Wow can’t believe this was 9 years ago! I’m just now getting back into Reason and this just put my mixing over the top! Thank you! This is EXACTLY what I needed!

Brilliant video! Finally someone teaching OLD school mixing tricks in a new school environment. If we were actually sitting at an SSL console we would do a lot of things differently then we do when we sit at a computer screen. This is REAL gain staging you are teaching and the fact that the GAIN knob is at the top of the mix channel is a sign that we should start there. But since we sit at a computer screen and we see the faders first at the bottom, we tend to start there instead. Thank you so much for this.

I'm glad you went over the control room. Most PH users don't know about it. I just discovered it!

Everything I have just watched seamed so obvious it I have never done. I always looked at the controll room knob and though when will ever use this 🤔
Now I am always going to use it and my fader section is going to look alit different 😂

This is a revelation. I speak for myself but seem to think a lot of self taught audio engineers have never fully learned the basics of SSL mixer. It clears up and enhances so many things for me. Thank you Matt!

This is so different from everything else I’ve been learning from various sources, but it makes so much sense and it’s so much clearer. It actually uses the gain knobs which I’ve never seen anyone teach before!

I am BEYOND grateful!!! I am a self taught home studio guy. Been doing it for a while. I've been using Reason since version 4 on and off but switched to it as my main DAW with Reason 7. Not looking back!
I needed to say that this for me was probably the most helpful things I have come across for really making a difference to my understanding of the signal path. STOOOOKED!!!!

Thank you for an Awesome lesson ! This is pure gold. I cannot tell you how many gain staging videos, articles, blogs I’ve studied but none of them provided clarity in such a logical and easy to grasp manner. I’m not a Reasons user but this application is also applicable to Nuendo. Your teaching style is outstanding and I can’t thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us. I was able to translate this to my hybrid setup as well. I’m now concentrating on your other “Learn to mix” series and am so looking forward to going through your site content.

Thanks Matt. Definitely will help my mixes sound even better. I knew about the DB's levels in terms of where I should be but I never knew that the 'input gains' were the key to keeping things as loud as possible w/out moving the faders. I guess when you think about the word 'fader' and not 'gain or volume' makes perfect sense. Switching the routing from master control to control room is definitely I haven't seen before but is now in my mixing routine. I am or should I say was one of those people whose always hitting the reset button on the master fader until I get it right. Big time saver with that as well. Keep the tutorials coming.

I am not sure why ALL the tracks need to be gain staged at -10. I thought only the loudest of them (as reference) should be at -10. If all of them are at -10 then all the tracks will sound at the same volume. *confused
