This is why I hate favoritism, it's nothing but trouble for the family

What security are they going to give? The deeds to their house perhaps.

It sounded like they just wanted the money talking about using some for a vacation

If the grandparents have "the big suburban house" then let them invest in Jake's company

Money exposes who people really are. It is such a character reveal.

This is why I went no contact with my toxic family. Moving out and far away from the East Coast to the West Coast gave me distance.

Since when does a vacation home for the grandparents become part of the cousin Jake's business plan? Time to break it off and go no contact.

You should always have a good -- and believable -- story ready for any situation in which someone asks for your savings or inheritance or bonus windfall. Something like, "I don't have it in cash. It's all tied up in investments, and I lose big bucks if I take it out early." Or say you used it as the down payment on your house. Keep your banking information hidden -- deeply. If you have a really aggressive family, put the money in certificates of deposit of savings bonds in a bank none of them use.

I hope Alex got his money back?
If something like this happened to me I would consult a lawyer or someone to write up a contract that states if I share this money for your business idea and it doesn't impress or work then you are to return the money to me in full with interest. Then have them sign it with the lawyer present

Alex transitioned into a black man at the very end. This story is not cohesive!

Alex is a jerk and dragged this out a lot longer than he needed to. As soon as he was given the ultimatum of handing over the money or being cut out of the family, Alex should have said "see ya!" End of story.

    Grandma jumps in?
Like she jumps in at the cathouse?
Alex can’t even do a decent job at the louche bar.
Grandpa will be reduced to cleaning up at the cathouse
Grandma will be reduced to boffing geriatrics at the VA hospital
