Tarja's version of Christine is immaculate, but fairly standard in term of how most people interpret that character and musical part. Marko's take on Phantom is completely different than most. He is usually portrayed as a disfigured gentleman, noble and righteous. Marko portrays an almost DEMONIC take on the same character. He is the devil whispering in your mind. You make a deal with him to achieve operatic glory, and he will have his due.
Almost the same to me. Tarja's Christine is... classical. nice, innocent and pure, yet a bit... dark, moody ? Perfect. Then, Marko comes in... and kills it as the phantom. He's not like Mozart's Don Giovanni. Classical, pompous and dark-ish. He's obsessed, mad, and broken. Yet, he manages to mesh with Christine, somehow... and that makes this interpretation mesmerizing.
I love Marco's performance here. His version of the Phantom is quite unique, Marco brings a more scary, spooky aspect to the chracracter which you don't ofen hear in other performances buts it is pretty relevant : we're talking about a phantom, some kind of ghost, some kind of spirit, some kind of undead so that spookiness is welcome here.

Yes this Tarja Turunen. The first singer and co-founder of Nightwish together with Tuomas and Emppu. So you know, Tarja had a very bad flu during this show and she wasn't sure if she could even perform that night. This is also the infamous show when she was fired after this show.

Nightwish had so much goth energy at that time, looove it. Tarja brought such a warm and dark tone to the band. And Markos and Tarjas voices together go so well. "Deep Silent Complete", "The Siren", "Dead to the World" (live at Summer Breeze), "Beauty and the Beast" are a few of my favourite songs of that time.
What Marco was singing at the end of the last chorus was part of the lyrics ALW wrote: "Sing, my angel of Music!", where Erik is telling Christine to sing.
I have not heard this version in a long time. The operatic power of Tarja, the guitar riffs, the drumming, Marcus amazing vocals, etc. I am sure Andrew Lloyd Webber was blown away by this version. You did a good job breaking this track down and a great reaction.
I hope you will consider reacting to TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN - "A LIFETIME OF ADVENTURE" (OFFICIAL VIDEO) from his 2014 solo project 'Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge', the graphic novel by Don Rosa. It's like a soundtrack for the novel. Different from Nightwish but as good, beautiful. One of the best songs he has ever written. It's not metal at all. Recorded in London with an orchestra. For backroung info: "Tuomas Holopainen and Don Rosa interviewed by Radio Nova", parts 1&2, only 5 minutes altogether. Interesting and kind of funny story about how they met for the first time. Vocals by Johanna Kurkela, Tuomas' wife. She sounds totally different from all three of Nightwish female vocalists. Johanna has a succesful solo career in Finland. She's also the vocalist of Auri, a band she has with Tuomas and Troy, the Nightwish multi-instrumentalist. And she has a band called 'Altamullan Road' with another Johanna, who sings on "A Lifetime of Adventure" as well. They, the two Johannas, have performed this song live too.

Yellow microphone - Tarja often switched dresses one or more time during a performance and often color-matched dress/mic/mic-stand. Since this was captured for a later DVD relases and was the final performance of the tour and before the home-crowd she went all out here. IIRC Tarja had 7 or 8 dresses for this and 5? different color microphones and mic-stands for this concert. Also noteworthy is that they played a total of 18 songs in this concert while the preceeding concerts had all been between 14 and 16 songs, so it was also longer than normal, this was song 5. Marko's Phantom is SOOOO much creepier than the original.

My favorite Nightwish song at the moment is "The Siren" from End of an Era. It is such a haunting song and is a great collaboration between all the members of the band They each have their moment to shine... it feels just so perfectly balanced.
i like marcos type of phantom.... the phantom for me always was a bad/dirty/uncomfortable person/character... so the clear tunes normaly protrait with the phantom never really worked for me.

I had never heard Nightwish perform and had only heard of them because I was seeing reactions pop up while watching reactions to Liliac and to Marc Martel. Then I started hearing/seeing people comment on them. And someone compared the lead singer of Liliac to Floor Jansen for range. It was over. I had to listen. This was the song I grabbed and was instantly a fan of it. Greatest cover of Phantom ever done imo and I think I've heard them all. They all come up short. I love Floor Jansen, and still, hands down this is the best performance of this song ever. Full stop. This is the finish cast of Phantom to echo another reactor. So I just took delivery in the last week of the complete End of an era set - lps, cd, bluray. as well as the Bluray set of Showtime Storytime. Great great musical investment. It's funny, I caught up with 7 years of Liliac last year about this time while on vacation and within another week had bought their entire discography. I hadn't bought new artist's work in decades. This was an easy and immediate "yes and give me more". Great reaction. Loved the one for Ghost love Score as well. Perfect. There is just no end of fun in watching people discover these amazing talents.

Indeed! Floor did a version in a Dutch TV Show called "Beste Zangers" with Dutch phantom, Henk Poort. ua-cam.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/v-deo.html Henk played the Phantom in the Dutch adaptation from 1993 to 1996 if I'm not mistaken.. Henk was Floor's "opera" role model, so to speak, during her teen years and it became a true honor for both Henk and Floor to actually meet each other when the 2019 season casting came around. Floor was in 2 other bands prior to Nightwish, After Forever, and ReVamp. However she was somewhat down that the metal genre was not very popular in her home country of Netherlands. Floor got the attention of her home crowd after performing and "winning" the Beste Zangers 2019 season. Many may argue that there is no actual "winner" in Beste Zangers, but after winning the hearts and ears of her people, she might disagree. Especially when many followed her into the metal world allowing it to finally bloom in her home country. Symphonic metal is now on the map in the Netherlands, and Floor couldn't be happier. Beste Zangers explained; Floor sits on the "center" couch facing one artist singing to her and 5 others around her. The artist sings a song written by Floor or one that has a special meaning to her, they perform the song in their own way. Each artist takes their turn and do the same with a different song. After everyone has taken their turn, Floor would choose a "Best Singer" based on sound originality, feeling, and emotion. On the next episode, a different artist would take the center couch and the basis of the show would repeat. Floor became "best singer" in the 2019 season. As a grand finale at the end of the season, they performed duets and of the many that were performed, "Phantom of the Opera" was one Floor did with Henk. They have been performing that song together on Floor's solo shows since. Floor and Henk have collaborated on 2 other songs for Floor that they also perform live together. Tarja is great, but you know the female opera part will be sung well. Marco stands out more, brings more colour, rage, range, IMHO, he does an amazing job, to outshine a fantastic live female singer with great range and control.

Beste Zangers is a Dutch TV Music show, where Great Artists participate and sing to one "Star artist" his/hers own songs by the other performing artists own version/twist - a great show and Floor has many unforgettable performances there (like Shallow, Vilja Lied, I don't know a thing about love etc.)
Best zangers version referenced above is fine, but it misses Nightwish musical arrangement. The drums, bass and quitar are so good. Like in high hopes and Walking in the air.

Tarja is on the first five albums, this is the real and original NW. The version after tarja has some more great works, especially the next two albums, but it is very different. Jukka is one of the best drummers around, he is on the first 7 albums and has many time signatures and just interesting tricky things going on that this is another huge loss for the band. Floor, with her voice and stage charisma has simply taken their catalogue of fantastic songs into a new generation. Ghost love score is from the tarja era.

I was always a little disappointed that the musical didn't go hard enough, and that the Phantom didn't have more of an edge, and that's what we get here. Love it. I'd love to see a full version like this. For another Nightwish song, maybe Song of Myself? Maybe Shoemaker, because the ending of that is pretty stunning. I was completely blown away when I heard that live, as it was a song I was unfamiliar with. I don't know if there is a good live version of it though. Also, I have a request! I would love, love, love for you to do a reaction to LiSA, either Gurenge or Homura, on First Take. Her vocals are world class. She's the singer that amazes me, right along with Floor. I think you would find her interesting, and I'd love to see what you thought. She sings with so much intensity and emotion. She's right on the edge of losing herself to it. On First Take, it's just her and a piano, so all you get is her voice isolated with a piano, which is perfect for a reaction from you! I can't pick Gurenge or Homura. I think Gurenge you get a little more range of what she can do, but Homura carries even more emotion into it. If you check either out, I recommend turning on the CC, because English subtitles are there. Especially important for Homura, because she says a few things at the end. During the song, it's sort of impossible to not be mesmerized by her so I haven't ever followed all of the lyrics lol. I hope it cools off where you are!
This is the line up which made Nightwish great and actually the whole growing process from a school band to the global leader of the genre. Later came the substitutes for some of them. They act the roles of Phantom and Christine too so well - just best live one can find for this song.

To me this is the greatest music performance I have ever witnessed, across all genres and schools. Marko and Tarja are genius singers and musicians, as is the rest of the band. But also, Tuomas, the composer of Nightwish is an absolute genius. All those things that Nina picked out were designed by this brilliant composer. Marco and Tarja executed them to perfection, but Tuomas was most likely the one of think of them in the first place. This band is truly unique. There can be other great bands, singers can change, but there can never be another Nightwish. To be honest, to me Nightwish was always more about Tuomas and Marco rather than the lead female. We've had 3 lead females, but I think replacing Marko's sound will be more difficult.
Tarja is the original singer of Nightwish. You should look for her performances in the live End of an Era tour, and also in studio versions of the albums Century Child and Once, in particular. She has a more opera focus than Floor and some Nightwish songs from that era were definitely written for her vocal style.
What’s next? It’s looking like time to ramp up the Nightwish a bit….. a little more weight! Yours is an Empty Hope - Easter egg alert! Yes!! I discovered Nightwish because of this cover back when I was in uni, was really sad to hear that after binging and repeating all of their back catalogue of songs and concerts that I didn't realise that Tarja apparently was removed from the band after this particular tour, iirc after this particular concert due to differences in priorities. The band's composer Tuomas got massive backlash due to this decision in Finland and was severely depressed after that and due to that composed Poet and the Pendulum as like his metaphorical suicide instead of doing it in real life. I think it's fine to research on that song before reacting to it but going in blind is fine as well. The best version of Poet and the Pendulum is at their Wembley concert with Floor Jansen, imo. I think Poet and the Pendulum is one of their top 3 of Tuomas' masterpieces. Cheers! Have a great week!

However, it's important to do some research before reacting to that song, because it's a really personal song to Tuomas and you will understand better the different sections and lyrics of the song. I bet you as a musician and vocal coach will find that song really interesting.

I first saw them live during their Wishmaster Tour (2000). Tarja (only 23 at the time) singing 4-5 meters in front of me was a shocking experience.

Vocals by Johanna Kurkela, Tuomas' wife. She sounds totally different from all three of Nightwish female vocalists. Johanna has a succesful solo career in Finland. She's also the vocalist of Auri, a band she has with Tuomas and Troy, the Nightwish multi-instrumentalist. And she has a band called 'Altamullan Road' with another Johanna, who sings on "A Lifetime of Adventure" as well. They, the two Johannas, have performed this song live too.
Marko and Tarja transform the music theater source material. They put the "Phantom" and "Opera" into The Phantom of the Opera in my opinion.

Yellow microphone - Tarja often switched dresses one or more time during a performance and often color-matched dress/mic/mic-stand.
Since this was captured for a later DVD relases and was the final performance of the tour and before the home-crowd she went all out here. IIRC Tarja had 7 or 8 dresses for this and 5? different color microphones and mic-stands for this concert. Also noteworthy is that they played a total of 18 songs in this concert while the preceeding concerts had all been between 14 and 16 songs, so it was also longer than normal, this was song 5.
Marko's Phantom is SOOOO much creepier than the original.
Please watch TARJA singing her 80s medley. That was a fun performance. I have a whole playlist of TARJA, I can recommend men so many different songs by her. I’m glad you started introducing yourself to her, this performance is a masterpiece and it’s still my favorite version of “the Phantom of the opera“.

My favorite Nightwish song at the moment is "The Siren" from End of an Era. It is such a haunting song and is a great collaboration between all the members of the band They each have their moment to shine... it feels just so perfectly balanced.

i like marcos type of phantom.... the phantom for me always was a bad/dirty/uncomfortable person/character... so the clear tunes normaly protrait with the phantom never really worked for me.
I would like to hear your thoughts of Tarja singing classical music like Ave Maria. She is such an amazing vocalist and you didn`t comment too much about her vocals here. She made an album full of Ave Maria`s from different composers and actually composed one herself, it`s the last one on the album En Plein Air 2015. The one I`m suggesting is by Paolo Tosti. Absolutely gorgeous song and performance, with no tricks but recorded as she and the musicians performed it in Lakeuden risti church.

I had never heard Nightwish perform and had only heard of them because I was seeing reactions pop up while watching reactions to Liliac and to Marc Martel. Then I started hearing/seeing people comment on them. And someone compared the lead singer of Liliac to Floor Jansen for range. It was over. I had to listen. This was the song I grabbed and was instantly a fan of it. Greatest cover of Phantom ever done imo and I think I've heard them all. They all come up short. I love Floor Jansen, and still, hands down this is the best performance of this song ever. Full stop. This is the finish cast of Phantom to echo another reactor. So I just took delivery in the last week of the complete End of an era set - lps, cd, bluray. as well as the Bluray set of Showtime Storytime. Great great musical investment. It's funny, I caught up with 7 years of Liliac last year about this time while on vacation and within another week had bought their entire discography. I hadn't bought new artist's work in decades. This was an easy and immediate "yes and give me more". Great reaction. Loved the one for Ghost love Score as well. Perfect. There is just no end of fun in watching people discover these amazing talents.

Floor did a version in a Dutch TV Show called "Beste Zangers" with Dutch phantom, Henk Poort.

Henk played the Phantom in the Dutch adaptation from 1993 to 1996 if I'm not mistaken..
Henk was Floor's "opera" role model, so to speak, during her teen years and it became a true honor for both Henk and Floor to actually meet each other when the 2019 season casting came around.
Floor was in 2 other bands prior to Nightwish, After Forever, and ReVamp. However she was somewhat down that the metal genre was not very popular in her home country of Netherlands.
Floor got the attention of her home crowd after performing and "winning" the Beste Zangers 2019 season. Many may argue that there is no actual "winner" in Beste Zangers, but after winning the hearts and ears of her people, she might disagree. Especially when many followed her into the metal world allowing it to finally bloom in her home country.
Symphonic metal is now on the map in the Netherlands, and Floor couldn't be happier.
Beste Zangers explained;
Floor sits on the "center" couch facing one artist singing to her and 5 others around her.
The artist sings a song written by Floor or one that has a special meaning to her, they perform the song in their own way.
Each artist takes their turn and do the same with a different song.
After everyone has taken their turn, Floor would choose a "Best Singer" based on sound originality, feeling, and emotion.
On the next episode, a different artist would take the center couch and the basis of the show would repeat.
Floor became "best singer" in the 2019 season.
As a grand finale at the end of the season, they performed duets and of the many that were performed, "Phantom of the Opera" was one Floor did with Henk.
They have been performing that song together on Floor's solo shows since.
Floor and Henk have collaborated on 2 other songs for Floor that they also perform live together.

Tarja is great, but you know the female opera part will be sung well. Marco stands out more, brings more colour, rage, range, IMHO, he does an amazing job, to outshine a fantastic live female singer with great range and control.
Now you can compare current Nightwish Vocalist Floor Jansen performing the same song as a duet (not with NW): "Floor Jansen & Henk Poort - Phantom Of The Opera | Beste Zangers 2019" video. Beste Zangers is a Dutch TV Music show, where Great Artists participate and sing to one "Star artist" his/hers own songs by the other performing artists own version/twist - a great show and Floor has many unforgettable performances there (like Shallow, Vilja Lied, I don't know a thing about love etc.)

Best zangers version referenced above is fine, but it misses Nightwish musical arrangement. The drums, bass and quitar are so good. Like in high hopes and Walking in the air.
I don’t often say this but on this one, I prefer Tarja’s version. Beste Zangers is fun but this performance with the whole band is a one of a kind! Not to mention, I believe this is the very last show before the infamous letter……

I still wish you'd take a look at Billie singing "Sally's Song" from Danny Elfman's "Nightmare Before Christmas" It's on the VENOM channel on You Tube - Oct. 29 or 30, 2021. Henk Poort also covers "Sound of Silence" and reminds a person, that DISTURBED's "Sound of Silence" is not the only great cover of Simon & Garfunkel's song [really Paul Simon's song since he wrote virtually everything they sang - unless it was a cover like the Everly Brothers "Bye, Bye, Love".

Tarja is on the first five albums, this is the real and original NW. The version after tarja has some more great works, especially the next two albums, but it is very different. Jukka is one of the best drummers around, he is on the first 7 albums and has many time signatures and just interesting tricky things going on that this is another huge loss for the band. Floor, with her voice and stage charisma has simply taken their catalogue of fantastic songs into a new generation. Ghost love score is from the tarja era.

You're very talented! 🙂 This is my favorite version of this song. I was always a little disappointed that the musical didn't go hard enough, and that the Phantom didn't have more of an edge, and that's what we get here. Love it. I'd love to see a full version like this. For another Nightwish song, maybe Song of Myself? Maybe Shoemaker, because the ending of that is pretty stunning. I was completely blown away when I heard that live, as it was a song I was unfamiliar with. I don't know if there is a good live version of it though.
Also, I have a request! I would love, love, love for you to do a reaction to LiSA, either Gurenge or Homura, on First Take. Her vocals are world class. She's the singer that amazes me, right along with Floor. I think you would find her interesting, and I'd love to see what you thought. She sings with so much intensity and emotion. She's right on the edge of losing herself to it. On First Take, it's just her and a piano, so all you get is her voice isolated with a piano, which is perfect for a reaction from you! I can't pick Gurenge or Homura. I think Gurenge you get a little more range of what she can do, but Homura carries even more emotion into it. If you check either out, I recommend turning on the CC, because English subtitles are there. Especially important for Homura, because she says a few things at the end. During the song, it's sort of impossible to not be mesmerized by her so I haven't ever followed all of the lyrics lol.

This is the line up which made Nightwish great and actually the whole growing process from a school band to the global leader of the genre. Later came the substitutes for some of them. They act the roles of Phantom and Christine too so well - just best live one can find for this song.

To me this is the greatest music performance I have ever witnessed, across all genres and schools. Marko and Tarja are genius singers and musicians, as is the rest of the band. But also, Tuomas, the composer of Nightwish is an absolute genius. All those things that Nina picked out were designed by this brilliant composer. Marco and Tarja executed them to perfection, but Tuomas was most likely the one of think of them in the first place. This band is truly unique. There can be other great bands, singers can change, but there can never be another Nightwish. To be honest, to me Nightwish was always more about Tuomas and Marco rather than the lead female. We've had 3 lead females, but I think replacing Marko's sound will be more difficult.
Tarja is the original singer of Nightwish. You should look for her performances in the live End of an Era tour, and also in studio versions of the albums Century Child and Once, in particular. She has a more opera focus than Floor and some Nightwish songs from that era were definitely written for her vocal style.
What’s next? It’s looking like time to ramp up the Nightwish a bit….. a little more weight!

I usually don't recommend checking Tarja and Floor at the same time. We don't mind comparing them to each other, each Nightwish singer is a unicorn of her own era. We all know that these days we live in the era of Floor and since you love Phantom, I hope you'll check out her and the magical Henk Poort's version next❤️. You gonna love it!

Yes!! I discovered Nightwish because of this cover back when I was in uni, was really sad to hear that after binging and repeating all of their back catalogue of songs and concerts that I didn't realise that Tarja apparently was removed from the band after this particular tour, iirc after this particular concert due to differences in priorities. The band's composer Tuomas got massive backlash due to this decision in Finland and was severely depressed after that and due to that composed Poet and the Pendulum as like his metaphorical suicide instead of doing it in real life. I think it's fine to research on that song before reacting to it but going in blind is fine as well. The best version of Poet and the Pendulum is at their Wembley concert with Floor Jansen, imo. I think Poet and the Pendulum is one of their top 3 of Tuomas' masterpieces.

For the next Nightwish song I recommend Poet and the Pendulum live at Wembley. However, it's important to do some research before reacting to that song, because it's a really personal song to Tuomas and you will understand better the different sections and lyrics of the song.
