Individual Canadian provinces have the legal sovereignty to leave the Canadian union.

In fencing we have a term for these things that Trump is doing. It's called a feint. A feint is an action that looks so convincing as to draw a response by the fencer to defend themself. We train on the idea that when someone doesn't respond to your feint you just turn it into a true attack. The key is to hedge your response until the last possible moment so they can't hit you to a different opening while you were over committed to defending against the feint.

Like Trump's 'feint' about injecting bleach? Or his 'feint' of suggesting we nuke a hurricane?

The question should be: do the people of Greenland want to be part of the United States? That should be the starting point, not an ambition to make it part of the United States.

Dude says "Democrats are more likely to think Trump is being serious" as if there's zero track record of Trump being serious about some of the mind-numbingly moronic stuff he says and does. When a politician tells us something, our default reaction should be to take them seriously until they prove otherwise. They're telling us what they hope to accomplish, no matter how outlandishly stupid it is.

I think he serious about "something."
But not the trolling he did.
He usually says something over the top. Hints at something even crazier.
Trolls people, then does something much smaller.
Probably independent Greenland with a military protection from the USA.
Probably an integration of Markets or something.
This is a massive success on foreign policy for the USA if they can absorb Greenland into the fold of the USA.
Without Greenland compromising on their independence as a nation state.
    Keeping China & Russia away.
Voting to join as a territory or a state would just be extra credit for him, being the main purpose is keeping China & Russia away.
Greenland declaring independence from their colonizers is making the Danish government go berserk.
And without some protection deal from somebody they can't leave.
Trump probably is looking to troll people to direct the discussion on the table for independence.

It would probably be US protectorate, like many small islands in the Pacific. The people there aren't technically US citizens but get the benefit of US protection, and in exchange the US can base military forces there and in the case of Greenland access to mineral rights.

Obviously Trump wasn't willing to rule out anything. That would be a dumb move for a negotiator with the amount of leverage the USA can employ. Not sure if the 538 analysts are intentionally misunderstanding Trump or if they don't have the wits to understand his actions.

Any time Trump is trolling hes distracting from other stupid shit hes gonna do. So... anything the idiot says is potentially of concern.

Not if we look at Denmark's actions. They felt the heat, badly! They're squirming under the pressure, and pressure makes all things fluid. A huge win for the USA.

If it sounds good: he's lying (how's it going, Gays For Trump?)
If it sounds bad, evil, illegal and / or batshit insane: he's serious. He might not be able to do it but he wants to.

@@skatealex1 It is not the same at all because people of Greenland prefer to be with the US, its population is small, and the land is underutilized, it would be better for the whole western alliance to have someone who can actually extract natural resources from there, to actually extract them, unlinke Denmark

Genius move by Trump. He's a master negotiator, all those complaining do not understand the strategy.

Lay it out here then please, I genuinely don't understand the strategy. Thank you.

    • @Habib_Osman

@@nicebluejay There's many factors coming together. The massively increased militarism in the world, further exploration of the north, a "rebel/visionary" leader knowing he has 4 years to spend after which most likely a more moderate regime will take over, Denmarks awkward ownership of Greenland, Greenlands tiny population, Greenlands upcomming independance, improving China - Russia relations (the 3 big players of the arctic are Russia. China and the US). I think, weighing all those factors- Trump knows "he's got the ball" It's his turn to make a play, it's the right time for that play. Where exactly it will end up nobody can know. When you negotiate you rarely get all you want, but a smart trader knows that and will aim a little higher than what is expected in return. I think Trump has just done that.. and it will likely result in the US being a little more sovereign in the region, maybe some colonialization by US civilians can happen in the next few decades and who knows where we will be in 50 years. Trump has just started that process with a bang even though all US's allies are against it, he set out on that daring path. Visionary, courageous leadership.

@@Habib_Osman many thanks for that summary, I agree with it. Obviously part of his strategy is keeping not just his enemies guessing but also his allies. This is known colloquially as the madman theory. Seems to fit. This term was first coined during the Nixon administration.

    • @Habib_Osman
      @Habib_Osman 3 дні тому

@@nicebluejay Yes.. I'm aware of the theory. I'd add that there is a political influence stronger than any president, and that is US's political "continuum". To US citizens it might appear that their political division is total, but.. whenever a system is allowed to be flexible.. it means there is a clear center. So, Trump might go a little further in his policies because he knows a milder regime will follow, this milder regime might for example raise the minimum wage to say 15 dollars/h, knowing their regime will likely be followed up by a more strict/conservative one etc. There's a logic to it like a sinus wave. Things are allowed to go a little overboard in all directions.. and from that emerges a political continuum. The funny thing is that this concept is tough to understand for US citizens, but obvious to all those living outside the US. It's like good cop/bad cop. 1 coherent strategy made from opposites like ying and yang.
