    I have honda pilot 2014. I also need to drain the atf and put in genuine honda atf. Would u recommend me changing the external filter also. I bought the car used. I dont know if the previous owner had changed the external filter. Mine have the cooler on the radiator front also.

    Hi Dave, my Honda 2007 Pilot run OK I drive it every day. I parked my Honda 2007 Pilot on a flat surface over night, then open the 17mm nut on the top, then I open the oil plug at the bottom with square 3/8 ratchet, NOTHING come out. (1) Do I need jack the front of the car higher. (2) Do I need to run the car for a while before open the 3/8 square bottom plug. (3) Very strange, my square 3/8 oil plug does NOT have the magnetic piece in there. (4) When checking the fluid level do I need to let the car run and transmission set at "Neutral". I remember that I changed the transmission oil couple time at Honda dealer, due to the cost of Honda dealer charging, this is the FIRST time I change transmission at home. After seeing nothing come out, and since the 17mm top nut already open I just add one quart of new Honda ATF-DW1, is this a good thing to do ? Thanks Dave.

      Well not sure what you are doing. If you opened the drain plug for the trans and nothing came out then either something is blocking the drain, or it's not the drain plug you removed. If the vehicle drove fine then I would have to conclude that their was fluid inside trans. Also if you do eventually get fluid to drain measure what comes out so you have an idea how much new fluid you need to add.

    Nice job on the video, Dave. On my 2019 Ridgeline, it's really difficult to get to that fill plug with the heater hoses in the way. I've been told that I can just use the dip stick tube for refilling. That seems so easy. Is that really an option? Thanks for your reply.

    • @Dave12418974
      @Dave12418974  4 роки тому

      Tube is too small. Best way is to use trans funnel with aprox 1 ft hose. Also good idea to blow off any loose dirt before removing fill cap. The caps can be tight. Also lay some clean towels or rags around fill area and cardboard under vehicle just in case you spill. Just take your time filling.

      @@Dave12418974 Hi Dave, thanks for the reply. I just discovered some difference between my Ridgeline and the Pilot you worked on here. On the Ridgline, you can't even see the fill port from above as it is directly below the two heater hoses. You actually have to crawl in and onto the engine to get your hand on it. Also, the fill tube is 20 mm in diameter. That's over 3/4", making it large enough to fit a transmission fluid funnel into it. I too drained out MORE than the manual stated, at least 3.6 quarts. That's 300 mL more that what I should have measured. My question now is...Was it over-filled by the manufacturer? And should I correct that mistake by only adding only 3.3 quarts as the manual advises? Also note that when I had checked the fluid level, before the job and using different guidelines prescribed, I consistently got readings well above the full line, ie. the second hole at the bottom of the dip stick. I'm wondering what your thoughts were on this? Looking forward to your reply. Thanks.

      Hi Dave, a few thoughts; is the vehicle level when you drained it? Also fluid does expand when hot. Yes there is hoses and wiring harnesses in the way on most models. Would have been nice if they had a nice long fill tube as many vehicles use to have. As far as the level. If the fluid didnt get foamy at the previous level it may have been ok at that level. I don't actually build transmissions but you could ask a transmission specialist who may have experience with those transmissions could give you possibly better advice on the best final level.

Than my mechanic told me i will burn transmission clutches. That you think?

    Hey! If customer went to the dealership and asked for "transmission fluid change" service. Would the tech just drain few quarts of old fluid and just fill what came out or they do a flush? I just want to make sure if fluid change is usually enough as not all fluid comes out.

    • @jkxss
      @jkxss 11 місяців тому

      I know it's a 2 year old comment, but you would have to ask if the dealership has the special Honda transmission flush machine to actually do a flush. Otherwise if you took it to a regular mechanic who can't afford a super expensive Honda-specific transmission flushing machine then I would expect it to just be a one time drain and fill (though you would have to do it a few times to really get good results).

    Thanks for the info. I had a 2000 Honda Accord v6, one of the worse automatic transmissions Honda ever made. Instead of flushing, filling, running the car, and repeating the process, I would just drain and refill the ATF with each oil change. Basically same thing and oil is never more than 15k miles old. I also had an external transmission cooler. I gave that accord to a family friend with 135k miles. It’s still on the road today with over 200k miles - mind you this is all city driving miles.

      Hi Lupton It is also an internal filter in 2015 only serviced with trans out and disassembled. Best way to prevent wear is performing routine multiple fluid changes as shown in the video using OEM Honda fluid or fluid that exceeds Honda specs before it gets to dirty/burn't. Hope this helps you.

      If you have a dipstick you can easily visually check the fluid condition. If not you will have to sample fluid from a case drain or if know drain at an overflow level plug with the engine off. The best way to do that is to remove any shields that maybe in the way and then look for the drain bolt. Make sure you clean around the bolt first, then slowly loosen it while holding a white paper towel to see if its clean or not. If the fluid appears clean then they did their job of completely changing out the old fluid. Fluid change (multiple times) is the best policy with the proper spec fluid!

  • @jimw544
    @jimw544 4 роки тому +1

    Honda says 4q trans change at 30k and a 10q change at 45k. So doing 2 or 3 drain and fills is just washing out the remaining 6q. not sure that's needed.

    • @Dave12418974
      @Dave12418974  4 роки тому

      The cleaner the fluid the better. Unless it's too dirty (example black and gritty) indicating excessive wear then just leave it be.

      Good question! Not sure but with many oem specific fluids there maybe some full synthetics that are rated at of above the oe specs for many manufacturers. So that's why I stated that. I have personally used Full Synthetic Universal ATF in my vehicles that have almost 200,000 miles on them still on the original trans with no issues and good shift quality! Best to do your research as per year and make of your trans first. Hope this answer helps you!

      Hi Roger, a good question. This vehicle only has an internal trans filter (internal screen) that is only serviced by removal of the Trans and also disassembly. Vehicles with a serviceable filter we do change after exchanging the fluid a few times. The purpose of at least changing out the dirty/burn't fluid is to extend the transmission life as long as possible.

    • @Dave12418974
      @Dave12418974  5 років тому +1

      I don't believe it does. The internal screen will not get clogged if you routinely change out your fluid. 30,000 - 40000 miles is average.

    • @Dave12418974
      @Dave12418974  5 років тому

      Great question rudieder! Yes at low RPMs as possible including reverse. But not recommended on vehicles where you can't turn off the traction control. And also you don't want to run axles/c.v. Joints unloaded at high speeds as this can and will damage the CV joints! If you can't safely run vehicle through the gears (at low rpms) while lifted then just shift through pausing in each gear selector including reverse. Still doing a multiple drain and fill is still a better process than just a single drain and fill.
