It tastes better without carrot, with carrot it calls Stolichniy as I know. And it's more delicious to put boiled chicken fillet cutted into cubes instead of kolbasa (sausage). Also flavor highly depends from marinated cucambers flavor. This salad can literally put you back in the childhood, for me it reminds New year and Christmas.

TOP KGB Secret!! Rrreal Rrrussian Salad😮
Take 3 boiled eggs; boil to well done: 2 mid size jacket potatoes and carrots.
Around 300 grams of ham or mortadella (or chicken meat if you looking for a healthier option).
1 small or half mid size onion.
Chop all of it. All ingredients must be the same size. Approx. 1 cubic centimeter.
Add canned green peas. Mix it with mayonnaise+salt+pepper as you like.
If you want a lighter version, you can mix 50:50 mayo and sour cream.
      Enjoy the classic Russian Salad.
Remember! No beetroot or apples inside the salad. Boil potatoes and carrots to well done. No aldente crunch accepted 😊

Soviet nutritional doctrine was driven by the fact that Imperial Russia had chronic food and fuel shortages, and in the twilight days suffered catastrophic defeats in WWI, which led to civil war and further shortages. Without muddying the waters with details of warfare and famine, the USSR began a colosal effort to modernise food production and nutritional delivery from the late 1920's. Soviet food tends to be simple, but nutritionally ballanced and calorie-heavy. As such, most "winter salads" feature potatoes, some sort of meat-protein, and a mayo-based derssing. This includes at least one "salad" where several meat products are the accent ingredients (with potatoes and mayo), and another "fruit salad" featuring fairly accessable fruit like apples and oranges dressed with a quarter cup of mayo.
Did people really eat these things, yes ( mostly, probably not fruit with mayo). It's actually surprisingly good, and quite filling.
A "winter salad" (mostly cold boiled root vegetables, and meat) can be a meal in itself, and often serves that way when leftover from a celebration...
