I agree. It's not due to a lack of studying that we can enjoy God speaking to us like this. I remember that multiple times at church, I opened my Bible and it opened directly on the page where the pastor was about to read.
Several years ago, I had been reading the Bible on a tablet while attending church services out of state during my vacation and hadn't used that tablet for months when I turned it back on and it was at the end of Hebrews on the verse stating that Timothy had been set at liberty. When I read that, my cousin Timothy had just passed away. Reading the Bible is great - whether you're doing a deep study or just reading a verse or two. It's good to get the scripture inside your mind and heart. God can speak to us. Yes, we need a good foundation in the Word of God, but you don't have to be doing a deep study every time you read. Just read, pray and yield to God.

As a young boy, I suffered from ADHD and insomnia. At night, to help me fall asleep, I would read the Bible, and listen to AM radio Bible preaching. At the time, I hated the insomnia. Now, as a man of 59 years, although my memory and capacity are diminishing, I am able to recall the verses(in context) and their meaning. I am very grateful for what I thought was a curse - the insomnia. God is good. Always.

So I usually take that time instead of grumbling that I can't sleep but to read His word, but I read what I am studying already, I don't do the random open up and point, that is dangerous because it can be taken out of context and/or Satan just loves using God's word against those who love the Lord!

Not long after I was saved, I was watching a tv preacher late night. I had barely any knowledge of scripture yet. He claimed he had not committed a single sin all year, or the year before.
He said all it took for Adam and Eve to fall was one sin.
I got scared to death, as I sinned every day, even as a believer. My desires had changed, I loved church, and learning the Bible, but I still failed daily.
Monday morning at break time, I prayed to the Lord for understanding.
I opened my Bible and began thumbing through the pages. I found JN 5:24, EPH. 2:8-9 and 4:30....and verses in Romans.
I believe the Lord led me to those passages in answer to my fears.
I understand that is not exactly the same thing "Wretched" is discussing, but this video reminded me of that event in my life.
    God bless....

Grace gives you no pass to trotting down the commandments of God, we establish the commandments of God kingdom which is earth. Any man who does not do God commandments have nothing in Christ, Christ is the word of the father, and the father word is the commandments spoken by him. Now do you understand Isaiah 55:11? Did Christ, the word in the flesh return to God? You have a testimony of the word of God in Christ in a book. The commandments must be in you, for you to be in Christ. The times of the gentiles or nations the commandment of God is not in the body of man, therefor there are wars and rumors of wars, because these times is a time of darkness, and his word is a lamp to the feet of those who do as Christ commanded. See the commandments >1Corinthians 6:8-9-10, see the commandments >Acts 21:25? WORKS OF THE LAW ARE CIRCUMCISION, SACRIFICE. Doing or living as Christ did in the spirit of the father which is the very words that the father commanded is the way truth and the life. Man was made in God image but fell from the image by disobedience and death entered into the kingdom of God which is earth. 'He gives strength to the weary, and increases the power of the weak.' Now I know that this is one verse out of a chapter and I can't explain this, but as I read this, I had such a strong assurance in my soul that God was going to bring my son through. Instantly my fear and worry disappeared and I had such a peace surrounding me. During this time, the doctors were very concerned that he wasn't going to make it but I held onto what I believed was the promise God had given me. I really, really, really want to do something but I want to know if I'm in God's will for my life so I take my request to our Father in Heaven. I have to quiet myself and clear my mind from the noise of coveting, wanting, to have better than my neighbor, and ask myself if this path will draw me closer or push me farther away from a relationship with God the Father. The answer comes relatively quickly and I've learned from hard knocks not to override God's decision

I know of no place in the Bible that commands us to seek God’s will. We’re commanded several times, with promises, to seek God, and we’re told that we will know His will when we are wholly surrendered. Seek God. Seek His face continually. He is the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. He is good to those who seek Him. You want His will, be surrendered and seek Him. In the words of someone far wiser than us: Seek Him! Seek Him! Seek Him!

Well, that can't be right the man thought nervously. He tried again. "Go thou and do likewise." Oh, no! I must be doing something wrong. I'll try one last time. "What you must do, do quickly." End of tale.

In general I agree with what is said here. It’s particularly bad in the charismatic world that I’m a part of. However, divination almost always is about seeking answers, and then receiving them from an unknown unreliable source. This isn’t necessarily that. For one, the girl in the clip wasn’t asking a specific question and expecting to get a specific answer. It was more of a feeling of directlessness and wanting God to move her focus in the right direction. That’s not a bad prayer request or expectation and even more so if you believe the answer is found in the Word. Second, when she read the Word she kept the verse in its original context. That’s key. As long as it continues to say what God intended it to say it’s ok. If we don’t hyper-spiritualize this practice and make it commonplace then it really is no different than asking that same prayer and then trusting God’s leading by giving you a dream, vision, a thought that pops in your head, a topic that someone brings up in conversation, a video that pops up in your feed, etc. These are all very subtle ways that God MAY give us direction. There is no way to know for sure other than the inner witness of the Holy Spirit that confirms its relevance to your life and timing.

If God chooses to speak to an individual in this manner and it is inline with who He is, His character and within the context of the entire counsel of God's Word, then who are we to say he won't do this.. I have been in distress and happen to be reading in the Bible and a particular verse leaped off the pages at me and was totally relatable to what I was going through.
We always try to define God into terms WE can understand.. In essence, we end up putting God in a box defined by our own human theology. Last I checked, God didn't need us to tell Him what to do and not do.. He is GOD, let Him BE God.

The person pointed to a text, it read,
"he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself", Matthew 27:5.
He responded, "that can't be right. Let me try again".

Bibliomancy has been around forever, and I didn't know until now that it actually had a name! I"ve observed most believers going through a phase of it at one time or another during their lives, and it does appear to be the refuge of the unstudied, that is, the one who has not familiarized themselves with Scripture. Once a person becomes grounded in the Word, they no longer see any need for such a "shortcut".

Sometimes God does communicate like that Todd because it's the living Bible. If you don't have the Holy Spirit that's another story but if you have the Holy Spirit he will speak in many ways and that is one of them. You certainly shouldn't just grab your Bible and open it up You should pray first seek his face draw close to God and he will draw close to you. Then ask him to show you what you asked and have discernment over what you read. I have been amazed over the years how precise God has answered very specific prayers. Example: In prayer one day God spoke to my heart and told me to fast, I have never fasted before so I was kind of curious how long I was supposed to do this so I asked him to tell me through his word how long I should fast. Then I opened my bible and my eyes immediately went to a place where it says they fasted for one week. So I fasted for one week. God Bless you and your ministry,

So God can't speak to His children by allowing them to turn to the right page? Ridiculous. Of course He can... and does. Here is a similar way he spoke to me and how my love for the Lord was greatly increased when I was 15: Hunting in the woods one day when it was windy and raining. I was under evergreen trees to avoid the rain. I was opening my Bible to read (was homeschooled, had my books with me) when I paused and prayed, "God will you make the wind and rain go away so I can hunt squirrel?" Immediately He spoke to me (not heard with my ears) and said, "Go to II Kings 3:17." I listened to Him and read His word: "For thus says the Lord, ‘You shall not see wind nor shall you see rain..." I was shocked. I grabbed my stuff and, in faith, walked out of the trees and the rain STOPPED and the wind DIED. It turned to a California day, one I will never forget. After this I sought Him more and more... I had a better understanding of how much He loved me - to change the weather for me (let alone the laying down of His life to save me).
