I used to rent the 100ft snake to unclog my main line in my old house. The tree roots were murder and would have to do it about 1-2 years. Right before I sold the house, it clogged. I snaked the pipe and for some reason it kept hitting and popping up through the roof. I found the snake in the back yard and the dogs going wild. 😂😂 Did I learn my lesson- no it happened twice. I finally got it down the right way and cut the roots out.

It's true, these drain snakes can be dangerous. Found that out the first time I used one in 2014. I had rented it. I had watched a number of UA-cam videos on how to use one but still, things can happen and they did. Cable wrapped around my wrist. Used it on my own property as a DIY. Now I have the same Vevor machine as depicted in the video. Works great.

HydroNYC.. we use to use a 3’ metal bar with a u shaped end to pinch the cable against the side of the pipe to force it through a tough spot AND not have to touch it with hands… bring extra male fitting to thread into clean out so you don’t damage the clean out threads 👍🏽👊🏽

150 to show up and rod kitchen drain with small machine weather it takes 5 or 55 min. 120 an hour after that. SW MI. Lotta problems deduced ahead of time by asking a LOT of questions. I run the Ridgid K-5208 machine with the 7/8 and 1-1/4 cables. That's all I do is drain cleaning. No plumbing, repairs, installs, none of that! I only do residential, and I love it. I charge $300.00 up front before my machine comes of the truck. I'll basically use the 7/8 cables for everything except roots. If I'm hitting roots, then I will switch over to the 1-1/4 cables. One time I was in a rush and hit roots, the 7/8 cable jumped up and wrapped my glove and grabbed my pinky. Thank God my gloves are loose fitting and I escaped with no injuries! Scared the poop out of me lol! It was a lesson learned, but never forgotten.

Let’s be real that was not a 15 minute job. I’m guessing it took you 15 minutes just to unload the shit out of the van and get it up the stairs into the apartment. Much less the time to find parking and drive there from the shop in traffic. If you had a helper with you, double that time. You’re looking at at least four man hours here, I’m thinking.

Luckily the guys who taught me always told me to be extremely careful when using a snake, they made it seem like it was just a metal death hose that would tear u to shreds if u even touched it. I never got hurt using a snake but i did have a scary incident once where i was snaking a toilet drain and my snake was a spartan 300 so since it had a self feed i was standing next to the drain and letting the cable feed itself. I guess i was standing too close but the snake grabbed a hold of my pants and tangled around my leg and that shit was strong as fuck it almost knocked me over. Luckily my helper was there and he put it in reverse and saved my ass. Snaking is dirty work, dangerous work, it can be hard work because you have to carry it around and it probably weighs over 100 pounds. Most plumbers hate snaking and a lot of guys wont even do it, this is why it costs so much to snake. If the client doesn’t wanna pay he can find somebody else to do it. Also make sure if you have to pull a toilet or take apart a p-trap you charge for that as well because guess what if you do it for free and they leak after you just lost money. Oh and if you snake it several times and it wont clear and you have to jetter it that doesnt mean you dont charge for the snake, its not your fault that the drain is clogged and you snaking it was a legitimate attempt to clear it so if it doesn’t clear still charge the customer but give them an offer to jetter their line and if they dont wanna pay full price for the jetter then give them a discount on the jetter or collect your money for the snake and get out of there.

When I was 19 years old, I rented a snake to do my mom’s sewer. I had clue about the dangers associated with sewer snakes. Stuck it through the clean-out, parceled out about 25-feet and it wouldn’t go any further or back- out. Turned on machine and after few minutes the stuck snake built up so much energy, it finally let loose and started whizzing a hundred miles and hour. Had it snagged my hands, I am confident it would have ripped my hands off. Eventually pulled snake out and a fifty foot long mass of roots the diameter of the pipe came with it, most of them looked like hair. Years later, I heard someone lost a thumb using a power snake. I’ll call a plumber.

2:09 who the fuck were you to choose the jobs that you did? Uhh... the person actually doing the job. That's who! Don't ever think like that. Doesn't matter if you have a boss or not, it's you doing the job, which means that it's your body on the line! If you don't feel comfortable doing a specific task out of fear of injury, then you have every right to refuse that task.

Thanks for the post. What Im I doing wrong? Very little instruction is manual. Mines seems like it is not feeding through. I hit a dropped down and it is not going anywhere. What setting are you using? Is it CW or CCW? It seems like yours is spinning opposite direction. Any help is appreciated. Ty

Spot on regarding the serious dangers when not using the right gloves or for running it too fast also . Slow and steady is the key and now for a real story . Worked maintenance for a large HOA complex with attached units with shared waste lines . It was ALWAYS SOP that if snaking out one bathroom , another maintenance man HAD to be in the adjoining bathroom in case the snake found it’s way into the adjoining units lines . Well for some reason the guy who was supposed to be next door with walkie talkie stepped out to have a cigarette . The snake didn’t drop down into shares waste line but instead went up and into the other unit , came out the toilet bowl and proceeded to flop around that bathroom until it broke very expensive glass tile that was on the walls , broke vanity mirror and was a disaster . The homeowner had allowed access but left for work , imagine their shock when they got home and saw the disaster caused , now imagine if someone was actually sitting on the toilet . Talk about a rectal exam 😊

Here's the problem with that and the way these jobs a priced. I work building maintenance and I'm well-versed in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical. So issues that arise at my home and my rental properties I save thousands of dollars by having the know-how and the tools to do the work. It cost me $1000.000 for a main drain line sneaked and camera. It was for a rental property and it was on a weekend. It had to get done right away because the renters were having a party.
It was a matter of having the equipment to do the job. I have access to a drum snake but not at that time. I snaked many drains in my career and I avg an hour to clear a drain. What a plumber changes to snake a drain is a complete ripoff, in my opinion. Same thing with replacing a standard toilet. They charge $500.00 to replace a toilet, that's just labor. I'm NOT talking about roughing in a toilet, I'm saying just to replace. It takes me less than 30 minutes to replace a toilet. I would charge a friend $100.00 and a six-pack for labor.

Early I had a 1/2" cable wrapped around my forearm snaking a urinal in a hotel public restroom. Always wear cow hide gloves or like in the post . The yellow chemical grade gloves with big chips impregnated are the best . The spade bit is great on grease. 27 years still snaking mains in multifamily. Best story I've got is a small town drain guy snaked a ranch house 2" PVC into a grinder pump damp cover in front yard 15 out 😂

I own this one and I use double leather gloves, and eye protection. I added the clog chopper head and it's unstoppable. always go easy and never rush. Safety first. when you hit a clog, that's when you run into issues if you force it. Go back and forth gently or try a different head to get through.

yo, NYC is cheap for contracting and labor. I live out in NC now and these motherfuckers want $400 an hour to do anything like fix dry wall. Car mechanics are the biggest rip offs. If i had any expensive shit needed to be done to my car i'd drive it back to my guy in bk. Anyway, find out the going rate locally because its going to be way different all over the country (just something to factor in). Business here in NC is poppin' but nyc of course is going to be more busy with all the people that need more work done, that's probably way labor is way cheaper there because its competitive

Thats crazy cheap for that cable honestly might try it but I also hate snaking drains. I'm usually snaking root penetrations and have broken several snakes and almost my hands seferal times theoufhout the years. I try to hydrojet everywhere I can now. Works way fucking better, if the customers willing to pay for it.
