    Talk about a small world. As a TSP MSB guy, I wish I had known you guys were going to be there, I might have been able to make the trip and match a little easier on you. I've worked in that area for years, shot the ProAm, USPSA and club 3Gun matches at The Rock for years and have gotten to know Nick, Nate, Jim, Steve and Sadistic Joe over the years. Great guys. You probably didn't meet Jim, He is usually fishing in Okeechobee that time of year. I don't know where you are located but if you can get up there and shoot the designated rifleman matches that Joe puts on, and get to know and listen to him your long range shooting will improve drastically. If for no other reason, by just by rejecting the latest "TactiCool" techniques and getting back to true shooting fundamentals. The stage in the back of Thunder Valley, shooting from the back of the little SUV is a prime example. Joe set that up to mess with the "Load your Bipod" school of thought. To give you a tiny insight about Joe, this is his daughter and the guy with the camera is Daniel Horner.

    As far as coffee goes, Switch to decaf that way you'll have steadier nerves. Reason being is decaf won't make your heart race and in order to shoot like a sniper, you want a steady trigger pull.

    SnoSeal will work way better for sealing leather boots. It's important to use only natural products and snoseal uses only premium bee wax.

    An old lightweight backpacking trick to increase your calorie count but keep weight down is to add peanut m&m's. Nuts will help curb your appetite as well (assuming you're not allergic).

    You could also have cut a lot of weight by going for a different pack, or better distributed the weight with a pack that is designed to carry the heaviest items (the rifle) such as the MR pack. Tyr is coming out with an option as well this year that should be given consideration.

    may want to try connecting yours and your teammates climing poles together to use as a tripod or quadpod. save a few more oz's.

    Oh. Forgot to mention. Not sure how heavy your sleeping bag is but western mountaineering makes a 20* bag called the ultralight. Weighs just under 30oz

    Brian, you should look into the gossamer gear lightrek 4s carbon poles. Made in Austin and are 4.1 oz per pole. Nearly half the weight of the poles you're using

    You really need to check out the gossamer gear LT4 or LT5 trekking poles. Ultra lightweight. Made in Austin Texas.

    Lighter is redundant. Just bring Waterproof matches. Check out GoConditionOne bars for compact, calorie dense food with the right balance of macros for heavy exertion.

    Any recommendations on a chest pack for hiking? I usually don't carry much, just a FAK, small survival kit, water, my camera, and a lens or two.

    If you are going for a 40-50lb pack weight why not drop that heavy ass Alice pack for a modern internal pack? That's worth 3-3.5 lbs right there. No need for an Alice when packing that light. Yes it's a little easier to attached bulky items like sleep pad tent etc but for how you're packing it's overkill and dead weight for no reason. Seems like you're hanging onto something you like instead of using what you need.

    is that a large alice, with the original frame and harness? i wonder if using a molle 2 frame and/or harness with the alice would be lighter?

    • @z0phi3l
      @z0phi3l 7 років тому

      Lighter and likely also more comfortable than the horrid ALICE pack
      Not sure why so many vets love that thing, I HATED it when in the Army and using it a lot

      Renaissance MarineTV Malice pack would likely be the way to go but cost benefit.

    It looks like your tripod is only being used for your spotting scope. In which case, you might want to look into something like the Ray-Vin Scout Compact tripod (ray-vin.com/tripods/scout.htm). It won't save you any weight over what you decided to use for the next competition, but the Ray-Vin is probably more compact, stable, and versatile for a spotting scope.
    If you want a more 'traditional' style tripod, RRS makes carbon fiber ground pods that come in at a little over 2lbs.

    Those mountain house scrambled eggs are shit! They actually feel/taste like a sponge with some kind of powder on them!! If ya can defiantly switch it out. If not have fun!

      Hunter Davidson they shit lol. Worst meal they make. If you reduce water it's not as bad but then it never really gets hot only warm and the texture is still off with almost zero flavor lol. The breakfast skillet is damn good though but can still get soupy if you don't cut back some water.

    Why that pack man? Aren't there so much better options. Like an Eberleestock or something?

    • @fishrrelaxing9361
      @fishrrelaxing9361 7 років тому

      Jared Olsen eberleestock are not light either lol. At 40lbs of gear it's as much overkill as an Alice pack. If you need ruck over 60+ lbs there is honestly nothing better. I have a skycrane optioned out to 9000ci I use for family treks and get stuck carrying gear for 2 small kids and a wife with bad back. Aka 115lbs of gear for a 5 day trip and I'm 150lbs lol. Can cover 8miles a day just as comfortably as carrying 30lbs.
