That's the difference. The keys from dealerships come pre-programmed. A large percentage of the people searching are looking to program an aftermarket key or a used key from another car. But I will say this...thank you for sharing this information as there are still people out there who have issues with their oem replacement keys ordered through the dealership.
When you order a key from the a BMW dealership they pre-code and program it to your VIN number that you give them as proof of ownership. All you did in the video was to sync it to the car. Your procedure doesn't program anything, just syncs it to your vehicle. You should update your video and description as too many people are even more confused now after watching your "helpful" video.
UPDATE 1/31/19. BMW dealers can no longer sell these without the owner physically being there and having proof of ownership. Additionally, the dealer this guy bought his programed key from (Sonic Fairfax BMW VA.) now charges $310.00 for a factory coded key and $150. extra to program "Comfort Access" features onto your new key. Grand total, in person $460.+ tax.
BMW Keys ordered from the dealer on this year car are programmed to the cars immobilizer when the car is built. All you have to do is put it in the car and start it. Aftermarket keys need to be programmed to the vehicle.
If you got it from the dealer direct you probably had a pre-programmed key anyway. Probably many viewers are wondering how to program a used or aftermarket key that did not come from the dealer.
The dealer had asked you for the VIN cuz they can program the key for the car based on the VIN. The 20 secs you waited was for the Car's system to write the personal information that's stored on the BMW to the key . after that the key has a copy of the information stored in the key fob.. If it was your wife's key.. you should have her set everything in the BMW the way she likes it before inserting the new key.. That way the system was going to remember all her settings and transfer it to the key.. when ever she inserted the key, all of her personal setting would be set before she started the car .
what you are seeing and what people keep doing on youtube is not "reprogramming a key" its activating a key that has been reprogrammed by the dealer. so unless you have a key that you bought from the dealer with your vin# associated with your car's vin# it won't work. unless i missed something here?
Wow I don't know what's wrong with other people in these comments, but I did order a key from BMW with necessary info, and I still had to program it and found your video very helpful. They told me it was programmed to my car, but I still needed to sync it. It wouldn't do any of the keyless functions prior to your video, now everything works. Thanks again!
Programming and syncing are two different processes. This video is useless to people that are actually seeking programming info (Which is what the title indicates). If your key wasn't programmed from BMW, you would never be able to use it (no matter how much you tried to sync it). So, nothing is wrong with the people in this thread. The problem is with the video creator's misunderstanding and/or misuse of the word "Programming" in his title.
Guys when you buy a Key from the dealer it comes programmed to the car and all you are doing is activating the key that is set up from the factory, there is no special trick here. BMW allows the order of up to 10 remote code. You cannot do this with a blank key or a key that has another code. The code for the car is an imbedded chip and you can't rewrite a blank key by the process shown
Hmmm...I assume the car started because you had the working key inside the car. I can press the start button without my key fob in the slot and it would start. I can drive without putting it in. It's late, so I will try tomorrow morning and see what happens. I have had an extra key for a while and did not want to spend $400 to program it. Thanks for this method, it looks very simple, so I will try and see if something happens.
I do not have the convenience package option so my door does not unlock if I just open the door unless I hit the unlock button. Similarly, my key MUST be in the slot to start.
I do NOT have the comfort access option. Door will not unlock without using the fob unlock button. Car will NOT start unless key fob is IN the key slot.
Had a new battery put in my 2011 BMW X5 and when I got the car back the courtesy feature on the FOB would not work. I followed his instructions and after 50 seconds the FOB was programed.
Let me explain it at the level of the video and those who liked it. Programming means getting ANY key, and followinng a procedure to make the key work. Your procedure will not work on ANY key, the one you got from the dealer was programmed.
You activated the key. You didn’t program it. At the beginning of your video, you mentioned a lot of misinformation online. Well, if you don’t change the title of you video, you are misinforming your audience.
ok so what was the point of that video ? Yes you got your key from dealer , its already program . If i gonna order for my M5 key , i need to wait few weeks before delivery from Germany . If your key was empty, Your desplay never would open and you would have sign on your dash ,,no key in car ,,, . .
Calling or trying to get help from a BMW dealer is a waste of time, believe me I know, I tried. I thought I had a good relationship with my service advisor but no. When it comes to information about how to do something with your car, they won't say anything and I understand it's business. But thank God for for the internet and UA-cam.
The ONLY think you need to program with a factory BMW key is the "Convenience" feature that unlocks the doors when your key fob comes close to the car. That still needs to be programmed
Ya because factory keys are pre programmed and coded from BMW manufacturer . Bmw smart keys have to be coded and programmed from scratch. Also BMW connects to all there cars and they are able to activate the key for u without u ever knowing. If u buy a blank online it has to be coded with a special scanner and then perform learning procedure
This is really stupid. The dealer programmed it for you. You cant just stick any bmw key in any model for 20 seconds and it works are you serious man???
Anytime I have purchased a key from the BMW dealer (about $200.00), they AUTOMATICALLY COME PROGRAMMED - nothing special that you did on this. The trick most people want to do is buy a key from a locksmith or online and PROGRAM THAT TO THE CAR - your method will not work on these other keys!
I don't understand what's the big deal you ordered a key from the dealer they come already programmed you didn't even have to wait for a few seconds for it to start. Let's see what you'll do when you lose your key somewhere stranded where you have to move the vehicle wonder if the dealer can help right then and there. You are giving people false hopes if they are stranded. If the vehicle is at your home you have the time in the world to order key from dealer.
Wow I just can’t explain myself how did you said you read a lot about this and you don’t even know what the heck happened! When you buy a key from a BMW dealer the KEY FOB comes programmed already! You look bad in my opinion saying how easy was to “program a bmw key, I’m going to file a complaint against this videos to mislead info to FIFA , lol
I purchased a new key from the dealer and the key came program. They ask for your proof of ownership drivers license , registration and Vin number. They use all that information to program you a new key. They charged me $350 to program the new key. One year later the comfort access stop working with the new key and I asked the Dealer to fix it. The BMW dealer said no. They wanted me to pay $1700 to replace my back up camera before they Would fix my key. I told The dealer, I don’t see what the back up camera have to do with my key. My personal mechanic tried to reprogram the key but is asking for code which I don’t have.
Sorry, I do not know the answer. Perhaps someone else will reply or you could post your question on xoutpost.com where a lot of BMW X5 experts and enthusiasts hang out.
no this is not as a programming issue....more thn likely the button on the curcuit board in key has failed. you can orrder a new key fromn the dealer orr puchase an empty shell from ebay, cut open your key, go to any electronics repair store and have them change the button then reinstall it in the new shell
That doesn't work on my 2011 BMW 335Is, I purchased the key and key fob (exactly like your key fob) from my local dealer, they asked me for proof of ownership, and after that ordered the new key and key fob for $300, the key works but not the confort access, the dealer ask for another $300 to program the new key fob with confort access, now what I do?
Did u ever get ur comfort access working? Either way, all you have to do is get yourself an OBD dongle and one of many BMW coding apps and you can code it yourself. I use BimmerCode and BimmerLink. BimmerCode is all u would need for coding but if u wanted to change and register ur own battery, u would have to code it and then use BimmerLink to register it. As for other coding apps, there's Carista, Carly, and a few others. With Carista u just need a compatible dongle. Carly has to use it's dongle. I have an OBDLink CX, which which was designed to be used with BimmerCode but it can definitely be used with other apps.
I did forget to say one thing though before I hit send and it hit me just as a hit send... If the FCCID is 127 at the end then it's not comfort access capable if it's the 147 it is. So hope I didn't get your hopes up for nothing. But let me know how it turns out
The supplier obviously sent me a pre-programmed key. The point of my video was I wanted to share the process I was originally contemplating .... namely by a cheap key on ebay and have it programmed by locksmith. I figured that total price was no great deal and no substantial savings so I focused on finding someone who would sell me a pre-programmed key for less money than my local dealer.
These days everybody wants to post a video. Dude it has to make sense. Listen to yourself! They asked for the vin# so they could program the key. Get a blank key fob from somewhere else, I guarantee you it will not work. Make a video about it; that's your challenge.
this video is completely unhelpful. I have a 2013 335i, and I ordered the key from the dealer. They don't come pre-programmed always. The REASON you give a VIN, is so you can prove ownership and get the right parts. My key does NOTHING! I have the new one, which is useless until I can program it...and I can't
THAT's the point. You don't have to pay someone to program a key you buy cheap on the internet. It's cheaper to buy the key programmed than to go thru all the steps you read about on the internet. Sorry you didn't like it.
What a luck you have there man...i lost my x6 key and now i can't unlock or open the doors just to et inside...i've asked a key fob dealer and it costs about 500$ just to get a new reprogrammed key replacement ..hear me out, it's just for a copy of the physical key with the programing, YES, ONLY...to open the door they said we have to get a locksmith.... For the expensive price they charge, i would hav assumed that they would take everything in charge, but Noooo...what an ass...but i guess i don't have a choice :(
Hi, can you please help with the name of the dealer or the link to the ebay. Can't find any ebay listings for this part in VA. Need a new key asap. Thanks for your help.
of course it doesen't!the key that he has is pre-progremmed from dealer !if you buy a new key from internet you need to find a locksmith to program the key!
That's the difference. The keys from dealerships come pre-programmed. A large percentage of the people searching are looking to program an aftermarket key or a used key from another car.
But I will say this...thank you for sharing this information as there are still people out there who have issues with their oem replacement keys ordered through the dealership.
Misleading title. It's not fob programming. It's purchasing/making a key from local BMW dealer.

His car is equipped with "comfort access" which, like most, which will allow his key that he has in his pocket, to start the car. Don't be fooled.
Agree 👍

As a locksmith it only works because you bought from dealer and they precoded the key to start, will not work with a key bought online!

Pretty sure the card picked up on the key in your pocket. These cars will start without the key in the ignition.
i do not have comfort access. Key MUST be in the slot to start.
BMW dealership already program the key with registration & VIN#, u did the final program steps.
Hi when you order it from the dealer u don't have to Reprogram it because it's comes programmed
Now buy a key on eBay and see if you can program it that way you never gonna start that car
yes this is when you order a key from authorized dealer !!! key comes programmed already ... what was the big deal ?

Hi I lost my BMW key and wanted to get this done. Where do I start
If he gave the details to BMW then he received a PROGRAMMED key. No wonder it was simple.
It came Programmed from the dealership! That's one reason why he asked for the vin number! You cannot program a new key that way!
Useless! Label the video "Buying a key from a dealer"
Exactly
Hmmm...I assume the car started because you had the working key inside the car. I can press the start button without my key fob in the slot and it would start. I can drive without putting it in. Can you now use key#2 on its own without having key#1 with you?
I do NOT have keyless start not do I have the keyless door access option. My car must have a key in the slot to start.
yes
I do NOT have the comfort access option. Door will not unlock without using the fob unlock button. Car will NOT start unless key fob is IN the key slot.
Great instructions, worked first time, thank you!
You completely misrepresented what you did. The fob was programmed based on your VIN by the BMW Dealer. You activated it!
Had a new battery put in my 2011 BMW X5 and when I got the car back the courtesy feature on the FOB would not work. I followed
his instructions and after 50 seconds the FOB was programed.

lol, same here. he's unaware of what he got, he thinks he programmed it
You activated the key. You didn’t program it. At the beginning of your video, you mentioned a lot of misinformation online. Well, if you don’t change the title of you video, you are misinforming your audience.

ur wrong he opened and started the car with his good key not his blank key
The F150 is Stylish
Yep and then when you put in a blank key it comes up “wrong key”
Please change "Programming" to "Activating" - you did not program the key.
Calling or trying to get help from a BMW dealer is a waste of time, believe me I know, I tried. I thought I had a good relationship with my service advisor but no. It didn't work on my X5 I think it is BS
Does it have remote start?? My gf has same vehicle. She doesn’t believe she has it. May be 2013
You just discover the water is wet! Key fob comes preprogrammed from dealer 😂
If you buy the key from a BMW dealer, it comes programmed.
That means that your key already came programmed this wouldn’t apply to anyone else other then dealer keys
They send you a programmed key
Everyone Can Do DIY projects yes once you order a bnw key from the dealer it comes programmed to your car
So of course it would work, nothing else needed to be done.
nothing else...incidentally a customer ordered ky arrived today for his x6 and worked right off the bat

I need an extra key for my bmw 2013 x5 xdrive 35i. How can i get one and programing? Same way?
