Ashrams of India Volume 2 - Auroville, an experimental, multinational township founded as “a living experiment in human unity” in 1968 by the Mother, Mirra Alfassa, and designed by architect Roger Anger www.amazon.in/...
The utopian city without money, without a government, without religion and which welcomes all nationalities. #Auroville was founded in southern #India in February 1968 by #MirraAlfassa, a French woman nicknamed "the Mother." After her death in 1973, the city developed, despite being located in the middle of the desert, thanks to the work of its residents. Some 3,300 people from 52 different countries live there today. Half of the population is Indian and a fifth is French. Together, they dream of building a new humanity, where people live in peace and harmony. FRANCE 24's Marion Laouamen, Lucile Perrone and Navodita Kumari report.
The Matrimandir took 37 years to be built, from the laying of the foundation stone at sunrise on 21 February 1971 - the Mother’s 93rd birthday - to completion in May 2008. It is in the form of a huge sphere surrounded by twelve petals. The Geodesic dome is covered by golden discs and reflects sunlight, which gives the structure its characteristic radiance. Inside this central dome is a meditation hall known as the inner chamber - this contains the largest optically-perfect glass globe in the world.
