- A rare TV appearance with a band I was with for a good few months. The Nightcatchers was not my usual style, but we got along well and had a lot of fun. We had a lot of prospects though never broke through. Crazy that only 6 months later I was playing with Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers and Chris Slade in the early days of The Firm.
Nightcatchers: Roger Cornish guitar / voc (RIP)
Nikki Leeger voc
Pete Briggs-Fish drums
Andy Murtagh keys
Tony Franklin bass
Great, innovative players like Mr Franklin deserve to be in the Rock Hall Of Fame
Thank you! 😊
Tony “The Terminator” Franklin..Man of a million styles!!!
Haha. Indeed.
What a beast, Tony, throwing down slap with the best, Mark King, Marcus Miller - "Sure I can slap for this number" - Tony Probably.
Haha. Thanks. Whatever the music needs 🤷♂️🤩👍🏻
I can’t stop humming The Nightcatchers’s song in my head.👍🏼🎶❤️☺️
Wow. Nice. It is quite catchy 🤩👏🏻
Wow. This was a little mind blowing. That bass though! ❤🎸🤘♾️
A little different right? 😂🤷♂️🔥
@FretlessMonster Totally! Got that new wave funk goin on. 🔥🤘✌️
I love it, that sounds good, what a great era that was, those were some of the best times of my life. That was great Tony..
Those were fun times for sure
Nice tidy short back and sides there Tony, very wholesome, excellent stuff.
Haha thanks! Yes the short back & sides didn’t last long, though I’ve had it a few times over the years
Looking & sounding fabulous 👌 ( God that's so 1984 ) -- Bass completely makes that track -- nice n high in da mix 😀 x
Thanks! And yes, 100% 1984!
Tony Franklin super. благодарю за видео отличного выступления.
👍🏻🤩 Thank you
Amazing new wave sounds. Cheers, Tony! ✌️
Cheers! Thanks so much 🤩👍🏻
For the genre, this is really pleasant. But the bass is fantastic!
Thanks Tony
I truly appreciate that!!
I find the song really cool. I loved it. I have a playlist with classic pop songs of the seventies-eighties and I have included it.
Thank you, Tony.
Nice!! Thanks so much
That's a tight performance and a great song ! Historic footage to be sure Thanks for posting !
Truly appreciate that. Thanks for watching!
Never thought I'd see this clip again. Thanks for posting it. Such nostalgia!
Great. Thanks. I hadn’t seen it in years either. The keyboard player Andy Murtagh found it on an old VHS. Great memories
Excellent Tony , that had to be a fun jam .. ✌️
It was fun. A great group of people.
Mr. Franklin GETTING HIS FUNK ON!!
👍🏻🤪 That’s right 🤩
Oh wow, this is different. Tony getting funky! That's some super tight playing. Thanks for sharing this.
Haha, I want to see The Alarm's performance. I was a huge fan of theirs!
Thanks so much. Definitely a different side of me.
The Alarm performance might be around. Look them up on ORS 1984.
Man those bass chops!!!
Thanks!! 🤩👍🏻
Tony Franklin is absolutely awesome!!!
You’re too kind. Thank you
🥰🧡
that was just the beginning... 🙂
Not quite. 🤪😂 But certainly before the “big” stuff. I’d already toured and recorded with Roy Harper before this. What a journey!
oh yesss! 👍👍👍👍👍
Spank the plank!!!!! Funky bananas Tony great stuff
Haha. Yes indeed.
@@FretlessMonster The bass playing in the 60s was mind bending... There were so many great players
Great to see you again. How was the tour going with Lou ? Thank you very much for your this precious post of unknown band to me(maybe for many of japanese too)
Thank you. The gigs with Lou are great.
The Nightcatchers never really broke through.
Well there's something I didn't know Tony!
Haha I’m sure. That’s why I share. 🤪👍🏻
Back in my 80's MeTaL band days, we weren't fans of the electronica ERA.. Fast forward to today, I'll take it over the Crap being produced Today..
And FRANKLIN on that Slapping BASS is a KILLER !!😜👍🏻👍🏻
Hope to see you in Montreal MATE 😁🤘
Thanks so much. Yes this was not my usual style, but it was a lot of fun. 🤩
Hope to see you there! 👍🏻
Yeah!!!!
👍🏻👍🏻🤩🤩
Getting lots of Level 42 vibes from this.
Very much. Mark King definitely influenced that side of my playing.
My ears pricked up when I heard you with Roy, I don't recall ever catching the Nightcatchers. I made sure to be there with all my chums when The Firm played in Copenhagen. 😁
Great times. Things were moving quickly back then. The Nightcatchers was a short-lived band that sadly never took off. If they did though, I may not have joined the Firm. Who knows. Cool that you caught that early Firm show.
She's nicked your hair, Tony!!!!
😂😂😂
This sounds amazing and interesting. That's shame that you didn't "broke through" :/
Thanks so much. Imagine though. If this had hit big, I may not have joined The Firm! 🤷♂️🤪
I can’t believe how much your hair grew in 6 months.
Right? Though the Radioactive video was shot 9 months later. Plenty of time to grow. 😊🤩
Thats good stuff! I love the funky bottom end! Long time no see. Have you been working on any new projects coming up?
Thanks! It’s been a while. Always working on new stuff. Something to be released here before too long. 🤩
@@FretlessMonster Looking forward to it!
Hey tony you all good? Havent seen you post in a bit. Hope everything is good braddah
Hey. Thanks for checking in. I’m good thanks. Just busy. I definitely need to post some new content!
Great origin video, Tony. How did you get the call for The Firm? Someone from their camp saw you on TV with this group? I'm giving you great ideas for video content for your channel. LOL
Long story. One for the book. In short, through Roy Harper.
I wonder what happened to the guitarist? Hard to find any info looking online.
Sadly Roger Cornish passed away in 2023. He was very low key after this band.
@@FretlessMonster He was only in his late 50s I expect. Follows on from news of Vitalij Kuprij who died age 49 the other day. Keyboard player who was Classically trained etc and involved with top tier musicians in Rock/Metal/Jazz stuff. Not sure why guys are dying young at the moment, and often while still working / on tour etc.
TONY!!!!! SO HOT!!!!! ❤🔥
🤪🤷♂️😂
I'm fascinated about the slap bass phenomenon from this time period. The retrospective misperception seems to be that Flea was the only white guy with funk.
Ever hear of Mark King?
Duran Duran was getting pretty slappy and funky -- and they were just building on Larry Graham, Boosty, Brothers Johnson, etc.
Mark King was definitely an influence on me at this time. He might be the first of that ilk.
A big influence on me at this time.
@@3rdmm I wonder if the Mark King involved in this very project is the same legendary bass player? ua-cam.com/video/sEodBnJ3HN4/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/1iynor76eMI/v-deo.html
Wow ! You Style is like Flea (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) I think Flea copy you ! Do you have contact with the band ? The blonde so pretty 😍
Haha. I think Flea developed his own style. The Nightcatchers were not heard in the US.
I’m in contact with them still. Except Roger the guitarist who sadly passed away in 2023. Nikki was very pretty.
Has a Duran Duran vibe to it.....
Definitely. And we were from the same region in the UK. 🇬🇧
I miss built hair.
It was fun 🤩
Sim drums slap bass a mountain of synths and big hair must be the 1980s 😅😅
Haha. 100% 👏🏻😂
TONY!!!! I NEED you to “do me a favor”…. And in turn, bassists globally….
Squire does not make a fretless P-Bass… in fact, I think the only fretless P-bass Fender makes is your signature model. I don’t want to get another Sire, the pickups are meant to be active, and I don’t want another active P-Bass after I put a Les Claypool Pachyderm Gold pickup in a 40th anniversary Squire….
As you can tell, I’m priced out of the Fender Signature Model level….
Can you PLEASE “pull some strings” (see what I did there😂) and see if Squire would be open to a fretless P-bass? I remember that Fender and Squire both produced a Troy Sanders signature bass… the Squire was passive and Fender was active…. Plus, Squire produced the best fretless I’ve ever played; the Vintage Modified Jazz bass…
Okay, fine, I’ll just say the obvious out loud…. I can’t afford your signature a bass and I want one. 😂😂😂
The only other “dream” Fretless P-Bass I know of is a Fender Japan model made in the 1990’s called the PBAC-100… it was semi-acoustic, wood bridge with a piezo, hollow body with F-holes, and a Lace Sensor P-pickup. I highly recommend adding one to your arsenal… to be able to get the P-bass sound AND the upright sound from the same bass is awesome…
I’ve presented this idea before. One of the challenges is maintaining the quality needed for such a fine tuned instrument.
I would totally agree… 4 years ago. Next time you get a chance, grab ahold of a 40th Anniversary Vintage Edition or a Paranormal Series bass and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in my humble opinion 😇
I know they have the templates… I truly believe Squier can pull off the Semi-Acoustic fretless P-Bass with the F hole from that PBAC-100 FL…. Yes, it would probably demand a $700+ price tag, but that is what the Japanese PBAC-100 commanded in 1995 when I first laid eyes on it.
So, yeah, I’m begging for a fretless P-Bass… without going back to Sire. Not that Sire is a bad instrument, they are the bees knees FFS.. 🤣🤣🤣
Either way, ALL THE LOVE BROTHER IN BASS!!! You are a legend…
God....I'm so glad electronic drums died out!
Haha. Agreed
A young fretless monster playing a fretted Jaydee… Thumb down player I see. Depends on how you wear the bass, I guess…👍
I had no idea. I just played what felt right. Didn’t know any different. 🤷♂️😂
You do what you gotta do to get the job done. The days before UA-cam... I had the Louis Johnson Hot Licks VHS tape.😁
