  • I bought this old jukebox amp because it looked like a relatively cheap way to get a relatively powerful tube amp: 20 watts per channel. Upon receiving the package, I promptly stuck the amp on a shelf to wait until I had the time to give it the once over. After careful inspection, I discovered that most of the wiring, including the leads from the transformers, had disintegrating insulation. Moreover, the leads for the power transformer and one of the output transformers not only had disintegrating insulation but also corroded, brittle copper wire. There was plenty of rust to contend with as well. This video shows the restoration of the amp from a rusty, crusty, hunk of steel to an attractive amp with lovely sound!
Correction: The bias supply is connected, via 250k resistors, to the grids of the output tubes, not the cathodes. Hence the term "grid biased." Duh.

Amazing skills here. Ive just started trying to do a re-cap and bring my R-2620 back to life for my Jukebox and when i saw every wire removed from the amp, my jaw dropped. I do modern automotive repair and was comfortable reading a wiring diagram but these old machines are much more challenging. Seeing you use it as a road map to re-wire this thing was fantastic.

Is be interested to hear how you make out. I've now done a second rebuild, this time with all new components. I'm not satisfied with the result, though. It has slewing distortion at 10 kHz. That's at full power, and it probably sounds fine at modest volume. Still, I'm not satisfied with this outcome. Do I know how to fix the problem? No.

This amp has screw terminals next to the output transformers. Good for spade connectors, but bare wire is fine, too.

Sorry to leave you hanging. Did you figure it out? These amps did have a ridiculous number of connection options.
