He has terrible problems with allergies/sinuses. Hear how nasaly he sounds, as though he's speaking from his nose? He sounds this way in several videos you can easily find. He has touched on this issue numerous times before.
New intro for the win! Thanks for the informative episode, and well done on the digital work. Also - can we see more episodes on things like this? I particularly love mutually beneficial symbiotic relations, as well as the opposite sides of the spectrum, parasitic relations. You've done something on them, but I'd love to see more. There's also so much more to say on mimicry!
The vine used in ayahuasca preparations does not cause hallucinations on its own. It's used because it has monoamine oxidase inhibitor activity which prevents the DMT from other hallucinogenic plants from being broken down, and allows it to be orally active.
While its true that the alkaloids in Banisteriopsis caapi are primarily being used to make DMT orally active, there are lots of reports in the literature indicating that harmala alkaloids are also psychoactive. Weakly, and in such a dose that the "purging" effects will strongly outweigh the psychoactive effects, but they're still there. Though your core point is correct, they're just being used to make DMT orally active.
evilcam Yes, he needs to do his research or be less misleading on this. The Jaguars do have a psychedelic experience from eating caapi vines, there used to be a video on youtube about it.
I'm pretty sure DMT is a Serotonin receptor agonist and not a reuptake inhibitor. Plus, it has been shown that serotonin isn't a psychedelic, so blocking it's reuptake wouldn't make some one or a jaguar "trip".
Not to mention the monkeys that seek out our booze, or elephants and many other creatures that eat fermented berries. Also plenty of animals have discovered pot. It's funny and it makes me wonder why we get so worked up over people wanting to do the same. It's their life, let 'em have their fun. What's it to you, government dudes? :)
Michael Pappano Money. The government doesn't want to benefit from the addition of certain "safe" natural drugs _(like Cannabis)_ to your local grocery stores, when they can benefit ten times more, combating it at the expense of our taxes. Yay... the... _system_ wins again(???) Makes me sound like a druggie who craves everything legalized, but that's not the case. I've tried cannabis (approx. 15 years ago now) in the form of a _cookie!_ since I don't smoke and I can say, the effect _'isn't for me'_ but I'm glad to this day that I did try actual first-hand experience with it, instead of just going by textbook-"drugs are bad m'kay" and I do see how it could be beneficial to some.
+Michael Pappano You started out correct but exactly what animals have "discovered pot?.There are herbivores who just eat it, but no animal is getting high off of it. The cannabinoids in cannabis need to be heated before they become psychoactive.
I like the new intro! I realize it's probably not truly new with this video, but I got busy and sacrificed Scishow to catch up on other UA-cam videos. So this is the first time I have seen it and I like it.
Put on the captions, was amazed that the UA-cam captions apparently can't understand when people are saying "UA-cam." I would think that would be a point of pride to catch.
'"cause it turns out its pretty difficult to study the brain chemistry of a jaguar tripping out on drugs." That just might be my favorite thing Hank has ever said.
Hey! Ayahuasca isn't just beta-carboline! It's used as a mono-amine oxidase inhibitor in conjunction with dimethyltryptamine (suspected to be the same compound as the brain hormone which causes dreams) containing plants such as psychotria viridis which induces intense visions which has been used to great effect in the treatment of psychological illness and addictions previously considered incurable by conventional medicine! It's currently being studied by many of the worlds leading neuropharmacological scientists as a potentially healthier, safer and faster acting alternative to current drugs used in the treatment of psychological disorders. It deserves a bit more respect than saying it just makes you throw up!
I also find it ridiculous that he claims animals have "weird" methods of self medicating while getting in your man made vehicle to a walgreens to get acetaminophen, supporting corporate giants who care less about the risks of medicine isn't the strange route. Like, ok. lol.
The new style is really cool; instead of being the poppy surrealish style of the first season, it's more like a chalkboard, which is cool. I think this style would work better for Crash Course, personally, but this is still a neat new art style that keeps the feel of SciShow and isn't distracting. Great job :>
Cory Tompkin I think that’s only for humans because we have enzymes in our digestive system that stop DMT from getting into the bloodstream without the inhibitor in the vines shamans use
I highly recommend it if you have ever had a hallucinogenic experience. If not, and you want to give it a try, start with something a little more mild to see if you're okay with it. Even after trying psilocybin and LSD on multiple occasions, DMT was still nearly overwhelming. But amazing.
Just so you know, I guess this whole Ayahuasca concoction is the only time you'd actrually need a monoamine oxidase inhibitor going in tandem with dimethyltryptamine. You really shouldn't combine MAOI's with psychedelics or hallucinogens in general lest you acquire serotonin toxidrome, but apparently the spirit molecule is the sole exception, not to suggest I'm anything less than a huge advocate for psychedelics, with both their long onset and duration, making them less addictive than, say, advertised psychotropics which are far more toxic and easily integrated into anyone's daily routine.
Of course I might be incorrect with some these propositions, so please adjust any misleading information I may have conveyed. I know you will, Internet!
Psychedelics in general are just not toxic, like psilocybin mushrooms being less toxic than coffee. And I never knew it was the MAOI that makes you vomit, what with that whole cleansing aspect.
the world would be a pretty boring place if we all liked and disliked the same things.. why does it bother you so much that people don't like this video?? that says more about you than anyone who disliked the video.. get a grip mate

There was a guy in the 1920s called Hoxsey who observed horses and sheep on his farm self-medicating themselves off of bitter and wild herbs that they normally didn't touch, animals are able even to self medicate themselves from cancer.
Great episode! Good balance of humor, analogy, and information -- this is what humans want! One question: do we have parasites that need to be purged? I've heard people discuss this but chalked it up to new age hippity dippity but I also understand evolution and the biosphere and don't see a reason why someone with messed up intestinal biota (e.g. from processed/GMO foods) might be harboring similar parasites. I mean...it does happen in dogs, and our digestive systems have co-evolved...
I'm not an expert, but I believe all of our emotions are reactions to either an increase or a decrease in the absorption of neurotransmitter chemicals, serotonin, dopamine, etc. So fear often has to do with the fight-or-flight response, which if I remember from high school anatomy class correctly, involves epinephrine or norepinephrine.

+duhast43 If you have a bad enough medical condition in Montana, you can get a medicinal marijuana permit. Hank has ulcerative colitis. Maybe?
colitis is extremely painful, i wouldn't doubt it.
I feel like Hank is just on the verge of bursting out laughing for this whole episode. I know I certainly was.
This episode was especially funny in addition to being extremely informative and eye-opening. Well done, Hank! Well done.
Hank is stoned.

DMT's (psychedelic in Ayahuasca) pharmacodynamics are more complex than just simply being an SRI.

Studying jaguars trippin balls on DMT...Now that's what I wanna do!
How better can you do a video on animals taking drugs than filming the episode high yourself?
I'm so glad I could actually repeat what you were talking about in this show, for once! I had never thought about animals curing themselves...
hank seemed pretty high this video
I wish Hank got high...
maybe hank was hanging out with the jaguars...
exactly what i was thinking! and then i scrolled down and this is the top comment ahah
