    In this video, I share my thoughts of how the new Profoto A1 performed at a wedding. My good friend Bryan joins me to ask questions.

    Thank you for your vids on the A1! I am seriously thinking of getting 2 of them next year.

    7:50: Just in case, 5.0 is not half power, it's 1/32. 9.0 is half power.

    My rule is that I change the batteries of every piece of equipment during the eating.
    All new batteries for the rest of the wedding needed or not.

    Yoo hoo! Just got my two A1s with an extra battery, the Soft Bounce and a Gel Kit. I'm testing shots now, immediate impressions are favorable. They seem to work well with my B1s and D1s with both the A1 on camera or off camera using the Air Remote. So far my only issue is no belt strap on the bag. :( I would never want to carry the A1 in its pouch with the over-the-shoulder strap. But, I'm expecting to enjoy the SIMPLICITY of using these units in more creative ways, off camera, more easily than I can with my SB-910 which is really too complex. The only thing that matters is getting the results and I am hoping that after a little practice and more familiarity, using the A1 will be far more intuitive than speedlights so I can get what I want without really having to think about it. I have a head start since I've been using Profoto strobes now for about five years as the interface is similar.
    Update: Another issue is the hot shoe connector is ridiculously too tight. I'm borderline worried it will "stretch out" my hot shoe mount if I ever went back to speedlights.

    Heather, would you explain how/why you could trade three Nikon speedlights for two Profoto A1s? Assuming that one speedlight was on camera and acting as both key/fill + commander/trigger, how would just two A1s replace them, since one A1 would have to be on camera? Or does the A1 trigger activate both off camera A1 units, and you wouldn't need an on-camera A1? But even if the A1 trigger activates both off camera A1s, it doesn't add any light, so…? I have a Nikon body + two SB-800s and I'm trying to figure out if the move to the Profotos is worth exploring. Thank you for your help!

      Absolutely! At receptions, I currently use one flash on camera and two off-camera. The two that are off-camera are mounted on the same tripod. I would replace the on-camera flash with an A1 and the two off-camera with another A1. But to answer your question, yes, the trigger mounted on-camera could fire two A1's off-camera. However, I like to have one on-camera as well. Hope that helps!

      Ah, two speedlights on one tripod! Why, yes, that explains it perfectly, thank you!

    Hi Heather, this is the first photo I've watched of yours, and I really enjoyed it. I want to ask one question and make one comment. What ISO were you shooting at? You mentioned that you never took the flash power above 5.5, but I was wondering what ISO that was taking into account. My comment is this: You mentioned that you weren't sure how power level 2 compares to 1/128 power. Power level 10 is full power, power level 9 is one stop down, or half power, power level 8 is one stop down, or 1/4 power, so level 7 = 1/8, level 6 - 1/16, level 5 = 1/32, level 4 = 1/64, level 3 = 1/128, and level 2 = 1/256. I just recently traded my SB-900 for an A1, as I use the Profoto D1 and B1X, and I love having everything in the Profoto family.

      Thanks Eric! I think I was at ISO 1600 (typical reception setting for me).

    Heather, the smart TTL to manual and maintain settings sounds awesome; does that work the same way when you’re using the transmitter to multiple flashes?

    • @HeatherLahtinen
      @HeatherLahtinen  6 років тому

      Not sure, Joe. I've only had the opportunity to work with one unit off-camera, but I assume that it would.

      Yes it does work with multiple units. It will retain the settings in each individual unit when you switch it to manual from til

    I looked at this instead of the SB5000 but a review on UA-cam showed a massive loss in power output when shooting above 250th in HSS which was extremely worrying.

      I played with the SB5000 a little bit, but not enough to make a judgement. If we ever see the sun again, I will test this.

      Hey thanks for your reply. I managed to get the SB5000 and the A1 for side by side testing over the weekend using the TTL-N and WR-R10 for off camera testing too when paired with my 850 at 9fps. There's a huge price difference between the two but will need to see how they compare at the weekend.

      it's obvious. a flash at 1/1 power at 250th produces the same exposure of the same flash at 1/50 power at 200th. the burst mode in hss decreases the power. all the speedlights works in this way. to work better in hss you have to use strobes. but if you want to freeze the action your strobe need a 1/8000 of flash duration at least. so you could use d2 500W around 1/32 (below 4.7/10 of his total power where 10 is the higher power). so a 500W strobe to freexe action has 15.9W. if you want to spend less money and you will buy godox ad600bm 600W lamp, you will freeze the motion at 1/128 where hiw power is around 4.68W. on camera flash has a crazyfast flash duration at 1/16 is 1/8860 and at 1/256 is 1/30280. but obviosly a strobe at 1/13000 (1/10 power) like the d2 500 has 2W. much more then a speedlight at 1/256th.

    There is noting this flash can do that I can not already do with my Canon 600EX-RT Mk2s. It is overpriced and not even weather sealed !

      PJL Photography I have to agree. It's a speedlight. If you really want to spend almost $1000 on a speedlight, go for it. I'll get three or four for the same money...

    • @PjlphotographyNet
      @PjlphotographyNet 6 років тому +1

      Yes, it is very deceptive marketing on the part of profit. The worlds smallest studio flash indeed ! What rubbish. Its a speed light and thats all it is.

      At one time, Profoto was the absolute undisputed best, and worth every extra penny. What Profoto is missing is that the other brand-name manufacturers do not suck any more. They might still be be a little better than anyone else, but they are not three times better. Not for a long time.

      I think the harsh critics in this thread don’t realize the possibility of better quality of light and speed etc. I’m going to rent one first and test it out, but it’s funny you haven’t tried it and complain about price and don’t talk about the many issues the Canon Speedlites have.

    • @PjlphotographyNet
      @PjlphotographyNet 6 років тому +1

      Actually I did fall for the clever marketing and purchased one ... Then returned it for a refund ! I found the build quality poor in my opinion. The A1 was a poor fit on the camera hot-shoe resulting in misfires . The flash head itself was 'wiggly' and had had no lock so when pointing the camera down with a modifier fitted the head would simply fall over ! The control dial has also no lock making it easy to accidentally knock it causing flash over or under exposure...you have to constantly remember to keep checking the settings just in case. Not good for a professional product such as this. As for quality of light, well I suppose thats a matter of personal opinion but unless Profoto have somehow changed the law of physics I was always taught that a small light source produces hard light...the A1 like other speed lights IS a small light source. Most reviews I have seen have had a modifier fitted or it is being bounced of a large light wall or similar which you can do with any flash. As for the 'issues' with canon speedlights...I dont have any 'issues' with mine they work flawlessly for me.
