I'm glad you had the empathy and ability to buy the horse and give him a better home and life. He's more than likely very happy to be where he is now, with humans who take into consideration what a horse needs and actually provide for him. 💯👌

@@pamelameckley5040 thank you 🥰 we actually took in 4 Total "in need" horses now from craigslist. I can't believe how many people get horses and don't research before buying. We got them knowing they may never be ridden and need vet care. But we were also very selective and wanted to make sure that these horses could be with us forever. We're not a rescue either, we literally just wanted to give some horses in need a better home. Luckily everyone we've gotten were just 100-150 pounds underweight and no big issues. We got them all basic care like feet, teeth floating, general exams and so on. But since the horses have been here I truly believe they are happier 💕 we absolutely love them all

@@JSbarrelracing tbh rodeos aren’t all bad. What makes them bad is that rodeos are a sport in which humans choose to partake in unethical actions. Just like in most other exploitative sports. There’s quite a few people who love their animals and actually care for them the way they should, and some of those people participate in controversial sports like jumping or barrel racing. I’m not really a fan of tying competitions, or bull riding. But pretty much everything can be done in a non cruel way.

I have a horse "flipper" in a nearby town. They recently sold a horse that was advertised as "kid broke" an older gentleman bought the horse which was drugged when he tried it. Took it home and it went batshit crazy bucked him off and broke his collarbone. What's disgusting to me is the fact the advertised him as KID BROKE a literal child could have been on the back of that horse.
They also do NOT quarantine new horses and put them next to boarders and their own horses. They have had multiple outbreaks of strangles as a result.

    • @Lizzard2060
      @Lizzard2060 2 роки тому

Well, sometimes, or sometimes they want you to call and talk to them because they can figure out if you are a newer horse person that maybe started as an adult and has little experience or is someone with years of experience in the industry and can easily tell people different prices with different "add ons". An example I know of is a woman who was green and in her 40's when she bought her first horse and was sold a green horse. The owner/trainer also sold her on 18 mo of board + training when not a day was put on this horse and the woman was severely injured twice (like lost fingers injured). She took the horse to another trainer who got on and told her what we knew all along, that the horse didn't have 30 days of training on it, let alone 18 mo. Most trainers have 30, 60, or 90 days of training as an option, but this trainer was happy to just collect twice her board fee every month for a horse she bought for $1 and sold to the uneducated woman for within two weeks for $5,000. I really prefer to see posted prices so that everyone is fully aware of what is offered and each amenity level because I've seen too many people get taken.
People who have negotiated for 20 hours of office work per week have ended up having their husbands and whole family come to install fencing and fix machinery. I've not seen a negation that is not in writing work out where someone is not taken advantage of to an extreme. It's always they need help with one more thing.

I love the opening...just fabulous - the con. Always caution on Craigslist whether selling or buying. Con artists and predators abound but also good folks too! Sadly I have seen too many horses sold for give away prices or given away and they end up in rescue homes which are really hoarders and then the animals suffer negligence. Years ago I watched horses regularly arrive at a property next door to where I was living. I thought at first they were a training facility or boarding but as time progressed the animals began to show signs of negligence from hooves and weight loss. I took photos and turned those photos in to those who handle these issues and eventually over 76 animals were removed in emaciated condition and worse. From the front of the property it was never visible that they could possibly have that many animals. When these animals came in they were in beautiful condition. Always be cautious even in selling your animal.

Multiple photo's including tacked and untacked (unless too young to be ridden), video as an option (we pretty much all have it on our phones), how often horse is ridden and what type of riding is done, background in training, any awards ever won or shows where the horse has places highly, reference from farrier and vet who sees the horse, offer to have you see vet records to show any faults or issues medically the horse has ever had as well as proving the horse has received all shots and is utd. NO DOWN PAYMENT to hold or see horse. You should not pay a single penny until you see the horse and should not ever be forced to shell out money to do so or to buy the horse when a seller claims to have many more interested buyers. You should consider your choice carefully and not be rushed as this is an animal that will require your care and money for a long time. They should allow for you to have your own vet come and do a vet check if they have nothing to hide and do a vet check or be prepared to potentially shell out money for whatever may be wrong with this horse as horses can be drugged for pain and anxiety. Always have the owner catch the horse and allow you to catch the horse. Always have the owner mount and show off any moves or see the horse at all gaits so you can see any lameness or faults. Also, always do this because you don't want to get on a bronc or try to catch a horse that bites and/or kicks. Owner willing to disclose all vices such as wind sucking or heaves that may not be yet treated by a vet as they just put on a cribbing collar. Discussion of personality and herd hierarchy. Are you getting a very subservient horse to the other 10 it pastures with or the top of the pack?

I have a friend that bought a horse on impulse for $1200 no papers. The horse Hendo training of value. They didn’t even ride the horse to show her what the horse could do under saddle. I couldn’t believe she did it. She should’ve got the horse for free I would’ve paid no more than a couple hundred dollars for that horse. The confirmation was on a level of fair. Every time she rode the horse she would have an incident of getting dumped. It would throw its head and completely bruised her face and bloodied her face. I had racehorses for years and show horses. And you’re absolutely right it’s about the training. I always had ground work done on my horses before anybody even got on them. When I sent them out to a good trainer they would say so easy because you did all the groundwork. They were calm, well adjusted, trusting before they even had a saddle on them. Oh my goodness I can’t believe she paid $1200 for that horse. Some old horse trader talked her out of it and ended up getting a free horse. I tried to tell her I could’ve helped her get a horse for hardly anything that had nice confirmation had manners and some training under it. There’s so many people right now with economy the way it is trying to find a good home for the horse, that has some miles under it and some training. What a waste time of money and energy. And I feel bad for the horse.

So I’m 28 now, but back when I was a teenager, finding a reasonably priced horse on Craigslist was super easy - at least where I was from. In fact, I owned 8 horses and all of them came from Craigslist. None of them were well trained, but had the price tag to match that. I don’t think I paid more than $800 for any of them. One of them I bought for $100. I’ve been out of horses for about 6 years now because of life circumstances, but recently I went on Craigslist to see what the horse market was like and I was shook! Crazy crazy prices! There was one horse that was 17 years old with several health issues and basic training for $15,000!!! Boy have times changed!

I agree that people on craigslist have no idea how to price horses. When I have asked for the vet records to confirm shots/coggins they have said they didn't need shots or coggins because the horse doesn't leave their property. As a longtime horse person I will sometimes go look if they have the must go ASAP and see if it's a prospect I can flip with some months of training but I run over my prices of what needs to be done with the animal and what 8k or 10k would get me. Did the horse win futurities? Did the horse show and go to national championships? Is the horse papered? Then I bring out my vet costs to get to a point where I could be able to have my kid ride the horse safety. . . . . .gelding, shots, coggins, transport, 90 days of training, plus paying for him to eat and have shelter that whole time and Yeah, I will talk that 8K horse down to 1K by explaining facts to the owner including age and conformation and what is likely to be their ability level. If they complain about how much they paid I will tell them they got taken and that is their problem and how the horse will keep eating until they offload him onto me. Obviously I am looking for lameness and checking everything out thoroughly and I bring my ropes and leads because I may need to do a bit of training there to see if the horse gives to pressure and can problem solve to pick up his feet. This normally makes the seller feel the horse is going to a competent home as well when they may have been bitten or fight with a horse who resource guards or wont even let them pick up his feet.
Also, in your promo for your new boarding facility you missed duct tape, stumps to hold up the gates that were angled down so far by the weight they dragged on the ground so you had to lift it onto a stump for it to set parallel to the ground. Plus hay, grain, and water being extra. Also, stall cleaning should be extra and the stalls should be "homemade" and not close properly and when people complain just say they are not slamming them hard enough or grab the person's lead rope to tie it shut. Then more duct tape and nails sticking out in the stalls. I say this as someone who keeps my horses at home but have worked for many boarding facilities and my friends board sooooo. . . . . . .I have seen some stupid stuff. Oh and your own private tack space is another added cost. $1200 because they need to build it and you can't take it with you when you leave sooo they keep your tack area you paid for. Wish I was joking when a barn asked that of my friend. Also, the 1,234 means they wont post a price for everyone to know so you have to call them to get an answer and it's normally a LOT for what they have. They are trying to get everything they can out of unknowledgeable horse people.

That was very informative for someone like me who isn't an equestrian, just interested in horses and listening to a well-delivered rant (Raleigh, not your comment).

@@meloniedropik3539 It's like a mechanic going to look at a car. They know what work likely needs to be done and what generally goes wrong with that model/year/type of car and when the person says they paid XYZ, you just break the news to them that they overpaid while you check under the hood and explain everything that will need fixing and what the car is actually worth and what work is needs. As Raleigh said about overbreeding there are auctions every week for horses that are worth having good homes. In my car example, plenty of other people selling cars so the ability to walk away when you know more than the seller is a powerful thing. To any first time buyer at any age it is always recommended you take a long time horse person with you and even after 30 years I still take my long time horse person (friend) with me because maybe they see something I miss when I am in the saddle. Maybe they are looking at a different angle. Maybe they see a different side and poor attitude I don't feel when using another person's saddle. Two heads are always better than one and if anything does go wrong then I do have another real horsewoman there to help and things have gone wrong before.

Loved this vid! Made me laugh and I needed that! I do disagree about geldings with nice bloodlines though. I show QH's and I can typically take a look at a QH gelding's papers to get a good idea of how the horse is bred, how it will likely be built, and what it has been bred to do by looking at any foundation bloodlines. I have certain lines I avoid and those I look for. Though I won't make bank breeding, if I am looking to compete in a certain discipline... I can find valuable information there in those pesky papers! Plus.. with QH's you can't compete AQHA circuit if your gelding is not registered. 🥰 Just personal preference and I know that every horse won't fit the mold in my head though. Also just my two cents!

I bought my mare a fresh from the trainer, with papers she, had magic mount, and Boston Mac on the Sire side.
Two eyed jack on the mare side.
For $1400, I knew the trainer and he recommended her.
My horse I bought from my neighbor was a tall black gelding.
He had a brown and a blue eye.
On his sire side was Two eyed Jack
    Mare side Boston Mac.
When my vet came out to inspect his health and soundness. He looked at him and said it's a Boston Mac horse. My breeding Stallion is Boston Mac looks just like him.
    I paid $1000 for him.

Craigslist ads are always sketchy. On the other hand, I bought one of my horses from "reputable" breeder here in Washington, and I got there and they literally had ever single horses feet over grown, with their excuse of "it's hard to get a farrier out here" (in the middle of Eastern WA where there's TONS of horse ranches). Several mares with bad injuries needing a vet. Almost every horse (including the one I bought) had scars from past injuries, and they even had a stallion with OBVIOUS ring worm in with mares breeding them.... I seriously feel I rescued the mare I bought from there after seeing that.
So many horror stories. They had a mare fall in an irrigation ditch and die (with a suckling at her side who now is orphaned).... My mare apparently was stolen before I bought her.... their excuse is that they're old now and it's hard to do things on their own these days, yet they literally have 50+ horses and are continuing to breed.
    So many shady sellers.

that part about the grade stallion reminded me of a lady, who has a mare, I'm not sure if she is a cross or not, but even according to the lady, she has some really bad conformation, yet the lady still bred her, and her reason was that she likes her mare, and wants her "mini-her" for sentimental reasons... the colt that was born also has bad conformation, according to the lady "the stallion didn't correct it", has barely any training, because surprise, surprise, when you don't have time to regurarly spend time with the mare, you won't have any for the foal, and is now on sale for i don't even know, maybe half a year? because yes, she cannot afford to keep him.... even though she wanted the foal for sentimental reasons to keep....

15:54 damn Raleigh 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Joking aside, I have a question. Horse lover that does not own horses here lol, but if stallions are not as dangerous as people say, why not leave them intact? I hear mixed advice, some people say a stallion doesn't = dangerous and they've raised many a stallion with perfect or even better temperaments than geldings. Then some say, absolutely NOT to own a stallion unless kept for breeding bc they are dangerous or what not.
Like with dogs, I would keep my pup's balls for a while until bone development is complete and then when he gets to a certain age, maybe chop to lower risk of cancer. I think that is more humane in cases where the horse is not allowed to breed or relieve. But in general, aside from those factors, is it really that dangerous to own a stallion if he is not around mares?
