Welcome to Lancaster Hi-Fi: Vintage audio gear and plenty of music! Most of my videos are about repair, restoration, and modification of audio gear and generally include music sound clips, but I've got a few videos focussed solely on the music. I work mainly on amplifiers, receivers, preamplifiers, turntables, and speakers. I've built several resto/mod tube amps and have more in the works, but I love my solid state gear as well.

Simple Fixes for a Vintage Turntable
Переглядів 1,2 тис.21 день тому
I diagnose and repair a direct-drive, fully automatic, T4P (P-mount), turntable from the mid-80's: a Sony PS-LX410. A faulty cartridge produced no sound, and shorted wiring (apparently) disabled the other functions. A new cartridge restored the sound, and rearranging some uninsulated wires restored full functionality. By the way, whereas I just finished editing the video, all of the footage was...
The Best Tube Amp $40 Can Buy! Converting a Westinghouse Console Amp
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
It's a single-ended amp using 7591 pentode tubes on the outputs, 12AX7 triode tubes in the preamp and gain stages, and a 6CA4 rectifier tube for the power supply. OK! So all the parts I added made the amp cost more than $40, but I didn't buy any of those parts specifically for this amp. Rather, I rebuilt the amp using things I already had on hand, and I kept the original tubes and transformers ...
Another Beautiful Phase Linear Preamp! The 4000
Переглядів 492Місяць тому
I bought the Phase Linear 4000 one year ago, restored it to good working condition, used it for a few months, and sold it in spring 2024. In this video, I show what I did and how this preamp works.
Vintage Preamp Restoration: Phase Linear 2000
Переглядів 761Місяць тому
The Phase Linear 2000 is a thing of beauty! This preamplifier was not designed by Bob Carver, and it's simple in comparison to the model 4000 (but that will be the subject of another video). I do a basic restoration that includes replacing out-of-spec electrolytic capacitors, reflowing stressed solder joints, treating switches and potentiometers, polishing the shiny face and knobs, and restorin...

Переглядів 2 тис.Місяць тому
Looking for a vintage, top-of-the-line Marantz, Pioneer, or Sansui receiver? The Sansui 881 might be your best buy. At 63 watts per channel, it has plenty of power for most users, and it has the looks and sound quality you expect from Sansui.
Should You Upgrade Your Cables?

I Must Build an SET Tube Amp With Type 45 Triodes! Why?
Restoring cassette decks is not for everyone. It requires one heck of a lot patience. That said, it's incredibly rewarding to get one restored. Idler tyres can be madening. I'm about to venture into my CT F9191. Thanks for the videos.
curious what the age is on the Pinnacle Speakers? Thanks for the video -- needing to address static on a Sony HP-179A when adjusting volume. New Sub!
I have a pair of Opera M-15 speakers and a pair of JBL L55 Lancer speakers, even with single ended tube amps my bass is fine. Now my AR4 speakers are another story.
Beautiful
I just built my own TNT FleXy Table® using the TNT web page as a design guide. Mine is 48” wide x 16” deep with 6 3/4” x 36” threaded rods. My turntable and Pioneer RTR tape deck are on the top. My pioneer amp, tuner and receiver are in the middle, with my records on the bottom. In order to accommodate the records one of the shelves is only half the with of the unit. The worst part was spinning down all those nuts. I live in Lancaster County, is Lancaster HIFI just a channel name or an actual store?
Do you know how to get a vinyl engine account? I tried for a long time but nothing changed on the website.
Taking into account what you say and the audible hiss in your video, you have been away from good tape decks your entire life....
I have a pair of these I think they are alright I kept them cause most of my headphones are open back but they feel underwhelming
Try to resell your digital files
Cheap scotch and expletives??? Syd Little would never stoop so low! 🤣
That Scotch was not cheap! Only single malt was consumed in the making of this video.
@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi Laphroaig Select is considered cheap!
Oh, of course it is.
@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi maybe it's not where you are, but one get buy it here for about 35GBP. That's cheap. You can buy blended malts for a lot more.
28GBP looking now
Merry Christmas
My experience is the same as yours. I have vinyl, CDs and I have gone back to my old JVC turntable of the 80s. I have inherited vinyl. I have inherited my parents mid 60s Kriesler Multisonic Stereo 6 radiogram. Records sound better to me. I wash the old records too! 😊👍🏻
Love it 🔥
you have tin ears and are easy to please. I also gather that you listen to basic music that is not that demanding. Most of the speakers you mention (with a few exceptions) are meh at best. NHT 3.3's for me. Otherwise I agree! Merry Christmas!
Dam, good haul
G l o r i o u s ! Tubes are simply Awesome to see in action!🌹🌷☀️✨
Before there was internet I owned 200 albums around 50 cassette tapes and easily 200 cds then I bought a home computer in the 90’s if I was a teen now I don’t think I would buy music on any physical format but since i bought albums the day they hit the music store I might as well listen to them
I thought about purchasing one of these, but after seeing the insides, I passed. I ended up buying the F4242 much easier to restore. The head was in excellent shape hardly used so I got lucky.
If you know how to maintain your tape deck and keep the roller and the tape path clean. You should be fine.
Damn it if you're "not wrong" about all this
I had the cx27 angd cx17 i found the cx17 had a better balanced sound and didn't need that extra woofer. These sound very nice!
Agree vintage speakers sound the best I've had many of them repaired and sold them .played with them at a very young age I just loved stereos from tube amp to transistors and now chips analog..I did keep a set of vintage BIC venture with the 10 inch drivers horn and paper dome tweeters.. however I don't like a ported box liveing in a Apt your can't be rocking people next door..the bass Carry's bad...so with all the different types of speakers we have worked on I don't need something huge so we bought a set of Rockville small PA speakers the sealed box with the 8 inch speakers we then took out everything speakers ex..we put 2 paper drivers tweeters that BIC venture uses they now have reporductions of these at 8 ohms..and looked and looked for a pair of radio shack raw speakers the 8 inch poly cone 50 watts 100 watts max..we use a inter M R300 to push them.. perfect problem with new generation speakers there all stiff and high power and don't sound good at all..and I love the punchy bass these shack speakers do in a sealed box...so your mixing old with new technology we do use the Gemini PA 7000 preamp with a up grade and use the dbx 231s EQ.. I've yes had nice vintage stereo however rebuilding them can be costly..and just are not as clear as I would like them to be or muddy sounding..so I do watch your videos and others I do bring in old guitar tube amps to repair ex..tubes out of Russia sound the best in like a Marshall guitar head..ex...thanks for the videos on wards..
For the note we use the old transformers for the cross overs..the research speakers used them..for the woofer the big choke coil transformer works great for mid bass and very low bass tones..as for your mid bass the transformer filters a lot of noise out and makes your mid bass nice and clear without the hiss you get from vintage speakers
I found a pair of Infinity Quantum 3s a few years ago and bought them for 150 bucks. Refoamed the Watkins' dual voice coil woofers, refinished the cabinets, and made new grills for them. My son was able to make very authentic looking logos for the grills and I must say that these bad boys crank and sound amazing! Needless to say, I love vintage audio stuff! 🙂
I build and repair pro audio and audio equipment in general tube amps and vintage recording consoles and compressors and equalizer specifically I just found your channel and subscribed look forward to more content I know this video is over a year old
I have an AA100 in my collection. It uses four 7591 tubes for 25 wpc.
I think there is a lot to be said for a modern Pro-Ject or Rega. I have a Debut Pro and a Debut Revolve and they just work, no motor noise and great tacking ability with stable pitch. Replacement parts and upgrades are easily obtainable and everything is made in Europe.
Those DIY day have returned!!!!
What speakers are those?
ADS L520
Sounds good even on my Logictech computer speakers. Lol
I have over 25pairs of vintage speakers, including: 2 pairs of Klipsch Heresy's, Klipsch Belle's, Electrovoice Marquis (1960), JBL L53 Libras(1972); 4 pairs of Celestion's, 3 pairs of Focal's; 2 pairs of Advents; B&W dm302; 2 pairs of KEFs; and multiple Compression Drivers, Woofers,Tweeters,Crossovers, etc... from the 60's,70's. I've been Building Speakers for 30 years. Speakers have not gotten any better over the years! They have been cheapened up.
I found a pretty decent place for belts because I was having the same problem as yourself and a place dynamic lamps on the internet cheap prices but quality products
Currently using a vintage Rotel RP-2500 and an Akai AP-207 both with NOS Shure cartridges. Couldn't be happier.
also looking to reduce heater voltage -use a .33 at ? Watts is 3 OK
Depends on how much current the heaters draw. For example, if the tubes' heaters collectively draw 3 A, P = I^2 × R = 9 × 0.33 = 3 W. Find the data sheets for each tube online. If you're amp has a tube rectifier with a name beginning with 5 (5U4GB, 5AR4), then that one has its own supply, so don't count it in the total.
@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi I also have A PACO - I see at the AK forum that some have used a - SINGLE - resistor ( w Heat issues perhaps?) I was redirected to a bucking transformer fix ,to run the amp- thoughts ? its running on a variac at the moment
I only doubled the resistors to get the right resistance value. Power handling wasn't really a consideration, except that I figured the two could handle plenty. Console amps often have power transformers with "extra" 6V windings (originally for the tubes in the tuner/preamp, and those can be used to buck the primary voltage). With that mod, you're adding turns to the primary to get a bigger voltage drop between primary and secondary. But it sounds like you're talking about adding a transformer between mains and primary. Seems like a lot for a fraction of a volt! Some might also worry about high plate voltages, but that's not typically a problem.
Enjoyed watching you work on this unit. I am the original owner of the same model that still works great. It is scheduled for Cap replacements and some other recommended work to prep it for many more years of enjoyment. Love how you explain your steps and thoughts.
Thanks!
How about operating the tube in its linear region or put a constant current source on it?
I plan to use a CCS on an SET build.
Vraiment très intéressant ; vous savez de quoi vous parlez.
I refuse FM for a couple reasons. One is the ads. Another is the constant loop of the same top 100 songs. This caused me to get burned out on a lot of great tunes. To hear the same songs now? Not going to do it. I use streaming for it's discovery function. This has allowed me to listen well outside my typical genre preferences. Vintage gear does not really offer any advantage for me even though I have some. I hate using up something I know that is even on more borrowed time, even after restoration. Not a fan of analog pots and they don't last as long the second go around. I listen every day and often marathons on weekends. I just don't want to flog a vintage amp/receiver like that. My speakers don't need tubes or vintage gear. They hold their own sound signature regardless of what amps I use. Ultra-silent class D is worth doing. Mostly I prefer older, pre-HDMI AV receivers. Sub/pre outs and bass management for what amounts to a quite potent 2.1 system for pennies on the $. The one I am using now is vintage in it's own right, going on 23 years and still looks and functions like new. Add a PC for a music source and there really is no want for anything else. My speakers offer enough of the aesthetic value. Those with rubber surrounds may outlast a couple receivers/amps. Vinyl I only revisit a few times a year. There's almost too much of my past tied up in those records. I have to be in a certain good mood to take that trip. I don't buy new vinyl. These are the same 70 or so I always had.
I've had many speakers over the years and finally ended up with altec Lansing model 19 they sound amazing and i will never part with them.
Currently restoring a pair og Goodmans 201s from the 60's.
I just looked those up. Pretty cool! Are yours already in cabinets? My dad's speakers had coaxial drivers from the UK, and he put them in big Electro-Voice cabinets.
are tube amps better than solid state?
That's a matter of differing opinions. I like tube amps, and I think they offer something that solid state doesn't. Is it all in my mind? Not all!
don`t take so much apple soda !!!!
you been born in digital probably
Well, Cooley and Tukey published their FFT algorithm before I was born, but the first CD players were still over a decade away. No, I grew up in a house full of records and a smaller but still large collection of r2r tapes. Most car stereos had 8-tracks if they even had tape players when I was growing up.
Every adventure with the vintage equipment is interesting, and you answered a question I had which is if you still have the LAB-400, I see it made an appearance in this video!
That is an impressive repair! I definitely liked the strengthening of the plinth, I have a LAB-420 that I am going to be servicing and I think i am going to adopt your technique to it. Is this your personal turntable or did you find it a good home?
I found it a good home. I shot the footage for the other video that you saw it in back in May and June 2023, and I sold the 400 in March 2024. A guy made me an offer I couldn't refuse! 🤣
In 2007 I bought a pair of Altec Lansing Model 17’s with 604-8g drivers at a church yard sale for $150. They are still in my system and paired with a pair of McIntosh MC40 tube amps from 1963.
I used to have AKG K-92's headphones and if I would like to have Headphones again, I would choose them again. This Model must be around over 40 years, so... Not sure this was the review the company was looking for.🤣
That'll teach em to send me their bottom of the line! 🤣
@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi No offence, but I wonder why they asked you for a review in the first place. On the other hand, a critical and honest review could lead to being asked to review really good products, because your community sees you as authentic - at least I do. I have seen this happening in other authentic YT-channels. Maybe you should give this headphones to somebody, so you're not getting emotionally challenged when you look at them.
It was kind of a random ask. I figure they just want to get them seen, and the bigger channels won't commit to actually reviewing them. We know that some channels don't post negative reviews at all! It's not because they like everything. Like other things in my collection, I'll probably pass these along once I get something better.
@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi I basically trust vintage gear reviews, cause there are no commercial interests involved. "Franks Werkstadt der Lautsprechertechnik" makes sometimes new gear reviews, and he does it in a good German way.- incorruptible. I guess you can watch his stuff with english subtitles. He's the Nr.1 DIY speaker channel in the German countries.
I hear ya, all this boy has is cheap headphones. It's that relaxed, honest style, nice.
I like "mixing" and bought a used Nakamichi BX300
A very balanced, informative review - and I am actually still considering buying the cans with the noted concerns! My only disappointment was hearing you employ a leafblower 😂
And many thanks to your sons’ contributions to the review.
In moderation, but yes. I know. 😒🤣
interesting results. i do think it’s worth spending $30 - 50 on quality cables, mostly to ensure quality materials are used with good construction) but i highly doubt we would be able to measure any significant difference beyond that. i totally agree that money is much better spent on other things. i think if most of the cable believers actually opened up their equipment and laid eyes on all the basic copper wire used inside their amps and speakers it might open their eyes a bit
The music man lol how about some Alan Parsons or Steely Dan or Gerry Rafferty?
