! It's getting more exciting towards the end now. We even saw some real match racing, didn't we. But until now, if you guys hadn't provided this incredible analysis and background information, I think I would have hung up and stopped following the America's Cup. Huge thanks for the great work and the professional presentation. I hope this is your ticket to the ETMZ strategy team for the next AC... ;-) Highly merited!
Mozz, Great work to collect and show the data ! i think you agree with my comment about the previous video and heel angle. the 10deg heeling is also reducing the lateral wind force vector (by cos (heel deg) ~ 2% if heel=10 deg ) which during the first phase of the JK is added the lateral G-force. This is typical maneuver with ice boat/sandland yacht: OK nothing to do with AC75 but same input : speed > 30 nds, high lateral G-force, limited counter lateral force induced by the skate. Thus if possible we launch a JK by heeling up, moving the wind force vector downward, which reduce the lateral force and thus the drag induced by the skate during first turning phase
Magic update thank you. And it does make a big difference to us I think. It’s absolutely fascinating how they’re operating these boats and there is so much that we can learn.
Hi Mozzy, thanks for all the great insights into the series. You made it make a lot more sense, I never knew just how subtle and complex these machines are - but I do now. Cheers, Oly.
Thoroughly enjoy your clever and insightful analysis. Funny to see that several sailing commentators use your 'discoveries' without crediting you......good on you!
Yes, the commentator on TV One, the main broadcaster here in NZ did exactly that, the next day when Mozzy did the roll tacking video. The commentator is a clown as he called our race was done when we came off the foils. As soon as I heard him talk about roll tacking I knew he had been watching the video by Mozzy.
Great commentary, discussion, and insight. To your point, unfortunately while a bit of bad luck, Luna Rosa lost race 8 on a mistake. In the light air, they accidentally ventilated the foil (you can hear Jimmy saying “a lot of cavitation boys...”). The foils at all speeds on that boat do not create cavitation (the design and engineering ensure this does not occur), but putting the flaps all the way up to try and create lift does - thus they came in with the flaps fully up on the foil causing the cavitation and losing lift such that the new foil had no chance as they had already stalled. Dean Barker (of all folks) pointed this out during one of the commentaries before Race 9. Really interesting
haven’t notice this new way of JK ! but as said in previous comment, this is why the T-shape has a advantage, as long as you manage to control properly your kant. Guillaume Verdier (french architect, member of ETNZ architect team since 2009) was nearly given the explanation during a french interview. But he did stop before the full answer ..... In top i think ETNZ arm profil is much more asymetric at his underwater part, keeping both board down with a high turning rate can probably induce a bad angle of attack for the inboard foil. I think the one leg JK is something foreseen by the design team, but until now the sailing crew wasn’t taking the risk.
Hey Mozz Great series of videos on the boats and skippers! Can’t wait for the higher wind speed racing tomorrow (10-15 knots predicted) to see these boats in a bit more wind! I have heard at least 1 tv commentator down here in NZ give you a plug! Thanks from downunder!
Bro awesome channel and your channel is the first I go looking for as soon as a race has finished. I’m a kiwi living in Auckland but your channel is far more informative. Just going to say a few episodes back I predicted 7-3 to ETNZ 🤞👍🇳🇿
They tried to do the same manoeuvre against the USA during the World Series, they had a huge skid out and fell off the foils, so they have learnt the cant/heel trick since then to refine the turn
Yes, see my previous video on the tacking. They weren't micro adjusting the cant system back in the ACWS. This is almost certainly something they became aware of after watching the other teams (and INEOS complaining about the FCS issues).
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing this analysis. I think everyone was trying to figure out what happened in that turn at the bottom of course... question solved! Cheers
More great analysis, thanks! I'm still reeling from seeing Luna Rossa 2 km and 4 minutes ahead tell themselves "At least 28 knots before turning" and then going into the move at 27.5 rather than spending a few seconds and a few meters VMG building speed to their own stated minimum. ETNZ, once they got foiling again, were super disciplined in doing whatever it took to get 30 knots before turns even when it meant 0 VMG for a few seconds before the turn and again building back to 24 knots after the turn. The biggest risk ETNZ seemed to take was dropping to 22 knots pinching up to get around the mark while passing the floundering Luna Rossa.
Thank you so much for sharing your insights. You videos are incredible and have given me a far better understanding of just how complex and hard to drive these amazing boats are. Much appreciated.
Awesome technical analysis as always, love your channel! Would just like to say, Kiwis have been at the forefront of different (odd) things, like the Bob Semple tank. We do things differently and look outside the norm, and make good with what we have available. The old number 8 wire thing, "You can't do that, it is impossible." Kiwis answer, "why not?" So, is the new manoeuvre now called a BK?
The famous family eh Glyn. I said that to Mozzy before what you said. I heard Team Ineos and ETNZ have big plans for the cup, presuming if we can defend the cup successfully. Exciting times for 2023 and 4. Regards John. Auckland
Let's retain it first John. I think the legacy is safe with ETNZ regarding the potential next defence. You have to live in NZ to understand the way it's interwoven into the people and the way we get behind our sportsmen and women. We play hard but fair and I anticipate that is the way the cup will be organised going forward.
Thank you for putting your geek on like this. Makes the races so much more fun to watch. Played around with this Virtual Eye app a bit. Also noticed that ETNZ is running at a lower and mostly much more stable pitch. Would this help them in running the boat so fast?
Amazing video. Very interesting and well spotted! How is it the main commentators don't spot things like this? They are supposed to have all the necessary experience but just chat about the same old things with little insight.
There was so much talk about luna rossas slick moves I think a lot of people overlooked ETNZ. If only they nailed the starts. They always seem to slingshot around the bottom mark and make a big gain. Lots of inventiveness!!
Hell yeah. A physicist who knows squat about sailing watching this can totally appreciate it (that's me), it's juicy physics. Plus, if you know any sport, that high degree cant and massive heel seemed risky AF, but the sort of thing high performance sport rewards if you execute it perfectly. I think you called it well, possibly an AC winning moment.
Come on Michael, "none". of the experts in NZ picked up on this! You must be excepting of course the ETNZ team experts in NZ who developed this. Global statements seldom reflect reality.

Waiting for your next video, just watched today’s AC race. Was wondering if you, Tom & Rob, might consider doing a follow on video ‘just for fun’, that takes into account all you have seen, commented and analysed over the weeks/months, to come up with a ‘Mozzy Designs’ AC boat....how would you three design one? Might be some heated debates on some fundamentals design basics, maybe all three of you would agree. I think this could be an interesting video for the three of you to now make....especially if the rules remain largely unchanged for the next event, and there is little reason to see why they might change.....then in 3 or so years time, compare what the three of you came up with now, to the designs that turn out for the next cup. PS just spotted in your ‘Abouts’ that you have a connection with Hayling Island....I lived right on the seafront at the East end of the island for a few years when I was competing on the BWA circuit, I’d come home from work, rig up on the patio and launch out the back of my house and sail the couple of miles upwind to the main windsurf beach near the Inn on the Beach, reach back and forth with the other windsurfers there, then as the sun was setting, blast 2 miles down wind back to home. It was good course race training for me! I then moved to Southampton, but still feel a strong attachment to Hayling.
Etnz took advantage of the hull design to create a vacuum which added to the stability of the craft which enabled a greater balance in rounding the turn..?
Good spot. There is a lot going on simultaneously with this maneuver. It would be a big ask if Luna Rossa were to try this without practice so it will likely remain a ETNZ exclusive (and potentially cup winning) move.
Didn't NZ do a no cross track at some point, was watching way past midnight so probably dreaming... On the hill this afternoon! Nice work Mozzy, should be asking for a job in the next cup - real post race analysis. 😉
Another piece of the puzzle could be that they are using the heel of the boat to facilitate the turn. By moving the center of effort in the sails down to leeward, they'd have to feed in less rudder as they head up through the tack.
@@MozzySails Thanks for the reply Mozzy, my friends and I have been avidly following the cup and your videos. You've been putting out fantastic content, and it's been great to watch your channel grow and the quality of your videos improve.
Very nice. At the very beginning when boats first appeared, I had mentally assumed that turns would be on one foil, but when it was obvious boats were on both foils, I thought it was just playing it safe. The development of one boat willing to execute the maneuver on one foil suggest that boat felt comfortable from the computer modeling and crew training to execute it under the right conditions. The big question remains whether the one foil execution was done only because of the extremely light conditions and the particular sail setup, if New Zealand feels confident enough to do the same in different, perhaps stronger wind and more chop conditions.
So... what are we going to call this new manoeuvre? Pirate Pete? One legged J-K? I need your suggestions!
Petes pirouette
Most people in New Zealand assume the acronym 'JK' refers to a former rugby player and author (John Kirwan). So definitely needs a new name.
Kiwi pirouette ?
K-JK (kiwi's JK)
Petes Pole dance
You are doing an awesome job Mozzy. Really has made a difference to how i understand the racing. Big cheers mate
