The Thai instrument Saw U looks similar to the erhu, but the base is made of Coconuts shell, whereas the Erhu is made of wood and snake python skin, the playing technic would be similar to the erhu, because they both has got the bow in between two strings.
Can you answer the question for me, is the erhu the same instrument that in Thailand is called the "saw?" It sure looks like it, but I want to be sure because I want to buy one. Thanks!
Hello! More recently, an erhu was brought and the question arose about the correct setting of the bow. In the video, they showed that the index finger is placed on the block, middle and ring between the block and the hair, and the little finger under the hair. It seems to be trying to do like them, but I'm not quite sure if I am doing the right thing. On the re-string, it seems that it is possible to lead the bow smoothly and the brush moves, and on the la string the fingers on the bow begin to slide, straighten, especially when I lead up and rub the hook on the skin that holds the hair a little. Please tell me, is this normal, just out of habit? Or is it still not quite right?
I have played guitar for many years, I really want to learn this beautiful sounding instrument. I am looking, as ever, on eBay, any tips? After finding your channel I'm even more wanting to add this instrument to my playing collection
Hello Ling, I want to play the Erhu by ear and by watching as a beginner. What's the difference between bowing the inner string and the outer string of the Erhu? Also, I have a question, in your video, when you bow the inner string, it's okay to hold the horse hair? But when bowing the outer string, the horse hair should not be touched? Lastly, how do people tune their Erhu?
Hi Shella, when you bowing the inner string, your middle two fingers are pushing the hair to touch the inner string to make the sound, and when you play outer string, the bamboo of the bow should be drop down to touch the drum of the erhu and bow. at this point, the middle two fingers are not in use. I hope this helpful, I have more videos on www.erhulesson.com website.
brilliant lesson. I really appreciate you putting this up. If I were to practice for an hour a day, how long do you think it would take to have a good bowing technique?
It will not take too long for you to be able to control the bow, once you can hold the bow correctly, then you will just need listen to the sound and make sure the sound is nice and not too scratchy, by doing that, you are improve your bowing technique naturally.
Thats great. I have played guitar for 15 years so I'm hoping that the left hand technique won't be too difficult... (we will see how that goes!) Its just the bowing that I'm worried about. Would you recommend an electric erhu? (like this: www.joyochina.cn/en/product/fl_28.html) I would like one that doesn't make too much noise so I can practice when the kids are in bed. Thanks!
Danny English I understand, specially when you just start to learn the erhu. but I don't thing the Joyo is the solution for that. if you want to play erhu, tt is the sound of erhu attract you to learn, I don't think Joyo can give you wants you want fromthe erhu, maybe you better off have a proper erhu and one of this: (www.ebay.com/itm/ROLAND-ERHU-PREAMP-EH-10A-ERHU-EFFECTS-PICKUP-/261306688382). Mind you this one is a lot of money, I am getting one from China soon, I might be able to tell you how much and where to get one.
Ling Peng Ah so its like an amp that you attach to your erhu? Ok - if I get to that point I shall bear that in mind. P.s - Are you able to give lessons via a webcam? There are no erhu teachers near me. Thank you so much for your help!
Hi, thank you for the great video. I have a problem though; my bow touches both strings when I put it in the correct position (even when I don't move it, it's just right in between and touches them both) therefore I can't make a sound. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong
If you rest your bow on the erhu drum, the bow will touch both strings, it's up to you to put pressure on the bow to guide the bow to bow on the strings that you wish to make a sound.
Collin Dominguez The bow can be unscrewed completely, separating the frog (which is connected to the horsehair) from the stick. This will allow you to pass the frog (and thus the horse hair) through the two strings, and after which, the frog can be reattached to the stick.
Hi ling, on my left hand, i can't bend my middle finger, i'm also missing half my wedding finger, i can only effectivally use my thumb, index and pinkey fingers, would i still be able to bow? As in is there an alternative using thumb and index only? thanks in advance.
Sushi Hi Sushi, Thanks for the message. I understand that you are talking about you left hand, but you need right hand to bow,. so if you have a perfect hand, you will be able to bow.

Elena sub there’s a few reasons why a scratchy squeaky sound is produced. Pulling the bow with insufficient speed can cause an unpleasant sound to be produced. Applying too much pressure on the horsehair will cause the bow to “bite” the string, so moving the bow too slowly will cause the bow to be pulled in a jerky manner, producing a scratchy sound. Thus, you’ll be needing just the right amount of pressure and bow speed to have a clearer sound. Also, Ensure that the bow is always as close to the neck of the erhu as possible.
Former violin player- not quite. It takes practice. I went in, thinking I'll have no trouble because I used to play the violin (love string instruments in general), but was surprised. But with enough practice you'll get the hang of it :)
your very beautiful! thank you for posting this.. I just got an Erhu
Your website looks great. My Erhu should arrive January 19th and I'll sign up when it appears. I look forward to learning with you.
I'll mark my calendar for January 19th. What time do you suppose it will come?

Amna S No, I am based in the U.K. well, I think the eBay ones might not be very good.
I just got a brand new erhu. subbed and will be watching everything you have! Thank you!
You are a great teacher!
Team Cantonese 余龍偉 Thank you!
(Tension) How tight/loose should the bow be as it seems looser than a violin bow?
Greetings teacher, when does one finish playing the Erhu! You have to loosen your strings.
Thanks for the lesson looking forward to learn here. 👍

How do you put the bow between the 2 strings?

How come my ergo does not make noise?

你的英语非常标准, 美国音吗?
哈哈, 谢谢你。 大家都说我有英国口音, 因为我在英国居住了快30年啦。
@@lingpeng3695原来是英国, 住了30年,很自然的带有当地的口音。 很棒。
It seems similar to the cello or the violin.
Or literally any bowed string instrument? What's your point?
trust me, its not
