  • NEW PROJECT!! Have you thought about converting a patch of grass or lawn into future groceries? but are not sure where to start?.... Big patches of lawn can be daunting so I've been tackling my edible gardens one section or project at a time....and that is exactly what we are doing today!
    I already have raised garden beds, living shade, a food forest fence screen, a wildlife pond, and a kitchen garden...But today is something a little bit different. A step above the rest and a bit of an experiment...
    I recently came across syntropic agroforestry which is similar to what I have been creating with permaculture food forests (but on another level). I use succession planting to grow annuals while I wait for the trees to get established but Syntropic Agroforestry incorporates so much more!!! So this garden will be my first syntropic experiment and I'm very excited to get started! SUBSCRIBE for future updates 🎉

    We need more of this. I'm a firm believer in growing food, not grass. I hate mowing grass, and it's such a waste of water, fertilizer, and pesticides to raise a crop you can't even eat.

      Yep I’d much prefer avocado and mango 🥭 😝

      @Disabled.Megatron That was definitely a consideration, but I live in USDA zone 7b which lemongrass will not survive outdoors. The one time we had lemongrass, I brought it indoors over the winter, and it died from lack of sunlight.

      How to mow edge bEtween bed and grass

    • @matthewfarrell317
      @matthewfarrell317 11 місяців тому

      Grass is the easiest to grow and maintain. Unless you are really into they require zero input and only a mow.
      Food forests require the most work. Especially if you grow in small spaces.
      Also you forget most of our food comes from eating said grass lol

    Hi Holly! I do not miss the Perth sand, we had hydrophobic sand on our property in the hills. Now I have clay gallore in NZ 😂. Love watching your videos, I have neen think of doing something similar but now having this example from you I think I can totally fit it in our back yard.

    Hi Holly! Love your urban garden videos. Love that you are inspiring others to grow their own food in an urban setting. I have a tiny back yard space and at last count had over 30 perennial fruits and veg, in a semi food forest type setting, as well as a thriving bucket garden of urban veg. My main back yard space is around 70m2. I’ve never actually measured it. Lol. Thanks for your content!

    Ooh, mangoes and avocados, yum! I planted my avocado trees last year, but they just sat there all spring and summer not doing anything - maybe a handful of new leaves but that was it! I'm hoping it's a case of "first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap". Fingers crossed because I love avocados and they are so expensive to buy. And I have since learned that they will stay on the tree for months, so you can pick them slowly over a long period. Sounds perfect for the home grower! Here's hoping we both have many delicious avocados in our future. :)

      Avocados can be a bit sassy! I’m just hoping mine survives the summer and finds it’s feet. How exciting to be able to pick Avocados from home!! Sending your tree good growing vibes! 🥑

      I've found spoons, forks, and knives. Not the plastic kind I use as plant markers, but the silverware from inside that was accidentally dropped into the compost bin. I wanted to scream.

    I love watching your videos - you are always planting something that I'm just about to, or just have! 😂
    I'm on the opposite side of Australia, I wish you were closer so I could pick your brain (trying to work out what to put in my gaps).
    My style of gardening seems to be quite similar.
    I started replacing my lawn last year. I love that I barely have to mow now. Soon I hope to have no mowing (except the verge, council regulations state that I have to have 2m of grass).

    Wrt growing your own mulch, seeding "lawn" areas with perennial green manures (like clover) and using a bagging mower, will give you a lot of fertile mulch.

    Awesome project Holly - I'm looking forward to seeing the progress. What tomato variety are you using in the seed bomb? It's my first real go at growing this year, and our tomatoes were doing SOOO well, but then quickly died off.

    • @SustainableHolly
      @SustainableHolly  11 місяців тому +1

      These were pink Thai egg and tommy toe. I prefer small varieties as they don’t struggle as much with the heat and lack of water we have in summer.

    Hi Holly, have you discovered a product called Soil Solver yet? The area I'm in is mostly river sand, and in addition to compost, I added Soil Solver to help with moisture retention.

    • @SustainableHolly

      I was planning on it but got carried away and didn’t end up adding any. This is only half the garden so I will be doing a round two after summer

    Hi there, thanks so much for this video. How have you found that canola/chicken straw mulch? I have 2 bags and so need to use it (I'm also in sandy Perth!) but was worried that it might have been sprayed with herbicides when growning. Any thoughts / tips? Thanks so much, Tara

    Think this is the perfect video to ask. I know you grow sweet potatoes. We dont eat the leaves the partner loves the tubers. What do you think about growing them around feijoas? Every time we have grown them they have stayed near the service.

    "I wish I had a lttle digger..." Be glad, be very glad, that you don't live in N America with gophers or in Europe with moles... Oops, my bad, We live in Oz with a multitude of fauna that have urbanised to take perverse advantage of an urban gardners doomed efforts to harvest their crops before the opportunists (including neighbours) do. 😁
