  • World famous Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a 2600 acre wildlife preserve in Berks County Pennsylvania, dedicated to the study and conservation of Raptors, birds of prey. This globally significant preserve was first established in 1934. Prior to that time hunters on the mountain, would indiscriminately shoot at migrating birds often receiving government bounties for the number of birds killed. Thanks to ornithologist Richard Pough, and conservationist Rosalie Edge, Hawk Mountain today is the world's first refuge for birds of prey. In addition to the cultural, environmental, and historical significance of the site Hawk Mountain happens also to be a great place to hike! The sanctuary charges a ten dollar fee, but in exchange for that worthwhile cost, one can experience the rugged trails and amazing views this region of Pennsylvania has to offer. On this hike known as the Hawk Mountain outer loop - approximately 5.5 miles, I was honored to be joined by my favorite fellow Pennsylvania UA-camr Hiker Dude Dad! Together we explored this surprisingly rugged landscape, and traversed the sanctuary, encountering boulder fields, scenic vistas, and rock scrambles in what I now consider to be one of the absolute best circuit hikes in eastern Pennsylvania. So please come along for a journey featuring Nature, Adventure, Discovery, and Friendship, in Pennsylvania's world famous Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.

      I was very impressed by the trails there. I thought the views, especially from North Lookout we're spectacular. Would have loved to go back on another day when the weather is alittle better. Seems like a great place to catch a sunset.

    My Wife and I are members there at the sanctuary. I used to hike up there every Saturday and Sunday when I was in my twenties (a million years ago). The Sanctuary does some incredibly important work not only there at Hawk Mountain but all over the world through extension services and support of international interns and tracking of migratory species from North America to Central and South America. Periodically they will do talks at the visitor's center where they bring out a bird of prey and talk about it and you can ask them any questions. It's really a neat experience.
    They built a .9 mile handicapped accessible trail up to the South Lookout in recent years and put in bench seating at the lookout. That became super useful recently because I had foot surgery and could get around in a post-surgery boot but would not normally be able to do any of the regular trails. It got us out into the open, fresh air and that was incredible after a week in the hospital.

      I enjoyed Hawk Mountain, the trail was surprisingly rugged in spots. Needless to say my whole experience there was unfortunately clouded by the unusual circumstances of the young lady who passed away there. Hopefully I will be able to visit again in a different season, but it definitely is an impressive operation they have there. Thanks for sharing all of that information about Hawk Mountain.

      Absolutely was a great time and something we had been planning for awhile. I can confirm that your name was brought up in our conversations on the trail about UA-cam. It really means so much to small channels like ours to get that positive feedback through comments. We're not getting paid for this - we actually spend alot of our own money- and your kind words and hearing back from viewers is really the fuel that keeps us going. I know I am ever grateful for your support as is Hiker Dude Dad.🙂

      I had a great time doing this collaboration. Despite the unusual, and ultimately somber side story to the hike, and the less than ideal filming conditions, we still managed to make the best of the situation. And I have to say that the trail system there really is a challenging hike with alot of different things to see. Definitely looking forward to getting together again in the near future and hitting another trail!

    Very cool spot, it’s been on my list for a while. It would be a difficult hike with the kids though.

    • @WALTERZOLNA
      @WALTERZOLNA  2 роки тому +1

      I probably wouldn't recommend this hike for young kids. It is a surprisingly rugged terrain, virtually every step is on uneven ground. Most visitors stop at the visitor center which is very nice, and there is a little pond and garden there I think. Then they walk to south lookout past several lesser lookouts and then to north Lookout which is truly spectacular. You could easily spend a few hours there just based on that alone especially when they have some of there educational programs up and running in the warmer months. That section of the park is very manageable.

      Yes it was extremely sad to learn about the fate of that poor woman indeed. You are not kidding about the legs part too. Practically every step of the trails was on uneven terrain, I was definitely feeling it for a couple days afterwards. I think its a great thing that us smaller Pennsylvania based youtubers are getting acquainted with each other. We all share a common interest of hiking and nature and we all have a slightly different perspective that we come from. Great to hear from you Dave.

    Great job on this video. There was definitely a sense of intrigue on this hike. I put out a video on this hike this summer. I'm glad I didn't have to deal with any sleet, but the heat was no fun either. Glad it didn't get too bad for you. Those rock scrambles on ice would be pretty tough. Fun fact: I found out about your channel through Hiker Dude Dad mentioning you. Glad you got to do a hike together.

    • @WALTERZOLNA
      @WALTERZOLNA  2 роки тому

      Yes Aaron, your name came up in the course of our hike here. We were talking about UA-cam and I mentioned to Hiker Dude Dad that yourself and several others were already subscribed to both of our channels. Your video from Hawk Mountain was actually actually what inspired me to want to go hike there. In fact, and I know this doesn't help you now, but I did film a scene of me giving your channel a shout-out during the hike. However upon reviewing the footage there was alot of background wind that drowned out my voice a bit, and I also had second thoughts about shouting another channel when I was trying to focus on Hiker Dude Dads. At any rate maybe one of these days the three of us can get together for a hike! Great to hear from you Aaron.

      Who doesn't love a good vista right?! That was my first time there, I had always known of the place but always thought it catered specifically to bird watchers, I wasn't really aware of the trail system there - which I was very impressed with. I can only imagine the views being that much better if we could have had some better atmospheric conditions, but you can't control the weather. Thanks for the comment my friend, and I very much appreciate your giving Hiker Dude Dad's channel a look.
