It was a shame that Anthony never appeared in the very last special "Barbara's Old Ring" at Christmas 2012. When Anthony was not in it, it was noticeable. He may have not said much, but he was probably the most liked member of the family which the audience actually cared about and sided with.

Caroline Aherne said in an interview to promote their 2006 special "Queen of Sheba" that the character of Dave Best was poorly written in the first season. She said they totally misjudged the personality of Dave, who in season one was a "Jack the Lad" cocky man, always had a sharp reply, could be very rude and also very crude. After the first season had aired, both Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne choose to change his persona, and said that married life changed Dave. Remember there was a one year gap before season two aired, and then they toned down the character. He became kinder, warmer but more simple in personality, as a result of being married to Denise, and in a sense being henpecked by her. Also his personality change also had to happen, as the season one version of Dave would never have stayed with the selfish and lazy Denise for long.
