Terrific video on how any of us feel. I'm 50 and have been collecting since I was teen. Mostly comics and the few TFs I got. Then I was over age 20 and bought more and more, here and there. I couldn't really enjoy them till after I moved out of my parents' house and I could do what I want in my home. I've really been enjoying modern G1 TFs due to all the reasons you stated.

I am quite a young person in terms of TF toys, my first experience was watching Armada and seeing how cool Starscream was. At the time however it was seen as a childish hobby to collect them despite how well articulated they were for the cost at the time but teens and young adults who their parents who saw G1 pestered how cool it was didn't wanna be like them so the generation in the 90s and early 2000s felt that it was pointless to enjoy such a silly things since they saw anything old as "outdated" and "boring" and that really hit me since my dad loved watching G1 and got me into it but my friends and bullies found it stupid. Many years later to today, with my finances doing me a good favor I finally looked at them and was impressed that they were redoing the G1 with great accuracy and even some of the Armada toys so i got back into collecting them once more and even made friends online and offline in the real world with co-workers who share the same hobby. Some groups like Lego or TCG collectors were a hobby but it turned into a strange cut-throat market and that really bummed me out but i don't have to worry about a G1 Coronation Starscream release jumping high in value or people beating down and robbing collectors of their Bumble Bee movie Shockwave or even the Target exclusive Optimus Prime. Thanks guys, I am glad to rejoin the TF space and not only love the collecting but you guys are so chill and it makes me happy.
I lived for a little more than half as long as the Transformers franchise has been around and got introduced to Transformers thanks to Michael Bay's movies. I love the modern G1 stuff. I love how they take the original designs, improve them by giving them more detail and more realistic proportions, and then make great figures that: 1. Scale well with each other 2. Have great articulation 3. Come in a great variety of molds and colors 4. Have hilarious character bios 5. Have great alt modes 6. Are so unique from each other than no two characters are alike 7. We have yet to get new figures of characters we haven't gotten yet 8. The new updates of older figures are better than the originals 9. The classes and price points make collecting and financial planning interesting 10. And are MOSTLY painted well.

I love this video! Great reasons I agree with. I always wanted to get back in to as an adult but I had my son at 18 and won custody when I was 20. One of the coolest things I was able to pass on to him is the love for Transformers. I would buy him many as a kid and now he’s an adult he collects studio series and I loved seeing every new figure he added to his collection. I finally made the plunge in May of this year and started my own collection of Masterpiece style from official to 3rd party. I'm now 8 figures and just purchased Jetfire this weekend. I am excited as I can be. I truly enjoy seeing others who collect and just as much I enjoy hearing why. Transformers hold a special place in my heart, I'm glad you and all the other folks who collect are keeping this going. Thanks for the videos.

Good video. I turned 50 not too long ago and started just before the 86 release line, the display area behind my gaming rig is now dedicated to my boxed collection. Your #6 is the big one for me, nostalgia. As an adult offput by today's world, struggling to find meaning in anything, what else was I going to do, but retreat to the things that meant something to me in my childhood?
Great video this. Really enjoyed it and it resonated with me alot. I'm 45, from the UK myself and grew up a massive fan of the marvel comics we had here , the cartoon and the toys. My friend got me legacy Blaster a few years ago and i was blown away by how much he looked like the character from the cartoon/comics i grew up with. I Started looking into other old favourite characters of mine & picking them up and now im hooked collecting them! The Dinobots were always my favourite and the studio series 86 line of them is amazing and im really looking forward to getting Swoop next month, a transformer we never got in the UK in the 80s and completing the set of them! 😁.

I'm 51 and just started collecting again. Mostly through 3rd party, but I have quite a few Hasbro figs that I caught for a good price. My struggle is the price point versus the actual quality of the figure and 3rd party seems to be killing it on both ends atm. I am awaiting that Studio Series Optimus and hope we get a real SS86 Megatron.
A superb, honest and well articulated video. Loved it. I share many of the sentiments. Nice to see a similar collection to mine too. The resurgence of G1 through Siege/Earthrise drew me back in after only grabbing the odd MP figure I had an attachment to. Then of course, came Earthrise, Kingdom, Legacy, and the thing that really cemented my regular purchases, SS86! That first wave of Grimlock, HotRod, Scourge, Jazz, Blurr and Kup blew me away and I haven't looked back since. I still only get the characters I had as a kid, I like the design of or had an attachment to though. Figures like Starscream, Soundwave, Shockwave, Optimus, Megatron and Prowl just haven't quite nailed the characters, but as Optimus has shown, we can wait long enough, a SS series version will come along sooner or later. Thankfully they've been wise enough to reissue Jetfire as I missed him first time round, and now my spending has extended to the Haslab Omega Prime too. Now I have a storage/display problem! Those Ikea Detolfs aren't cheap, sadly.
That was a great video. It was just nice to hear someone talk about their love of a hobby that a lot of people share, but not in some overproduced video. It felt more like a conversation, which I appreciated. I collect Transformers and video games as well. A lot of your points hit home for me, and perfectly summed up where I am at and my own views on collecting. I recently got back into collecting Transformers. I was a fan of the G1 show growing up, and collected from 2007 until about 2014, where I just trailed off. The Studio Series 86 is what really has gotten me back into collecting. They really are beautiful figures/toys.
I like to customize my toys with paint to accentuate the scultpted details and bring out a more vibrant look. Pannel lines, exposed mechanical bits, windshield wipers, color matching, and so forth.
I got in o collecting towards the end of 2021. I was so unfocused and chaotic with it that I now have totes upon totes of figures. Ive toned back my buying to try and focus on specifics like Masterpiece but it is the most addicting thing ive ever done. My living room shelves are packed with figures ranging from G1 to the Bay movies. I keep meaning to start an Ebay store but a full time job limits that.
Ebay seems to be the way to go and people cycle characters in and out of their collections. I also joined the Kapow toys marketplace which is great. Thanks for watching!

I need to work on getting better at the photography. currently I just use my pixel phone and I'm a bit lazy with it - I need to spend more time setting things up nicely. That was beautiful. I see many similarities to my own collecting journey. In particular my partner allowing me to dork out. She even lets me display a few Commander Class figures in our shared living space😂 ... I dig how intentional and thoughtfully focused you are in your collecting habits. Really appreciate this video. I've collected Transformers my entire life, from way back in 1984. In 2020 I decided to get out of the hobby as it was getting too much for me. I had too much and it felt like too much to take care of. Now, however I'm beginning to feel some regret and miss it. Trying to figure out how to dip my toe back in after owning some of the most amazing figures the line ever produced and selling them. Your video really spoke to me and I'll be following from here on out.
i find myself in second hand stores looking for a new figure anymore. Today for example i found a fully completed 86 KUP; 20 dollar complete shattered glass Sideswipe. :D I am right there with you sir! thank you for your thoughts and your videos!
The current Hasbro team are going out of there way to do every transformers characters within their ability and the budget , they are given and they have done characters that never got a toy like Nightbird , Elita -One and Devcon to characters so obscure , I didn't even know they existed until now like Zetar , a powerdasher of all things , who were just promotional figures that you got in the mail during the early run of the original tv show not only that the transformer team has been branching out to the other continuities as well , I mean did anyone else think we would see G1 , IDW , Japanese G1 , Beast Wars , Unicron Trilogy , Prime and Animated within the same toy line and the last three years have been great for transformer fans and we have been eating well .
Thanks for talking about Nostalgia! It’s become such a bad word these days because of the over abundance of it in media, but for toys? Yeah, it’s great to get a figure of something you had as a kid or always wanted as a kid.
I absolutely love these new figures! I am also fortunate enough to have accumulated a fantastic collection. I have no desire to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars a piece for the retro figures. As you said, these are accurate and articulate, and that is so much more important to me.
Me too - accuracy is probably number one, with articulation a close second. I'd sacrifice an elbow join if it made the character a bit more cartoon accurate - but I do like the poseability so they can look really dramatic on display
To me, while the first Generations (early 2010's) that got me back interested in the toys, I only started buying them at the last wave of Kingdom (short version, was brokefor years, got a job eventually but had a mindset to saved as much cash as possible but broke that mindset realising how cheap they can become overtime) which was somewhat a perfect time to go back buying them?! Legacy was the "golden age" of toys, like it was the celebration of the lesser know characters finally getting morden AND accuracy too like Devcon and Jhiaxus for exampe! However I think Siege is where it really took off as that is when they had G1 characters but mordern articulation. Like seriously, "ankle tilt" is a major godsend! That is not to say the previous line (Prime War triliogy) was bad as I had one figure (Trigger Happy) and regret not any more of them but the lack of ankle killed it and they were more gimmicky back then (combiner and headmasters). Also I agreed that I had never bought a figure for over £100! I basically never buy a figure at full price as I learn my mistake with SSB Arcee (bought at full price but a month later discounted by £5 off) unless it's a fast seller like Tarn! I'm abit on the fence with that comic Straxus! I want him but don't want to buy him at full price. On the other hand, he can still be pre-order from Hasbro Pulse UK whereby Shockwave was soldout!
My biggest issue with the G1 figures being made are the various inconsistencies in painting and molding. Some figures have the sliver painted faces and others have the gray painted faces, some have clear plastic for windows or painted blue and some figures have sliver blue painted eyes or baby blue eyes.

Pretty much the same boat. Waiting on 86 Devastator, new Superion, Bruticus, Powerglide, Seaspray, Windcharger, Swerve, Tailgate, Outback and Venom… maybe another crack at Reflector too.
Love the happy memories of getting toys from Woolworths probably why im a big fan of power glide the the little autobot plane 😊 now thinking 🤔 of the uk comic i used get with my pocket money there was a story line that freaked me out called city of fear ran for about five issues dead zombie transformers 😮 about 1988 or 1989

I collect Masterpiece, KOs, and 3rd party, mainline is ok, the only thing about MPs is the price, it is so expensive. So i don't buy often, but when i do, they are so worth it.
They look totally worth it to me. The Seekers are a big draw for me towards the masterpiece - I can just get so many other figures for the price. But no doubt - some of the best Transformers ever made (hard to see how some of them could be topped really)
@@retroandreissue indeed, there are ways to get around paying so much for MPs as in KOs! Collecting Masterpiece is such a joy for me, but mainline is getting better in quality, with Studio Series 86 and such! Whatever line you collect, it is all about just having fun!
That is why i started collecting TFs as they only started looking good since Siege and SS86. I hated the toys besides MP that were too expensive as beer was more important. I collected everything but the figures until 2019, and now I have hundreds and hundreds. I watch all the different shows all the time, I read the comics all the time, and I'm just more addicted than ever. But it's really thanks to toon accuarcy that are also easy to transform, that I came into figures. All the years that if they were vaguley the same colour as in the show, that would do, seem to be gone forever. SS86 is the best toyline ever produced and rightly so as it supports the best film ever made. I do also collect MP and 3p MP now as well, but they just look nice are arent really efer handled. They Yolopark figures are incredible and I am collecting those now as well. They are pretty much perfection and I dont care if they don't transform so I have another way to get perfect robot modes, and for a lot cheaper than MP (that I never transform again after the first go anyway).
I don't do a lot of Transforming myself and generally prefer to keep them in bot mode (it's one of the reasons I make mistakes all the time and forget and miss something in the transformation!) 3:10 That's interesting and I hear it from most people, but I was mostly the opposite. I always assumed the toys were the authentic looks - I did want more articulation - but I wished the cartoon artists could've drawn the characters with as much detail as the toys had (but with articulation).
I quit masterpiece! To expensive and to limited . I started studio series 86 and that's all i buy now figures shouldn't cost more then 20 bucks ! Some of these are getting over priced though i may be quitting this line also if it keeps up but as is i love the line and yes i do get some legacy that fit in with the old school transformers i look for .
I think the most important when it comes to collecting anything including toys is to be selective. Not everyone has the budget to buy everything produced by toy manufacturers. Lets face the facts, we can never buy every single figure that's being released. Commercialism is a vicious cycle. Toy manufacturers will do anything and everything to make the average comsumer keep buying. So my best advice i always give myself is choose and buy selective. Even for characters you really love, apply the same logic. This will help to keep control on your own budget and space. Currently now I am happy that I have finally completed my studio series Dinobots and got my Haslab Victory Saber. Have just placed my pre-order for the Commander Class Optimus Prime and am looking forward to received it, along with the MPG Godmaster Super Ginrai. I am really hoping that Takara Tomy will release the MPG God Bomber soon for combining Super Ginrai into God Ginrai Oh yes! i dislike Man United and Spuds.

You chose the other path that I didn't and not the third path many chose- the legend scale mp. I chose to try to get the best of the best because I played with mainline and they weren't that fun to me, nor did they scratch the itch. I always knew something was better and that mainline could end up being more expensive in the long run, given that they are new versions made almost yearly. I chose MP line and I don't regret the line I chose, I only regret maybe I shouldn't have started collecting in the first place. But, I must admit, they do give me a joy that I can't imagine not having in my life. Especially in these times when people choose to be hell-raising stupid-heads.
I have an art channel in my discord server and I will post social media posts about transformers toys. Because just like you said. They are pieces of art.
0:11 I have to say that some bothers me about your transformation of Studio Series 86 Hot Rod, and maybe you like or prefer it that way or the parts are missing but, the way you have him in vehicle mode it isn’t full transformed. There are the little wing pieces that come from underneath the hood and cover the silver parts of Hot Rod's shoulder and completes the headlights aren’t out where they should be. Now if you prefer it that way, I apologize for bringing it and didn’t know and I do not want to cause any problems. It just bugs me as I have seen it before on your channel. We have to be honest, modern G1 are better than MP figures nowadays. Cheaper, they represent G1 characters in a toy, at adecuated scales, comparing them with other figures Of TF in general. But I think The price is Why they are better than MP right now. Well from my point of view, obviouslly
first 9 reasons to collect modern transformers g1 toys.....waste money. and the 10th reason, they come to life when you do some kind of voodoo stuff to them. kind of like the puppet master or Chucky. imagine, you, with a room full of killer modern g1 transformers toys, ready to...i don't know, take over the world? why not? with great toys comes great fun!
As someone who grew up with Animated and Prime. I’m sick and tired of 95% of figures being G1ified. Everything is G1 like none of the subsequent series even exist. I really want some of the Animated characters remade cause they are so difficult and expensive to find and buy. Hasbro has truly milked G1 for 40 years now and I think the other subgroups of the fandom, the ones who don’t care about G1, like myself, deserve some recognition…

I like to customize my toys with paint to accentuate the scultpted details and bring out a more vibrant look. Pannel lines, exposed mechanical bits, windshield wipers, color matching, and so forth.
i do that with sticker sets already. And filler/upgrade kits from ebay/nonnef.
I got in o collecting towards the end of 2021. I was so unfocused and chaotic with it that I now have totes upon totes of figures. Ive toned back my buying to try and focus on specifics like Masterpiece but it is the most addicting thing ive ever done. My living room shelves are packed with figures ranging from G1 to the Bay movies. I keep meaning to start an Ebay store but a full time job limits that.
Ebay seems to be the way to go and people cycle characters in and out of their collections. I also joined the Kapow toys marketplace which is great. Thanks for watching!
Your first reason resonates with me as a new collector. I really want to slowly collect a lot of characters even obscure ones and take pictures of them in action.
I need to work on getting better at the photography. currently I just use my pixel phone and I'm a bit lazy with it - I need to spend more time setting things up nicely. That was beautiful. I see many similarities to my own collecting journey. In particular my partner allowing me to dork out. I've collected Transformers my entire life, from way back in 1984. In 2020 I decided to get out of the hobby as it was getting too much for me. I had too much and it felt like too much to take care of.
Now, however I'm beginning to feel some regret and miss it. Trying to figure out how to dip my toe back in after owning some of the most amazing figures the line ever produced and selling them. Your video really spoke to me and I'll be following from here on out.
These are just really awesome compared to what we were playing with back in the 1980's.

i find myself in second hand stores looking for a new figure anymore. Today for example i found a fully completed 86 KUP; 20 dollar complete shattered glass Sideswipe. :D I am right there with you sir! thank you for your thoughts and your videos!
The current Hasbro team are going out of there way to do every transformers characters within their ability and the budget , they are given and they have done characters that never got a toy like Nightbird , Elita -One and Devcon to characters so obscure , I didn't even know they existed until now like Zetar , a powerdasher of all things , who were just promotional figures that you got in the mail during the early run of the original tv show not only that the transformer team has been branching out to the other continuities as well , I mean did anyone else think we would see G1 , IDW , Japanese G1 , Beast Wars , Unicron Trilogy , Prime and Animated within the same toy line and the last three years have been great for transformer fans and we have been eating well .

I absolutely love these new figures! I am also fortunate enough to have accumulated a fantastic collection. I have no desire to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars a piece for the retro figures. As you said, these are accurate and articulate, and that is so much more important to me.

Me too - accuracy is probably number one, with articulation a close second. I'd sacrifice an elbow join if it made the character a bit more cartoon accurate - but I do like the poseability so they can look really dramatic on display

To me, while the first Generations (early 2010's) that got me back interested in the toys, I only started buying them at the last wave of Kingdom (short version, was brokefor years, got a job eventually but had a mindset to saved as much cash as possible but broke that mindset realising how cheap they can become overtime) which was somewhat a perfect time to go back buying them?!
Legacy was the "golden age" of toys, like it was the celebration of the lesser know characters finally getting morden AND accuracy too like Devcon and Jhiaxus for exampe! However I think Siege is where it really took off as that is when they had G1 characters but mordern articulation. Like seriously, "ankle tilt" is a major godsend! That is not to say the previous line (Prime War triliogy) was bad as I had one figure (Trigger Happy) and regret not any more of them but the lack of ankle killed it and they were more gimmicky back then (combiner and headmasters).
Also I agreed that I had never bought a figure for over £100! I basically never buy a figure at full price as I learn my mistake with SSB Arcee (bought at full price but a month later discounted by £5 off) unless it's a fast seller like Tarn! I'm abit on the fence with that comic Straxus! I want him but don't want to buy him at full price. On the other hand, he can still be pre-order from Hasbro Pulse UK whereby Shockwave was soldout!

My biggest issue with the G1 figures being made are the various inconsistencies in painting and molding. Some figures have the sliver painted faces and others have the gray painted faces, some have clear plastic for windows or painted blue and some figures have sliver blue painted eyes or baby blue eyes.

i’m 19 now and stopped collecting transformers just after TLK came out - then in late 2022 i started again and now have nearly the entire g1 cast!

Pretty much the same boat. Waiting on 86 Devastator, new Superion, Bruticus, Powerglide, Seaspray, Windcharger, Swerve, Tailgate, Outback and Venom… maybe another crack at Reflector too.
#1 for me, I was never able to have some of these characters as a kid, and now as an adult I can afford to have all of them.
Love the happy memories of getting toys from Woolworths probably why im a big fan of power glide the the little autobot plane 😊 now thinking 🤔 of the uk comic i used get with my pocket money there was a story line that freaked me out called city of fear ran for about five issues dead zombie transformers 😮 about 1988 or 1989

I collect Masterpiece, KOs, and 3rd party, mainline is ok, the only thing about MPs is the price, it is so expensive. So i don't buy often, but when i do, they are so worth it.
They look totally worth it to me. The Seekers are a big draw for me towards the masterpiece - I can just get so many other figures for the price. But no doubt - some of the best Transformers ever made (hard to see how some of them could be topped really)
@@retroandreissue indeed, there are ways to get around paying so much for MPs as in KOs! Collecting Masterpiece is such a joy for me, but mainline is getting better in quality, with Studio Series 86 and such! Whatever line you collect, it is all about just having fun!
That is why i started collecting TFs as they only started looking good since Siege and SS86. I hated the toys besides MP that were too expensive as beer was more important. I collected everything but the figures until 2019, and now I have hundreds and hundreds. I watch all the different shows all the time, I read the comics all the time, and I'm just more addicted than ever. But it's really thanks to toon accuarcy that are also easy to transform, that I came into figures. All the years that if they were vaguley the same colour as in the show, that would do, seem to be gone forever. SS86 is the best toyline ever produced and rightly so as it supports the best film ever made. I do also collect MP and 3p MP now as well, but they just look nice are arent really efer handled. They Yolopark figures are incredible and I am collecting those now as well. They are pretty much perfection and I dont care if they don't transform so I have another way to get perfect robot modes, and for a lot cheaper than MP (that I never transform again after the first go anyway).
I don't do a lot of Transforming myself and generally prefer to keep them in bot mode (it's one of the reasons I make mistakes all the time and forget and miss something in the transformation!) I started collecting transformers when they started to like what I imagined they looked like as a kid.
3:10 That's interesting and I hear it from most people, but I was mostly the opposite. I always assumed the toys were the authentic looks - I did want more articulation - but I wished the cartoon artists could've drawn the characters with as much detail as the toys had (but with articulation).

I quit masterpiece! To expensive and to limited . I started studio series 86 and that's all i buy now figures shouldn't cost more then 20 bucks ! Some of these are getting over priced though i may be quitting this line also if it keeps up but as is i love the line and yes i do get some legacy that fit in with the old school transformers i look for .

I think the most important when it comes to collecting anything including toys is to be selective. Not everyone has the budget to buy everything produced by toy manufacturers.
Lets face the facts, we can never buy every single figure that's being released. Commercialism is a vicious cycle. Toy manufacturers will do anything and everything to make the average comsumer keep buying. So my best advice i always give myself is choose and buy selective. Even for characters you really love, apply the same logic. This will help to keep control on your own budget and space.
Currently now I am happy that I have finally completed my studio series Dinobots and got my Haslab Victory Saber.
Have just placed my pre-order for the Commander Class Optimus Prime and am looking forward to received it, along with the MPG Godmaster Super Ginrai.
I am really hoping that Takara Tomy will release the MPG God Bomber soon for combining Super Ginrai into God Ginrai

You chose the other path that I didn't and not the third path many chose- the legend scale mp.
I chose to try to get the best of the best because I played with mainline and they weren't that fun to me, nor did they scratch the itch. I always knew something was better and that mainline could end up being more expensive in the long run, given that they are new versions made almost yearly.
I chose MP line and I don't regret the line I chose, I only regret maybe I shouldn't have started collecting in the first place. But, I must admit, they do give me a joy that I can't imagine not having in my life. Especially in these times when people choose to be hell-raising stupid-heads.
I have an art channel in my discord server and I will post social media posts about transformers toys. Because just like you said. They are pieces of art.
0:11 I have to say that some bothers me about your transformation of Studio Series 86 Hot Rod, and maybe you like or prefer it that way or the parts are missing but, the way you have him in vehicle mode it isn’t full transformed. There are the little wing pieces that come from underneath the hood and cover the silver parts of Hot Rod's shoulder and completes the headlights aren’t out where they should be. Now if you prefer it that way, I apologize for bringing it and didn’t know and I do not want to cause any problems. It just bugs me as I have seen it before on your channel. It just to me odd no hard feeling form me. Have a good day.

We have to be honest, modern G1 are better than MP figures nowadays. Cheaper, they represent G1 characters in a toy, at adecuated scales, comparing them with other figures Of TF in general.

As someone who grew up with Animated and Prime. I’m sick and tired of 95% of figures being G1ified. Everything is G1 like none of the subsequent series even exist. I really want some of the Animated characters remade cause they are so difficult and expensive to find and buy. Hasbro has truly milked G1 for 40 years now and I think the other subgroups of the fandom, the ones who don’t care about G1, like myself, deserve some recognition…
