- Nail Assessment for Nursing (Normal and Abnormal Findings)
Nursing student's registered nurses, and clinical practitioners will often look at a patient's nail bed to examine the overall health of the patient.
Completing a nursing assessment will include skin, hair, and nails. In this video, I talk about the importance of a thorough nail assessment as it will give us information about the patient's mental health, self-care capacity, respiratory health, cardiovascular health, nutritional health and so much more.
Master this nursing skill and nursing assessment is a top priority as we spend so few seconds looking at the nails, but gather very detailed information.
In this video, I will talk about several key areas for nailbed assessment such as
1. shape and contour
2. side profile
3. consistently
4. color and capillary refill test
5. abnormalities to consider such as clubbing, Terry's Nails, vitamin deficiencies, endocrine disorders, and more.

I had a ECG, x-ray , ECG 4 months ago for a surgery. All were clear. But my nails are slightly clubbed.
Any changes now ? Have they got better or worse or same ??
Hey ever find out what was going on?
I cant bite my nails, seriously I have no teeth hehe but anxiety depression makes me pull my nails off the upper I have a deformed nail bed and a dent in middle but due to few hard hits and 20 yrs ago i pulled a press on nail off it was too big
Yikes! Lol. Sounds like that was quite an experience
I have those vertical lines too. 🤔
What did you discover? Did you talk with a healthcare professional?
@@NurseMinder No, I haven’t consulted with a healthcare professional yet. However, I had complete blood count about 2 months ago and everything was normal. I was not anemic ( I have learned that anemia could cause vertical ridges on nails). I had these vertical lines on my nails since I was in high school (perhaps since 16-17 y/o) and I’m now 22. I will also point out that the ridges on my nails kind of look like the ridges on your nails 🙂😊😊
Evertime i get my nails done afterwards they look awful. The white tips streak
I had gel nails once / never again. They ruin the nail bed
@NurseMinder do you know why that happens. The streaking throughout my nailbed? I can literally only paint my nails otherwise it's to hard on my nails.
