- Jim Johnston who worked as WWE's legendary music producer for 32 years talks with Chris Van Vliet about why he hasn't been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. During the course of his career with WWE he composed more than 10,000 pieces of music before he was released in 2017. Jim joins CVV from his studio in Greenwich, CT for this incredible conversation!

Without this man, we would have no Steve Austin, Rock, Undertaker, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle. Shawn Michaels etc. The music isn't something that just plays a wrestler to the ring, you should get the entire persona of that wrestler in that entrance and Jim mastered that with his music
This guy worked himself to death doing themes for all those years from Ultimate Warrior to The Rock and then he gets fired. That's how loyalty is rewarded. Everything he says here is spot on.

AEW needs a man like Jim Johnston. I loved his WWF music. I still have the WWF Music vol 2,3,4. 3 is my favorite tho. His work is highly underrated

It's a shame WWE disrespected legend amongst legends like Jim. His body of work is one of the reasons why we tuned into Monday Night Raw! Stone Cold's glass shatter badass theme, Triple'H evolution of themes, Rock's iconic one, Undertaker's graveyard symphony and something so different in Big Evil's You're gonna pay. Bonafide Hall of famer. WWE, about time you made it up. They only give shit about male veteran wrestlers, other than that be it like Legends like Jim or for that matter female veterans are disrespected. Crappy on their part. Great to see Jim in an interview.

Imagine all of them without their theme... Jim Jonhtston deserves the HOF!

This is hands down the biggest travesty in the history of the Hall of Fame. Think about this for one second:
You have Snoop Dogg and William Shatner in. Two people that had little to no impact on the business as a whole. Then you have JJ, who not only created the SOUNDTRACK to millions of peoples’ youths, but essentially wrote and performed music that helped catapult wrestlers’ popularity who would then catapult the company.
JJ shouldn’t just be in the HOF…as far as I’m concerned, he’s probably the most important person they’d ever induct.
The hall of fame is just for show. They only put in on screen performers at the moment.
It really means nothing anyways. They’ll seemingly put anyone in just because they wrestled years ago. There are a lot of inductees who really have no business being in a hall of fame but since they aren’t ever inducted by merit or like other sports, by writers, they are in because they get people to watch the terrible HoF ceremonies.
It’s really not doné illustrious group of wrestlers, it’s literally for anyone who ever wrestled and is in current good standing with the company.
Doesn’t seem like Jim would want to be in it anyways since he’s understandably bitter about being fired.
In my opinion he should not only be in the wwe HOF but the rock n roll hall of fame as well as have his own star on the hollywood walk of fame. Simply for all of the music he did for the wwf during the attitude era. He was the theme music for hundreds upon hundreds of live audiences and millions of people watching at home. To me he’s at least earned a star on that hollywood sidewalk just for those contributions.

Looking forward to this one. The man has been so integral to the success of the WWE. Literally created the tone of the company for so long and is held in the hightest regard by the fans.

The music creates the mood, and I would argue some of WWE's biggest stars would not have had the same impact without Jim's music. Just imagine Stone Cold without the glass shattering, DX without "Break it down" or HBK without "I'm just a sexy boy".
Without this man we might not even like the OG wrestlers he needs to be on the Hall of Fame
Jim Johnston is a living legend! The themes he created for the WWF/WWE are amazing. Even outside of their association with the wrestlers, they are amazing compositions in their own right.
Can't believe the WWE had the nerve to fire him. While there's two sides to every story, the feelings evoked with many of the theme songs - their unique sound and emotional impact are an integral part of the characters.
How he hasn't entered the WWE hall of fame is beyond me. Whatever decisions were made, the WWE needs to right their wrongs and show respect to this man.
The first few seconds of the theme song are so impactful that the themes evoke intense emotions even many years ago. So many of them come to mind - stone cold's glass breaking, the rock's 'if you smell...', kurt angle's trumpet theme, hardy boyz, ... every theme I remember from my childhood was so critical to the character's persona and Jim not only captured these wrestler's personas but built their character.
I've even thought about many of the theme songs performed by famous artists like Disturbed, Motorhead, probably others but they don't come close to the originals created by Jim Johnston. He has a unique ability to not only read the characters but he literally builds them with the theme songs he created.
He needs to be in the Hall Of Fame! Without a doubt

Jim Johnston 100% deserves the Hall of Fame. I recall that during the New Generation/Golden Era he was making music for WWE then and they were all funky commercial music to fit the era WWE was in. And then the Attitude Era came in and Jim was spot on with heavy metal/hardcore music that fit for various wrestlers. He was able to adapt to a complete change in musical direction the WWE wanted at the time.

As fans, its our duty to help this guy get into hall of fame since he is a huge part of our childhood. I say let's make him famous on twitter. Famous enough so that WWE sees this and finally inducts him into hall of fame, his rightful title.

Apparently it was because of CFO$ wanting a monopoly. Which is hilarious because they're out as well now.
@@beastunleashed657 many say it has to do with the same reason the CFO$ went out. Vince wanted to own those themes but many of them belong to their publishers. Money. That's all.
The guys a certified genius. The amount of memorable themes he wrote is unparalleled.
It feels like a refreshing waterfall shower to see an artistic and prolific non-athlete legend in the business getting recognition and airtime.

Maybe WWE wanted to "update" their general sound in regards to their superstars' entrance theme music. It seems rock music and all of the genres inside of its umbrella are becoming more obscure. I'd say the most mainstream rock these days is bands from the past decades occasionally recording new albums, but they don't usually see anywhere near the same success as the ones they made in their prime. You also have a lot of them that end up drifting more to a "pop" sound to maintain relevancy, which I'm not shitting on, pop has some great music. Most newer rock bands/music seem to be more localized popularity, or cover bands. Metal and it's abyss of sub-genres has a very dedicated fanbase, but it is considerably smaller than the pop/country/rap fanbase.
As I said, the music industry seems to be heavily weighted towards pop, country, and rap. The WWE is big on the image of their superstars, so you don't see many guys walking out to pop music, although it is on the table for the women. Country has a huge fanbase, but it is a very... *secluded* genre and tends to be regional. It's a genre a lot of people either listen to religiously or absolutely despise. So you don't see a lot of that unless you're Jimmy Wang Yang or Lance Cade/Trevor Murdoch. (Aka: jobbers/gimmicky personalities) So that leaves a lot of the theme music turning to rap and hip-hop. I'm not a fan of rap or hip-hop, I love rock & metal. I think rock lends itself far better to the majority of the male roster, although there are exceptions. The theme is supposed to immerse you in the character and immediately fill the arena with the "vibes" and "energy" of that character. That carries far more value in this situation than mainstream appeal or appealing to the audience's overall taste in music. So I think they're making a big blunder on one of the most prominent, immersive, and underrated aspects of their superstars' characters--their theme music and entrances.
Johnston is incredible. For decades he composed music for so many different superstars, and so many iconic ones. I didn't realize until I was well beyond my "Wrasslin' watchin" days that he was the creator of so many different themes. I'm not going to say every theme he made was golden, but he definitely had a great track record and made some of the all-time greats. That's impressive to be able to pump out so many unique, legendary themes that are now nostalgic to millions of people. You'd think he'd get stale or run out of ideas after a while. I can't even imagine not having the list of masterpieces he's created or collaborated on like...

He had a special talent that deserves to be praised in the HoF. They have added plenty of non-athlete people already; Legends who were vital to the long-term success of the WWE with their contributions to things like talent development, commentary, media creation, etc... You'd think their golden goose of entrance theme production for decades would have a secured spot in there. I feel like when the next generation of talent comes in, you're going to see a lot more generic, stock music-esque themes. Unless they opt to fork over a ton of money to license a lot more music from mainstream artists which has mostly always been reserved for just their top talents.

What was the falling out between Jim and Vince about? Jim wouldn't be fired without a reason. He and Jimmy Hart popularized entrance themes that became a norm in the industry even in non wrestling events like MMA and boxing

Jim Johnston is a first ballot WWE hall of famer. Plenty of names in that hall, even leaving out the mostly ridiculous celebrity wing, didn't contribute half as much to the business as this genius did
