Three geniuses at work. Besides the harmonies being "close," they seem very close themselves, always watching each other as they perform, always connecting.
Filmmakers struggle to capture the essence of early Twentieth Century New Orleans. Well, this is IT: cosmopolitan, witty, only slightly 'American', and more like a German enclave in South America, than "Southern" - the Boswell Sisters TOTALLY absorbed, and then emanated, the spirit of the place.
Wow, thanks SO MUCH for this terrific number. That old school Brooklyn mountain comic style bit in the break ("If you wanna' hear some real BAD harmony why don't you listen to your own orchestra once in a while?"), makes this treasure all the more special.
That's bandleader Abe Lyman. Which is why Martha says, "If you want to hear some real bad harmony, why don't you listen to your own orchestra sometime?" He gets to play the heavy in that segment.
They were following her. She was their inspiration and leader. The one who went on to a solo career, and the one Ella Fitzgerald emulated at the Apollo that fateful night.
@harryoakley It appears to be from a short called Rambling Round Radio Row #1. The sh_t in question must be Abe Lyman. Here's a synopsis from IMDB.com (trimmed for YT length): Jerry Wald has to write about radio, visiting Sid Gary gives him the tip it might be more easy for him to write this article at the radio station. At the studio they listen to the Boswell Sister's rehearsal, which is interrupted by some not so friendly remarks by orchestra leader Abe Lyman, they listen at the door...
Pie 2: Connee Boswell was interviewed by Rich Conaty on his "Big Broadcast" radio show on WFUV in the 1970's You could contact Rich on his ID on Facebook to talk to him about it.
Fantastic! This is the third early Boswells tune on film - unlike the other clips this is clearly a scene from a movie. Who is the s..t with the nasty comments?

How are the lyrics racist? I've heard they were but.. can't hear anything
We can't forget how musically advanced they were. Not just the harmony but their phrasing was hip rhythmically. And boy have times changed. How rude to smoke a cigar in a room where someone is singing. Imagine it being okay to walk into a recording studio smoking a cigar today.

Just discovered these girls....love them !!!
Roy Blount Jr wrote a great essay about their music.
Well they certainly do swell harmony. You said it.
they certainly do swell harmony!
LOVE THESE TIMES!!
Connee, the lead singer, was a paraplegic in real life and was in a wheelchair. In movies she obviously could only be shown seated.

Wow they are so harmonic.
If they were still performing they would indubididly go platinum.
That's bandleader Abe Lyman. Which is why Martha says, "If you want to hear some real bad harmony, why don't you listen to your own orchestra sometime?" He gets to play the heavy in that segment.
Thanks, I was wondering who that is
Remember that the Andrew Sisters and Lennon Sisters and the Dinning Sisters were created to try to copy the Boswell Sisters.
They didn't come close.
Yep it's indeed Abe Lyman! Great discovery!!
Thank you from Amsterdam.
yes
The investors of American pop music in action.
They seem to be protective of their sister on the left.
She was paralyzed from the age of 3yrs old.
They were following her. She was their inspiration and leader. The one who went on to a solo career, and the one Ella Fitzgerald emulated at the Apollo that fateful night.

SO much better than the Andrews sisters 10 years later. Andrews sisters singing makes my teeth itch.
