As a Slovak, I wish I've seen this video earlier...
It's very nice to see a foreigner come in and actually like our trains, there is still a ton of space for improvement, such as modernizing main railway lines, but that will take ages.
Between Košice and Žilina, the scenery is great! Much better than on the other half, but it does come with a cost of being slower.
The train you picked is not an InterCity train, it's a basic fast train which goes each 2 hours from both ends, IC trains are far quicker, but don't go as often.
Žilina - Považská Bystrica and Púchov - Bratislava-Rača run at 160km/h.
Great video! I'd love to see more from you.

Thanks! Such an amazing country. I'm referring to intercity as a train that goes from one city to another over a long distance (not actual IC.) Can't wait to come back and try some more of your trains out 😁

Ahoj! I'm a West-European (just like Dylan) but I've travelled quite a lot (and keep travelling) through Central Europe, which is arguably my favourite part of the continent (I've even learnt some Hungarian and Czech). This includes several trips to Solvakia, with the latest one just last month. Honestly, I believe the railways in Central Europe to be ok. They're not super modern or super fast, they're a bit basic but there's no reason for Westerners to patronize you. You have kept a sense what could be called public service, with regular trains to small towns that would'nt even be served at all in Western Europe and your railway companies, including ZSSK, widely offer services such as carrying bicycles on board, renting bicycles even in small stations etc. All kinds of services that have come to be (dis)regarded as "old-fashioned" and hence dropped in the West.

The views are really nice, a little bit hindered by the weather on the video. The train goes along the Váh river valley for much of the journey and it is literred by castles, much like the Trenčín one shown. A lot of them are situated right above the rails, so you get a nice look. The best part would be the High Tatras though, which were unfortunately covered by clouds this time, but do check some Google pictures of them!

unfortunately many of the small local trains (called motorka - motor train, or čangov where I came from - because it did not have a separate loco) were cancelled over a decade ago. I remember growing up in the south west Slovakia, about 50km from Bratislava, back then many cities and villages were connected by these local mini railways. I always liked riding the trains rather then a bus. Thank you for the video! Brings back memories :) Best of luck

How much I miss Slovakia as always getting the train from Kosice to Presov for many years now as fly London to Kosice. Kosice Station had a refurb I think 5 years now as it needed it. The journey you made normally I get Presov-Kysak-Poprad Tatry in the summer months for a day trip. ZSSK does the job and I like how they name one of the trains after a famous Slovak bar called Horalky. Before direct flights to Slovakia I used to go from Blava to Kysak-Presov and back in 1998 it was about 220 crowns around 3.10. great journey and Slovaks are such hospitable and friendly people. Amazing beauty of the slovak forests, mountains and hills through this journey. if you ever go back jump on the Kosice-Presov train and get the Green train it shows it's age and makes the most crazy screech sound when stopping but built and made to last it must be over 50 years old.

And a good price as well, especially for first class. If you compare this 400 km trip to a trip from Groningen to Vlissingen in The Netherlands (about as far you can go by train in one go), which is about 360 km, Slovakia is a lot cheaper. A second class trip would cost 27 euro in NL, first class for the same trip is 44 euros...

You take me to places that I will probably never go too. Seeing sights and insights into peoples everyday lives that you can only see from land travel. There are one or two bucket list items added. Amtrak and The Indian Pacific in Australia combined with an ashes tour is top of the list. Have you ever considered the trans Siberian? and how have you done these vids? How come Košice has such a fantastic modern light airy station when the main Hlavna station in Bratislava is such a slum? A most depressing gateway to what is a very attractive city. Incidentally the train you travelled on looked a lot better than the one I came on from Vienna but I think it was actually OBB stock and of course a much shorter journey.

    • @nikodzepina2876

Well, we are ofter wondering ourselves. First, it's worth mentioning that all railway stations are state owned/managed - hence a municipality has zero say and power to change anything. Košice railway station was built in 1960s in a modernist architectural style and it was updated just quite recently (some 10 years ago) thru a conversion into a mall/station. Bratislava Central station, on the other hand combines a late 19th century part with a 1980s section. It never undegone an upgrade - due to many "reasons": attempted public-private partnership project (failed and resulted in a lenghty lawsuit), several conflicting feasibility studies (proposals for moving the actual station elsewhere - west/eastwards, converting another station in BA into a Central one, etc.) and also due to purely political problems (an average, i.e. rural, Slovak hates the idea of the state investing in a "greedy" Bratislava). Yes, that's the way we do things around here... 😅

Well done on reviewing 19-70 Ampeer ! They ordered another batch 7 x 1st class cars with renewed interiors, the seating looks almost identical to the new DB ICE standards. Currently deployed on internal services through Slovakia. It looks something like this : e.dennikn.sk/minuta/1936777
I like that the interior, though simple, it is clean, confortable and worth the class surcharge. Unfortunately for CFR Calatori in Romania, the 1st class "standards" decreased, due to low-cost materials and cheapest options used in 1st class modernisations / projects. The seats have the exact width like the 2nd class ones (check 19-76 Ameet for reference as the latest scam) - moreoever, the 1st class surcharge is +50% of the usual 2nd class ticket. Most of the people I've talked to want the prices adjusted to attract more passengers in 1st class provided this service is available, because the seating capacity in 2nd class is limited, and passengers are put in the situation of booking 1st class for a seat onboard, or consider other means of transport...

There are 2 routes between Bratislava and Kosice. You took the north one - it's the nicer one. A few years ago, I took that train. It had brought me straight into the 80's. The jingle noise of the carriages, I'd rather not mention the toilets, 1st class looked like a 3rd class. 2nd class looked like you don't want to experience. I did not have any high expectations, as I went there biking and previously been pleased travelling by a 1st class, but this time I was more than disappointed. Because I definitely did not get a first class experience. Just the scenery in Slovakia made that up to me, as that is beautiful

You should also check out the newer regional trains like the europanter (electric) and mj861 (diesel). Your train seems to be combination recent builds from the late 2000s then second half of the train are Czechoslovakian era railway Carriages. In the United States it's common to see some 1970s era amfleets coupled to a 2012-2018 Viewliner sleeping car on long distance trains that operate to or from the Northeast Corridor.

I was quite pleasantly surprised at how clean and comfortable the Slovakian train appeared. However, I would not have been best pleased at paying first class to land a non-facing direction of travel seat adjacent to a pillar. SNORT! That said, you did rather well with your window views even if you had to twist some 120 degrees to achieve them. Full marks for persistence on that! Cheers from the picky senior Aussie traveller.

If you'd like a blast from the past you should do a report on Germany's MRB (Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn) service between Leipzig and Chemnitz. Because of a lack of rolling stock they currently (and for the time being) use hilariousely outdated ancient east german DR materiel, hauled/pushed by a diesel engine. The use of these cars has prompted reactions ranging from amusement among enthusiasts to annoyance and anger among pretty much everyone else. Make sure to check it out. You will probably regret it. 😅
On the bright side it will also give you the chance to have a look at beautiful Leipzig Hbf, one of the largest stations in europe. 😊

The producer rarely manages to get a forward-facing seat. I know that having half the seats facing each way is a fairly standard practice in most of the developed World, but I can tell you from experience Americans really do not like to ride backwards, and also I've noticed that there are a lot of seats on these trains that either have very little or no usable window area, which would be maddening for anyone who took the train for the scenic journey. You do a nice job in presenting these reports.
